    143 KB The Chronicler 03/08/11(Tue)20:21 No.14176148
You've been running for hours, too scared to think of anything but escape.

You collapse to your knees, fresh air searing your lungs, unable to hear anything other than your own heartbeat.

After a moment, the cool night wind and your stillness calm you enough to take stock of yourself and your surroundings. Looking around you see forest. Or what you assume to be forest, having never been in one before. You also notice there seems to be no sign of pursuit.

Realizing the relative peace may not last, you take a deep breath to steady yourself. Finding your center takes a minute, but you are too well trained to fall back into panic now. Familiar litanies come to your mind, and you remember the swearing you took when you were raised to a proper apprentice of the guild.

You can still hear the questions Tybalt had asked in that bleak room, rife with ceremony and expectation.

    "What is your name?"

    >For future note, all GM speak will be done in greentext. For decision notes, like this one, I will take the highest of three rolls. d20 is the die of the quest, unless noted otherwise. So, name and gender please. everything else will come with time.

    "Indeed."

The man with the cowl on Tybalt's left leaned forward a bit and his voice, despite the somewhat wheezing quality carried through the room quite easily.

"Ms Moores, you came to us as a child, too small to even remember the tragedy that brought you to our gates."

A third person, whom you've just noticed as the room's only female other than yourself interjected. "In any case, having reached an age of 15 summers, we have recognized that you indeed have a certain... spark that we look for when recruting for this humble academy."

"As such, you are to be granted a real apprenticeship, but first you must take the reins of your own destiny and choose the course of study you wish to follow." Tybalt concluded. "Do you wish to study the ways martial with me, tread a more arcane path with Mistress Aria for a guide, or learn a more... subtle way, from Master Argus?"

With this the old man let out a short bark of a laugh "Call a spade a spade Tybalt. The lass deserves to at least know it in plainer terms." His gaze focused on you, intently. "The choice is yours girl, A warrior, a Mage, or an Assassin."

    >Highest of the first three wins the choice. For the record, Assassins are more akin to the ones from Assassin's Creed than JUST stealthy types. This includes a code of honor, in theory. Your choice of path also determines a specialty. Warriors can be sneaky, Mages can use swords, Assassins can learn spells, etc. One particular aspect of that will be greatly enhanced in future endeavors.

As you spoke your decision to walk the path of the mages path a slow smile crept across Aria's face.

"Very well then, your real training will begin next week."

It was then that you noticed the other two masters had left the room.

"First though, you must swear to uphold the three teneants of magic, as transcribed by the original covenent of Arch-Magi: To illuminate others as to magics impartial, not malevonent nature."

    You nodded once.

"To never forsake a greater need in favor of your study, or allow yourself to hide knowledge from your fellow magisters."

    You nodded a second time.

"And to never practice the dark arts of Mind-bending, demonology, or necromancy."

You spoke for the first time "This do I swear."

Aria smiled and embraced you "Then allow me to formally welcome you to Blackwell Academy."

That evening in the quiet hall of masters was 4 years ago. It seems a lifetime. You feel steady enough to continue, but you could also benefit from further meditation.

    >You can choose to continue with the flashbacks, creating a more detailed background now (allowing you to gain some more skills and items. customize further, etc) or keep moving, with the blanks to be filled later.

    >Well, it seems the dice don't matter in this case. Everyone wants to keep meditating.

Slipping deeper into your reverie, you begin to think over the lessons you learned. Much of your early work as an apprentice seemed like pointless busywork at first, but looking back you can see more clearly how you were being prepared to walk the mages path.

Warriors are hammered and sculpted, like blades in a blacksmith's forge, until it becomes a tempered and balanced work of art. Assassins were trained to be ever changing and adaptive, constantly tested until the pressure either broke them or turned them into diamonds. Before you saw some of the training regimines, you wondered how either could compare to the secrets of the arcane; now you wonder if you could measure up to them. Pointless speculation on what could have been is forced quickly from your mind, remembering the careful cultivating it took to prepare you to start mastering the very essence of the world. Unlike Assassins and Warriors, Mages aren't shaped, they blossom their talents from a seed of knowledge and power that is core to their very being. The first step is preparing the soil.

