So, its been a number of hours since the last thread 404ed and Ive got a bit of writefagging done, hopefully now more in line with current design philosophy.

What is VeloCITY: VeloCITY is a game built on the RUSH system, it is a homebrew made by /tg/ with influences from Mirror's Edge, Jet Set Radio, Air Gear, Snow Crash, and other dystopian settings in which extreme sports Punks fight against The Man.

Hiei Krauser grabbed his bag as the bell ran and bolted for the door. 10 floors down and one shot was his only thought. His classmates milled about slowly as he was already out and slipping his 'Punk is Freedom' sweatshirt, bright orange, over his head as he hit his locker. He pressed his palm to it to be read and the lock popped open, he was taking a risk but he had to get out before they caught him. He pulled his board out and stepped upon it, glad for the HeadMusix implant hed gotten for his birthday as 3rd Gen GlitchHop thumped to life in his ears.

Someone called out for him to stop skating in the halls but he was already at the stairwell, Hiei ollied up onto the inner handrail and tailgrinded down to the landing, stopping himself from smashing into the wall barely only to push himself off and hop up to the next floor.

"9 floors to go." He muttered and caught the railing with a hand, vaulting himself up atop it again, gaining speed which made his hands hurt as he wrenched himself down flight after flight of stairs. 8, 7, 6, he passed the seniors floor without the stairway having become its crouded mass of pressed teenage bodies yet, people only beginning to reach the Well of Lost Souls as he was close, so close, 5...

He was mid jump when he saw the flash out of the right hand corner of his eye, someone was th-

"Hhhhnnnnnnnggggghhhh!" Hiei grunted out as the clothesline caught him right in the stomach. The frail boy folded over the snickering senior's arm as his skateboard rolled without him onto the fourth floor. Tears welled in his eyes as he couldn't breathe from having the air driven from his body so violently, gasping for breath from the pain he gave a sob as more hands grabbed to him and pinned him against the wall.

Those cruel grins looked down at him. "Well, well, well. It seems that our little guppie was trying to run away from us, doesn't that just make you sad Tony?" There was a wicked chuckle from Craig. They were cruel and unrelenting bullies, faces near identical masks of ground down homogeny. They hated him for being bright, a sore spot to their eyes and they couldn't stand him stepping out of their rigid lines of expected behavior.

"Real sad, maybe we should make him sad too?" Tony echoed in expected compliance.

"Heygetoffame!" Hiei struggled to get free. "It's gonna get crouded in here soon, lemme go fuz-lite!" He kicked inneffectively, the tears of helplessness still not leaving his eyes.

Craig shook his head in mock-sadness. "Indeed, he's not showing propper regret for trying to deprive us of his ~colorful~ presence." They used it like a jeer, an insult, he hated them.

Then, as if from on high, a voice appeared. "Aren't you boys supposed to be headed to sports practice? I'd hate to have to see you in detention again." The sea of hooligans parted for Mrs. Rhamadi. She stood in her trraditional khaki suit with black blouse, the red dot of her traditional hindu heritage standing out as a powerful spec of color as she walked over to Hiei with his board under one arm. She lookes about to the boys and arched a brow. "Well?"

The seniors shuffled and mumbled as they started to move off, leaving with an apt "Catch you later."

Hiei looked up to Mrs. Rhamadi. Taller than he by a fair margin, her roan skin smooth and flawless she smiled down at him with a near sad expression. Buxom and curvey she was a common target for schoolboy crushes, and while certainly he recognized she was beautiful Hiei did not understand why, just that she stood out brightly amongst the drab staff. "You should not let yourself be bullied so Mr. Krauser." She said in a lecturing tone. "And there is no skateboarding in the halls!" She held out his board to him in a kindly gesture.

The boy ducked his head and mumbled a mushed thanks-appology and wiped his eyes piteously as he took back the board and rushed down the last few flights of stairs on foot. He had a date with destiny, or so Dashell had claimed. He didn't look back as he ran from the 15 story high-school complex, ran from the dreary and depressing reality of schooling to the vibrant world his friends had recently dragged him into.

