    138 KB ZeonQuest April 1st special I apologized on 4chan !!cAsGzl185mF 04/01/11(Fri)12:06 No.14440533
You are Commander David Lister, ace Mobile Suit pilot and recipient of a long list of titles and nicknames. You have been fighting roughly half of the Federation space fleet for about a day or more as they try to gain control of Side 4, a strategic stepping stone to lay siege to Space Fortress Solomon.

Last time in ZQ you thwarted a group of Zeon pilots as they attempted to defect to the Federation. You disabled a Zaku that had been running rearguard so you can later capture it and rushed to Zolomon's aid as he singlehandedly held off nine Rick Dom's at the same time. The 5th Gundam and it's giant chaingun showed up to assist the defecting Doms and you fought it to a stalemate yet again and forced it's retreat. Two of the Rick Doms managed to escape and you are now headed back to the Zaku you disabled to retrieve its pilot for questioning.
Both you and Zolomon are running low on ammo and have taken damage. Your GM shield was also destroyed. Again.

Is there anything you want to do before you get to the disabled Zaku?

I guess. I think the main reason we keep getting people complaining that the quest has lost it's pizazz is because we've pretty much done everything, and all were waiting for now is for it to end. I think I need to spend less time writing combat scenes and just handwave it more.

If that's you I will give you such a paddling. When you did the hex combat with numbers so we could see a somewhat definitive way of who can handle what? That was awesome. Just get definitive about combat capabilities in stand up fights and encourage underhanded shit when it's stacked way out of our favor.

Also? I love the combat porn. Don't stop baby. Don't stop.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)16:45 No.14440842
Honestly, I loved when you did the hex battlemap. Reminded me of when you had the Google maps of the battlefields during the Battle of Odessa.
When doing large fleet actions, with lots of support and targets, I think that works better, and you SHOULD be less descriptive.

It's when we're at the small unit scale, or trying to be sneaky and underhanded, that you should be more descriptive.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)17:13 No.14441031
Well, in case any other players are still here, should we take the 8472nd pilot straight back to our lines, or take a roundabout route that goes past the southern engineering crew, and the rest of our team.

I think we should take the southern route, in case the 2 that got away try to ambush us. Jolyne and Option can take them out if the 8472nd tries to take advantage of our weakened state.

I'm glad apologized didnt actually have zeonquest today.

You return to the Zaku you disabled earlier to find it still jammed into place among the debris you'd left it in. It's clear that the pilot has made some attempt at escape but was unsuccessful. The hatch is jammed only partway open against the debris and not enough that someone would be able to get out. There is a faint distress signal coming from the suit in addition to the beacon you left, but with the debris cover and minovsky particles in the area it is unlikely anyone would have found it if they hadnt known where to look.

You point your weapon at the disabled suit, telling the trapped pilot that you've had enough bullshit for one day and that he'd better become talkative quickly.
The distress signal immediately cuts off and is replaced by a weak radio transmission.
"I give up! I surrender! I didnt even want to do this I swear, it was all the Major's idea."

    "Talk faster."
"We were supposed to fake our defection. We had a Feddie contact to accept our surrender sure but the plan was to set the reactors on our suits for supercritical once we were close enough to their carriers and command ships. The Federation never would have accepted more pleas for surrender from the legitamacy after something like that. Other than that we just followed the plan the Federation spy had given us, blowing up the mine layer to show we were sincere in defecting."

So Gihren Loyalists are at it again.

Bring him back with us. I'm going to go against what I said earlier and suggest we go through the central clearing created by the mine detonations. It will give us an opportunity to assess the tactical landscape on our way back to the OH.
    >> I apologized on 4chan !!cAsGzl185mF 04/01/11(Fri)19:29 No.14442261
After convincing the captured pilot not to do anything stupid (like restarting his reactor and trying to self destruct) you lock his suit hatch closed. You and Zolomon then begin the long flight back to the fleet towing the broken suit. Hopefully some of it will be worth salvaging.

