    It's time. Let's do this.

You have just exited the jewlery shop, having sold one of the rings of regeneration. But it was worth it. In addition to the quite large sum of gold, you obtained an Oculas, a powerful artifact, normally used by the Old Empire's planar and telepathic researchers.

It beats like a heart as you hold it. It wants to be used.

John and Foran, your human and elf animal hirelings, and standing behind you, looking at the Oculas. Hmm. Maybe you might test it on them.

The sun is blocked by the clouds, and it has begun to rain. The bank closes in an hour. You could probably buy a workshop with the money from the ring. They may have some for sale.

    YAY YOU'RE BACK

    Hoo boy.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/11(Mon)20:52 No.13646287
So, first, couple of quick questions:

-How tall are you, especially compared to normal people/humans/elves?
-Is the jewlery shop you just left busy again? You didn't get your damn gem assayed.
-What, exactly, would the Oculas do to someone if you 'tested' it on them?
    >> GM 01/24/11(Mon)20:53 No.13646295
    Your inventory:
    1 Yourself
    1 Ring of Regeneration
    1 Amulet of Invisibility
    1 Rod of Lightning Evocation
    1 Oculas
    1 Fuck-huge diamond
    2 Bards
    >> Anonymous 01/24/11(Mon)20:55 No.13646326
    What does the oculas do?

Also, go to the bank and get our money.

    >>13646326
Wait. If the jewlers' shop isn't busy, we might need to go in there again.

    >>13646287
You are roughly 6'6". Above average, by about a head or so.

The jewelry shop is still opened, but another person is in line. You could get back in line, however it might seem odd.

The Oculas has the following powers:

    Mind Reading
    Mind Control
    Memory Manipulation
    Knowledge and Skill Extraction
    Knowledge and Skill Implantation
    True Seeing
    Scrying
    Planar Binding
    Dimension Anchor
    >> Anonymous 01/24/11(Mon)20:58 No.13646364
    >>13646349
We'll play with it later. Put the Oculas in your pack, and talk to an assistant in the jewler's shop if there's one available. If we don't get some face time in five minutes, it's off to the bank.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/11(Mon)21:04 No.13646460
    >>13646364
Also! Mage-knights, how powerful are they in comparison to yourself? How powerful were they back in the day?

Do they have knightly orders, or an organizational structure? Are they like warlords or free barons, every estate for itself? How do you become one?

We might as well try to play the role as best we can if we're going to fuck around with this persona.
    >> GM 01/24/11(Mon)21:05 No.13646467
    >>13646364
You place the Oculas in your pack. Carefully. Don't want it interfacing with the other magic items. That would be bad.

You go back into the shop. The man the jeweler was talking to has left in a huff. He looks mad. The jeweler looks at you, then him, then you.

"Looks like you bought that thing just in time. That other man was furious when I told him I'd sold it. Did you forget something?"

The man who left has the aura of a mage. Weaker than the other one, but still there.

I have no idea why we're back here.
    Ask this guy >>13646364
If it's about the diamond, it would be better to sell it at a larger city; a jeweler there would have more money to pay for it, and a bigger market that could actually afford it.
    >> GM 01/24/11(Mon)21:09 No.13646551
    >>13646460
Before the Empire fell, the Mage-Knights were its protectors. They were loyal only to the Emperor, and kept order in the provinces. By force, if necessary. Their organization was a mix of rigid hierarchy and individual cells, each capable of acting on its own, or working as a larger group with distinct leaders.

They were both above and below the aristocracy. If they told you to jump, you did, but at the same time they were not allowed to own property.

That changed as after the Fall. They began to NEED to own property to fund their efforts. So they because the equivalent of Barons. And that's how they stayed until you were deactivated.

It might still be that way.

    We answer merrily.

"Just wondering if I could get a ticket for that ring, in case I could convince you to let me buy it back at an exorbitant price later. Such a thing might come in handy next time I get into a bad scrape, you know how it is with my sort...And if not, do you plan to sell it at auction? Perhaps I'd like to attend and place some bids, I'm in the market for a fair few goods anyway. Trying to win a lady's favor is a task of endless gift-giving, ay?"

    >>13646518
Well, we might have a shot at getting our apparently ancient ring of restoration back. And we might be in the biggest city around. Give it a minute.

Also, we need to find out if our diamond is SO big that selling it would break the whole fucking gem market. The guy with the grape-sized one of unknown quality from last night was offered enough gold to buy a castle, and that was one-tenth of its auction value. You know who has jewels the size of a man's fist? Monarchs.

