    /tg/ loves this, right?

I have a question regarding favours. Are favours bound to the length of a pledge and do they take a vow slot up?
My group has so far handled favours kind of like a currency, on my suggestion, since I am a sociamancer, i.e. you make a pledge with your boon being a favour, you do your part and receive a favour, which you can use in a future pledge with the same person, possibly restricted by the wording of the original contract.
Between those two pledges, the favour does not count to the maximum number pledges.
I'd be grateful, if somebody could shed some light on this.

    Other than that, Changeling general.

What is the general opinion on the Dawn/Dusk courts?
I think they are pretty cool, but think they might be a bit off the core changeling theme.
    >> Weasel 01/07/11(Fri)19:59 No.13435246
Dunno 'em. Are they from a splatbook, or are they houseruled?
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)20:00 No.13435260
I like the dawn court's move forward theme, and the dusk court has cool heraldry, but other than that i'm pretty neutral on them.
    >> Deathleaper's Fangirl !!YD/t8+iuFvd 01/07/11(Fri)20:02 No.13435278
I'm not a huge fan of the alternate Court systems in general. They're interesting counterparts to the Seasonal courts, but I'm just not sure they tie into the core themes quite so well. Dusk and Dawn are the exception as they're both transitional states, from day to night and back again, so they're pretty thematic. But compared to the Seasonals, they always felt a little restrictive.

Spring Court is best Court, as far as I'm concerned.
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)20:03 No.13435289
They are from "Dancers in the Dusk" and "Swords at Dawn"
To sum them up, they don't really believe in hiding like the seasonal courts do, but rather wish to actively fight back. The dusk court is a court of fatalists, believing that they cannot win, and might as well go out with a bang, hurting the Fae as much as they can. The Dawn believes that they can win, but not as they are, and so they try to bring widespread changes to the lost society, which of course draws a lot of hate from non-dawns, since change inflicts lots of clarity damage.
    >> Weasel 01/07/11(Fri)20:07 No.13435353
I prefer Courtless with Court Goodwill sprinkled all over.
Friends everywhere, and deniability ensures there's always work to do.
Borrow toys from Winter to crack heads with Summer, so on and so forth.

Not that a good concept wouldn't be worth walking a different route.
    >> Weasel 01/07/11(Fri)20:10 No.13435380
I think they make logical, and possibly interesting, factions. I wouldn't want them as Courts, per se.

Yea. They'd make interesting subdivisions/internal philosophies within a Freehold, but as a Courts themselves they seem kinda limited.

Another question regarding pledges, do boons from different pledges stack? I started with 1 dot of resources, got a 2 dot boon out of one pledge and a 3 dot boon out of another, put both into resources. Do I really have resources 5 for a week now, or did I overlook some rule?
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)20:14 No.13435423
Honestly, OP, the pledge system gets a bit murky and confusing in parts but my understanding is exactly like yours so I'm going to advise you to keep on keepin' on. This is also why I don't play the favour/pledge game often. It can be a bit too much at times. but if this isn't the case, then just houserule it as such. It's not like you're the first (or last) to make a Changeling houserule.

I'm currently in a game where I play an Ogre Cyclopean/Artist who works as a tattoo artist.

Yeah, I will talk to my GM about founding it as a rule, because currently it's pending.
I'm playing a social character - within three sessions I got three medial to big favours.
    >> Deathleaper's Fangirl !!YD/t8+iuFvd 01/07/11(Fri)20:18 No.13435463
They do, yes, though the exact methods and philosophies will vary depending on the current King or Queen of Summer. Some will advocate an aggressive defense, systematically hunting down and killing Fetches, Privateers, and Loyalists who enter the Freehold's domain but otherwise staying back, while others will deliberately go out into the Hedge and try to hunt down anything there they think might be a threat. Or then you've got the real crazies who actually want to try and siege Arcadia.
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)20:21 No.13435490
I'd say they are only courts in the way that they pledged themselves to the concept of dawn/dusk, like the seasonal courts to the seasons.
They are really, really unpopular, the Dusk because they are kind of crazy and the Dawn because they are kind of douches.

Yeah I think those rules could've done with some editing.
In cases like this I feel like they ought not stack, because it'd be all too easy to just pile points into something and abuse it.
Of course, then the ST can get into the pledges striking back - Faerie rules aren't necessarily going to accept being bent or broken lying down. Which I like, because it's simultaneously true to the setting, and clamps down on asshattery right quick.