He never wanted to go back.

More like comma splices and punctuation errors. Stuff it, I'm not trying to edit this.

I should note my power got fucked because the primary transformer in the area BLEW UP.

I was forced to play trivial pursuit.
    From 1981.

Anyway, I can work on it again now- how much would you say before I need a playtest? I've got the meat and potatoes done, things I have due to add:

Equipment and general items to regulate currency

    Rules for standard competitions

Explaining Combat and different kinds of damage.

possibly general tricks but that seems secondary

I had a great laugh at this, rather curious as to what caused such a reaction.
    >> Anonymous 05/10/10(Mon)22:39 No.9741960
That was exceptionally dramatic, but this is the first time I've looked at one of these threads, and I see
    >His classmates milled about slowly as he was already out and slipping his 'Punk is Freedom' sweatshirt, bright orange, over his head as he hit his locker.
The classmates mill about slowly, suggesting the "slow unintelligent masses" concept held by most rebels, and the rebellion is immeadiately reinforced by the announcement of how fashionable his "Punk is Freedom" shirt is.

    >He pulled his board out and stepped upon it, glad for the HeadMusix implant hed gotten for his birthday as 3rd Gen GlitchHop thumped to life in his ears.
I admit, I recoiled at first from the sheer pointlessness of naming the brands and genre of music, but now in closer light I realize these are setting details... even if I still recoil a little.

    >Someone called out for him to stop skating in the halls but he was already at the stairwell, Hiei ollied up onto the inner handrail and tailgrinded down to the landing
Also, Hiei Krauser? Thats an absolutely horrific mishmash of ethnic naming. And specifying the kinds of tricks going down the handrail? I shudder again just bringing it to light.

So yeah. At a brief glance, it really feels like pretentious hipster/punk garbage.

It doesn't feel much better at a longer glance either.

Its certainly not my thing, and I'm sure someone will rage at me for this post, but you asked about my reaction.

AHAHAHAHAHAH I didn't know/recognize that fact. Thank you! Now I need to rename him.

I mean I -clearly- couldn't have been thinking of a medium-to-uncommon boy's name that also happens to be a mountain. It has to be from some stupid shonen crap. FML this ruins -everything- I wanted.

Well fuck the touching coming-of-age story about a spoiled brat of a punk setting about on the path to enlightenment and power...

No no no no, no rage. I am, in fact, quite glad you had such an on point, concise, and evaluated opinion on something I shat out as quickly as I could on the way to further plot development.

Now of course I was being incredibly blunt and slamming the overt themes down the readers throat in as unsubtle a fashion as I could as quickly as possible it came out quite inelegant.

And the ethnic mishmash is -supposed- to be there, I wanted people to be able to see waifish half-japanese boy instantly without thinking about it. I just wish I had named him Naoki instead of Hiei.

So, in summary, you are entirely right. It's punk trash and was meant to be.

    Yay for Velocity!

I also got a bit of writefaggotry done. Will post soon after I read through it. I wanted to try an give an example of aa 300 person, and hopefully that worked.

Equipment and Economy are the major things I think. Even if it's just the basics.

Maybe the general tricks, but I think that can be put off or figured out later after Alpha.
    >> Zhuren 05/10/10(Mon)23:06 No.9742504
More to the point, that was the point. I hadn't even -gotten- to the abusive alcoholic German father and the emotionally unavailable chronic victim Japanese mother. Oh trust me, the whole write up was choice. It appears, though, that just that much is enough to have someone's panties twist so I'll not continue on with the self-indulgent faggotry. Or maybe I will, later.

I agree, Economy and Equipment. I also think the combat write-up should be rules light for the time being and let playtesting make it into the robust system it needs to be.

Suddenly, writefaggotry of the worst kind!

The Big Nasty known as Gator was a big man. He dwarfed most of the other people in Velo city, an was nearly as wide as he was tall. He was muscled like an anchient ogre, with a disposition much the same. He was not the greatest punk in the city. Far from it. He was sloppy in many respects. He never truly got the hang of planting landings, and most of the time used his immense strength to muscle through the tricks needed to win competitions and build his reputation. He played dirty though. He understood how fear worked, and used it to his advantage. A suddenly drop, the proper face paint, the sudden hand on the shoulder, the unexpected trip. Gator knew how to shake up a punk and make him lose his rhythm. It was as close as the Balance would allow to killing your opponent.