    2) In our back pocket, we have a magic item that reads minds. We can pull the knowledge out of his head later.
    3) What's five minutes' chat? I never said we should show him the diamond.
    4) This is exactly how pawnbroker-like jewlers operate. He's done nothing unexpected, his markup isn't the worst I've heard of IRL, and frankly, what would you do if the Hope Diamond fell in your lap?

After about five minutes of talking, and some bad animal jokes, you ask the human about metal trades.
"The price of iron and copper is way up. Must be the new ships the Vardan navy is making. They got metal plating all over them. I don't know how they stay afloat. A man with an iron deposit could be rich right quick."

Yeah, I bet. What about diamonds?

"Oh, yeah, I've sold a lot. Biggest one was the size of an eyeball, if you can believe that. I was just an auctioneer then, but I remember that my cut was the thing that allowed me to open this store. The thing sold for over 100000 gold! Went to some Royalty in the Drake Empire. The grandfather clock is roughly 5.1317 seconds off, and is losing time at a rate of 0.071 a day.

You turn to exit the jewelers. John and Foran are messing around with that egg again. You grab John's arm and the egg before it drops. Placing it back, you exit the building.

Observing the crowd and marking the buildings as you make your way to the bank, you spot three other mages, twelve trading company headquarters, and three reality companies. There are three banks that are not the jeweler's bank. It is roughly a mile to the bank on the docks, and the rain is letting up. People begin to crowd the streets again, cobblers cobbling, peddlers peddling, artists painting. A group of animals even do a dance, and other animals throw them money. You also spot twelve different pickpockets, one of which tries to take your bank note, but fails.

You have marked three workshops that would be very useful on your internal map.

You have arrives at the bank.

Sensing it is time to test the Oculas, you remove it from you pack stealthily and hide it in your robe's sleeve. Holding it in you hand, you reach out with your mind and activate it. It hums a vibration only you can feel, and you feel more aware of your surroundings. You can sense their minds, their thoughts. Everyone in the building. You know, on an intutive level, that if you wished you could make them do whatever you want, change their entire personality, erase their minds and force them to serve you.

You are aware of the Oculas' attempts to control you, however. It wants to dominate you, as it has most likely done to dozens of others who sought to use it. But your will and intellect are infinity great than its. You mentally command it, intimidate it, into serving you. It obeys. The humming and extended senses fade. It sits idly.

You reach out with it and touch the minds of the murderers. Well... smuggers, it seems. Reading their thoughts, you sense doubt. They do not wish to do this. But they have been commanded, and they fear the woman who leads them.

The man being threatened is innocent. All three know it. But the two don't want to admit it, for fear of the other not knowing and telling their leader of their doubt.

There was a mathematical term for that in the Old Empire.

Ease the mood of the smugglers and their would-be victim. Cool their tempers, they don't need to do anything rash.

Find out more about their boss - where does she live, what does she look like? You might as well know more about the power-brokers in town.

If she's some sort of crazy bitch that would best be put out of her misery. maybe we can just take over her criminal network. Otherwise, we could just nudge the smugglers mentally so they're willing to act on their knowledge of the man's innocence.

That way, no blood's spilled, and our cover's intact.

Otherwise, it can maybe be clobberin' time.

Breaking through their minds' defenses, you review their memories, importing them to your mind.

The woman's name is Anna. Anna Blackheart. She's a ruthless bitch, with a considerable skill at manipulating people. She used to run with the Raiders, but after she turned 18 she stopped. She joined up with one of the most powerful smuggling groups on the east coast of Northmourne, and slept her way to the top. Then she killed half the people and took it over. They've expanded a lot since then, and are now THE criminal faction in Port Adder. She lives in a mansion, and frequently holds larvish parties. Most people don't even know she's a criminal mastermind, and those that do either don't care, or are too afraid to go after her directly.

You also extract several images of her, for reference.

As an afterthought, you force of of the men to blurt out "I think he's innocent."

    "What, really?"

    "Um..."

"So do I. Dammit, what are we doing, Franky?"

    Awesome.

Plant a tiny seed in their minds about seeking a new master for the criminal network. It won't be particularly virulent until later, but it may pave the way to put Anna Blackheart out of power. Perhaps they should tell trusted underlings that this whole affair reeks and there's been enough blood on their hands for some time now, or something.

Check their brains for any information on how the criminal underground has come into contact with government spies, though. That could be interesting. Are there any standing arrangements?

The animal called Franky knows quite a bit regarding government ties. Ms. Blackheart helped rig the governor's election. It took some doing, and Franky was involved.

