No/tg/erudoes! Are you tired of Nintendo's codex creep, and the constant release of new armybook after new armybook for the Hylians while armies like the Gerudo or Shiekah are at risk of being Dwarfed? It gets annoying if you play an army that doesn't accept Link as its spiritual liege.

What all can one do if they're playing Gorons nowadays? Their main advantage, their otherwise unblockable charge by roll-attack, is hard-countered by Hylian Skirmishers laying down bomb-chus. It's unfair. Help a Megaton player out?
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)20:30 No.14068776

Goddamnit Nintendo, can't you guys do proper game balance? An all-flier race is going to be OP as all get, due to maneuver advantages and wind-magic.

Too messy for its own good, and the splats were grossly incompatible with each other. While being able to plug Banjo-Kazooie into Donkey-Kong Country worked, or Perfect Dark into Jet Force Gemini, the moment someone tried to break out the Blast Corps Supplement, the whole game fell apart.

I'm sick of Nintendo's incompetence in this, and we should do our part as players to update the Ikana to Twili Edition.

What were they known for? Expendable stalchildren waves, blue bubbles, and the occasional Beamos weapon emplacement, acting in support of a smaller elite group of undead Samurai. Captain Keeta should go in as well, as being able to unlock better formations for the stalchildren also.

I wish Servants of Majora would get a new dex...

The background has Majora as the Mad God, the thing that nearly ended Termina in three days and bested the Hero in minutes. While it was trapped in a Mask.

What did we get? A joke of an upgrade to Skull Kid, the worst Leader in the dex, and no change to his weapons mastery or tactical skill. He just gets a crap rule and +3 bonus to spellcraft!

What's the new Hylian dex say? "Brought the risen spirit down with a single slash from his sacred blade"? I call bullshit, no mention of the Masks and makes the Giants into spectators.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)20:49 No.14069068
No one plays Twili. They just take the Hero of Twilight Hylian Leader and strip the best units over.

Navi is annoying but her ability to lead a unit of Fairy Squads to taunt and kite enemy melee units is good for when you need to draw "detection units" away from Sheik's infiltration team. Do it right and you can even kill the bosses by infiltration and laying Goron Demolition Charges.

So it's about as balanced as the core game really. Not saying much, but still.

Gerudo is pretty good, to be honest. Very mobile, fairly strong, and the ability to jump back an inch after any conflict with another unit is orgasmic. Hell, it'd break them if they weren't so damn fragile, especially for how much they cost.

Yeah, I wish they'd kept the old supplement for Spirits of the Well instead. Anyone remember when Bongo-Bongo had stats? Now he's just a oneliner in the Hylian dex.

    Feels bad, man.

Also, will Ninendo ever resolve the canon ending of the Terminan Masks campaign? The Twili Edition Codex implies he died, but doesn't say it outright. Would be nice to know.

Yeah, but his rules are outdatted as hell, and the King of Thieves model is hideous. Hell, the Mask Salesman's minature's larger when assembled.

I think they're part of the Undead Hordes army.

Y'know, Stalfos, Gibdos, Poes and Redead.

If I were you, I'd get the Stalord as a leader, grab two units of Stalfos and fill out with Poes.

Send the poes around to flank, if they get shot, they get to go invisible for a turn, and your Stalfos come back on a roll of 6 if they die.

Depends on which army variant you're using. If using the desert Gerudo base army, Ganondorf is available in his generic "Warchief" mode; you don't get any of the Phantom or Triforce variants either.

The key with Gerudo is that your cavalry archers are expensive yet tactically versatile, while you have a good set of elite, though fragile, infantry choices. Bladedancers tear through unshielded units, although you need to beware when fighting Kokiri players who spam Deku Bombers.

Also, having access to Ice Arrows is really useful for stunlocking enemy casters, and the Iron Knuckles (pic related) are an excellent (though expensive!) tank.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)21:06 No.14069321
Iron Knuckles are the best unit in any codex. Period. Just watch out for units with the bombardier special rule or bomb arrows, or those requisition points'll go up in smoke and flames.