You pass through the debris area cleared by the destruction of the mine layer without incident. The area is still littered with smaller bits that have rebounded off of the heavier surrounding debris but nothing here would offer any cover in a future fight. You arent sure if that's good or bad really. It takes only a few more minutes to pass through the smaller area of heavy debris closer to the ships before you break through. With line of sight again you're able to link into the laser com net.

For the moment things seem little changed through it shouldnt be much longer until the last of the mines are layed. Balls and GM snipers are reported to be taking pot shots near the flanks but havent tried another all out assault.

You're now headed for the Outer Heaven, anything you want to check in on before you arrive?
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)19:54 No.14442511
We should ring up Mauser and Anita, get a sitrep of the defenses.
See if we can get through to Nell, and have her pull her bits back to do recon at the edges of her range; it's possible that the Federation might attempt an end-run around the field while we're pre-occupied with defending the center.

When we get back to the OH, we get David and Zol's suits patched up and re-armed, and we interrogate this pilot. As soon as we identify who the Feddie spy is, we send that info out on the command net, along with the info that the 8472nd are Loyalists who just fucked up and blew a hole in our central defenses.
    >> I apologized on 4chan !!cAsGzl185mF 04/01/11(Fri)20:07 No.14442635
I was mainly stalling for time to get more stuff typed.
You contact Anita on a secure line as you approach and inform her that the 8472nd turned traitor. There are still some suits finishing repairs soon that could cover the central area while the other mine layers finish. She'll also try to round up a security team and send them to the MS bay. She also says Nell will be told to keep an eye out.

Rance's Zaku waves as you approach. "Good to see you commander. Is everyone else alright?"

"We left them guarding the mine layer while Zol and I were investigating something." you tell him.

You keep a close eye on the traitor Zaku as you drag it into the hangar. At your insistance the techs use some of the cranes to lock it in place while they wait for the security detachment. After a few minutes of work the reactors in the suit are made safe and they get to work on the damaged hatch.

    >> I apologized on 4chan !!cAsGzl185mF 04/01/11(Fri)20:11 No.14442664
    "How long for repairs Ookawara?"
"Honestly we're going to be putting patches over your patches soon. You'll be good enough to go in another hour but at the end of the day the Nacht Zaku is going to need a complete overhaul, 12 hours minimum. Zol's damge is rather heavy in places but it should be easy to fix so less than 2 hours. That Zaku II you dragged in is a nearly a write off but not quite. Would you mind telling Rance to give my techs a hand with strapping it to the outer hull in a bit?"

While you've been chatting the mechanics have popped the hatch and the security team is shackling the captured pilot. The Outer Heaven may not have a large brig but it does have one.

Did you want to interrogate the prisoner while your suits are being fixed and refueld?
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)20:16 No.14442698
    Yes, interrogate.
The immediate concern is who the Feddie spy is, and if there are any other Loyalists placed here.

You tell Zolomon to grab his shades and ask if he wants to play 'good cop, bad cop.' He shrugs and says he could go either way right now, it's up to you.
"If he was involved in anything to do with the attack on Von Braun though I'll knock his teeth out."

Good Cop or Bad Cop? Or just say screw it and start asking questions?

Let's get right to it. The only chance to leniency he has right now, is to spill everything. If he doesn't, he gets to stay in the brig with no space suit, as the OH goes into combat against the Federation line.
He cooperates, and he gets a suit. If he impresses us, we send him to one of the colonies and to a prison there, instead of here on the front line.

    >If he impresses us, we send him to one of the colonies and to a prison there, instead of here on the front line.
Um... most of the space colonies the legitmacy still holds are right here in Side 4. Just something to take into account, I get what you're going for though.

When you arrive at the brig one of the soldiers points you to a com pannel with a message waiting for you. It's Mauser.
"David are you sure this is the best time to be dicking around trying to get info out of prisoners? We could be hit by another attack any minute now."

You promise to take care of this quickly, besides your suits are still under repair.
"We've been going for nearly a day straight now. Not everybody aboard or in your team served in Mastodon battalion, just remember that."

    >If he doesn't, he gets to stay in the brig with no space suit, as the OH goes into combat against the Federation line.