Winter can be cool, but I find at times they can seem a little too passive - too willing to hide in mortality rather than get involved with the game. They work better when given a secret police/inquisition slant - their paranoia means that they constantly watch for potential dangers to the Freehold from without and within - resulting in the occasional Changeling suddenly vanishing in the night if his Clarity drops too low, or he ensorcells too many Mortals, or he's exulting in her Fae-born magic too much, or does something else that makes Winter feel he's at risk of attracting the Gentry's attention.

Dunno, first I've heard of it, I'm afraid.

Does she have any lovers, a partner, or ensorcelled Mortals in her service?

Steal them from her. Seduce them, bewitch them, get them to switch alliances or even Courts for you. It plays to your character's strengths, won't really destabilise the Freehold's politics, but is sufficiently nasty - as you're taking away part of the new life she's built for herself - to remind her you're not to be messed with. After all, if you can turn those minds, you can turn allies against her and try to have her moved out of her Throne.
    >> Anonymous 01/07/11(Fri)20:46 No.13435748
just my opinion on it, favours are completely different from pledges. A pledge is a binding contract sort of thing, a favour that you either give or receive is just that, kind of a "hey buddy can you help me real quick and either we are square or I will owe you" kind of thing.

    You could play him as a Beast - he doesn't wear a raven-like mask, he's got a Raven's head.

I think there's an Elemental kith that ties into poison and polution.

Fluff would be a blood-thirsty fae that got bored with all the actual dancing and thrusting of real sword and knife-play... until she realized she could make the sword play a play about swords, turning the dancing of feet to just dancing, the thrusting into pelvic thrusting and etc.

It took her a while to figure out how to actually get the blood to drip in perfect rhythm and the screams to be in perfect pitch, but she got it.

And way I figure it, I don't have to be the most uber fighter if the entire fight is a script that I am writing, the enemies dancers dancing to my tune, and their ends justified by my meanstreak.

My character was the only one whose lungs were above the water line, so was the only one that didn't have the air in said lungs suddenly turn to water while asleep? Then decided to GTFO because I didn't want to become fish food for the weird things the fae kept in her pond, like fish that have mouths instead of gills so they bite you and then bite you while they are still biting you.

I don't like them, for a few small reasons. Firstly, they don't make sense as defense mechanisms. Every other court is some way of defending against the fae while the dusk and dawn courts are more philosophies of life.

    Rapevictim: The Showering
You are a once regular human, abducted by Fair Folk, think old folklore, when they didn't have wings and were basically Cthulhu.
You escaped from the captivity, only to realize, that your stay in their realm has permanently altered you and a puppet has taken your place - nobody even noticed you were gone.
Now you live with others of your kind, in constant fear of the Fair Folk to come back for you.

    Shenanigans happen.

Changeling: The Lost. It's an expansion for the new World of Darkness.

The gist of it? You're a human. Or you were, until you were kidnapped by a Faerie, who took you away to his Kingdom and enslaved you. Maybe he put you to work, or he made you stand in one place as a bit of living art. Or turned you into a tree. Or used you as a hunting dog. Or threw you into a pit of murky shadows just to watch you scream.

Either way, you changed. You made pacts and promises to survive, and as you soaked up the unearthly magic, your body and mind twisted into something halfway between a human and a Faerie. And then, you escaped, somehow. You broke away from your master and fled back to earth, only to find you've not been missed. Because your captor left a duplicate in your place that's been living your life for you. And it doesn't want to give up on it's adopted family.

Do you try and reclaim your old life, or hook up with other escapees and start a new one? Either way, the Fae left their mark - you're a little bit mad, and you don't see the world in quite the same way any more.

It's a wonderful game and I deeply encourage you to look into it more.

And on that note, time for me to vanish. Laters, all!

    >What is this?

New World of Darkness, Changeling the Lost. You play a person who was stolen away from this world into Arcadia by the Faeries. Don't imagine Tinkerbell and pixies, though. These Faeries are more like horrors of nightmare and legend, the darkness that's only hinted at in the sanitized stories we get today.

So you were kidnapped to their world. Or maybe enticed with wonders and magic. Or seduced. Or simply dragged screaming through the Thorns that separate us from them. And there you were put through a Durance. An ordeal...different for everyone, depending on why you were taken. Because of this, during your time in Arcadia, you're changed. And when you finally, somehow, escape back to this world...