It's all about the MSU and going for "more" units over "better" units in most cases. I don't like Knuckles myself, due to their lack of all-comer viability, and slowness. If they could tote siege weapons, I'd use them...

Twinrova would be nice, but ask yourself: Wouldn't it just be simpler to take them as their base Koume and Kotake forms? This way it remains tougher to tie them up in assault by some sacrificial hero with defensive magic or rupee-burning armor, while you can focus on killing more of the enemy. Don't underestimate the power of having the "light" Iron Knuckle bodyguard...

Though I would rather just use Nabooru for her command bonuses instead. Call me crazy.

Twili player here. Does anyone besides me use them for a non-Majora army? Shit, I just got a Twilight Princess and a Twilight Warlord the other day, and I'm not even sure how to fit them in without losing anything.

Which is really why I like the Twili now that I think about it. Every other army relies on throwing one or two hero units at you, and with Twili you can just have an army of beasts and regular soldiers and still win.

Oh, you're using that list choice? Give them Masks of Truth.

True story, Heroes die to units of Sheikah Civilians if they're lead by Oathkeepers with Masks. Not as good as it was back in Ocarina or even Mask edition, but still nasty.

    >Miss the "Field of arms" special rule for Dead Hands...
    >> MagicJuggler !sMYbIFo6TI 02/27/11(Sun)21:49 No.14069902
You take the Deadhand for its disruption abilities and ability to blast everything when it emerges from the ground. Also, being able to face-lock archers on the initial drop is useful for getting the rest of an army into position.

Taking more than one Dead Hand (can you even do that nowadays? Fucking old-edition rules interacting with the new edition) would be redundant since the extra hands would have nothing they could grab onto, and for the price, you could just grab more Shiekah disciples.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)21:51 No.14069921

    >> MagicJuggler !sMYbIFo6TI 02/27/11(Sun)21:56 No.14069989
You're thinking too much like Warmateria, where a well-placed assassination run ends the game right then and there! You need an army where you can properly attrition your foe to death, or barring that, hold objectives and make assault a difficult propsition. Shiekah are not much for holding ground, but are great at defeat-and-detail.

Remember that smoke bombs are also useful for blocking off any remaining fire-lanes while you charge into combat. You have the ability to make a free move-after-melee, which allows you to wave-dash, while Shiekh herself is able to continually dash off enemy models should she land hits on them. With enough luck she can disable an infantry line just enough for your rank-and-file to finish them off with poison-needles, or the Composer Brothers using death magic.

So, fa/tg/uys, check out my recent Iron Knuckle list.

Twinrova 250pts (Yeah, I know the twins are really expensive, but the immunity to Fire and Ice is pretty nice!)
Guardian Knuckle - Great Axe, Enhanced Plating = 155pts
Guardian Knuckle - Great Axe, Enhanced Plating = 155pts
Guardian Knuckle - Great Axe, Enhanced Plating = 155pts
    Iron Knuckle Phalanx (3) - 225pts
    Iron Knuckle Phalanx (3) - 225pts
    Iron Knuckle Phalanx (3) - 225pts
    Iron Knuckle Phalanx (3) - 225pts

    Total: 1615pts

I want to make a proper 2000 point list, what else should I add? Considering that each Iron Knuckle has Purposefully Encumbered, making them move only 3" per turn, I can't really cover much ground. I do appreciate the 2 wounds each gets, and 3 the Guardians have. I want a faster moving skirmisher, however. What from the Gerudo list is good to add? I might be able to take Darknuts as mercenaries from the Twilight Princess addon, but they're awfully expensive. Are they worth it?

I demand an archive so that there is proof that this shit happened.

    Already archived.

Dekus aren't worth the points in an Odolowa list. Take minimal Creature choices (Use Stone Tower's choices, they let you take Garos to get the basics out of the way ) and give Oldolowa maximum sorcerous powers. Remember, you want to counter the "dies to fire arrows" problem ASAP.