This could turn out to be an interesting conversation. You note to yourself that it's too bad the brig isnt on the gravity deck, they could have had a bucket of cold water near the door to imply the might waterboard him. Oh well.

Of course the phone rings when I'm typing. I seriously dont know how apologized types so fast.
The prisoner was quick to retell much of what you'd already heard and without much prodding kept going.
Most of the Rick Dom squad involved had infiltrated Solomon when the fleets were returning from Orbital battle 01 as so many units had been fragmented that it was hard to keep track. Any team that hadnt been split up was just kept together. Apparently the only reason this particular pilot had been brought in on the conspiracy was because he was one of the better spotters available.

The problem was that he hadnt met the actual Federation spy personally. From what he'd figured out on his own though there was atleast 1 in the local garrison and the one the Loyalists had made contact with was at Solomon. Each of the pilots were offered money in a Side 6 bank account with 50,000 payed up front and another 100,000 for each of their mobile suits. Apparently the Feds had fully expected them to hand over the suits. The spy most likely worked in the docks as the loyalists had been careful to stay away from other parts of the station left they draw attention to themselves.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)21:10 No.14443165
That's all he has? No information on any other Loyalist cells?
And just to be clear, there's a Feddie spy amongst the garrison here at Side 4?

Alright fine, we keep him here in the brig, get him a working space suit, and lock the door. If we survive the battle, we'll let some MP's take care of him.

Right now, let's see what we can of the overall tactical picture here, and if Nell has seen anything.

That's all he has? No information on any other Loyalist cells?
You toss him back his pilots's suit after one of the security team finishes marking it with bright orange spray paint.

    >Right now, let's see what we can of the overall tactical picture here, and if Nell has seen anything.
The only thing Nell can seem to make out are what the recon Zakus are seeing though she does seem to be getting a bit more anxious. You ask he if she's feeling alright.

"I feel sort of weird, maybe a little scared. Like there are lots of big pointy spikes on the other side of the debris field. I dont feel like I'm in any immediate danger though."

Mauser is also seeming a little on edge when you speek to him. "They're keeping quiet, too quiet. It's like before the airborne assault at Odessa again. I wish we could do something about it but we dont have enough ships to strike first."
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)21:30 No.14443356
Have Nell move her bits forward, try to see what the Fed fleet is doing. If she can't see anything there, have her bring the bits back and begin scanning from alternative trajectories, ones that would bypass the debris field to attack the colonies. I know it's kind of vague, but I'm banking on Nell's Newtype abilities.
I can't think of anything else that can be done until our suits are fixed.

Running around the ship and interrogating prisoners has taken up more time than you thought. Before you head back to the MS bay Anita lets you know that the minelayers should be finished by now but it will still be a fe more minutes before they get word back.

Ookawara is waiting for you when you get downstairs.
"Commander the worst of the damage is fixed but I wanted to talk to you about your weapon load out. First thing is that I'd like is more time to look over your GM beam rifle to see how it's holding up, it isnt anything necessary but be aware we dont know what kind of wear and tear to expect. Second, Anita mentioned you keep running into that Gundam with the big gatling gun. I told my mechanics they could sleep when they were dead and fixed you up something special. It's an oversized ammo magazine for your quad barrel MG that fits on the lower back of your MS. The loading mechanism isnt tested though so it might jam up if you throw out too much heavy fire. Also be aware that the barrles of the gun werent intended to cycle that much ammo through them so watch for overheat. I'll have to toss the gun barrels after one sortie with this setup. Lastly this is going to use up a lot of our ammo stockpiles, we've only got enough ammo for two loads.

1x Monster ammo magazine (Restriction: NACHT ZAKU)

"I figure I migh as well tell you that Zolomon is on his last beam lance. I attached a cable and winch to that new binder arm of his but it's only a quick fix, that cable will snap easily. I might be able to fit that spare heatrod we took off your suit to it later."

It looks like the Feddie fleet is going to try to go around the debris field, or at least, make us think that.

Do we still have our beam carbine, or did we hand that off to Option? I can't remember.

Anyway, make sure that we pick up another of the GM shields that we salvaged, and equip that quad MG.
Ask Mauser if there's been any word of gundam spottings, otherwise, I think it's time we went gundam-hunting.