Well, here's the big thing. Big Gator was not an idiot either. I heard he was one of the smartest bastards that has every come out of the Big Nasties. No, never underestimate them. They're capable of a brutal cunning, and Gator was much more then that. He was, however, arrogant. He believed himself invincible after several races against some of the weaker Spicers. Rather then actually try to figure out his limits though, Gator decided to go after bigger fish. Poor bastard thought that he could have handled one little chick in a race. Pity the bastard didn't understand what was gonna happen.

I followed the bastard into the uptown, surprisingly close to where the fuzz makes their headquarters. On the ground floor of one of the most gray buildings in the entire city was a surprisingly stylish little Asian place. You know, the ones that sell those big bowls filled with too much broth and not enough meat. Never been a fan of them myself, but Gator's target was. As luck would have it, she happened to be there. The Smiler.

I have to admit. She's tiny. I mean, I'm not the biggest guy. I look up to most people I meet and sometimes get blown away in strong breezes. But here I dwarfed her. She didn't even notice us walking in until the Gator sat down at her table and stared at her. This is the same stare that broke down most of his previous competition, or at least rattled by them slightly. She just held up a finger and drank some of the broth from her soup. I tried to stifle a laugh as she brought it back down. There was more then a little bit dribbling from the side of her face where the scar gave the girl her name.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the Smiler actually looked embarrassed.

The character in question assumed a guise to help out the main characters, Croissant Mask (name is presumably a japanese pun that we don't get), Simca stole the costume, swapped it out with the extremely slutty one there, and simca is dressed up as Croissant mask
    >> Corgi 05/11/10(Tue)00:47 No.9744255

Well, I wasn't too close. I mostly followed to see Gator try something big. He was very good at what he did after all. If he could beat the Smiler, then things might change in the city. Everyone knew she was part of the Balance, and she was the easiest Hero of the punks to find. If she fell, balance might start shifting and big things would happen. Most of the others hardly made themselves known, and when they did the facts got so distorted that no one really knew what happened. Hell, the last time one of the big Spicers came out, the man apparently turned into a roaring inferno as he tore down the streets, leaving melted concrete and flash burns on several unfortunate victims.

The Smiler though was weird. I knew a little about her, everyone has. She's scary, and she's good at what she does. That's about it. Looking at the small woman talk to the monstrous Gator though, I couldn't see what everyone was talking about. She stood and paid for her meal, the owner thanking her and telling her that the big special was coming soon. She nodded eagerly, talking for a few minutes as Gator waited. He wasn't a patient man, and I was surprised her didn't attempt to strike her down on the spot. Soon as they were out though, us three heading towards the race track. We gathered something of a crowd along the way. The Smiler was famous after all.

We got to the designated race area. It was a simple thing compared to the sewers or the Spice's special routes. Just a coupleof runer's tricks and you would have been fine. The crowd cheered as the two took to the line. The start of the race was dominated by the Gator. He took off like a rocket, with the Smiler left far behind after only a few moments.. It was obvious who was faster. I took to my bike in order to catch up, and I began to see why the Smiler was dangerous.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)00:48 No.9744275

The artist does GREAT art. But his story telling is shit. The plot gets unnecessarily convoluted and it seems like he's pretty lost himself.

This means that the beginning of his series are very interesting, but loses me over time.

    >> Corgi 05/11/10(Tue)00:49 No.9744300

She seemed disgusting in her movements. I truly cannot describe it anymore. Everything she did, from leaping over a trashcan to quickly climbing a building for a shortcut made something in me want to look away. It was revolting, and, frankly, terrifying. She smiled the whole time, more so then that big scar would indicate. It was like her entire mouth stretched open, like a Jack o'lanturn, to reveal far too many teeth. She began to laugh, a high pitched, piercing sound that will wake me in a cold sweat. She seemed to be covered in a sickly black smoke, like smog or ooze.

