Since Velo is a man made island, that would mean that all of the parks would require extra effort in caretaking. What groups would be the more environmentally motivated ones? The hippies?

Well I'm going to head to bed for tonight. I suggest for this thread is we finalize how items work, and work out an idea for how much crap costs.

Also, idea for golden rule of the game

"In the game of VeloCITY, momentum is key. Flash decisions to continue the combo sometimes won't leave time for rule checking. Let the MC decide if it's cool enough to slide when the heat is on and to let the bones roll. The rules are a guideline for your wheels after all."

    Or something like that.

Is it really all going to be a man-made island? I thought there were at least some natural valleys and hills. In terms of more environmentalist groups... off the top of my head, I think that the Urban Tribal, Bodhisattavas, and possibly the High Fliers (seeing as they have such a good reputation with their locals) would be the most involved. The Flower Children too, when they're not making or dealing new hallucinogens and amphetamines.

This is just a little suggestion that just came to mind. It may have even been mentioned before. Feel free to toss it out if you're not focusing on this kind of stuff at the moment.

You mentioned the idea of every PC having a theme song, that the MC would play when he steals the show. Going off this idea, what if, when the character in question has his song playing, he gets some sort of bonus until the track ends? Like, earning double Style Points, or getting a boost in your rolls? Figure this could encourage the PCs to get creative. Could even result in a bit of competition. I could see people trying to play King of the Hill with the soundtrack.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)00:15 No.9619965
Double style points works especially well, since any style points not spent on tricks convert to XP after the scene's done.

There's a wagering system that basically lets you tweak tricks into anything you fucking want, one of them includes turning them into attacks, or making them more stylish, or making them a taunt.

So, say, a biker could do that with an average... whatever you call that, I'm not good with BMX tricks, and hit someone along their path with the back of their wheel.

Speed is factored into damage, and since bikes go the fastest, they'll turn people into salsa if they do it right.

About the backwards thing- I mentioned that wagering system, right?

    This is the trick:

    Ground Trick: Wall-up [2 Energy] [1 Style]
“Oh, come on, running up a wall? Stop bullshitting physics.”
Roll Muscle+Air success = you can start climbing [Momentum] tiles up from the ground

And this would be the relevant wager

"Get an extra style point, -3"

Applied two or three times for sheer ABSOLUTE CUHRAZINESS

So assuming you had alright muscle+air, let's say 10, you would have a 10 to 20% chance of not falling face-first back down onto the concrete.

Probably some sort of second wind. Say, you actually stop and pause for a couple ticks, your energy regeneration is accelerated. There's also energy drinks, pills. Hell, in JSR/JSRF, you regain health by picking up what basically looks like a first-aid spraycan.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)01:04 No.9620747
Hm... You could PROBABLY do that, by making every one of the tricks in the jump a set-up, only instead of increasing the NEXT trick's roll bonus, you increase the combo's ending damage by 1.

However, instead of a wager, I'd make that a trick specialty.

I can think of 2 ways.
Regain energy on a successful stunt or on a decent hit. Stunts keep the action stylish while hits keep combat focused on offense.
A stunt that is also an attack is obviously the best option, but is the hardest to pull off.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)01:06 No.9620766
That works perfectly, every turn you regenerate 1 energy- but, every tick you spend not moving or tricking, you regenerate 1 extra energy

If you spend an entire turn idling, you also move one up the shape track.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)01:07 No.9620777
Actually, no, scratch that second half- it should be that regenerating energy that exceeds max should reset to 1, moves up the shape track 1, and then rejuvenate from there

So no shape-up each turn of idling. Just the 6 energy per turn.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)01:08 No.9620791
Thinking on this more, that could be the special trick of the Bodhisattvas- meditation, lets you convert 1 style point back into 2 energy points per turn- you can still be moving or even in air when you do this.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)01:09 No.9620806
For biking, Vert and Air should be separate, I think. One is gaining height, the other is jumping gaps. And don't forget about ground tricks, bunny hops, etc.

    >How should energy be capable of regenerating in combat?