My codex is a bit outdated, and I don't yet have the cash together to get the newest one... can Hookshot still be used for attack-at-range as well as the movement increase, or did that get nerfed to just the move bonus? I've heard folks claiming both.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/11(Sun)22:55 No.14070795

Last I checked, it now works as a charge, with a slightly longer range, double is using the longshot, and it gives you +2 to hit, due to them being stunned

Hey guys, I want to start playing and was looking at Forces of Darkness because the mounted moblins look badass, but I'm kind of leery about this commander the boxset comes with. His stats are really good, and he's tough as hell, but then he's got this "I Fight for the Strongest" rule were if you begin to lose by a certain margin, he leaves the battlefield or even switches sides! Is he worth using?

Blue Shells look like they'll be too expensive for what they do, since usually by the time you can line up a proper shot, the Karts would slagged into wrecks by proper application of magic or firepower.

Much simpler to use more Green Shells, and occasionally equip the Karts with turbo-mushrooms for last-turn objective-contesting. In a crossover game, Gorons would of course just roll oveer the Karts, although equipping the occasional Banana-launcher to alter the direction they roll is humorous, especially when bomb-toting Gorons roll into each other!

Yeah, but Magikoopas have a RIDICULOUS cost to them, and their loyalty blows. You pretty much have to count on your opponent to fail dangerous terrain checks in order to get by.

I still don't understand why I don't see more Bullet Bill builds. Those things just wreck incoming infantry, and the fact that their source keeps firing even when the original is out of play is just ridiculous for what you pay to get that on the table.

So they've finally started leaking the rumors on Timesage about what the Mushroom Kingdom:
-We're talking fragile. Their models usually fall over in a single hit.
-Lots of "buff" options. One of their main leader choices looks to be called a Starseer, and can use starspirits to heal, cause enemies to fall asleep, buff the statlines of units, etc.
-Another hero is the Fortuneteller, who allows the Mushroom Kingdom player to draw on a Tarot deck in order to apply gamewide buffs and debuffs.
-Heroes are able to equip "Badges" from the Armory which either unlock new abilities or enhance existing ones.
-Should you be taking Mario as a hero, he has the option to take a Party of Sidekicks, sergeant-level models which give a variety of special attacks and abilities to him.
-Karts *are* in. They use a modified version of the old Nintendo Kart Kommando rules They can either move 6" and turn up to 90 degrees in a turn, or they can move 12" and turn up to 45 degrees. With a successful drive check, some kart drivers can instead perform a "Power Slide", where a vehicle moves 6", turns 45", but remains moving in the same direction; a failed check results in the vehicle spinning Out-of-Control.
-Karts are fragile. Lots of upgrade options however, including Mushroom-charged engines, Shells, decorative Fireflowers...
-The old Yoshis from the Rogue&Watch series of games are in as a mount option. They can eat small models but a single well-placed hit will result in a morale check to ensure the Yoshi doesn't run away.
-In addition to normal deployment options, they have the ability to deploy by Warp Pipe, with 2 pipes available per Mario Brother taken (so 4 should Mario and Luigi join up). They either act as additional points to enter from reserve, or to rapidly move from one point of the map to the other.
-Rumors remain at large as to whether Bowser is available as a mercenary ally.

If your opponents still let you, the Termina list from Nintendo Power's old Player's Choice series did it better. For all their musical pretensions, the Indigo-gos were great as an elite combat unit, while being able to bring a drummer team to play Goron's Lullaby is also useful for countering the Rock-Roll. Elegy of Emptiness is also nice for generating mobile cover for your band to entrench themselves, while they keep attritioning your foes.

Not having access to Suns Song can be a problem when dealing with ReDeads of course.

Dude, I wouldn't bother with Armos.

Almost every faction can, and normally will, bring bombs to the field, which will fuck them up badly.

If you want to play a Monster force:

    Leader: King Dodongo

    Specials: Giant Octorok x 2

    Cavelry:1 unit Gohma Skitterers

Monstrous Hordes are always entertaining even if most people just take them as mercenaries in other lists. It's a shame they don't get much in the way of casters though (though the Wizrobe is a moderate caster for his summons/blast attacks), but what can be done about that?

That said, I'd probably bring some Dinolfos alongside your Keese, if only to help transform them into Fire Keese. You could probably do the same with Freezos and Ice Keese, but they don't have the means to keep up with the rest of your army...