I pedaled faster as she went over the building. The scarf was the last thing I saw, and I could swear it winked at me with eyes that weren't there. I rounded the corner, banking too hard and crashing. I quickly stood and collected my bike, as best as my shaking knees and sweaty palms would allow. I saw her though. She stood next to Gator. He was on his knees and his face as white as snow. The Smiler didn't even seem human now, almost like a thick, black sludge given human form. Eyes opened and closed at random over her entire body, and her mouth was twisted into a terrible parody of a smile. Her eyes gleamed and the ground itself seemed to die around her. The building she climbed over looked as though it had been abanded for years, decayed and forgotten. Gator couldn't tear his eyes away from that monster in front of him. She touched his shoulder, and I saw her head dart and close her mouth with a wet crunch. Gator screamed.

I blinked, and all that was left was the small frame of the Smiler running off to finish the race, with Gator crying on the ground in one piece.
And that's it for my terrible story. Wanted to try writing about one of the punks when they start hitting the 300 levels, where they start becoming the Wave instead of just the surfer.

Though, I do like to think Gator later went to the Bodhisattvas to recover and ended up joining them.

Battery runs long and fairly efficiently but with little benefit over normal aside from possibly better acceleration and max speed, and dynamo builds up as you move, and unleashes its charge over a much shorter time for FUCKING INSANE SPEED OH MY GOD I'M THE MOTHERFUCKING FIST OF THE NORTH STAR JESUS CHRIST

you really aughta stick the tic tac in there somewhere. it can easily be modified as an attack, and at higher levels you could be able to tic tac off of people (a gang or group of fuzz are trying to block your path and you tic tac off of them in succession until you get to the other side). i'd also replace the slide with underbar since the underbar can not only get you under things but through them as well, you could use it to swing from something and kick someone, and anyone who slides on pavement at high speeds deserves road rash. it's also just more efficient, which is what parkour is about. jus muh two cents.

I'd assume they'd be the official weapon of high ranking police officers and high-teer assassins.

Like, just having one basically tells everyone you're a badass and you'd better hope you can actually use the thing so when the next punk who thinks he can take you finds out you'll actually be able to defend yourself.
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)01:37 No.9745180
Underbar, slide- the gist is the same, as for the tic tac I got that as a suggestion but it seems its only use would be as flavor since runners have freedom of movement any way, and you could just kick someone and say you're tic tacking off of them anyway.

If you're going to make writefaggotry about skatepunk or whatever rather than pretending you're a pretentious hipster you could actually be a pretentious hipster.

i mean in the new sort of kind of post-everything sensibilities we have coming out the key is the key is you have to kind of tie everything back to free jazz where it all came from so commas are out and punctuation is out except maybe periods every now and again. really though this whole atonal syncopated movement thats springing up in a few places is pretty intereststing but if you want to write about it you you you need to understand how it would flow and make your writing get across the rhythm of the music or lack thereof so start employing some interesting literature choices improper sentence structure et cetera and make it so that reading your writefag bullshit is listening to the music that kind of defines and sort of partially realized albarn future

I feel like this is unfinished. Just some punk ass kid getting his ass whupped and then saved? That's mundane bullshit.

It should go on. Kid skating around, doing his kinda shitty thing, generally being a mopey little dork. Some Crazy chick boarder blasts by, busts some Awesome moves, and then tells him to man the fuck up, before giving him a little instruction, tour, and pep talk.

The next day, he boards in, trips and generally makes a fool out of the bullying cunts before getting into class. Then, he watches how his teacher moves, and realises "Oh shit, she's the boarder who taught me!".

I realise it was kinda implied she was a punk, attributing colour to her, but this aint a subtle setting.

Which is why I'm writing the fiction I am right now, to show if I can grasp the more desperate struggle of the few and exactly what disenfranchises a youth in Velo so that they turn to the Punk culture and start down the path towards gaining aforementioned superpowers.