Successful strings of tricks might have an energy pay-back to offset their cost. Getting into the groove, as it were...you keep hitting the tricks, you feel more confident and can keep hitting the tricks.

Maybe each character could also fluff their own way of gaining energy once per "scene" as it were. One guy chugs an energy drink, while another gets juice of flirting with bystanders, and this girl loves to sing out loud while she rides...

They all do the same thing mechanically, but it's your own personal style that does it in-character.

So instead of each trick building upon each other in a combo, you would have each trick in said chain progress normally, but if you stick the landing, it counts as a m-m-m-MONSTER FINISH.

So it depends on what you want. Do you want each trick in a chain to be awesome and make the next ones better, or are you strictly looking for the big finish?

Something that takes a great deal of your momentum away, but lets you stop or slow without bailing and still racks up style. Could be useful for a little extra time to tag a spot, scout a path, or to let your pursuers shoot past you while you change directions.
This could include handstands, jukes, stationary wheelies or manuals, "grinds" that don't move, but look cool, and the like.

I assume that's one of the classes. Can I suggest another? The guys who shoot for the most insane stunts...and don't seem to mind when they go crashing to the ground after they beef it. They're known as "Bodybags" and they actually seem to gain energy from injury. They're usually, bruised, bloodied, bandaged, and scarred to hell and back. It's not uncommon to see one of the psychos skating with an arm in a fresh cast.

Mechanically, they'd get a bonus of...some sort...from wiping out, however that fits in.

I got a mental image of two boarders hitting the same ramp simultaneously, at the same speed- They both start the combo by performing an indy and they both put in 2 style wagers- they grab each others' boards out from their feets and use those to do the grabs, and at the end of the combo which would presumably switch between different grabs, they switch their boards back and land.

They're actually one of the gangs in the setting. They have a heavy Buddhist/Hindu influence, so they can get away with it.

As for your suggestion, there's probably some painkillers or drugs somewhere that basically nullify damage for a while, only to come back later in force and fuck you royally.

Sometimes, someone goes for a trick which is So insane, So ostentatious, so completely loony, its pretty cool Even if they fuck it up.

Are there any rules for social interactions, as in, actual roleplay? After all, there *is* action outside of freefalls and high-speed races. Say you're just chilling out in Momentum. You gotta mingle, make contact with people. You want to be known, you gotta throw yourself out there.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)10:25 No.9627496
the tuck and roll/roulement (sp?) is a pretty basic movement in parkour - having it down pat is pretty much essential before trying anything more impressive than a few low-height vaults. how easy is that going to be to execute successfully? and i would also suggest having the next step up on it being quite a leap - a properly executed roulement redirects almost all momentum, and as long as you arent falling from ridiculous heights the worst you can expect is maybe a bruise on your back. having a weak version and a strong version would mean that it rapidly becomes available to dedicated runners while anyone trying to dabble in running would get the benefits of the initial tuck and roll but not the secondary version
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)10:29 No.9627525
also, when looking for tricks for runners just youtube gymnasts and martial artists. the physical conditioning is similar - grace, fluidity, control and speed over pure strength. my parkour teachers are capable of doing some impressive backflips, barrel rolls, spinning kicks and other stuff like that when theyre feeling playful.

There'll probably be some stuff dealing with it, but most of the time you don't really need rules on how to roleplay, as such.

Hmm... as a general thought, we currently have four option for wagers-

Set Up (Take a -3 on this trick, if you succeed, your next trick gets a -2)

Trick Attack (Take a -2 on this trick to make it an attack)

Pure Style (Take a -3 on this trick, if successful gain an extra style point)

Serious Air (Take a -2 on this trick, increase air time by one).

Can anyone think of anything else which could be a useful thing to be able to trade points of bonus for, in order to enhance a trick?

I imagine that, on the fly, the MC could give penalties and bonuses in return for certain crazy stuff a PC wants to pull, but a solid Wager list could help form a strong foundation for this.

Its pretty simple, really. You trade off between chance of success and the effects of success, "wagering" a penalty on your roll and, if it still succeeds, gaining more from it.

But yeah, it'll require some good explanation.