    >Also, hey, this is an April Fool's session, right, and not a real ZQ one? The real one will take place tomorrow?

Beam Carbine was given to Option.

You and Zolomon join Rance outside who has been waiting to get back into the fight.
"Nice gun sir, any chance I could borrow that some time?"
"If I can manage to not break it the first time out we'll see. Are you packing a spare chainmine? They seem to come in handy."
"Uh... yes! I dont know how well I'll be able to use it though."

There have been no Gundam sightings since your encounter but there is little in the way of recon data on the center area now even with some suits moving into the closest debris. Anita reports the engineering teams coming back from the debris field as you begin to move out. The rest of the team was becoming slightly concerned that you hadnt come back.

"Hang on sir we have another message coming in from Solomon. High priority... It's Admiral Dozle sir he wants to talk to you immediately."

"I've had worse receptions sir, though the only one I can think of is Jaburo."
You shake your head at Dozle's booming laughter knowing he cant see you.

"David we have bad situation. I've been keep a close eye on the reports from your sector. You've been giving them hell but it's not enough. We've spotted the rest of the Federation fleet coming in from Texas Colony. Thankfully my sister and I have been trying to maintain a united front, she relayed the intelligence right away rather than making me work for it."
There was an akward pause as though the Admiral was considering something.
"The other half of the Federation fleet is going make a run straight for Solomon it looks like. I need every ship and suit deployed in Side 4 back here immediatly. There should be just enough time to organise a premtive strike and take the second Federation fleet from behind just as they begin their attack. They wont stand a chance.
Here's the catch: I need someone to stay behind and delay the feddies in Side 4 as long as possible. Even if you could only give the rest of the fleet an hour it might be enough. Keep whatever you feel is absolutely necessary but the more force that can be brought back to Solomon the better. I wouldnt ask this of just anyone David."

    Overwhelming enemy numbers.
    Insufficient ammunition or repairs.
    Near-zero chance of success.

    What are we waiting for?

We're going to fuck up the Fedeeration fleet, and die trying. Have Nell go along with Blue Battalion and the OH to aid Solomon; they'll have a better chance there than here.
As for the rest of Nachtmaren, we're going to go gundam hunting. Also, I think David and Zol should drag a pair of missiles each from the defense sats to the edge of the debris field.
They'll then activate the missiles, and ride them in to the center of the assault carrier formation, and fuck up the Federation's shit.
Bonus points if we can bring along a Zaku's fusion reaction set to critical overload.

Nell's support personal are aboard the Outer Heaven and she has no real experience with the other teams or crews present at Side 4.

    >Bonus points if we can bring along a Zaku's fusion reaction set to critical overload.
You know, you just happen to have a spare Zaku without a pilot, but that'd be on the wrong side of the antarctic treaty's grey area.

What ships and Mobile suits would you like to remain behind in addition to the Nachtmaren and the defense sats?

    5 or more Musai
    ~20 heavy MS
    ~28 medium MS
2 Death Wasps (may be of better use on the attack)
3 Reon Zaku (Were those indivdual recon zakus or units of them on the map before?)
    >> Anonymous 04/01/11(Fri)23:05 No.14444337
    >Nell's support personal are aboard the Outer Heaven and she has no real experience with the other teams or crews present at Side 4
Which is why she would go along with the Outer Heaven and Blue Battalion to aid in Dozle's Attack.

As for other forces staying behind:
2 Musai's, 9 heavy MS, 12 medium MS, the Bigro team, and 2 Recon Zaku's.
All others to go to Solomon and ass-rape the Feddie fleet there making the end-run by attacking from it's exposed flank.

And I'm not budging on that plan for David and Zol to ride missiles into the Federation fleet.
Strap on any boosters or anything else we can, to increase the speed of the missiles and us, and improve evasive manueverability. I only care about us being hard to hit, not necessarily if we can control it until the boosters burn out.

I agree with >>14444337 and it should be volunteers mostly.
I bet the Bigros will be happy finally getting in on the action though.

