Hey /tg/, a friend and I were told by two acquaintances we recently met to consider getting into D&D. They figured they'd show us what a game of it is like, so they arranged for a one-on-one game between themselves as a demonstration.

The one who was a player brought out a high-level character they said they'd been playing him for a while. She was a badass, magical gunslinger who did all sorts of crazy gunplay enhanced by magic. We mostly got exploration and combat shown to us, but halfway into the time slot we'd set aside for the demo, it got cut short when the player's character got her head bitten off by a very hungry purple worm. We didn't expect that. The DM ended it there.

I don't know, should my friend and I really try to get into D&D if it's like that?
    >> Anonymous 03/20/11(Sun)23:11 No.14310696
Death is a very real possibility if you fuck up badly enough.

But that doesn't mean that it happens in every session. Unless your DM is out for the party's blood. In which case, your DM is an ass and you need to kick him out.

And if your character DOES bite the dust, there are ways of bringing them back to life. It can be expensive, and difficult if you're a lower level, but not impossible. Or you can make a new character. Death doesn't mean "GAME OVER BAD END", just the story taking an unexpected twist. Part of roleplaying in games like this is figuring out how to roll with those twists and turns.

Don't do it. You're not obligated to play D&D simply because the player showed you what it was like--especially because the player showed you what it was like. You can choose to not play, and no one can fault you for it. I'd never forgive anyone who blamed you for not playing.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/11(Sun)23:35 No.14310952
The DM explained that if the body can't be retrieved (and it couldn't because the purple worm ate it completely or something), then the character can't be resurrected. What then?
It looked like it happened just because of lucky (or unlucky depending on how I look at it) rolls. Is it supposed to be this unpredictable?
    >> Anonymous 03/20/11(Sun)23:41 No.14311010
It can be, but that's just how the game is.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/11(Sun)23:42 No.14311031
hahah. See, that's part of what the game's about.
If you don't enjoy it, by all means stay the hell away; there's more sex-inducing things you can do with your life. But I'd say at the least it certainly beats "let's get drunk/stoned" as a passtime (cheaper too over time).

Doing "epic things" needs time and growth. People are quick to demonstrate their special, "I swear I rolled her entirely legit" characters or "DMPCs" (just... the day you understand what that last one was is the day you hate the guy running it for doing so. Try not to worry till then, you may never encounter it), but that's mostly just masturbation.

Real roleplaying, whatever the system, is going to usually have a clump of much less "super spechul" characters that eventually grow INTO badasses. But there's no fun without risk, and so death is certainly a possibility. Sucks to be you when it happens, but without dangers your character would either be a stat-fap, or just a sheet you can't really get attached to. The stories of freaky, harsh, or unexpected (or very, very expected: stupidity is the second leading cause of character death, the first being being born/created/written-up) deaths become memories for years to come for you and your group.

Why would you be worried? Unless you think the whole hobby is weird, in which case, why are you here? Although, as far as sword-wielders who have healing powers goes in D&D...that might mean a paladin, and a lot of GMs seem to love making them fall, which just sucks to have happen to you. Uh, which edition of D&D are you guys considering?

In all seriousness, though, roleplaying is pretty fun. If you're not into D&D, you could join my group online. We've got this game going with magical girls and stuff. it's pretty cool, although the subject matter might be off-putting to some. ...of course, we all know /tg/ wants to be the little girl with magical powers.
    >> Anonymous 03/21/11(Mon)01:07 No.14311965
Hmm, sounds like you might want to consider ranged. Since the other went with guns, why don't you consider archery?
    >> Anonymous 03/21/11(Mon)01:17 No.14312073
Eh? That sounds pretty melodramatic for something that should just be a hobby. But I guess I'll take your word for it.

Magical girls? That involves saving the world from monsters, having cool transformation sequences, and pulling off flashy magical attacks, right? I'd be interested in joining, but I'm still very hesitant to get into D&D...

I did some crappy art of an archer (based on myself...) in a notebook in class once. Maybe I can use it as a character portrait if I do end up playing D&D.

    >Magical girls? That involves saving the world from monsters, having cool transformation sequences, and pulling off flashy magical attacks, right? I'd be interested in joining, but I'm still very hesitant to get into D&D...

Yep. Although, really, beyond the transformation sequences, it's not all THAT different from how D&D itself tends to work. We'd probably be using a system that's a bit more involved on making characters, because you have to work a lot of stuff out, and there's no classes and levels. But, it'd still be D20.