Your first two years you learned almost nothing about actual magic, just principals and theory. Your class was small enough that you were quickly acquainted with everyone, but only made friends with one: Laura, a girl of your age who was a kept orphan. You remember one of the last days before the concluding of your basic training, when Mistress Aria had said that a more balanced education was needed, and encouraged you to speak with one of the other Masters about their craft.

Laura had turned to you, excitement gleaming in her blue eyes "Cross training with the other masters? At last we can get out of this stuffy class room and away from these books. I was thinking about going to Master Argus, but even a few days sparring under Master Tybalt would be a welcome break. What do you think Cass?"

    >Which way do you want to proceed, to Tybalt's barracks Or Argus' study? Highest of the first three like before.

"I was hoping you might say that. I wanted to, but I was afraid to go alone."

She led you past the Barracks, through the dining hall, and past various offices and bunks. Then you came to the tower. Rumor had it that Argus knew all the secret passages in the small walled school, and could take the keep from a small army by himself.

You remembered the small knife tattoo on his left palm you saw at dinner one eve. When you asked Aria about it, she said that only the truly masterful Assassins could gain such a mark, and that there may be only a few dozen in the whole world worthy of one.

You looked at the bracelet you wore, in the shape of a snake eating its own tail. It's a fairly common sign among people who practice magic symbolizing how the power of magic is eternal and that mages watch over and control such power. The people who bear them know it's double meaning: that too much zeal in learning and practicing the art can be self destructive.

As you approached the door you passed a mirror, and looked upon the refection of you and your friend. You can still see yourself there in your minds eye, a little younger, a little more naive.

    >Right, I'm tired of waiting for more, and this was the highest roll.

You're slightly taller than the average girl your age, and healthy if not particularly athletic. Your friend is almost dwarfed by you though. Almost 6 inches shorter than you, dirty blond hair neatly combed strait over skin so pale it's almost albino. Almost rail thin as well. You quietly resolved then to get your friend outside more, and try to get some meat on her bones. To some degree, you were successful. Almost a stark contrast to her almost wraithish features, she was more vibrant and full of life than almost anyone you'd met before.

Looking away from the mirror, you found yourself in front of the study of Master Argus. After a brief and polite knocking, you hear his voice inside telling you to come in.

Walking in, you see the study wasn't quite what you were expecting. Other than a few weapons on racks and the knife being polished on the desk, it could have belonged to a rather fussy clerk.

Master Argus slowly looked up from his work and smiled as he saw you. "Ah. Cassandra and her little partner in crime Laura. Shouldn't you be setting one of Aria's apothecary tables ablaze?"

Laura blushed furiously letting out a stream of words you only half understood about how it wasn't your fault and that Aria never told them about the dangers of mixing clef-root and Vinegar be fore Argus cut her off with a short laugh.

"Easy lass, it was only a jest. Now, what can old Argus do for you young ladies?" His manner was easy and relaxed, almost grandfatherly. It was hard to believe then that he ranked among the world's deadliest men. Looking back, you wonder if that was the point.

"A wise enough course of action. I send all my students to Tybalt for at least basic swordplay instruction." Examining the two of you more closely, he added "It might not be a bad idea for you two either. With your other studies you wouldn't be sword masters, but know which end to hold and which to stab with would certainly help if you ran into any unsavory types. Magic isn't an unstoppable weapon, a clever opponent could bypass any aid it might give; even turn it against you." He gave both of you a level look "If you go against any such foes in the future, you'll be glad to have a bit of steel to fall back on should your casting prove ineffective."

He stood and circled you a few times. "A fair warning though, if you wish to learn from me you must realize that my training will be almost as demanding as your studies under Aria. Perhaps more so, since I have less time to teach it in. He poked you gently in the ribs, just to the side of your bust "I think you might be a bit too soft for the kind of training I have to teach." He glared at the pair of you for a minute. You realized that Laura had been shrinking back from the Master Assassin, but she seemed to draw strength from your flippant tone.

After a long, uncomfortable moment of silence, Argus threw back his head at let out a single short bark of a laugh.

"You've got a bit of fire in you, and no lack of venom on your tongue. Good, if you were so easily scared away you would never have lasted a day in my tutelage." You saw what looked like decades melt from his posture as he moved back behind the desk. "In truth though I'm not as old as I may seem." Slipping his hood back from his head, you saw that he wasn't the aged withered old man you thought, but was closer akin to Tybalt, in his early 40s, flecks of gray through his almost midnight black hair and emerald green eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Lesson one: never trust a first impression. We'll get started on the rest tomorrow." With that the hood went back up, and his voice went back to the usual withered tone "Now if you young ladies would be so kind, I have some paperwork to attend to."