Hmm... perhaps a combo based wager. -2 on the first trick, -1 on the second, +/- 0 on the third, +1 on the fourth, and +2 on the fifth and all other tricks you manage to chain together into a single epic combo.

It might be fun to throw in some " Signature " songs for the NPC's in the PDF, obviously it would have a little " Feel free to swap this if you want " disclaimer but it would be a really good way to get across the style of the character / location.

Should we stick to the default genre for signature tunes (The cool electronic stuff we've had so far) etc, or should we just try to match them thematically, and feel free to move into other genre's?
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)12:12 No.9628509

I vote for making songs that fit the players. Bringing in some classic rock for some people, electronic stuff for others.

I do think we should mention something about possibly embarrassment on type of music though. Benny Hill is not a very good choice unless you're just THAT GOOD at messing everyone up in your wake.

    I have one.
He's a blader of notable skill, famous for his superfast delivery and messenger services. He doesn't do stunts very often, preferring instead to create and keep as much speed as possible. He has been seen scaling impossible walls, leaping over huge gaps, and leaping off of suicidal ledges, only to land safe and back on course.
The gangs consider him neutral, and the authorities tend to ignore him, as he commits no vandalism and only endangers himself.

    Warning!: Incoming Writefaggotry!

Jennifer Crabtree was still Jennifer at the moment, or worse Jeni, but she was trying real hard. It was a simple run today but very visible, Doc Beat wanted them all on their SS-game going in and going out. For her that had meant new gear. She buckled the thick straps of the boots tight and lifted her foot, the new grind plates were heavier than she was used to, freshly waxed. They shined and felt stiff, unbeaten by countless miles. She saw her reflection in the nu-leather and shiny steel toe, the little girl that looked back looked unready.

"Yo breezie, gonna be able to keep up this time?" teased Reakshop. He leered good-naturedly, as if his sexism was a compliment and a god given right of his burnt sienna skin, inextricable from his topknot of dreadlocks.

Jennifer flipped him the bird as she pulled her Synth-Tek gloves on and grinned right back brave as she could, like she knew the other her would do. "You trippin son, maybe you should be trying to outrace your grandma Flyboy." She twisted the last word like the double-speak compliment/insult it was, feeling her new self overtake her. She got a good chuckle out of the crew from that, especially from Reak.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)13:11 No.9629311
She thought of her own grandmother, born on November 22, 1963. The bird hadn't made it to see ninety years of age but she had taught her granddaughter lots of things, both of them. She had given them books, subversive ones, ones that made you think, ones that set her apart from a lot of the other Punks. Perhaps it was the isolation of education that kept her apart... then again maybe not. She took a deep breath and breathed in the air, pulling the backpack on containing the paints and explosives. She slammed her boot to the guardrail of the parking garage they stood upon and it sparked, Good sign. Looking out at the hyper-urbanized sprawl that was their life, looking down at the several hundred foot drop just beneath the little girl inside ran away terrified.

Jennifer Crabtree was afraid of heights.

    Slyder was not.

Slyder breathed in the danger, looking across the 10+ foot gap and a three story drop to the next building. Adrenaline burned inside of her, a pyre of power built on the psyche she discarded like used plastic wrap. She turned and looked to her crew, stretching once more for good measure.

"All right boys!" She took four steps back and crouched in her runners start, the bladers and the boarders aligned in a V behind her. "Lets Fly!"
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)13:12 No.9629331

In four steps Slyder beat out an acceleration record put down several years before, even though there was no one to clock it. No one would ever know. All the crew knew was that the 2.I.C had taken off and if they wanted a run to match they needed to burn their souls brighter, for Slyder loved The Street, and on days like today they could swear The Street loved her back.

sorry, first writefaggotry in a long while:

Taz stood gazing over the city, his weight shifting imperceptibly as gusts of wind threatened to give him an express trip off the ledge and onto the pavement, free of charge. His sister watched nervously from the safety of the roof proper – he’d been training her a little in parkour, and she showed some promise but she was still far too nervous to put her balance to the test just yet. And yet the tiny girl was a fiend in her skates. He shook his head with a smirk, remembering the time he agreed to race her just to find she had blocked off half his favourite shortcuts and actually followed him through the other half with freaking wheels on. Henna, the tiny red-haired kamikaze.

