    418 KB Gargoyle Quest 12 VKO !qw2cdBTZAc 03/30/11(Wed)21:31 No.14422773
    Last Time on Gargoyle Quest:

    >>"You were right, someone was here, Around midnight. Strange claw marks in the soft earth, look like a child from the gait, but the foot's posture is wrong, and the way it's pressed into the ground."

    >>He looks around, obviously on the lookout. He does not notice you or Hugh.

    >>"Two sets. And a man wearing shoes. Average height. Tire tracks going here and away. No, Max, they're not bear tracks. The foot's angular, claw looks like it's projecting out of the toe, it's strange... Yeah, I'll be here, come as soon as you can."

    >>You and Hugh move quietly as is possible over to the pond. You step in a few dry leaves, and you can see the man turn in your direction, putting his hand on his gun as you and Hugh duck on the bank of the pond.

    >>"Who's there?" He calls out.

    >>You reduce the volume on your screeching, just to be safe. Apparently, you can make the noise with your mouth closed at a much closer range. Good to know.

    >>You and Hugh slip down into the water silently, and you soon realize that your vision is very strange down here. Everything seems to be moving as though they were flags waving in the wind. You wait for a long time before surfacing. You can see the man and another dressed similarly investigating where you and Hugh slipped into the pond.

    >>"I just don't understand it. No one can hold their breath for that long, especially not a child." The new man says.

    >>You descend back down. You can see them from just the edge of the water as you walk a bit closer on the bottom of the pond. The man's face is furrowed with concern, but eventually he and the other man drive off.

    >>You and Hugh surface. Hugh spits out a bit of plant material. "Ugh, I'm glad we can't taste anything." He says. "Those guys sure were tenacious, I wonder what's up?"

    >>"I don't know...Let's go sleep and wait back in the cave for the Father to return." You say, brushing some of the weeds off of your body.

    >>You creep back into the cave, where you can hear soft squeaking from the bats who are now getting to sleep. You feel somewhat tired yourself. But you remain awake, to wait for the father. It's not like he can move you while you're sleeping.

    >>He doesn't come.

    >>"It's really early." Hugh says with a yawn. "Sun's getting up there."

    >>"You don't think..." He stops himself, tensing.

    >>"Hello?"

    >>A quiet voice rouses you from slumber that you know has not lasted long. It sounds like the voice of a young girl, coming from the other cave entrance.

    >>Hugh is roused as well, but is silent.

    >>"Hello? Anyone there?"

    >>You can see a young girl, about three feet in height with long, wavering hair dressed in a skirt and sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt. She is a child, probably no more than seven. She's rubbing her knee where she fell, and walking awkwardly further into the cave.

    >>"Are you lost, miss?" You call down the cave.

    >>She perks up instantly. "Yes! I need help! There are bad men after me!"

    >>You whisper to Hugh to guard the child, skirting out past the young girl, who is now deep in the cave.

    >>You are outside. You hear rustling in the brush.

    >>You see a man stalking on a path towards the cave, a strange knife that curves like a river in his hand. He is wearing a mask with long tendrils attached to the front, and he moves oddly, like a puppet with no visible strings. His breathing is hard and erratic.

    >>You get into the brush. You see him walk down the path, clutching the knife in his grasp with the point down. You smell fresh blood from the blade. He is softly chanting something.

    >>"Dread Cthulhu sleeps in R'leyh, beyond time and space, soon he will awaken, soon, soon. I'a I'a Cthulhu f'tagn..."

Sorry, chrome is being a huge bitch.

    >>You wait in the brush, seeing the man advance towards the cave. You shriek terribly, the man clutching his ears as you pounce on him, slamming his head into the soft earth. He loses consciousness.

    >>You slip back into the cavern, having to run along the wall a bit till you reach Hugh.

    >>"Who are you?" The girl asks, curled up with her arms over her knees. You realize that the cave is a bit chilly. "Hello?"

    >>"A blind guardian, child...and who are you?"

    >>"Cindy. Cindy Markov. My daddy's a watchmaker." She says, shivering a bit.

    >>"Are you doing alright, Cindy?" You say over to her.

    >>"I'm kinda scared, but daddy told me that as long as I was brave, I would be alright." She says.

    >>"That's right. You're a brave girl, Cindy."

    >>Cindy grins. "Yeah. My daddy said when you're scared, that's when being brave is most important."

    >>You look over at Hugh. "Alright then, Cindy. The man who was chasing you is gone. But I need you to be brave. Hugh and I are going to walk over to the cave entrance so you can see us."

You try to look as unintimidating as possible, wings tight across your back, and your eyes hopefully in a position that isn't strange. Hugh already has kind of a dopy expression, so he's not too much of a factor anyway.

You walk past the girl, who tenses up from either anticipation or excitement. You and Hugh walk out into the light, where he puts a hand on your wrist to indicate to you that's where you are.