The fact that there aren't any other RPGs like it doesn't make that BAD, per se. All RPGs have their roots in D&D, in which movement was a sort of afterthought to the rules (less so as the game went on, though). As such, all subsequent RPGs share that bias to a degree or were specifically designed to remove that bias.

I'm not sure about the emphasis on "color" and "greys" in the game, either. I mean, it works as a metaphor, but if you start taking it literally it becomes really silly, like that tagging game that flopped, "Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure". Just my opinion though.
    >> Zhuren 05/11/10(Tue)11:01 No.9751111
I am firmly of the belief you could run an entire campaign at the 10* level and have it be interesting, that was the design philosophy I had behind my original fluff attempts and I do not think it is any less true now.

Games, settings, fluff, it's all what you make of it limited only by your imagination. Find four other people who find the concept interesting and you have a game. Besides the game isn't even out of Alpha. Tons of work still needs to go into it to make it a system worth playing.

I'll be taking my laptop to work today to continue writing the really terrible fiction. Its -so- good. And by good I mean it's terrible in all the ways I love about things hackneyed and tacky.

Crab skating (AKA the switch foot) is where you point both feet in opposite directions. It's an extremely important move in ground skating and many moves (and dodging people) require it.

As said before. The beginning of this game is gonna focus more on the much more low key sections of the game. The 10* level. This would be the fun, more earthy realistic level. As realistic as this game gets anyway.

The crap with the Smiler going all abomination I posted would be higher level of the 30*.

It more a focus on expression. Gray is just thier unform and they're business colors of black and white. Punks rebel by using every other part of this spectrum.

Also, have we decided what titles are for each level? Like I put down that people in the 30*s are Heroes, since it tickled my fancy and they remind me of more mythological things. As it is, I would like to figure that out. One of those tiny details that might be nice to add. And better names then what I came up with.

He has a point, maybe we should stick to the first one.

Also, I think we need to work out a good blurb for VeloCITY. We should probably avoid the word punk as it has a load of connotations that don't really apply to our guy's. Possibly also leave out " The Man " cause that one has a LOT of teen angst attached to it for some people.

i figure use a token or something to mark what your style is at the time. that way you can tell at a glance what it is at any moment while racing, but can change it quickly and easily a you go. start at f, when you do well enough slide it up to d, then you stack it and move it back to f, and so on.

    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:34 No.9752240
I think this thread started bad, with a misleading pic and a not particularly representative fluff bit.

We really need to make a proper blurb, which says what this setting isn't about.

This Aint just punk kids fighting the man. This is a newly arisen culture of freedom of expression and movement, anarchy of mind and body, which is attempting to break free and establish itself as a legitimate force in the world.

On the other side is mundanity, the ordinary, grey world. The Man isn't some unified force of opposition, and I don't think the term really fits the setting. There isn't The Man, there's The Grey. That general feeling of the mundane and ordinary, which makes people think being Grey is the "Right" way to be, and people who are Different are Wrong.

Punks see themselves in a thousand different ways. Some are crusading philosopher poets, others are kids having fun or scientists of speed experimenting with this new medium of movement. The Punk movement is as divided and varied as the Grey is monotonous and dull.

I dunno, I'm rambling, I just think quite a lot of this thread has got the wrong idea. This isn't "Lol skaters rock police suck". Its a fictional world, where things are different and the rules change. Its not angsty punks tagging neighbourhoods and being douchebags- or, at least not mostly, and folks like that'll get fucked over in the long run.

Its a setting about freedom, and individuality, and the forces that would crush that. At least, that's what it seems to me. The folks who like the setting are as varied as the folks in it, I'd guess, so make up your own mind. Just don't judge a book by its cover.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:36 No.9752266

you gotta admit, though, that cover's not that good. the original is much better. just too bad it has copyrighted artwork in it. i was enthusiastic about the first few threads when this started originally, but the last few threads haven't been very good. they've just been kinda lackluster, i guess.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:40 No.9752318

Eh, it needs a little cleaning up. I've just been around from the early threads, and I get the feeling that, no offence to Zhuren, he's not the best at clearly stating what the setting is about.