With those words he made a dismissive gesture towards the door.

    >Right then, you've made a choice as to your main focus (Mage) and chosen to take some sub-lessons in Assassin on the side. Let me explain what this means in terms of crunch: You have ten points that you spend on your education, determining how good you are at each thing. Since your specialty was Mage, you have to spend a minimum of 5 points on it. Since you decided to take some lessons from Argus, you have to spend at least two points on the assassin category. The remaining categories are Warrior and Miscellaneous. Argus suggested that it might be prudent to put a point or two into Warrior, and Miscellaneous refers to non-career related skills you might have picked up: Calligraphy, cooking, cartography, etc. Anything thing of negligible importance stat wise that doesn't fit easily into one category or another.

    >Note: if you name something specific with the points you might choose to put into the Misc. department, you have a bit more skill at that particular thing. One per point, same thing can be named multiple times.

The next two years you learned at a blistering pace, spending your days under Aria's careful guidance, your evenings learning something of the Assassin's craft, and spending your weekends alternating between training with arms under Tybalt and resting. Your muscles toned slightly, but not quite enough to lose the impression that you were one good eating binge from developing a slightly less hat healthy shape.

Your friend Laura stood with you for most of it, when she wasn't distracted by things like a certain roguishly charming young man who trained under Tybalt.

On several occasions Argus complimented you on your skill, and how if you had chosen to be one of his acolytes instead you could have been a Master Assassin in under a decade if you so chose. If anything, your friend Lauren seemed to be doing BETTER than you when it came to the art of stealth, her smaller frame aiding her greatly. The only one who seemed able to best the two of you was a young man named Neil who seemed at times to be as skilled as Argus.

Aria was pleased that you did so well at the 'quick and dirty' art of evocation, and didn't seem to suffer much in your practice of thaumaturgy. Curiously Lauren seemed almost incapable of combat magic, but her Thamaturgy impressed even the illusive Lord Blackwell, the academy's patron. Her paper on meta-magical theory was apparently making the rounds in the magic community, as her work seemed to be on the verge of disproving several very common beliefs about the fundamental nature of magic.
    >> The Chronicler 03/09/11(Wed)03:59 No.14181133

Neither of you stood out on Tybalt's field though. You certainly knew 'which end to hold and which to stab with' but not much more than that. Lauren showed slightly more promise, receiving 'personal lessons' from a Bluto Draggard, one of Tybalt's better students.

One area that you quietly excelled at was drawing connections others seemed to miss: how an assassin's training prepared them for medical practices since they had to understand both the poison and the cure as a matter of course. How an excited horse only needed a little apple and a soothing voice to be calmed, the same way you might stop a child from tantrum. How your calligraphy lessons could be used to mimic the hand of others.

Everyone marveled at the rather exceptional crop of students, you standing almost first even among those lofty standards.

Then.... tonight happened. You still shudder to think of it.

And for reference the 96 *was* the first result, the '1' was the result of improper rolling.

    1. Sure

    2. I'm fine with it being more behind the scenes, less likely people will bitch about mechanics and try to rule-lawyer

    3. Beats me. "Cass Quest?"

I ran with it, so it's irrelevant in any case.

The d100 roll was for how other people had fared, and who/what was approaching.

Pretty much everything under 95 was really bad. Other possibilities was seeing a mortally wounded Laura murdered by some sort of beast in front of you in a rather Gorey fashion, Neil being evil and capturing you for the yet unseen evil, and/or raping you.

I mean, even the better ones (80-95 range) involved at least one horrible death of a friend.

Also, that rape torture scenario? that was mid 20s. You almost had a ten thanks to the failed roll. You don't want to know how bad the ten was,

I am glad that you think it worth continuing. We'll have to see as to what the ends up like, but I'm thinking about doing this again tomorrow afternoon/evening, depending on how things go in my real life.

    1. Glad people don't hate it.

    2. Noted. I'll only give out details when relevant then, at least for now.

    3. Lacks that certain something. Oh well, maybe see what others think.

Anyway, I'm going to archive this for future use.

Going with Cass Quest at least for now.