"What are you?" Cindy says, her childish attitude one of fascination instead of terror.

"Guardians of the night..." You say, dramatically.

Cindy giggles, running over to you. "You have funny ears." She says, reaching up and tugging on them.

"They, uhh," Hugh tries to voice an objection. "They are kind of funny looking."

Give them a feel, then laugh, looking between Cindy and Hugh.

"Yes, I suppose they are funny..." Try our best to smile; think just like all the Hollywood stars do it. :D

"Cindy; does your father know you're missing? I'm sure he's very worried about you..."

Whatever her answer, unless he's nearby, let's recommend that she stay here till Father comes by with the car tonight.

"Yes, I suppose they are funny..." You say, laughing. Hugh laughs along with you, as does Cindy. She doesn't seem afraid at all.

"Cindy; does your father know you're missing? I'm sure he's very worried about you..." You ask her.

"Probably. The men said they were sending a letter to him for money, so I think he knows." She says.

"A ransom letter!" Hugh says, putting his hand down into his palm. "I think that's it. Did they say it was a ransom letter?"

"Yeah, I think so. I managed to get away because they didn't tie me up tight." Cindy says.

"Hmm, sounds like a couple a' amateurs to me, Gabriel." Hugh says in his hard-boiled detective voice.

"Cindy, you should stay in this cave until our friend comes by tonight." You say.

    You hear a far-off voice. The father's?

"...was just off for a drive..."

And then another, more authoritative voice.

"Kidnapping's a serious crime padre. Don't think your robes can hide the sinister secret most of the priesthood has been concealing."

    "What? You son of a-"

You hear the sound of raised voices from that direction, but nothing else useful or intelligible.

Cindy ducks back into the cave, along with Hugh.

"What's up, Gabriel?" He asks, seeing you look off into the distance away from the cave.

"...people are outside. Hugh, stay here with Cindy; I'll go check it out." You say, taking to the trees silently.

You see a man wearing an angular cap with a bang-stick at one hip and a small club in his hand. The Father is up against a car with some sort of small angled box atop it, and his hands are bound behind his back by some sort of chained bands. One of the men from earlier is there.

"I would never take a child! You have my word!" O'Malley says.

"Sure, like I haven't heard that one before." The man with the angled cap says, chewing something loud enough that you can hear each smack of it against his teeth.

    Smack, smack, smack

The three of them are by three cars, near a small wooden building that has a sloped roof and appears to be made from logs.

The police? Well, time to go retrieve Cindy...

When we get back to the cave, talk to Hugh and Cindy.

"I found Father, but he's currently held up by the coppers; they think he stole Cindy."

"Cindy, I want you to go to the police; they'll take you back to your father. Hugh and I will be watching, but you can't tell anyone you saw us, ok?"

You fly back to the cave, landing quietly out front. The robed man is still unconscious.

"I found Father, but he's currently held up by the coppers; they think he stole Cindy."

"Cindy, I want you to go to the police; they'll take you back to your father. Hugh and I will be watching, but you can't tell anyone you saw us, ok?"

    "Why not?" Cindy asks.

    "Uh." Hugh stammers.

To lie or not to lie...

"Well...it's hard to explain. Hugh and I are...we're secret agents. And the police out there? They're working with us. But we weren't supposed to found; it's very secret." Look over to Hugh for support. "If they found out we showed ourselves, we'd be in trouble. But we couldn't just leave you here in this cave..." Hold her hand gently. "So, please, you can't tell anyone that you saw us."

"Secret agents?" Cindy asks, looking like she doesn't believe you. "What are you doing here?"

"That's classified, young lady." Hugh says quickly, standing up straight from his normally stooped posture. "I'm afraid we wouldn't be very good secret agents if we told you that."

"OK, I won't say anything, it's a secret." She says, smiling.

"Don't worry, we'll stay nearby and make sure you get there alright." Hugh says, patting her gently on the shoulder.

Cindy nods, looking over at the two of you. "Thank you. Will I get to see you again?"

"I'm sure we'll meet again..." You say, unsure if what you say is true.

"Okay! Goodbye Gabriel, Hugh!" She waves to you.

The two of you follow her through the treetops, and she glances back every once in a while.

She comes out of the forest, running up to the cop. They deliberate a bit, and to your surprise, the father is not uncuffed.

"Why are you still holding me?" The Father asks.

"Because we don't have the 'real' culprits yet, if they aren't actually you." The policeman says.

"In this park, I heard you say. I was a tracker in the army. I can help you out." The Father says.

"No can do. You're still a suspect." The cop says.

"But father O'Malley wouldn't take me, he's nice!" Cindy insists.

"Yes, I'm sure little girl, but he could be playing a trick on you." The Cop says. "He could be a bad man in disguise."

    "You're dumb." Cindy says, plainly.

"Wha- Look, you just sit there with Mr. Ranger. I'm going in." The cop says, cocking his bang stick as he walks off into the woods.