And with that he turned back, a short jump getting him over the alleyway and back onto the opposite building’s roof. They had a race to get to. With a quick grin to his sister he held up his hand, fingers extended. Five... he put down a finger. Four... another. Three... Henna was grinning, and he knew she was going to take off early this time. Two... Then, flipping her the bird he burst into a sprint toward the side of the house, laughing inside at the look of surprise on her face. Reaching the edge he spun around, dropped a few feet and grabbed a window ledge. Climbing down quickly, practically dropping himself from handhold to handhold he hazarded a glance up. Where was Henna? Had she gone down the other side? No matter. Only a few metres from the ground he pushed off the wall, hitting the grass lightly with his feet and dropping into a roll in a single fluid motion.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)14:01 No.9629966
He decided to sit on the grass and watch the building, waiting for his sister. She couldn’t be too far behind and he could spare a few seconds to think of a choice insult. He’d just thought of a real burner when he realised... she was sitting at the bus stop across the street laughing at him. How the hell had she beaten him? He grinned as he saw the rope she was swinging around. Of course, she had cheated. Just like he taught her. Taz was so proud – there was no way they were gonna lose this race.

Also, I been meaning to ask. Is there gonna be things you can get outside of tricks for style or things like that. I hate to use the analogy, but like Feats in DnD or Charms in Exalted?

Let me use the leader of the Black Roses' for an example. She is supposed to both be very attractive, and good at hidden weaponry. Would there be a Trick, or style, some other such wording, that represents her ability to distract her opponents or give her a bonus with her weaponry, or will it mostly just be fluffy style?

Alright, checking it over- every class will have 12 tricks (6 techniques- including their class basics that they get for free) of their own, plus I'm going to aim for about 5 specialties for each trick, plus 10 tricks in the general tree that anyone can get, plus the 4 combat tricks everyone starts with and possible a few more tacked on to that

Ppllluuuuuss the wagering system which basically lets you narratively say "FUCK THAT THIS TRICK IS NOW SOMETHING DIFFERENT", such as slapping an extra style point onto, say, an indy, suddenly it's a frigid air.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)14:59 No.9630595
Good plan, an advantages/disadvantages system for more character fleshing-out is a good idea, but for now that seems like needless inflation of the system- Once I get the nuts and bolts all finished in the alpha playtest I can release that sort of system as a supplement, see how it flies, and then possibly incorporate it into the next rendition.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)14:59 No.9630603
i would assume there has to be wouldnt there? not all skills and abilites would fall under certain styles, and not every situation a character finds themselves in is going to be with their vehicle of choice available (except us runners :P). any appropriate social skills, combat skills excepting a few style-specific ones (or perhaps a few combat skills that are non-style specific), skills like being able to drive, sing, cook, intimidate, weasel info out of people, hack security feeds...
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)15:01 No.9630630
When I think about it, this is how I can implement it fast-and-easily in the alpha:

You can write in a few things your character is good at that aren't really related to tricks, and have to write an equal amount of things your character is bad at- up to GM approval, of course.

That works. Don't Rest Your Head uses roughly the same system, and that turns out very well.

"My character happens to be very good at lock picking, using hidden weaponry, and knows where to get paint anywhere in the city.
    >> Heretek Dan 05/05/10(Wed)15:06 No.9630712
How would this style system work for less-style builds? I mean, Traceurs aren't going to pop off crazy arials like a Free-runner would, so I would assume that they'd have bonuses based on location and speed or something of that nature?
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)15:07 No.9630728
Nah I'm just using tricks I'm grabbing from wiki. You can always make shit up, and in fact I would say that is encouraged.

An indy is a skateboarder using his back hand to grab the back (toe) side of their board while in air

A frigid air is the same thing, only the skater kicks out his front foot into the air.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)15:09 No.9630756
Traceurs would have to aim for objectives more than anything- my idea is that in addition to the overall goal the GM would set around 5 secondary objectives for XP rewards.