You're no longer quite human. You're partly fae and don't have a place in this world. Except you refuse to go back.

So, how hard will I troll the other players if I convince the ST to let me take one of those Mages that have their Watchtower in Arcadia?

I'd figure changelings would love them as mages are the only people that can troll the shit out of the True Fae and the latter can't do shit about it.

You would troll them hard, because mages are the strongest playable supers.

Also, yes. Manikins are mutated into artificial-looking seemings. Like living dolls or robots.

I'll give a brief synopsis of this travesty of a character. I knew this game was going to be a disaster before it even got off the fucking ground. I had only two players at the time, close friends for years. One of them constructed a...somewhat plain, yet workable badass Changeling that was trying to get his life back on track.

The other character, well...that was a different story.

The day started like any other. I was excited for what character this guy had cooked up, as he had finally begun to mature in the character creation process. After our last D&D campaign, in which he had actually made a mature character, well, I had high hopes, since he was such a great roleplayer. When he handed me his backstory for Esther, however, I began to deflate, and my face gradually became that of pic related.

Esther is a girl that was raised in an orphanage in Russia, in which she was violently abused due to her countless disabilities. I started to wince as I began to realize that he had given his characters seven syndromes. One that stood out was the fact that she SHIT herself. Another, less disturbing one was that she bit herself, and as such, she constantly kept a mouthguard on her. I didn't probe him for questions about the other syndromes.

The character was simply abducted by a Fae one day, and kept in a realm where she was doted on. This Fae realized that Esther had a potential for painting, and she allowed her to paint to her heart's content. Esther was happy here, and she concealed her symptoms from her adoptive Fae mother. Eventually, on Esther's twelfth birthday, Esther's player felt it was important that I know that her Fae "mother" gave her pullup diapers. I'm sure I was supposed to feel, uh, touched? Yeah.

Well, after this affair, the next big event in Esther's life is that her "mother" started adopting children! Not just any children, black children! The black children apparently abused Esther, and this explains her racism later in life. The best part? Guess what the skin color of the other player's character is?

    >Is this the character that is a loyalist, shits herself, and put all her points in to useless shit? because i saw that one on a rate my character thread and laughed.
I'm pretty sure the player of that character browses /tg/, so it's very possible he came here searching for validation, unless somebody saw me telling the tale and simply pretended to be him?

Now, the backstory continued with a fuckload of other meaningless shit that I will not bore you with. I'll get to the end of this gripping backstory, that is clearly creating a character that will work well in a group and contribute properly.

Now, as the girl was growing older, her Fae "mother" would tell her that she must leave for the mortal world, as she felt something for her that she was not supposed to feel: love. Yes folks, a terrifying sociopathic alien entity from beyond the scope reality itself felt love for this poor girl, and sent her on her way, just like that.

Beyond all this, if you have ever seen the Orphan? Yeah, this character is "based" off of the fucked up little womanchild that can be seen in the film.

Now, I decided I would roll with it. "Okay," I reasoned, "This guy hasn't made any characters that are TOO terrible in the past, right? I should be fine, right?" WRONG. SO TERRIBLY, TERRIBLY, TERRIBLY WRONG. The game was awkward and frustrating for both me and the other player, and Esther's player had absolutely no problem with any of this. But first, on to the stats...

Sorry about all the "Now"s that I started my sentences with there, folks. I must really be out of it today.

Esther was a character whose only beneficial trait was her artistry. She was a wizened fae that could do little to nothing relevant to anything. The player told me that they, essentially, didn't care about being relevant in combat, and they only wanted the stats they had "for story purposes." I can get behind gimping your character a LITTLE bit in certain areas? But making them a total reject in every area but artistry? ARTISTRY, in a ROLE-PLAYING GAME? Sure, you might be able to get a paycheck, but...you won't be getting much else.

Well, with that little tidbit about Esther's character sheet, on to a little synopsis of the two sessions that this game actually saw before I forbade the utterance of the term "Changeling" at our game table.

Session One (We'll focus on the rageworthy bits for your convenience)

Esther's player hasn't finished describing how his character looks! Oh no! He asks if Wizened are able to have dog tails. I told him I didn't think so, and he got unbelievably pissed. He yelled "NO, I'M PRETTY DAMN SURE THEY CAN HAVE TAILS." Sullenly, he flipped through the Changeling book hunting for the proof he needed. Finally, he pointed it out, said "There you fucking idiot, now I can have a dog tail," and he THREW the Changeling book to the ground. I think I hit him for doing something so disrespectful, but I don't remember.