Cuccos are the most OP unit every not only due to the thousand pecks of death rule but also the village pest rule which state that should one Cucco mini fall two more will take its place. That and each Cucco cost only 20 points.

Although, maybe if I had the keese form up in front... they're fast enough that maybe they could take fire instead...

    -Cursed Kingdom of Ikana
    -Terminan Defense Force

    For Hammerbro:
    -Mushroom Kingdom
    -Koopa Kingdom
-Boo Kingdom (from what I saw, King Boo is an associate and not necessarily a subject of Bowser)
-The Shy Guy Kingdom (scattered throughout a series of pocket dimensions, lairs, etc. While they occasionally do mercenary work for Bowser, Smithy, Wort, or other enemies of the Mushroom Kingdom, they're isolationist otherwise.)
-The X-Nauts (these guys are supposed to be "new" and all technological and all).
-The Smithy Gang (although they're at risk of being Tatanga'd).

Undead Horde don't come under Monsterous Horde either, they're things like Stalfos, Poes, Gibdos and such.

No one ever expects to be suddenly trapped in an ever tightening ring of Dancers that can dance for a variety of buffs to my attacking line AND drop lava every turn.

ok so kirby being able to take one aspect of the last unit he rolled max damage against AND having to declare copy before you know the roll is totally fair and balanced right? and the fact that copy does shit damage.... AND the fact power scan costs 20 more points to let you roll one under and doesnt increase copys power at all, but you probably play goron or hylian so its totally fair right

they need a new codex so bad its not even funny i just dont think nintendo cares about any faction besides hylian armies. i mean 12 variants of the same army with the newest codex is total crap and you know it. dreamland army is broken, there are three mushroom kingdom armies and two are useless because the mushroom kingdom has the bullshit rule of two leaders on field. its like if you tried to pick up a bowser army or a metaknight army you are guaranteed a loss against any army with a recent codex. i switched over to bounty hunters because you can spilt hunters from their squads and they can still operate worth a damn. i just want to run my kirby army without having a guaranteed loss, just a box of miniatures collecting dust now

They don't update the Smithy Gang because there's still some copyright issues over the teamup with the publishers of Warmateria. Hence why Nintendo tries to pretend Geno never existed.

Things like Bean Kingdom, Shroobs, X-Nauts and shit are supposed to be sort of replacements/spiritual sucessors to the original SG. At least Fawful is awesome, but I miss my Axem Rangers.

    Tube lists are retarded.

All you need is a few baddies to tie up the enemy, preferably Ridley, some artillery Space Pirates to zap the enemy away, and subterranean Kraid in reserve.

Dude, I've wiped a pure Link (through Time) list in a tourney with my trusty Ridley.

Just because faggots in your game store don't know how to play Space Pirates doesn't mean Space Pirates are shit.

Yeah, play a better Army. Go Gereudo if you want Knuckles. That said, Poes are joke units. One sword hit and they die, and don't think the Incorporeal rule'll save you.

If you take Poes, either take a few or a full ten, upgrade at least one with "Guide Lantern", and give them Undying Malice

Are poe that underpowered now? I've been out of the loop for a few editions, and I felt like starting a new army rather than dusting off my old Tektike list.

I like the feel of the Ocean Temple fluff, and, lets face it. Phantoms will wreck Iron Knuckle's shit. Only things that stand a chance against phant's is something with Agility or an AOE spell that it can get behind the bastards.

Ocean Temple just has too few troops choices. Just Wizzrobes, Poe, and Rats.

Don't suppose anyone else here plays Ocean Temple? I can't decide how to field Bellum. His natural reach and attacks are nice, but possessing enemy heroes in exchange for vulnerability to light-based attacks is also nifty. Is he a situational unit?

I found an awesome way to deal with those fags who spend all their points on Link, buffing him to stupid levels.

    Shiekah army.

Stalfos - They come back on a roll of 6
Shiekah Well Lord - Buffs the undead, Stalfos roll to get back up becomes 3+
Wallmaster - Can grab a unit and take it back to it's controllers side of the board, units targeted get a roll to avoid it, unless they're in combat.

See where I'm going with this?