In general, if traceurs are well-built, they won't need that much style- if they do, they can always wager on otherwise ordinary tricks.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:09 No.9630759
Posting a story relevant to the setting:

    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:10 No.9630782
well, parkour and free running use essentially the same skills just with different goals and mindsets. a free runner would be able to skip the fancyness and focus on economy of motion if they chose. admittedly the dedicated traceur will not necessarily have the experience or know-how to start tricking up the joint if they wanted to. presumably though a traceur would not get involved in a trick competition, only racing.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)15:11 No.9630802
In fact, yes, it does- not on the radio, that's snazzy, but songs on MP3 players are considered to have high enough quality to give bonuses.

Songs generally last 5 turns, with the bonuses shifting every turn (1 turn = 5 ticks, 1 tick = 1 second)

Yes, songs aren't this short, but I don't think designing 24 turns of music bonuses would be fun or useful.

a long time ago and my friends and i used to skateboard

we were aged from 12 to 17 or so, and we thought we were quite cool.
watched all the new videos. raved about who was the best and spent
hours everyday trying to learn the latest moves.. even if they were
    trendy or stupid as fuck.
if it was new, we HAD to learn it, to keep up with progression.

we formed an alliance of local skaters called TEAM BONEFISH
team bonefish had the most talent and members, and therefore
REPUTATION of any skate group in the region
one day team bonefish gathered out front of the main skatespot, the
    XTRA parking lot.
XTRA was a huge grocery store. so big in fact that its parking lot
expanded far beyond the uses of its weak ass customer base.
so we had a entire SECTOR of the parking lot to skate in, and it was
like paradise. this was the headquarters of team bonefish.

well one day we all had our ramps out there and we were skating..
it was getting late and the sun was going down.
    and then...
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:14 No.9630856

he was older. probably in his 20's. he had long hair and his faded
clothes, unlike his hair, seemed like they had been washed a thousand times.
he was a far cry different from our trendy skate pants and shirts.
his tattered sneakers were like the sandals of a gladiator who had fought
in the colloseum his whole life.
we had this double length/ height curb set up. a single curb was like 6
inches high and about 6 feet long, so a double is 12 inches high by 12
feet long. nobody could really do anything great on it. we kinda built it
just because we could. a few of the better skaters could do a trick or two
over it.. or slide the very end or something
but this guy came riding up

    this GUY

this fucking skater of the apocalypse came riding up faster than anyone
we had ever seen. his hair blew in the wind as he approached the double
his face was calm, his features relaxed and confident, beautiful like a
    michaelangelo sculpture
everyone sat back and watched silently.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:15 No.9630884

Now i will take this time to say.. that the first trick a skater attempts
when he enters a skate spot is VERY important. it instantly indicates how
good a skater he is, and therefore dictates the amount of attention or
respect he should recieve from the surrounding riders.

this trick is judged on 2 major points

POINT ONE- the DIFFICULTY of the trick. the harder the trick, the more respect.

POINT TWO- the EXECUTION of the trick. anyone can ride up and TRY the hardest
trick invented. unless you actually land it or come REALLY close, then it
    doesnt count for jack shit.

    well this guy..

this fucking GUY came up with all eyes on him

    to OUR skatespot

zooming into the heart of TEAM BONEFISH like a arrow of truth into the heart
    of corruption!

KAM! went the tail of his board

and he rose into the air

    everyone watched in horror

it was quite obvious by this time the guy had STYLE.

he effortlessly soared over the impossibly high 12 x 12

setting down his board at the very start of the first curb

he had his back to the direction he was travelling and this had everyone in shock.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:16 No.9630900
because basically he was doing a BASKSIDE LIPSLIDE
and NO ONE we had ever seen in our lives could do a BACKSIDE LIPSLIDE

that was just a trick that kind of existed, but no one could ever even THINK of
TRYING it, more or less DOING IT. to us, we may as well had just seen a unicorn
run across the parking lot. many pros could not do this trick back then. this was
he slid easily onto the second half of the 12 by 12 while everyones jaws dropped
    closer to the asphalt

    he was GOD hauling ASS

he came off perfect, all four wheels landing at once with an audible TNK!
and rode away from the landing with style. everyone screamed and cheered
we danced around him like raving idiots
he did a few other tricks that left us drooling and then sat at the curb with us
and talked. he noted on how we all seemed caught up in the latest and trendiest
tricks.. and he asked WHY do we even skate if we are just pressuring ourselves to
progress and sitting around falling down all day trying tricks that we would never
    land in a thousand years.
    and we saw the truth.

