With the midday sun behind you, the tower overlooking this particular crossing seems almost like a jeweled scepter, wating to be plucked. There is motion inside the tower, some 200 men, so terrified by the comparatively massive force gathered before their meager hold that they seem to have forgotten to light their signal fire. Not that you expect them to continue in that mistake for too much longer... but it should be enough for you. "What are our orders, sir?" Gaius asks as he walks up from behind you.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 01/15/11(Sat)13:52 No.13531270
Target all siege engines on the signal fire room.
If we can prevent their ability to signal for reinforcements, we might be able to force them to surrender.
They must know that they can't hold out without reinforcements.

"Set up the Heavy Repeaters, try to take out the signal room. Perhaps we will be able to take this tower without a battle, provided these men have some sense." you order, hoping for a quick conquest.

Gaius nods, before turning to shout "You heard theCommander! Now set up those repeaters before those uurlanthi dogs remember to send for help!!" As the men stir into action, he turns back to you, and asks "And what do you intend to do with the soldiers if they surrender, commander? we cant carry prisoners with us with our current mission."

We can't take them with us, and it would still take a few days for the main force to arrive.

One plan I have, is that we disarm the prisoners, mark them in some way, and then release them.
Otherwise, we'd need to occupy Lost Conflux and turn it into a POW camp.

I'm hoping for more discussion on what plan to use for the prisoners.

Sherman's army did take prisoners and forced them to march alongside the soldiers during his March to the Sea.
The problem with our force, however, is that we move much faster (due to our auto-wagons), and so we couldn't take them with us unless we constructed special POW auto-wagons.

The problem with turning Lost Conflux into a POW camp is that there's still most of a week left before the Degnarian Hammer falls on Uurlanth, and we can't afford to be in one place for so long. To do so would invite a counterattack.

Actually, Pax, how big were the dungeons of the Lord's Manor in Lost Conflux?
An idea I had was to lock up all the prisoners in the dungeon, with a timer on the lock to release them in several days.
They'll be given enough rations and water to last that long.
In case the main force overruns Lost Conflux, orders will be posted informing them of the POWs.

The city will be emptied of anything of military value, so the prisoners can't rearm themselves.

Don't think I'll participate anyway. I'm not tactically inclined and it seems there are more than enough people here and arguments can span for hours. No need for another voice.

Motion to not worry about what we'll do with surrendering soldiers until after they actually surrender, and just launch the attack for now. My own inclination would be to take all their shit and then do whatever we're doing with all the people at Lost Conflux with them.
    >> Generic 01/15/11(Sat)15:19 No.13532000
What forces did we bring with us to this tower?

Siege engines should target the signal fire's location, then start taking out the corners low to the ground. If we can collapse it before they completely empty, all the better.

I'd agree with locking them up at Lost Conflux after we take their gear. Or hell, just let them know their homes will be burnt down and we're giving them the chance to get the families away from the villages. At this point, no matter what we do, people will find out we're here. As long as we make them well aware that if they face us on the battlefield again, we will not be so merciful, we might be able to keep them off it again. If not... It's just another unit of levies for us to butcher.

And yeah, having this start at 12 on Saturday was very bad for my schedule, heh. Since this is normally Friday/Sunday, I leave saturday as my day to do things day. Can't even stay very long after this.

As for prisoners, all we have to do is ensure they don't take up arms against us for a while and that they don't spread word of our arrival any faster than it would spread anyway. Which means delaying news of this tower falling for about 24 hours, ideally.

We will be burning every settlement we come across so to minimize the casualty count on your side as well as possibly starving our army of supplies, I suggest you leave now."

"If they surrender, we take their weapons, mark them, and let them see to their families... and warn them that when we next encounter them we will not be so magnanimous" you reply, as the Heavy repeaters are set down behind you.

Within a few seconds a hail of ballista bolts rains down upon the tower before you. After the first few seconds the signal room explodes in a shower of splinters, fire, and a few body parts. The barrage continues for a few seconds longer, then a white flag drops from the ruined precipice of the tower, you raise a clenched fist to cease the barrage. No one leaves the tower however. "Do you think they hope to kill whoever goes to accept their surrender?" Cornelius asks, striding up next to Gauis and yourself.

About fifteen minutes later a small group of frightened looking soldiers make their way to your tent behind their flag. "What do you want of us?" the least frightened of the group asks you.

"For you to throw down your arms, allow my men to mark you, then return to your homes unharmed and unarmored." you reply bluntly.

"Then die as traitors and deserters? and what guarantee do we have that you wont use the force you have brought here to kill us once we leave our tower?" the old soldier asks, warily.