And if you're really put off just because of one bad session where a few bad die rolls ended in a character's messy death, well...I'd suggest speaking to the friends who introduced you to the hobby and express your concerns. If the guy running the game doesn't usually do that, aside from calling the dice where they fall? I'd say give it a shot. If you are really worried about what might happen to your character, even after talking with your prospective GM and fellow players, you might want to sit things out for a while or just decide not to play. That's better than playing, but not enjoying yourself for any reason.

OP, does your DM happen to have a strange appearance, by any chance? Albino, white skin, red eyes, with some wear ear mutation? I think I know a guy.

Kyuubee is a friendly little "hobgoblin" who appears before changelings, lets them make a wish to "restore their happiness" that was lost to their Durance, and bestows upon them powerful fae magic. All he asks is that they fight the Gentry, their loyalists, and their privateers.

But these changelings he binds into Pledges gradually lose Clarity, and as they spiral downwards into madness, are asked to venture directly into Arcadia to strike at the true fae. And you know what happens to a changeling who reaches Clarity 0 in Arcadia...

Can someone explain what's going on in this thread?
    >> Anonymous 03/21/11(Mon)10:17 No.14315892
The opening post was essentially the opening story for the Madoka anime series (Puella Magi Madoka Magica).

Right at the start of the series, these two girls (friends) end up meeting with another girl who is already a Magi. They also meet "Kyubey" who offers them a chance at the same. If they accept his contract, they get a wish and become Magi who must fight against "Witches".

The girl they meet dies shortly after when she gets her head ripped off.

Many of the posts in this thread don't know what the reference is (which is funny) and many do (which is also funny).

That being said, the series is centered around genre deconstruction and is quite good.

    OP's friend here.

I've been reading through some of these D&D books while watching over a friend recovering at a hospital.

    >Any tips for how to go about playing this first paladin of mine?

You should think about becoming a good Lich.
Lots of people don't even know good Liches exist - but they do.
Some people need more time and power that's in the hands of an ordinary mortal in order to protect their loved ones.
It's a very noble idea, compatible with the concept you just described, and you'll sort of become a tragic hero doing that.

But be very careful - the quests involved with the Lich transformation involve a lot of evil, and you can actually lose a
grasp of the good and righteous concept on the way. If you do, you'll get gradually more and more distant from the
ideals you held so dear and end up becoming the exact thing you fighted all the time.

Pic related, it's a paladin / lich gone horribly wrong.

Sorry. You need to register with the DM in order to play. He then decides on your equipment and color scheme (don't worry, he's really good at this).
You can't just come in and play, no strings attached.

Anyway, I'm sure our paladin in training can pull it off and avoid a horrible fate with a bit of effort.

I just called the DM and asked him what his game would be like. He said it the game would be a very urban game, centered in a small, yet very magically and technologically advanced (for the setting) city. The aesthetic would be glass and crystals everywhere.

    Sounds neat.

I've heard some horror stories too, but they're just that, horror stories. Paladins should be no worse off as far as DM dickery goes compared to other classes. I'm sure everything will work out as long as I can pull through session lucky number seven without a hitch.

This DM of ours doesn't seem so bad. He just got lucky with a crit from that purple worm, that's all. He didn't mean to get that character killed.

I think that part of it is based on how some people play paladins; if you play the character TOO strict and rigid, you can end up with some self-destructive behavior, depending on the circumstances. A paladin who can learn to adapt and mesh their code of honor with changing circumstances will be more successful than one that breaks under pressure.

I read that the director or screenwriter wasn't pleased with episode 11, animation-wise, so the extra week was like a breath of relief. The episodes were being finished the day of the airing beorehand.

The aftermath of walpurgisnacht has repeatedly been showed to be a ruined, flooded city.

You get one guess why the broadcasters don't want to show the series ending right now.

Does delaying them all by a month count?

Watch it. Nobody in this thread has mentioned the major spoilers (well, there is a couple of posts that reference major spoilers of episodes 6 and 8, but I don't think you catch what they are talking about)

Like blackheart says, cute magical girls with pink hair and bows and frilly dresses doing cute things. A fluffy little cat familiar thing shows up and offers them magical powers and a single Wish if they form a contract with him to save the world from evil spirits that cause suicides called "witches". When a girl defeats a witch, it leaves behind something called a "grief seed" which is used to recharge the magical powers in the girl's "soul gem".

    Spoilers don't work on /tg/.

The little cat thing is actually separating the girl's soul from her body when it makes the contract and the grief seeds they collect are keeping the soulless body alive- The girls are Liches with the soul gem their phylactery. If they don't regularly recharge their soul gem, or become depressed or insane, it turns cloudy and they change into witches. In other words a girl can only survive by hunting the girls who came before them and Kyubei is counting on them eventually failing because he wants the energy that comes from the witch transformations. It’s not over yet but most of the cast is dead or severely traumatized.