that in all that competitive progression, in all those hours of sweat and tears
all that backstabbing and rumors of who sucked and who was better than who, that
we had forgotten that feeling of the wheels under our feet as you cruise across an
empty glass smooth blacktop parking lot late at night. the feeling of freedom, and
endless possibility just cruising through the city looking for something to ollie.
riding down a hill with your friends..
all these things he told us..
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:18 No.9630929
and we saw for the first time how lost and corrupted we had become.
after everyone went home that night, i stayed and looked at the 12 x 12
it was really late and the signs of team bonefish's presence where everywhere, the
graphitti on the goodwill box that we wall ride on, the little stubs of wax
candles we used to make the curbs slick, empty sodas, mcdonalds wrappers..

something changed in me that night.

that guy had shown me something
and i was kind of afraid of what he said, but i knew he was right
that sometimes even in rebellious freedom, we return to the very thing we strove
to rebel against, like some sort of sick diseased instinct. i sat there and just
stopped. i looked at everything and his words ringing in my ears and i stopped.

Months later XTRA closed down from lack of funds and not long after, due to some
major internal fighting, TEAM BONEFISH disbanded. jealousy, hatred, bad jokes..
    the usual
other skate posse's would come and go.
    but i had changed.

i stopped trying to learn so much new stuff, and just ENJOY what tricks i was good
at. I started skating faster, and becoming more confident. i rode hills with
friends and when i skated, i noticed i had started smiling alot :]

    i was having FUN

just like the first time i had ever stepped on a board, and pushed across the
    kitchen floor..
and that little smiling kid inside of me smiled even bigger.

They called him Ice, aka Ice Dre, aka Andre the Iceman, aka Swift Thug, aka Ice Skater.

If you were to ask Ice what his favorite kind of music is he'd tell you classical. He loved Afrika Bambaata, Kraftwerk, Rodger Troutman, P-Funk, and the Funkadelics. His crew didn't understand it, never understood how he could keep his flow with beats so slow. But there was no doubt he had the skill on his Blades, he could glide. The ground had relinquished its hold on Ice long ago, theirs was now a fitful relationship, growing ever more distant and violent. The ground and Ice often had domestic disputes.

Tonight, though, he didn't just glide, he blazed. It hadn't been a courier mission it had been a set-up. Pigs were thick on the streets, a herd of boars squealing their sirens, red and blue lights of the eyes of the beast flashing menacing, hungry for his flesh.

So he blasted. He blasted straight through a strip mall, glass scattering about his entry point on the second floor as he went through pads first. he spared a moment to push his glasses onto his face tighter and adjust the huge headphones on his ears, 190 beats per minute of Progressive House told him to move from an age when his parents were children, told him to put his hands up in the air from beyond the grave. He listened.

Soul grind down the unmoving escalator rail, skated up the Deco-nouveau architecture of the downtown psudo-riche, and caught air off the sloping 'good idea' of the prole' food court eyecandy. He caught a long high Japan Air in communion to the gods of consumerism and electronics that looked out over these Hallowed Halls of Capitalism.

He hit the ground blazing, skates screaming as he pushed, pushed faster, pushed beyond himself and into the soul of The Street. Silently he screamed in triumph. The Street screamed with him.

He dashed along the sides of the inner walls of the mall, spinning in a whiling cavalcade of Style insanity. He was the groove and the groove cannot be stopped. He approached the exit, solid glass doors standing closed.

A foot kicked out, turning his momentum into a spin, minimizing his impact point, maximizing his damage.

He slid through the air, shards of clear ice flashing in the omnipresent night-light of the city.

None of my characters are really more than 'I like to write fluff'. Given time? Yes, I will mock up a dozen gangs easy and the personalities therein.