His stuff is still good mind. Its just easy to get the wrong idea about the setting if you read it out of context.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:40 No.9752320
Movement is how you hey from one cool setpiece to the next. Chases can be a setpiece, sure. But isn't the game just going to be one long fucking chase? Running, skating, whatever, away from the bad guys?
    And when they catch you?
You fight back or just run away with style again?
Does this mean enemies are reduced to grind rails to perform sick tricks off in order to run away flipping the bird? How long could this formula keep people hooked for?
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:42 No.9752351

Think Mirror's Edge (or what Mirror's Edge should be). Disarm / stun them, then run away because you're going to get fucked if you fight.

Yeah, it's not necessary going to be a chase after chase - that's like saying DnD will be a fight after a fight.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:42 No.9752354
there's still combat and roleplaying. the system just puts more emphasis on movement than other games.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:44 No.9752366

You're thinking about it the wrong way.

For these punks, movement doesn't need to be a means. It can be an end in itself, and it can also be a means to more than just going from A to B. You can still fight, you can still run missions, you can do pretty much anything you can in a normal campaign. You'll just, usually, do it at high speed, with a splash of colour.

There are groups like the Blackbirds, in the shadow of the punk movement, running infiltration and espionage. But even they aint grey or black. They're cool dark blue and green, subtle colours which stay hidden in the night.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:44 No.9752367

    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)12:50 No.9752452

I think in the recent threads things have gotten a little bogged down in details, people trying to do new stuff which has already been done and getting a little lost, or people discovering it and getting a wrong idea. No offence to Zhuren, whose a nice guy and an enthusiastic contributor, but he Did get a thread or two derailed and has had a little trouble getting a proper feel for the setting, although he seems to be getting the flow now, which is very good. Hopefully, post alpha, and when we have a proper blurb so we don't get so much misunderstanding, quality'll go up again.

A lot of people like the game, and a lot of people see a lot of potential in it for interesting storytelling which you seem to be ignoring, or just aren't seeing in the premise. That's fair enough. Its not a game for you, and it wasn't intended as a game for you.

Personally, I'm not going to use any maps for it. Speed, acceleration and so on can work fine as relative values, and as long as I give a strong description of a location, conveying its themes as well as the major features, I think I can trust some good PC's to come up with cool tricks and such all on their own.

This is fucking amazing but it still needs the area for like, 6 slots for the character's personal traits and flaws. Other than that, amazing.

Actually, to massively paraphrase- this is a bare bones version of the game. With time I'll be able to improve it all such that it can possibly have more all-encompassing stats and skills so that it can be abstracted to encompass all angles that the setting can possibly have to offer- for now? I'm designing it more in the mindset of a war game creator, completely focused on this one angle above the rest.

It simply has not blossomed yet.

No. Sorry, but we've got the alpha down to Almost finished. Suggesting rules mods, at this stage, is almost entirely worthless.

get rid of "vigor" everyone has five hitpoints in shape. your "muscle" can help reduce damage or something

I'm just saying it's not anywhere near streamlined enough
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)13:26 No.9753033
Alright, while I'd normally consider some of these things I have to ask: how the fuck much do I have to file down a system I made in a week? None of these ideas are remotely useful to me for now- the system's already cemented around 4 stats and 4 skills, the vigor system is so that people don't get knocked out, invariably, in so many hits, and all that.

Countermeasures and balance- but it's still all significantly simpler than most RPGs, to the point it could be played as a board game
    >> A bad man !UYklPQPVhw 05/11/10(Tue)13:29 No.9753061

then start over because if you're trying to create a system that moves fast you've gotten too bloated already
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)13:31 No.9753082
It has a maximum of one roll per the equivalent of a turn per player, with the target to hit being easily found by mashing two numbers together.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)13:31 No.9753086

No. Fuck off. We have a system. We are going to playtest it. If it works, great. If it doesn't, well change it.