"I would _strongly_ recommend that you change their minds, though if they will not surrender I will be forced to deal with them, and my ire towards your slaver of a lord could very easily be re-directed upon them" you reply, ice in your voice. "In half of an hour I will destroy the tower regardless of who or what may still be inside." you add. a silence hangs over the tent for a few moments, before the men make a hast retreat to the tower. Over the next half-hour roughly 160 soldiers walk past your detachment unarmed and unarmored, most of them have gone so far as to leave their emerald and gold doublets with their weapons and armor. "Commander, how do you wish to deal with the last of them?" Cornelius asks as the last of the surrendering troops leave from where your men were marking them. Strange, the old man you spoke with seems to have kept to his post.

The chances of them attempting to start a fire is very high.

Every 4/5th soldier should be carrying a container of sand or water to put out fires.

Use stonesense to get an idea of where the soldiers are when they're assualting the gate. Then relay that info quickly to our men to end this as quickly as possible.

Commit 200 men to the assault. Probably our legionary unit. Too many will get in each other's way and increase casualties. All others should be guarding, strip-searching the captives for weapons and such. Cavalry wings should spread out to watch for incoming enemy units.

I'd like to try to capture alive the old man but if we can't, Justinian will understand.

Sighing you chop your hand, signaling for the barrage to begin again. You start to focus, so that you can bring the tower down as quickly as possible with your elementalism... but your respect for the men manages to distract you, slowing the process down greatly. To their credit the men do not flee, and three hours after you began, as small tongues of flame start to flick out from the top of the tower, it collapses, killing the men inside and smothering the flame. "Make sure each of these men gets an individual grave" you instruct your captains. Less than an hour later it is done.

Anyway, we first need to see if the nomads are willing to act as scouts and split up.
If they are, then we begin the march.

    Perhaps.
But resolving a fight in our favor without combat means no losses amongst our own units. I don't want to waste lives if we can avoid it (if the men understand and believe that we would not have them fight unless it was absolutely critical, then they will fight all the harder when they do, under the impression that victory MUST be achieved).

There shouldn't be any enemy units in the field in this area since we smashed the lord's main holding and at least two, possibly all three of his military strongholds. I would consider encountering a sizable enemy force a low-probability scenario. Your point is taken, however; I do want to get regrouped as fast as possible, it's just that we can't afford to NOT raid this place if we're looking to maximize damage.

You call the Vohzd over to you "Vohzd Lennis, I have a mission for ten of your swiftest, subtlest riders. I need to know if Lord Blentus' last tower still stands, and I need to know the disposition of the town north of us."

The nomad leader nods, before barking out orders for a group of his men, calling each by name "My riders will return well before we begin our assault." he promises you. The riders headed to the town return first, claiming the town is small, two towers half the size of the one you just toppled, both facing west. the town is surrounded by a low pallisade wall, no taller than 10 feet, with no space to walk on. The garrison is no more than 200 city guards, iron-tipped shortspears, leather armor or quilted doublets, and poorly kept wooden shields. The riders grin as they give you the information, the town is run by a merchant, though a caravan left a few days prior to your crossing the greyrun. A few hours later the other riders return, informing you that the torches approaching the tower give them reason to believe that it will not be standing in the morning. It is just past duck, and you will be able to see this particular village in about an hour.

What time is duck? I'm not familiar with Quackenese. :D

So we marched with the prisoners? Then we leave behind a blocking force of 100 legionaries to guard the prisoners while we charge in.

Our standard tactics. Use our powers to blow holes in the walls, charge right through.

Our riders should be a mobile reserve to make sure that we don't get outflanked.

Should we use fire arrows? We'll give away our position and we can always torch the town once we win.

It appears that the second tower will be taken care of without our assistance.

I think we should attempt an attack against the town from the East, preventing them from using their towers to their full effect.
We create a breach in the palisade wall with heavy repeaters and our elementalism, then storm in with legionnaires flanked by cavalry.

Tunnels are not a good thing. We have to hold them up with elementalism; if something distracts us or we lose focus the whole thing could collapse on our troops.

It's not necessary here anyway; this is just a palisade. We can likely just blast open a hole for entry.

It doesn't take you long to focus your elementalism enough to drop a sizable portion of the wall down. Swiftly and silently your force advances into the city, everything seems to be going according to your plan... until one of the windows above the 196th opens up, and some old woman dumping a chamber pot sees the large Degnarian force silently running through the city, screaming loudly before a quick shot from the scouts silences her. The damage is done however, a few windows open, more shouts and screams, torches are thrust from the darkness of sleeping homes. By the time your force is well inside the city the towns bell starts ringing, as your forces begin to split apart to deal with the towers and guards, two small groups of sleepy guards can be seen rushing down the main thoroughfares, looking frightened and tired. Dammit.