I get the feel like every crew is different, that their goals vary wildly. Ice's crew is probably composed of just a few Very talented speedsters who act as couriers pursuing an agenda of personal mastery brought together most likely for the money. Mercenaries.

Slyder's crew on the other hand is probably rather large with a number of sub-crews that latch on cult-of-personality style to the small number of Extremely talented riders that would form basically the leading council. They would be brought together by political activism, reputation, and like all gangs a sense of belonging and family.

sounds very close to the style the game is in (maybe a bit more slang)
    I like it, though
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)15:41 No.9631440
Well the idea (to me) is when you talk in game there should be a nigh incomprehensible flow of slang (I don't have a glossary to work from so I've borrowed a few bits from black culture, didn't go too far because slang evolves) but when you talk -about- the system and setting you are as scientific as possible.

That being said I'd love to get in on a session of VeloCITY: Speakat de Gloss?

    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)16:00 No.9631820

Well his site hasn't updated since 2007 so I guess not. Shame, I liked his style.

Just thought the comic and his story were relevant to the thread. I imagine this is how the characters start out - as smalltime suburban kids trying to learn the basics.

Well, he and most of the BAAU got wrapped up in the site's founding. l0cke and Saka still draw most of the comics and design some of the items I think. It really does seem like a waste of both their talents, but then again everyone running that place is basically swimming in free money so I can't blame them.

The Volcano Gang: Ritzy dressers, look kind of like high-rollers from vegas, dress in red
The Blackbirds: Wear all-black, look rather like thieves- otherwise generally sleek wear
The Black Roses: All women, wearing any variety of skimpy clothing you'd like to put them on- they are a very distracting gang

Why do you need it nailed down? Its a cool setting full of cool locations and dripping with plot hooks, with competent PC's loaded with mad skills. Add an MC to the mix, and the story tells itself.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)17:53 No.9633982
The idea is that it could be any of those things- it is a system, and it is a world. The entire thing is a playground for a GM (MC in gameterms), they can set up areas in where-ever they want, set goals for XP rewards for the players, decide the narrative, perhaps even mark areas on their map as gaps (a la the tony hawk games) for more style when you hop them, it could be a game where you...

...are an up-and coming crew, trying to recruit more punks to your ranks to become a major player

...are in an already-formed gang or crew, taking missions from your superiors to gain respect

...are a punk thrown chaotically into the criminal underground when you get an unmarked cell phone telling you you have a mission

...have been mistakenly dragged to the Big Nasty sewer arena and have to fight and race your way out

...are an am-pro roller who is trying to make a name for himself in official competitions

...don't actually have characters, using 2 to 3 pre-made ones and playing it as a quick, sporadic board-game of capture the flag, deathmatch, whatever...

I don't need it "nailed down", i just want to know the POINT of it. Like, why you would pick this book up over an OGRE rules pamphlet or something. I love the THEME of it, I played those games all the time back in the day, but that doesn't tell me what you actually DO in the game.
Okay, so it's more of a Jet Set themed kitchen-sink kit? That's cool. Are you going to write up rules for some sample scenarios that you mentioned in your post, like giving XP for creative tricks, gaining power through respect, etc.?
I think it would be really cool if you outlined some self-contained "winnable" scenarios in the book, too, even if they're just auxilary examples of how you COULD play the game. Sort of like set "levels" that you participate in that require certain conditions be met in order to win. I realize this is more conductive to a videogame than an RPG, but it could still be fun in the way that one-shot campaigns can be fun, and given the source material I think that the plethora of options you could use for this game could be plentiful.
    >> Anonymous 05/05/10(Wed)18:08 No.9634206
I'm considering mixing this games mechanics with another's. possibly a themed DH game, using this as rules for running/climbing etc: but it may not bee the best idea, not sure.
    >> Nothing Man 05/05/10(Wed)18:10 No.9634239
Yeah, I'll keep that in mind but it seems like I should release that seperately- I just want to get the alpha playtest rules out, and then I can release a PDF of Gangs and Crews, and then probably a scenarios book and if people are really into it I might get some folks to make some neat urban maps for said scenarios.