Through Esther's unwillingness to carry out any problem solving skills, she wound up at a hospital near the start of the campaign. Fortunately, this worked as a plot startup point! The other player was a Changeling, one that knew other Changeling! Being a good person and always looking for more allies, the player took the severely injured girl to a nearby hospital, waiting for her to recover from the other room.

From there, things just went downhill...

Son of a bitch, I just F5'd. You bitches are getting a bullet-note version of this shit.
    Session Two
-Black character (Mr. G) waits for Esther to wake up.
-Mr. G goes to explain the current situation to Esther and she just makes noises and asks for him to leave
-Mr. G reasons that she would be safer with him, since he is going to a place for recently crossed over Changeling, over in Jersey City
-Despite his logic of her having no food, clothing, money or shelter, she refuses and lays in the bed of the hospital.
-Esther just lies in the hospital while Mr. G goes to settle a gang dispute with another Changeling in New York, which is why he was there in the first place.
-Esther tries to talk with the people there. She tries to use Oneiromancy on a crazed Vietnam War veteran. The guy starts freaking out, Esther seems to look distressed, her player leans over the table and rolls a d10. We look at each other confusedly. Esther's player says "I shit myself."
    >our faces when she says this

I called it somewhere around there. It's all one terrible blur to me, and I don't like to recall it too often, though every once and a while, I like to remind myself of just how terrible and awkward it was for my friend and I to play with him in that campaign.

Should I go on to talk about the conversation Esther's player and I had online the night following this session?

So, I finally laid down the law after that abortion of a session. I went online and decided I would chat the fucker up, and ask him what the fuck he thought he was doing.

I basically told him that I wanted him to make a new character, and that he was clearly piling defects onto a character in order to make something that he thinks is "interesting." I received some hilarious responses when I criticized him.

Now, for his character sheet, his argument was the one that so many gimping roleplayers just LOVE. It was something like "OH MY GOD DO YOU HATE ROLEPLAYING OR SOMETHING? HOW COULD YOU EVEN SUGGEST MY CHARACTER SHEET IS POORLY STATTED?" He used all the same old, contrived arguments when explaining all the flaws he piled on his character, though he did have two strawman arguments that I was astounded by.

The first strawman argument was "YOU ARE IGNORANT FOR WANTING TO BAN A CHARACTER WITH DISABILITIES. DOESN'T IT JUST SHOW THAT YOU'RE INTOLERANT?" Do I really need to explain the millions of holes in something this stupid, ladies and gentlemen?

The second strawman that came up actually made me laugh out loud. He told me "ISN'T CHANGELING SUPPOSED TO BE A DEEP GAME?" "Er, in some ways, "deeper" than our usual D&D I guess." "AND DON'T YOU WANT US TO MAKE DEEP CHARACTERS?" "Are you implying-" "MY CHARACTER IS DEEP. THAT IS WHY I GAVE HER THOSE SYNDROMES."

In the end, the player begged to the most level-headed player of our, at the time, three-person party, the guy that played Mr. G. He begged him, on the internet, to give me a chance. The reason I know this is because the player of Mr. G sent me a message saying "Lol hes begging me to ask you for a second chance for him." In the end, it just kind of fizzled out. Since he refused to make a new character or change her in any way, I told Esther's player. "NO. WE'RE GOING BACK TO D&D. YOU'VE PROVEN THAT YOU CAN'T HANDLE A GAME THAT DOESN'T FORCE YOU INTO MAKING A CHARACTER FROM A LISTED SET OF CHOICES."

Being a closet furfag myself and all... If you want to fag it out with a character with animal traits, you gotta show some restraint and style, and be non-sexual as fuck. And it better fucking be of the beast kith too. This shit makes me cringe and serves as a good warning on what might happen if the faggotry goes too far.

tbh I don't really think this has anything to do with being a furry.

my last group had a story about a past player who wore a diaper. it was because of some surgery and one day he ended up shitting in it and kept playing like he wasn't sitting in a pile of shit and everyone could smell it. they kicked him out.

The Adamantine Arrow actually says, that if an Arrow should find out about what happened to the changelings (as this is not common knowledge), they might try to fight the Fae (and likely end up impaled on a Fae Lord's thorny dick.)