The other one, Max he's called, doesn't know much about government ties. But he does know a few dozen people who've expressed their disdain for Anna Blackheart. Who would gladly work for someone with the intelligence to do as well as her, without being as excessively cruel.

    Someone like you, perhaps?

They continue talking, your seed of control taking hold.

"We'd need to hide him for a few days. I could arrange a boat without her knowledge, but it would take at least a week. I don't know where he can go in the meantime though."

Well, you ARE about to found a mining company, by the look of it. The next thought you should put in their minds should relate to this - maybe if he goes off to wherever there's work, he can lie low with a miner's cover. There's likely enough quite a few men involved in extracting metal for the Navy, not all of them are press-ganged into it directly. Could even move his family out of danger, if you go and start a mining town.

Besides which, you're going to need a source of income that can sort of maintain itself while you're turning your deactivated features back on. That teleportation thing sounds pretty damn good...

Loudly inquire of another nearby employee if there's a notary or bank officer around that could assist you in finalizing the founding of an enterprise, you've heard this place has some involvement in the running of joint-stock companies and it'd be a fine thing to bring them your business, is someone available to lend a hand?

You've a variety of details to arrange, and will be sending off the first party no later than midday tomorrow. In the meantime, you have planning to do and his input on the logistics wouldn't be bad, or if he wants to do some surveying at the given location, you'll give him an advance for gear and send him off at his leisure - he can go after the forms are signed. If he's looking to move his family into a mining town, they can be along as soon as he sets up acceptable living quarters for them.

You expect to be striking earth with proper machinery in no more than a fortnight. Fabrication of a proper camp needs to be completed between then and now.

Then, we could try to use the Oculus to remotely keep an eye on them, unless its telepathic abilities have a limited range.

We should teach Jim how to hide himself and watch for foes, quietly and without attracting anyone's attention. We'll do that right after we finish our business at the bank. As for John and Foran, I suppose we could increase their bodyguarding skills in a bit, sure. However, there might be some sort of drawback to extensive use of the Oculus on people - it has a malevolent will of its own and the long-term effects may be quite problematic. You could build something better in time, I expect. The situation isn't exactly life and death.

Thank the gnome. Ask about the fee to underwrite a joint-stock company, if they do that. Pack away your, what, 75ish pounds of gold, or buy a small strongbox if its available. Alright.

We could draw up a charter, have it notarized or whatever the local equivalent is, and stick it into a house of record. Being accepted as a mage-knight or whatnot would be pretty helpful here, it gives you something like a noble's station and privilege which allows for these sorts of enterprises.

The company will likely prosper well if it follows the structure of feudal enterprises lead by military nobles, meaning it lets people jump ranks in exchange for their involvement. Thus, joint-stock - the noble (you, the fake mage-knight) provides the cash, materials, and some of the expertise, and the workers, administrators, and foremen provide their own expertise and labor. Labor is as much stock as the implements used to do the job - you can't swing a pick without manpower. Therefore, it should be rewarded at some rate with company stock, which can be traded or managed for money and (probably) social status.

Thus, a worker at the company could elevate himself from a simple freedman to a middle-class man if he worked at your claimsites, and his interest in doing a good job would only grow with his stock.

You also pay these people a real wage, weekly. Whatever's reasonable.

    Sound sane?

Sounds good. Let's get working on it.

Inevitably, the criminal element will attempt to impede our way.
For when that time comes, we should make sure that the Oculus is repaired, and then use it's mind control powers to reform Ms. Blackheart.

We don't REALLY need a house right now, the inn will do.

You spend the better part of two hours working through the paperwork. It's obvious that it's designed to make those who own the companies lose out and the Vardan government get more than their fair share.
You're easily intelligent enough to get around that. And also intelligent enough to make it work in your favor. After finishing up in Licenses and Contracts, and asking about that elf mage, you head on over to Property and Resources Management. Their paperwork is even more labyrinthine, but once again you manage to come out on top.

You now own roughly 40 square miles of land, for the price of 120 gold. Most of the good mineral deposits are in the area you purchased.

You explain the nature of your business, and cite the figures of the massive amounts of iron buried on your property. He sits and listens, only asking the occasional question, which you explain briefly and concisely. You finish up.

"Yes. That's all interesting, and I'm sure the Navy will LOVE having you supplying them. But quite frankly, I couldn't give less of a shit. I'm more interested in you personally."

    He pauses.