Mauser is not happy to say the least.
"David are you sure this is a good idea? Musais cant even fire backwards!"
"Admiral Dozle gave me the choice of what ships and suits stay behind. Pull back all of the other suits and ships and set course for Solomon once they're aboard."

The Death Wasps and Bigros use their high speed to help relay orders to the other teams still in the dibris field and before long units are pulling back.
The MS that are remaining here consist of 4 Rick Doms, 2 Rick Dom II's, 2 Gyans, and 1 Gyan Kreiger. The remainder are made up of Zaku F2's, Zaku Kai's and 1 Zudah.
Not counting the MA's and Recon suits of course.

You recieve a text only message as the outer Heaven begins to turn away.
If you get yourself killed out here I will find you after the war and piss on your ashes. -Mauser

Before you can think of a witty response the debris field lights up with explosions.

Get those Recon Zaku's to see what the hell is going on. We'll distribute our forces as soon as we see what the Federation is doing.

Whelp, let's rock and roll gentlemen.
My suggestion is having the recon zakus stay near the edges and keep an eye on any outflanking that may happen, and launch flares if they catch wind of anything or are attacked.
Other than that, I'm not quite sure.

"Sir the Federation fleet has opened fire on the debris field. Massed salvo fire from their warships, it doesnt look like their Mobile suits are doing anything. Both beam weapons and heavy missile fire. There may be support ships moving up, it's hard to tell."

As you watch explosions ripple through the debris zone especially the areas the minelayers had spent the most time on.
"Can anyone see how they're doing that? It looks like they're detonating all of our mines."

"I think I get it." says Jolyne. "They're using beam weapons to clear enough of a path through for their missiles. Maybe they loaded them full of flack to take down the mines?"

"Well that's perfect, how do we stop them now?"
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)00:18 No.14445049
Hrmmmm. Did the Feds pull back the forces that were making their way around? I'm assuming that they would if they're trying to clear the debris field.
I was going to suggest that we try to dive bomb them while they're focused on the field, but charging into range of their guns without cover is probably a bad idea, and trying to get through the debris field with them blowing it up is not a good idea either.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)00:19 No.14445058
we can't feasibly wait for the enemy to come to us; they'll simply use their massed beam weapons to burn a hole through the debris field and then stand off as they pick apart the defense sats.

I've got a crazy idea: we get Nachtmaren to move those a few missiles through the debris field. Once we get to the other side, we light them off and ride them into the enemy assault carrier formation. We get in close so that they can't use their beam weapons without hitting their own ships.
The missiles and our suits will have whatever boosters we can slap together to get past the Fed picket screen as fast as possible.
Once in close, we starting wrecking the Federation's shit.

While they're preoccupied with this, the Bigro team will have been using a roundabout trajectory to come in hard, light up some capital ships, and then we catch a ride on them as we zoom out.

It's either this mad plan, or we try to guerilla fight the enemy in the debris field when they try to traverse it.

Since this isn't the 'Official' one, I vote for the mad plan. Plus it's freaking badass.

No, they're both just firing from either side so they're creating a crossfire.

Okay so you want to fly through the debris field that's being shot up.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)00:38 No.14445148
    >Okay so you want to fly through the debris field that's being shot up.
Well obviously not in their line of fire!
I should have been more detailed.
Assuming that the Feddies are using their crossfire towards the center of the debris field, we skim along near the bottom. There's less material to bump into, but still enough to hide us.
They must be concentrating their fire along a plane; we only need to travel above or below it.

    >Well obviously not in their line of fire!
    >I should have been more detailed.
I should also have been more detailed to be fair.
Do you want all of the MS headed towards the Fed fleet on missiles or would you like some hitching rides on the Bigros? What's going to stay back with the ships?
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)00:45 No.14445197
So the Balls and Salamis are still on the edges?
We could send the regular MS suits to cause a distraction on the "south" end of the map, while the Heavy goes for the "north" and wreck shit up there.
With them suitably distracted, we ride the rockets into the center, and have the Bigros either come with us or blitz the "north" after a delay. Also, the Musai should stay together, probably to the "south".