We are Not going to scrap a weeks progress for some random fuckwit latecomer. Screw you.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)13:32 No.9753094
you could add "out cold" as the last shape box and instead of using vigor as hp use it as a role to resist damage to shape/a way to recover shape
    >> A bad man !UYklPQPVhw 05/11/10(Tue)13:32 No.9753097
when you're trying to make something run as fast as possible you have to constantly be asking yourself "is this absolutely, 100% necessary, will the game be unplayable suck without it?" If your answer is "no" or "maybe" then you rip it out and toss it in the trash

Aha, a new Velo Thread! Now, where did I get too...

Joining Spice is deceptively simple. You do not Find Spice.
    They will find you.
Chaotic as it is, Spice's ability to gather information is impressive. They have members in the majority of Gangs within Velo, and even considering their relative lack of Gang-Loyalty, Spicer's do talk about more than just Tricks on the boards. Furthermore, you can always count on a Spicer to have some means of Recording video on his Person, be it a Camera, Phone, or even Just the Skills to hack local Security Cameras. Of course, this is because Spice encourages, almost mandates, its members to Record every Trick they see that, as a Spicer would put it, is Especially Flavoursome. These videos are then Posted to the Message board, although Many of them find their way to other Sites over time. There, the vast Hordes of Spicers pick them apart, appraising Every Trick with an expert Eye, Praising the the elite, and Denouncing the Mediocre.
Spices recruiting strategy is simplicity itself. If a particular Video gets a particularly Good Response, they have Found their Latest Recruit. If their lucky, a Spicer will already know the Punk in question, And will be able to, Anonymously, contact them and Offer them membership. If their not, it becomes a Game, Spicers competing to See who can be the First to Present, however openly they want, the Prospective Spicer with the Offer.

so you don't actually want legitimate criticism you want slowpitch shit that you can knock out of the park.

If you're this invested in the status quo you've created when you're only a week into the project you might as well just pack it in.
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)13:39 No.9753199
It's not as much that, as much as your ideas are completely irrelevant. This is the very starting rendition to the game- everything, rules-wise, is now cemented. I just need to actually finish it all up, host it, and then playtesting can start and I can alter it from there depending on what parts are or are not fun.

If I wanted to scrape off everything that made the game not tristat DX, I would have.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)13:48 No.9753296
so how do these personal traits work?
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)13:50 No.9753313
Basically, just 3 of each, you put in 3 things that your character is good at or general positive stuff, like, "Good at cooking" or "Expert mechanic" and then you put in 3 not-so-good things about your character, like, "Cannot dance", or, "Unstealthy"

Basically, a catch-all replacement for an actual skill system.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)13:51 No.9753337
So I'm still doing most of the math, but it seems like the style values of tricks are really low compared to the wagering bonus.

For a lot of these tricks, a single wager will double the style you get. I'm not entirely clear on what the penalties for failure are, but it seems like this will encourage a lot of wagering even when a character's attribute is very, very low.

Do you lose a fixed amount of style for a failed roll? Or do you drop a grade? In the first case the optimal decision may be to fail hilariously until you finally land one super trick, which seems incorrect.
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)13:53 No.9753360
Lose one style point if your fail minorly (by less than 5), 5 if you bail out and fail majorly (more than 5)

All I've got on that issue so far is that it really needs to be ironed out- otherwise, it's all about wagering when you're good at something, and playing it safe when you are really, really not.

Offers to Join Spice come in many Forms. Sometimes, its just an E-mail, with Login Details and a single question; "Spice; you want in?". Sometimes, a more "low Tech" approach is used, Sending the message via Post, Phone, Or even just a Piece of Paper tied to a Brick. Recently, the Trend is for a Simple Business card, slipped into the Prospectives possession without their Notice.
If you Accept the Membership, All you need to is visit the board and Log in using the Details given in the Invitation. If you don't, just leave it. The Invitation will expire after a Day or so, and they'll never Contact you again.
Unless, of course, you catch their Attention again, In a Bigger way than before.

