Once I was but a lowly shreep-tender, forever toiling in the service of the great wizard Adan, but those idyllic times have since passed by.

Summoned to his tower, I held hopes that my years of drudgery had paid off, and that I was to be inducted into the ranks of magic, but in my haste I activated a strange scroll - a writing even Adan could not pierce - and brought a nearby skull back to an ill and nearly mindless half-life!

Banished from Adan's sight, I fled his tower to the dungeons below, where demons not of this earth lay imprisoned. Adan's magic had been denied me, but that dim form offered me power - power beyond measure - and asked no price save that I would take its proffered gift.

With the book's power, I found myself able to draw forth fire and raise up the dead... but the book's dark influence brought the red cloud of murder to my every thought. In a confused rage I murdered my old rival Jenny the Harlot, returning to my senses only in time to hide her corpse.

Turning again to the book's dark magic, I brought back at least a part of her...

...but before I could bind her to my will she attacked and killed the merchant Salmo!

Fearful that Adan had witnessed those dark transpirings, I fled my home and the only town I've ever known, finding passage with a brash young sailor seeking his own way. Strangely, he not only recognized the unquiet dead that traveled with me but was unconcerned by their existence!

The river's current moves swiftly, and nothing stirs save for the rhythmic splashing of Bob's paddles. Though we fled the town just ahead of the dawn's light, the sun now stands high overhead.

A strange and somehow foreboding ruin passes by, and its presence stirs James to break our long silence.

"Ruins of the Empire," he says, sensing my unease.

"In the last Great Age, the Empire of the Dragon stretched all the way to the southern wastes. These ruins are all that's left to mark its passing."

"Some may claim they're haunted by the ghosts of monarchs."

"We're in country now that hasn't seen an army for two hundred years or more. Your town was the last spot on the map... beyond that, who knows? I've heard tales of strange beasts that walk like men, or women who can change their shape, or even great monsters as big as the very hills that swallow shreep whole..."

"Say, I don't know about you, but all this talk is making me hungry! How about letting me have some of that shreep meat you promised me?"

With James' words I realize that I myself have not eaten anything since the events of the past night, and my stomach rumbles painfully. While he may be able to stomach raw meat, I cannot.
