You are a gargoyle perched atop a massive bell tower along with several of your fellows. They are currently playing cards.

The dark city stretched below seems inviting.

    What do you do?

Long have you envied the mortals for their ability to let loose humorous and smelly gases.

You call one of the gargoyles playing cards "Jerry". He looks at you in confusion. None of you have ever had any names. He looks down at his cards intently at your query, then after about half a minute, looks back up at you.

    "What's a three?"

You see no taxis in service below. The clock has both sticks pointed toward its upper half. Most humans are asleep now.

You make a mental note to be on the lookout for taxis.

Teach Jerry his ABC's and 123's.

You egg "Jerry" on to come help you fight the good fight.

He raises a clawed hand and extends a single finger from it like the cab driver you saw the other day. None of the others have ever been as adventurous as you, it would take something really interesting to get them moving.

"Quit calling me Jerry!" He snarls, as you walk towards him with the teaching stick. You try and teach "Jerry" his alphabet by writing it in his hand and saying "Wawa", like you saw in that movie. He seems concentrated on his hand of cards. You finally start hitting him on the head with the teaching stick, counting as you do so.

You abandon teaching your friend. He has an abnormally thick skull.

You wait for the old human to come out of the church, gleefully holding a bucket of water you've been saving for months. You morph your head to have a hole at the at the back, open your mouth, and pour ice-cold water on him with perfect accuracy.

The old man says some interesting words you've never heard used with each other.

You see another human jab him in the side with a small black stick, and he continues out of the church towards a black limousine, an 80's model if your memory serves.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)02:28 No.14084238

You usually just point at each other and say "you!" It's worked for a hundred years or so.

There are a few other gargoyles in the city as well, some friendly, some not so much.

The one you repeatedly call jerry is confused by the spectacle, and inevitably loses his playing cards. they spiral down through the cityscape, and three of your companyons dive into the air to fetch them.

The man leading the priest to the limousine looks up at the three gargoyles spiraling through the air, catching the falling cards.

"What the fuck!" He shouts, firing his gun off at them.

Two of your friends, distracted by the sudden noise, crash into each other. There is a loud crunch as they hit the ground.

    The limousine begins speeding away.

You don't understand. Normally Jerry would have been angry, ready to throw you off of the roof, at 11. He should be furious.

But all he's doing is laying there.

    Why isn't Jerry moving?

The other gargoyle lands on the ground with a few cards in hand.

    "This isn't fucking funny Jerry."
"Jerry...? C'mon, man, I was only fucking trying to help. You gotta get that GED if you want to make anything of yourself..."
Your companions look at each other in confusion. One shakes his head.
"Don't fucking do this to me Jerry... I didn't mean it... Wake up, Jerry.... Wake up..."
The others finish picking up the deck and fly back to the roof, leaving you with the teaching stick limp in your hands, the rubble of Jerry, and a horrid urge to leak water from your eyes.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)02:52 No.14084469

You're confused, the other gargoyle who hit Jerry isn't moving either. No amount of name-calling or stick abuse has caused them to react. You have never encountered anything like this before, and you assume the thinker position to help you think.

The other gargoyle looks down at the two 'goyles on the ground. "Why isn't Jerry moving?" He asks.

You feel a deep emptiness inside of your chest. You curse your intellect as the other gargoyle flies back to the roof like nothing happened.

You snap the teaching stick as you regard Jerry's remains.

You have learned: What it means to die.

It starts to rain, the droplets of water running down your stone cheeks in a mocking facsimile of tears.

You feel a mass of emotion well up inside of you. Like when a prank is played upon you, you feel anger. Like when you see something you do not understand, you feel confusion. Like when something had been taken from you, you feel sadness.

Jerry's open mouth serves as a cup for the rain, his lifeless eyes staring out at you, almost as though he wants something.

    What does Jerry want?
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)03:12 No.14084585
It is cruel that Gargoyles have come to know this night the pain of humans. Death should not come to creatures of stone. Sadness and guilt should not invade your granite heart. You are a Gargoyle. Impervious to time. But time and suffering have entered your world.

Is this what it is to be human? Is this what the old man of the church feels?

The old man. The black stick that was pointed into his back made the sounds that caused Jerry to fall. The old man might be hurt by it as well. The stick might cause the old man to die, just like Jerry.

No one should die. Jerry wants you to keep the old man alive.

    You leave him there.

You feel the icy cold wind and rain across your stone body, the dark clouds overhead releasing an unending stream of water. Water that Jerry and the other gargoyle can no longer pour from their mouths.

    You left Jerry lying there.

The city is a blinding mass of confusion, silent and deep. You spot moving conical lights in the distant road and arc your wings to head towards them. You think of that man with the old priest, his hand on the soaked white shoulder as he pushed him into the car.

    You left Jerry lying there.

Because Jerry didn't like to be touched.

The car stops outside of a large, rectangular building with metal siding and massive doors.

You feel heat at the center of your chest as you stalk over the roof. You may be made of stone, but you are almost silent. You have had years and years and years to perfect being silent. Even if you weren't, the tapping of the rain on the walls of the building would mask any noise you make.

You creep up to a large glass skylight in the center of the building.

You can see the man with two others about his age inside, the old priest being tied to a chair, with a great spotlight centered on him. You can't make out what they're saying, but the man from before has the stick in hand, using it to illustrate what he is saying. You can see similar sticks colored like metal in the hands of the other four men.

    What will you do?
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)03:41 No.14084773

You want to break through this glass and destroy the man with the loud stick. You want to rip him apart, to spray his innards everywhere, to eviscerate him and his companions. He deserves to die.

    >> He deserves to die.

The thought stops you cold. You are terrified that you would think such a thing. That you would WANT a creature to die... It felt like wanting Jerry to die. Death should come to no one. You will not bring it to this one. You won't kill him, not like you killed... Not like Jerry died.

    You decide to wait.

You break from the scene to give the roof a closer look. You spy some bits of metal that you could scrape on the walls, as well as a fist-sized stone.

    You have acquired: Fist-Sized stone.

You hear a thunderous crack that makes you jump as you pick the stone up. Rushing back to the skylight, you can see the stick smoking and a mark on the floor next to the old man. The man who had shoved him in the car waves his arms around, you can make out a few words.

"Since when do you get to decide what's RIGHT?"

You hear a smacking sound and the old priest grunt. You peek around the corner of one box to see the man with the stick in hand, having brought it across the old man's face. He coughs, deep red liquid coming from his mouth in a slow drip onto the floor.

"He may not have been a good man, but he was MY BROTHER! He felt bad about what he did, and YOU betrayed his trust." The man holds the sides of his head, turning and walking away from the priest.

"Oh lord." The priest says, his head wobbling like a leaf in the wind as he looks over to the man. "Son, don't do this."

The man stops, standing as still as a statue. "My brother fries on Saturday." He turns slowly, raising the stick to point it at the old man. You hear a click from it. "He isn't going alone. Say your prayers, Father."

"Our father, who art in heav'n, hallowed..." The old priest starts, sobbing as he comes to the end of the first verse.
