The air shafts become tighter and more claustrophobic as you progress deeper into the facility, plunging down into the heart of the structure - although despite the dark and forboding nature of your surroundings, you feel a strange sense of detachment from the peril of your situation. You're wholly focused on your destination, the caves beneath the structure that will allow you to escape the facility.

Every so often, your erstwhile passenger shifts its grip on the base of your spine, resituating itself for no clear reason. The alien construct seems to be taking a more active roll in overriding your panic response now that you're aware of its presence, suppressing the spike in heart rate and flood of epinephrine that ought to accompany it. The knowledge that it's back there manipulating you still manages to put your teeth on edge.

Somehow, you succeed in avoiding any more tyranid creatures, making substantial progress along your path. Your situational awareness seems to have improved significantly, an almost preternatural perception of your surroundings allowing you to move quickly through the lightless tunnels with only the wan glow of your pulse carbine to guide you.

    Roll 1d100.

Too late, you realize that the ductwork around you has become distressed with age and neglect, an ear-splitting shriek of shorn metal your only warning as the floor drops off behind you. The heavy conduit plunges three or four meters as you scrabble desperately for purchase before the front end of the segment snaps free as well, the entire assembly crashing through the facility's structure into the corridor below.

You're only dazed for as moment before the scarab at your back succeeds in rebalancing the chemical cocktail in your bloodstream, issuing a series of electrical pulses to your nervous system and prompting you to your hooves. Despite the fall, you seem to be well within your nominal operating parameters - uninjured.

As you scramble out of the collapsed duct, the red color-coding on the walls indicates that you're getting close to the secure laboratories at the bottom of the facility. Given their isolation, it's possible that the alien infestation hasn't reached the hot labs - you may find survivors there, other tau who could help you to escape.

If you double back, you should be able to find your way back to the maintenance access for this level and resume your course to the facility's air shaft, bypassing the labs completely in favor of a more expeditious route below.

The first consensus of three responses determines your action.

The clatter of your hooves against the deck plate seems to reverberate against the bulkheads, forcing you to strain against the noise if you want to detect any impending threats. Fortunately, the resounding, rapid-fire thud of gue'la weapon fire cuts through the din, met with the higher-pitched whine of heavy pulse cannons. You must be getting close. Up ahead, blue-white bursts of energy fly past an intersecting hall.

You press your back to the bulkhead, leaning cautiously around the corner to survey at the firefight. A formation of three enormous humans clad in blue armor are crouched behind cover, trading shots with an equally enormous defense drone. Unlike its smaller, antigravity-equipped counterparts, this construct towers over its assailants on three heavily plated, archnid-like legs, a pair of underslug energy weapons laying down a suppressing fire as the humans attempt to breach its shields. So far, neither party appears to have gained the upper hand, although it's only a matter of time before the humans - Astartes, the disembodied voice had called them - succeed in bringing it down.

As you clear the final corridor, you enter a long hall at the end of which are a number of collapsible barricades, mobile field projectors intended to provide hard cover for garrison forces. a clatter of rifles greets you as you step into the kill zone.

"Hold your fire!" the lead Fire Warrior declares. "Earth Caste, lay down your weapon an lie on the floor, hands over your head.

"Fail to comply and my men will open fire."

Your heart thunders in your chest, a palpable sense of fear enveloping you. You've been so long without it that it seems almost unfamiliar. The scarab is manipulating your physiology again to produce a sufficiently believable emotional response - or, rather, it's stopped doing so. "I'm n-not infected," you stammer, throwing your carbine aside and sinking to your knees. "we were testing a new cybernetic device when containment was breached. I came here for safety!"

The Shas'ui gestures one of his men forward to take you into custody, the Fire Warrior seizing you roughly by the arm and hauling you to your hooves. As you're presented to the fire team leader, he draws his blade slits the belly of your jumpsuit open. Without the mitigating influence of the scarab, you instinctively recoil, but the Fire Warrior holds you fast.

Pulling the fabric of your clothes aside, the Shas'ui inspects you for the telltale puncture wound of implantation. The expressionless faceplate of his helmet doesn't give any sign but he seems to be satisfied, sheathing his blade and returns his attention to your escort.

"Take her to decontamination," he instructs, no longer really concerned with you. "Let Mu'roh decide what to do with her, then get back here on the double."