Nah, go Gerudo. Nintendo might not give them love anymore, but goddesses are they fun, tough, and fluffy. Whether you want Knuckleduster army smashers (bit weak against siege defenders though) or a fast, all-mounted band of thieves, the Gerudo is the army to play.

-Being deficient in humor, most units are a "Rhymes with Guy" Guy. Assorted units include:
    -Shy Guy: Rank-and-file
-Spy Guy: Sneaky infiltrator, good with camo/slingshooting.
    -Sci Guy: Uses potions/alchemy.
-Medi Guy: Flies a mini Koopa-copter and heals your Guys.
-Mini Guy: See pic, a heavy-weapon guy.
-Fly Guy: Has Balloons and a propeller, slingshots opponents.
    -Fry Guy: Carries a flamethrower.
-Anti Guy: An assassin unit, known for being in all-black and hitting like Biggoron!
-Sly Guy: A skirmish model, known for getting bonuses for ganging up with single models.
-Gas Mask Guy: An "Elite Shyguy" armed with a gas mask that shoots bullets.
-General Guy: Commander/leader, rides a giant tank.
-Psi Guy: Alternate commander, able to use psionics.

Aside from this, they get a bunch of warmachines, pirate ships, tanks, etc. They're there for "heavy armor".

Here I was thinking that it was because he has a 50% chance of healing every time he kills a model, to make things worse, on 6s he gains ALL of his health back. So if he gets beat up all he needs to do is find a unit with crappy saves and then he is back up to full again. This is why the Hunters list is best against Hylia, they don't have large units with crappy saves.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)14:35 No.14075897
And then you can rip him to pieces with sorcery, bladedancers, or even Knuckles. (Best to keep Knuckles in pure lists, but mixed does have advantages.)

Most people take the full upgrades; it's rare to see a basic Link. After all, you'll go through 3 hearts and hero's tunic like tissue paper, fairy bottles or not. Master sword's also the second most common upgrade...

Nintendo sucks balls, there I said it. They can't keep their fluff consistent, have 0 concern for balance in any of their games if the dev team love an army more than any others (I'm looking at you Mushroom, Kong, and Hylians), and fuck even trying to get a straight answer on a semi-neutral faction like koopas (1-5th editions bad ba guys 6-7 midle ground 8th right back to fucking enemies, see problems with fluff.)

His jump and stomp by itself is disgusting (hell, it's the one feature tauted about the brothers more than anything else), so I don't see why I should buff it any more. I like my commanders to be versatile, and although yes, it's hella expensive, both Fire and Lightning powers give him so many options. That morale penalty people keep complaining about is too overblown (plus it's nothing that can't be fixed with Mari or Daisy or Peach as subcommander(s)). I think he's honestly just as powerful a commander as the One in Red.

In fact, I'll say it right now: my Luigi and Mushroom Guards can take on any Link. Come at me, bro.

if you dont have superboot you take damage from pointy enemies like spearmen, the extra damage is a plus. also if you play mushroom instead of bean kingdom you get subcommanders as a full commander for free and they can be bunched as a squad and share morale. seriously its much more worth it to make the brothers team. i dont really feel that bean troops are that much better then toad troops considering you get that much stonger of a hero

Knuckedusters, maybe with sorcery upgrades. They can kill anything if played right. Link on Epona, with Midna, Twilit Imp as a Companion can also kill that pretty nicely. Enjoy Bomb Arrow Volley/Master Sword/Fused Shadows in the same round.

Guys, do you play the new Final Fantasy tabletop? I just played my first game yesterday. My 1000 pts Palamecian Empire army got wrecked by a Shinra player. God, Square Enix, can you stop milking FF7 already? That guy's Sephiroth with Masamune upgrade singlehandedly wiped out half of my troops. Fucking imbalanced.
Anyway, any good Palamecia builds? Or should I get some Exdeath's Rift Demons instead? They seem cool. Are they viable?
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)14:51 No.14076113
Knuckles are nearly invunerable to standard attacks (except bombs, damnit), Bladedancers get stupidly high speed and Agile, and bog-standard Ganon gets Triforce of Power and the best sorcery in the game. Gandondorf, King of Thieves gets a cheap mount, decent sorcery, and relentless pursuit.

