A wailing squeak filled the central room of the command bunker, then the suddenly cut off. Then is started again, the metal-on-metal scream of moving parts in desperate need of oiling. Again the screech rang out, and the technicians who had been trying to ignore it started to wince and cover their ears. When would it end? they thought. They had been given very strict orders, and they treated her well as she reminded them of their own children that had been secreted away in the habitation clusters. But at times Zephyr could be trying.

“WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!” Zephyr screamed in childish delight as she spun around in the seat, her mousy red hair streamed out behind her. The chair swung around in an arc, letting out another ear-piercing cry as it completed three circles before she stopped it with a hand sallow due to lack of sunlight. She was 14, a time where a few generations ago she would be in school and playing with her friends in the backyard under the watchful eye of her mother. But the Xenos had changed all that. She had no backyard. She had no mother. She had no father. She had not brothers or sisters or aunts of uncles. They were all dead. Her friends now were soldiers, dying on battlefields far far away. But they were still her friends.

Her knobby knees were curled up against her chest in the brown baggy infantry coat she wore. Puberty was just kicking and she was in the awkward time of ever-increasing lanky limbs that made her look like a scarecrow. At least soon the issued brown coat wouldn’t trail behind her. She hoped she would look like her mother and always worried that somehow she would still inherit her father’s beaky nose. She guessed it wouldn’t be too bad if she looked like both of them; someone should keep their faces alive. Zephyr stopped her self again with a hand on the console in front of her and did not push off of it again. The rest of the room relaxed visibly and a few sighed, turning back down the volume on their headsets.

Zephyr rearranged her hair to run down her back, careful of the enhancement modules as she weaved her wavy red hair into something resembling order. It still needed a good brushing and the uneven lengths were riddled with split ends, but at least the louse powder had gotten rid of her little enemies. She really didn’t need to look nice for anyone, none of her friends ever got to see her, but her mother had always said that that was no excuse for looking like you just fell out of a barn. Screens on the monitor in front of her started to flicker to life as soldiers turn their helmet cameras on. While the battle had not gotten underway, infantry and armor were starting to mobilize and it was her job as TA to coordinate.

Her still high childish voice rung out in the minds of the lines of infantry she was chiding into formation.

There was no way to tell how long he lay there, bullets occasionally sending sprays of dirt at him as they impacted at the edge of his cover. From time to time the fire would stop and in the brief silence Polaski could hear the elevator. He knew almost immediately what it meant. Someone else was being put in the room with him. The thought made him wonder how many others were already here. In the dim gloom provided by the few lights, however, it was impossible to tell.

By the fifth time the gun fire had started again a girl had joined him in his ditch. She was handling the situation much better than Polaski had. Though she shook with fear, she did not break down, didn't curl into a ball and cry like he had. “We be moving forward,” she shouted over the noise, “Is only way out!”

They waited in silence until the next break in gun fire and when it came, they ran. Polaski had expected to be shot as soon as they stood up. Again he ran expecting to die at any moment, his heart pounding in his ears. “Down!” the girl shouted suddenly, grabbing Polaski by the arm and dragging him to the ground after her. They fell in a heap and had barely began to roll when they slammed into the remains of a shattered wall. Almost immediately the gun fire started again, bits of the wall raining down on them as it was shot at.

When Polaski finally got his bearings straight again, he was shocked to realize they'd stopped right next to one of the people that had been shooting at them. The gunmen was a boy, maybe three or four years older. Polaski tried repeatedly to get the boys attention without success. Weather the boy couldn't hear them or was actively ignoring them Polaski couldn't tell. All the boy did was stare intently down the sights of his gun and pull the trigger. Eventually Polaski gave up and slumped against the wall.

As they waited for the next pause in gun fire a morbid curiosity overcame Polaski. Wondering what held the gunman's attention so much, he looked back toward the elevator. To his surprise he saw dozens of red dots blinking in and out of existence. Each time a red dot came to life the area around it was pelted with gun fire. The realization that he wasn't specifically being targeted did little to relieve Polaski's mind. Especially when a bullet pierced through the wall just above his head. If someone had poor aim, or he moved the wrong way at the wrong time, he would be just as dead as if they were targeting him.

Eventually the gun fire paused again and Polaski and the girl ran for the next bit of cover. Polaski glanced back at the gunman once as he ran. The boy did not seem to notice their leaving, his attention firmly fixed on the other end of the room, waiting for the red dots to return to life. The pair encountered more such gunman as they slowly worked their way from cover to cover. Not one of them spoke or made any indication that they noticed the pair at all. When Polaski asked the girl what she thought of the gunmen she told him to be silent and wait for the next break in gunfire.