"For the Greater Good, Shas'ui," the Fire Warrior replies, bowing his head before hauling you past the barricades.

The Fire Warrior is rough with you, keeping you off-balance with a brisk pace and the vice-like grip he's holding on your remaining arm. Although you're once again able to experience fear, the calculations in the back of your mind remain - you could kill him in .08 seconds, although your long-term chances of survival are significantly reduced. For some reason, the callousness of the math doesn't signify in the same way as you would expect. They're simply probabilities, not lives.

An airlock ahead cycles to admit you and your escort roughly heaves you in, causing you to stumble a few feet as he trains his rifle on you. The blast door closes between you and a soothing, feminine voice announces, "decontamination in progress. Please remain still and wait for this lock to clear."

"The gue'la are old and tired," he continues, rapping his cane on the floor to summon a holographic projection from the lens at its apex, a sprawling map of this spiral arm of the galaxy. The Empire, a twinkling constellation of amber against the angry red of gue'la space - and the encroaching tendrils of a beast from beyond the galaxy. "But they serve a purpose; an ignorant bulwark against these intergalactic predators, buying us the time we need to better understand them.

"Cellular regeneration, biotic engineering, transgenic grafting, psychic phenomenon... we have learned quite a bit from these locusts the gue'la call tyranids."

As you lock the restroom door behind you and begin to disrobe, you're left to ponder your current predicament. The knowledge that the alien scarab is continuing to subvert your body, combined with the fact that it has clearly been influencing your behavior since the beginning sets you on edge and although it has saved your life, you may now have a chance to be rid of it thanks to Mu'roh's research.

Incapable of an emotional appeal, the scarab simply crunches the numbers, presenting you with a series of probabilities - not the least of which is your violent death during removal, adverse reaction to the regenerative and/or possible contamination by tyranid genetic material.

Whatever your decision, it cannot be made rashly and the consequences will be unavoidable. Drone Quest will continue.

The problem is that I'm a horrible artist

the thing that bugs me most is that none of these images are anatomically correct for the castes they represent

people drawing fire caste women always draw them very slender instead of well muscled. The fire caste is a warrior class in the tau society, their members would be well defined but you rarely see any discernible muscles (because that isn't attractive.)

Now that it has come to earth caste tau people are drawing them as tall and slender which is the opposite of what they really are.

Honestly I wouldn't care if they were supposed to be water caste but they aren't. This is just fetish fuel which i guess you can expect from the internet.

but don't worry about using fire caste symbols. Typically the tau use the fire caste symbol to represent their empire (I would expect it to be even more so considering this likely takes place in a military/science outpost) so using a generic fire caste symbol isn't going to make anybody think that there are fluff inconsistencies.

    >The fact he is a conniving bastard who hides his schemes to rule the world by controlling the humans and convincing them to go fight the Necrons head on, which I will note FAILED.

but the thing is that necron lords were the most fanatical when it came to worship of the c'tan that is the reason why they were given the greatest and most durable bodies of the necrons.... One of the turning from the c'tan is like the pope denying the existence of god.

    it wont happen

the fact that he tries to lead the imperium to battle the necrons just makes him even more of a mary sue whether it succeeded or not.

deal with it he is a mary sue whether you like the idea or not.

I think The sap meant That the Necron was insane to the point where his ideals were changed.

ALSO sounds like a Homebrew verison of either rogue trader or dark heresy gone bad. With a bad DM/GM

I don't mind that Xeno and Sar'a don't look like dwarfs. They don't have to be the laborer-looking Earth Caste, they're clearly scientist and engineer-types. It makes sense that their physiques would be less heavily developed.

It's also pretty well established that Xeno was short, I don't know if it ever came up in connection with Sar'a though.

So now, what's the plan? Are we hoping to escape with the rest of the Tau?
What about Anima- she said she could help us.....

I guess that Anima might pop-up again when shit's getting real for the scarab. Perhaps we could this time try communicating with the scarab to ask it about its origins.

And escaping with the other tau is not a good idea if we don't want our little secret discovered and other mad scientists to ruin us. I don't remember about Anima's behaviour, but wasn't she somewhat friendly with Xeno?

I think she just wanted Drone. Sar'a is just a Drone delivery vehicle.