Above all, we need to take out at least one Gundam
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)00:51 No.14445252
Agree with this deployment plan. The heavy and medium MS teams are to do hit and run attacks from within the non-targeted areas of the debris field. Such action will make it appear that we are attempting to attrite the enemy by using the cover of the debris field. The enemy may fall for it.
Because really, who would expect the enemy to ride missiles straight into the heart of your assault carrier formation?
    >> I apologized on 4chan !!cAsGzl185mF 04/02/11(Sat)01:25 No.14445527
Most of the team are understandably nervous, except for Zolomon who is more worried about the missile warhead.
"Commander have you ever done something like this before?" Asks Option.
"Sort of." you reply. "I'm a little fuzzy on the details but I'm sure we've done something like this before."

"We've got a possible hole in their firing pattern coming up." Reported one of the recon pilots,"Standby to launch."

"This is Lister to all forces begin attacks on the flanks. Bygro team, go."

The missiles lit off propelling the team forward. Each of the MS straddling their respective rocket used their thrusters to add to the speed and help change course.

"Engaging left flank. Enemy GM snipers confirmed, our team's Gyan is countering with beam chaff."
    "Right flank looking t-e sa--"
You're now into the debris belt and communications are cut off. The weapons fire hasnt reached the small clearing created by the minelayer explosion yet and the team makes good time. A wave of explosions go off among the debris ahead and slightly below your approach. The next salvo of beam weaponry is roughly level with your team's approach.
"This is going to be close."
"I sure hope that spy wasnt one of our recon pilots." comments Zol.

The follow up missile volley detonates dangerously close but still far enough ahead that the rockets everyone is riding arent damaged.
"You know, if this area had been mined we would probably be dead right now." says Elaine.
The next barrage of enemy fire is relative 'above' your team meaning the follow up missiles will be almost harmless. Almost. There's still a chance some of the flack or the smaller bits of debris ahead will punch through your gian ammo magazine. God what are you going to do about AA fire around Federation Carriers? Well shit, nothing to be done about that now.

Nachtmares weaves through the much thinner more open area left by the constant fire. Thankfully some of the mess is drifting back towards the Feddies and is giving you some cover.

"Guncannons!" Shouts Jolyne just before 240mm shells start to whizz past. Zol and Elaine let go of their missiles, which continue to accelerate out ahead no longer burdened by the extra tonnage. Both explode when some of the heavy shells tear through their thin casings. Elaine's missile turns out to have been packed with beam chaff, which is porbably a good thing. Everyone else soon abandons their launch vehicles as fire from ahead begins to focus in on the assault.

Okay guys, I've been playing Men of Destiny on a loop since forever now in an attempt to keep writing but it's just too late, I've gotta stop.

Well, it almost worked. If we had more missiles, or maybe if we used the missiles as a distraction and actually rode in on the Bygros, we might be able to get past the initial picket screen.

Oh, I also sent the Rick Dom II's in with Nachtmaren since their longer range and high performance would be of better use there.

If this thread is still here in the morning I'll see if I can add some more.

"Dont stop, just shoot them as you pass!" You order as the other missiles explode from machinegun fire.

Jolyne's railgun knocks the head off one Guncannon with a pair of shots punching through the heavy cockpit armor of a second. You use your GM shield to soak off the worst of the MG fire while dodging the heavier artillery then return fire. You pour a steady stream of bullets into your own target as you close the distance, the rounds blasting apart some of the suit's Gundarium armor until it exploded.
Elaine and Option score hits of their own with their beam weapons once they're close enough for the beam chaff not to get in the way. You know Zolomon hit something that exploded but you're not sure what.
Rance and the two Rick Dom's put down covering fire with their 90mm MG's and grenade launchers as GM cannon's become visable.
Zol hurls his beam lance then dodges killing one suit then another using his shield RPG's. Most of the others rack up kills as the other cannon GM's pop.
"These GM cannons are great!" shouts Zol. "They've got less armor and manuver almost as bad as a Guncannon."

"They've still got shields to block MG fire." Comments Elaine after she finishes slicing through one of the suits with her beam naginata, using the GM's own shield as cover.