Of the Original Spice Gang, only a few members Remain. Only two of the Original Admins are still Alive, Dr Tobasco and Cajun. Some like to claim that Jolokia is also alive, but most Accept that he's Dead. Furthermore, Cajun left the Gang years back to get Married, and has not been heard from since, and so Tobasco is the sole Remaining Admin for the board. While there are lesser Moderators, only she holds the Ability to Ban or Expel Members, a power she Exercises rarely and only against those Who break the Cardinal Rule of Spice; No Fakeing. She keeps her Streetname a tight Secret, going so Far as to Disguise herself in the Sporadic Videos she posts. And, While her skills are undeniably great, she admit she is "No Replacement for Jolo", and her Popularity in the gang results from her skills in Maintaining the board against the Frequent attempts to Bring it Down.

We seem to have gotten bogged down a bit these past few threads. I suppose it was inevitable what with the CRAZYAWESOME outpouring of idea's in the first couple.

We REALLY need a blurb for this though, or else we're going to end up arguing what does and doesn't fit the setting in every thread.

Although most Gangs dislike Spice because of their recklessness and Irresponsibility, there are some gangs that are more positive towards them. And, Likewise, some that dislike them More than others.

Spice tends to get along well with the Fireworks, especially since Jolokia, the most famous Spicer of all, Joined the Fireworks shortly after the Original Spice was "disbanded". Spice and the Speedfreaks have something of a "Friendly rivalry", since Many of the most famous Spicer Tricks involved significant Speed. big Pepper, up until his death in a Traffic collision, was a Popular member of the speed-loving Gang.

On the other side, the High Fliers actively denounce Spice as "Reckless Idiots with no respect for the City or its people". Punksquad is known to Have a Policy of "Permanently Removing" any Spicer found within their Ranks from the Punk Community. Spice has also, in various ways, expressed its dislike of the Balence in the past, seeing their rules as stifling the Creativity of the Punk community and Preventing some Tricksters from reaching their full "Flavor". How the Balence feels about Spice is unknown, as are most things about the Enigmatic Group, but the common perception is that they are "Not Fond" of them.

Ok, I've been following VeloCITY off and on for about 5 days now, and I just noticed something about speed.

On the movement page (and I realize that this is probably the worst way to gather this information) the blader's max speeds are all given at 6. Now while I assume they are all low level, a max speed of 6 implies these bladers move at a rough estimate of 6 meters per second, which translates to only about 13 miles per hour.

Now correct me if I wrong, but doesn't this seem abhorrently slow? I'm almost certain that I myself was clocked at 10 mph (granted I was going downhill) on my blades when I was a kid, and this is a fantastical setting.
    >> Nothing Man 05/11/10(Tue)14:43 No.9754071
Yeah, but, the trick is- if you're going to try creating a game at a realistic scale like that then the sheer fucking mapmaking would be INSANE, it's already kind of specific since you need to think of rails and ramps and pipes and all that but at such a massive scale you'd need a huge table to get races or such done.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/10(Tue)14:48 No.9754159

Oh god, now whenever I imagine any of the characters doing tricks they'll be doing teeny little hops at a snails pace....

The Spice Saga draws to a close.

While Jolokia is, by far, the most Famous Spicer, a few current Members have gained a small degree of Fame among the wider Community. These include Gingersnap, a Boarder known for a Series of Extreme Grinding videos, Five-Spice, a Blader with exceptional Wall riding Skills who Hangs out around the Docks, and Old Bay, a relatively elderly Punk who Likes to Jump off tall buildings.

Oh, and a note on Leaving Spice. Spicers are free to leave at any time, although rejoining is harder. Generally, a Spicer will only be forcefully Expelled from the Gang if they Fake a Trick for a Video, or are found to be consorting with Yoghurt, a Rival Internet Gang created topple Spice from its position of Supremacy above other "Extreme Stunt" Gangs. Those Expelled from the Gang can never Rejoin, although the Official punishment ends there.
However, those who are punished in this fashion should beware that not All Spicers are so content to Leave it at that. So Called "Red Hot" Spicers, comparable to Religious Evangelists, are known to Hunt down Disgraced Spicers to "Punish them Properly". While the Higher Rankers of Spice do not necessaries approve of this activity, they make no obvious attempts to prevent it either.

    Finally, I leave you with the Unoffical Motto of Spice;

Taste the Flavour of the Burning Streets, Set aflame your Passion and Ignite your Soul.