"Unlike most of the fools you'll meet, I think you'll discover I'm hard to fool. I know you're not a Mage-Knight, but I don't give a shit about that either. No. It's the fact that you're taking on Blackwater that interests me. I know her people have been looking for you. And I know you've begun turning her own people against her. The gnomish banker? One of my people picked her up. She's the one who told Anna about you. Her people are already at the Smoking Dwarf. They're posing as guards. When your friend Jim shows up, they plan to ambush him and his friends."

He smokes his cigar some more.

"So. Here's the deal. NID wants Anna Blackwater's head on a platter, or at least in a prison cell. You get her for me, and we'll discuss that iron contract. Maybe we'll even give you more than the normal rates. Who knows."

    "We have an agreement?"

Apply Old Imperial procedural guidelines and hammer out an agreement that gives you some sort of chance of surviving this mess with NID protection.

Try to establish a more permanent contract. For example, you'd need information on Blackheart/Blackwater/whatever her name is now, and you'd like information on the Mage-Knights. And potentially NID protection in future.

This ain't our first rodeo, as they say. Naval Intelligence motherfucker's not the only one with experience around here.

You talk for a ten minutes, shoot comments back and forth. Slowly you gain ground, and he offers you access to some the NID's files. You can't take them with you, but you can read them. He also offers you a small sum for services rendered. 400 gold and an interesting magical device.

You believe this is the best offer you can get, so you agree. He tells you to follow him, and the animal pulls out a book from a bookcase to your left and inserts a key into a keyhole.

The bookcase slides down into the floor, revealing a hidden platform. Stepping on it, the platform begins to lower. After approximately 30 feet, it comes to a stop. The animal has taken you to an underground library. No other animals are here.

He tells you you have one hour to look up what you need, and walks towards a metal crate. Removing the lock with another key, the biped pulls out something you recognize: A wand of Freezing Cone.

    Seconded.

We better head to the Smoking Dwarf. Time Anna learned she's in a fight with a robot... And robots don't stop coming until their target is dead.

    So the itinerary:
    -Clean Smoking Dwarf. Rescue allies.
    -Tune up.
    -Crash party. Smash Blackbitch.

    Well, well.

Get everything relevant on Blackheart, mamorize it. Then do the same on the Mage-Knights. We'll digest later.

Whatever time you have left over after that, devote to sorting out what you can understand of history, political structures, various power groups, and so forth.

Go at it like the machine you are.

More or less, yeah, except you need to meet with Jim and the boys after the smoking dwarf's clean, you might have time to get a mercenary contract ironed out first, and you need to visit Sloane during your tune-up attempt.

Oh, and the 'guards' at the smoking dwarf might be 'handled' with a bit of sleeping-powder in their ale. The innkeeper doesn't like Anna's mooks, does he? Have a chat with him, and then buy the house a round.

The one handed man leaves, taking the lift back up, and leaves you to it. Even if he knows you're not a Mage-Knight, he probably hasn't figured out your artificial nature yet. Good.

Over the course of fourty five minutes, you rapidly read through all the books in the library, your mind getting a true workout trying to keep up. You finish with fifteen minutes to spare, and feel slightly... what was the word? Perhaps there was no word. You felt odd.

Replacing all the books for the next fifteen minutes, you call the lift down with a lever, and return to ground level.

You feel slightly better as the lift pulls to a stop.

    "Got everything you need?"

    He hands you a vial.

"Ah. I see what you're doing. I'll send some of my boys over in an hour to pick them up. Report back once Blackheart's take care of."

You leave his office, passing three people in black clothing on the way out. Their faces are hidden in shadow, but your enhanced vision manages to capture an image of them nonetheless. The animals apparently hadn't heard of masks.

You head out through the lobby and into the street. To your right, you hear that same elf again. Arguing with a Gord Mercenary.

"God dammit, no! I PAYED YOU IN ADVANCE, and where were you when I needed you? NOWHERE."

"Oh, really? You payed me in advance, that's great. Then why did to note bounce?"

Alright, it's time to meet this elf before she gets offed. This is a potential ally here, we don't need Blackheart cutting her open from nose to tits. Step forward and say something knightly along the lines of "Madam, pardon me, but you're clearly agitated - and have been since this morning. I feel compelled to offer assistance, as I did at the city hall - but you left in haste, and I could not. What's the trouble?"

"So you're going after her? Figures. What does a Mage-Knight want with a smugger though?"

Oh, but she's much more than a smuggler.

"That she is. Hmm. If you're going after Blackheart, I want want to come along. See that bitch get what she deserves. Watch her face when she sees a Mage-Knight stomp down her front door."