I've said it before and will say it again, Gereudo rock. Y'all are just haters.

Each Sage can use their races hidden treasure.

Nabooru + Mirror Shield + Silver Gauntlets will fuck a lot of shit up.

Plus the fact she has Agile, Spirit Magic Mastery and Seduction means that she is a really, really good leader choice.

I love using Seduction on Hylian armies. Taking control of their bowmen for a turn and shooting Link in the back it trolling of the highest calibur.

Not everything needs to be solved with stomping. Learn to think laterally. And I just said I play a Mushroom army. Daisy as co-commander is almost as disgusting as Mario: she's not as timid as Peach, she hits hard by herself, and all that geomancy can fix the terrain and force the enemy through chokepoints, which makes easy pickings for my Mushroom Pikemen and Mushroom Archers. All that is to say nothing of the brother combos.

Part of me wants to try a Rosalina star army, though. I've heard she's disgusting, but she's finicky. Any info out there?

princesses should never be used to attack, their health pools are much to low. and the fact you can upgrade them for battlefield wide passive upgrades for keeping them in the headquarters just makes it better.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)14:56 No.14076187
Sages? Oh dear, wherever did Ganon the Evil King come from. Crunch, smash, zap. One round, and most heroes and units go under. You'd have to be running something stupid like Majora incarnate or Hero of Time to face him one-on-one, and Sage lists haven't been worth the points for two or three editions now.

Hell, Rusl gets better equipment than some of those pricy sages. RUSL, the joke character with the Ordon Sword, Master Swordsman, and a Hawk?

I actually believe the Zelda games would have been a lot better without Ganondorf.
Ok fine, he could have been in Ocarina of Time, and you know, been that game's villain.

But why did they have to make him a standard character of the lore just like Ganon?... Orz

Hunters list with wooden crates and Samus Aran The Hunter properly kitted out, your move. Light armor, grapple beam, super sonic, and Super Missle/Bomb. She will walk through your army, literally, and probably have enough health left to do it again.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:01 No.14076241

Some sages are actually pretty good.

    Darunia with Megaton Hammer
    Nabooru with Mirror Shield.

But some are fucking horrible. Like Saria with the bow.

She's good with support, but most turns you're going to be playing the ocarina with here.

And don't get me started on Ruto.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:02 No.14076259

    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:03 No.14076271
If there is so much as a puddle of water on the board Ruto will eat entire armies by herself. Not something you want to rely on, but if you are playing in a 2s tournament you can always rely on it, because Zora players get to place water on the table.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:04 No.14076276
Pirates were never really a good Majora dex; they were more of a last-minute tie-in like the Snowpeak Gorons. Defenders had the opposite problem; too many people abused Mask Salesman/Hero of Masks combos and Song of Time. Add that to spamming Goron travellers, and no wonder Nintendo tried to remove Gorons altogether briefly. I'm just glad they stopped at the Dwarves and Defenders...(Still miss my Maskspam though.)
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:04 No.14076285

Oh, you must have it wrong.

    I don't play sage heavy.

Sages arn't there to be equals to Ganon or Link.

But some of them do buff their army to quite good degrees.

Personally, I like to run Twinrova than Nabooru. Sand Trapping units and getting free Iron Knuckles out of it is brilliant.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:04 No.14076288
Magikoopas were much hyped when they first come out, but the truth is Nintendo never intended for them to play a big part. The Koopa Kingdom is supposed to be frankenstein science, slightly steampunk type guys, so having wizards up the wazoo kinda takes away from that. They're there to explain how Bowser knows magic, and that's it.

OTOH, Nintendo seems to love Chomps. Not that I mind, Chomps rule.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/11(Mon)15:05 No.14076294
Codex: Koholint looks like another facepalm. So much potential, yet it's basically "king of the hill", and you are FORCED to use the board design from the codex.

    That's not the worst, though...

Shelling out 250 bucks for a plastic egg? The reward for winning is "your campaign was a dream, lose all your exp"?

    Seriously, Nintendo? Seriously?
