Because you're a typical oblivious nerd who makes simple things needlessly complicated and makes complex things overly simple. You then become frustrated because your efforts weren't magically successful despite your lack of discipline or talent.

No, it's indie, I'm working on it right now and I have been for... well only the past 4 days. Those are pages I'm making for a play test to put it through as much stress as quickly as I can to smooth out the edges to the point it's playable.

I'm not DONE with the RPG whatsoever, I don't even have the play test completely written- I'm still workin' on it as we speak.

Alright, right now I primarily need techniques.

Techniques for now are only "101", meaning, they're the bare basics of tricks for the different types. I have no blader techniques. I have no biker techniques.

There are 5 techniques for each class, and then there'll be 5 on the side that will be completely neutral. Each of these different technique trees will have the root of it- Running 101, Blading/Boarding/Biking 101-- you get it. The class starts out with their technique root for free, and other classes' roots are expensive to get.

General has two technique root that EVERYONE gets for free- Offense and Defense. Encompassing punching/kicking and blocking/dodging respectively.

So, for right now, I need boarder/biking tricks. Here's an example of a technique from Parkour:

    CLIMBING 101 [Prereq: Running 101]
Ground Trick: Cat Leap [1 Energy]
If there's a wall within [Muscle] tiles, you can leap onto it and start climbing

    Ground Trick: Wall-up [1 Energy]
Roll Air+Muscle, if you succeed, you can start climbing [Momentum] tiles above yourself

    Fucking sweet, sir.

    >> ZONEbro 05/04/10(Tue)18:02 No.9614441

What should each category be able to do? I think you should have some pretty strong boundaries on what each type can do, so it doesn't just feel like lots of permutations of the same techniques at different levels. We need to make each style feel Really distinct.
    >> Nightmare Work 05/04/10(Tue)18:04 No.9614468
Parkour should focus on getting over, around, and through obstacles. Not very flashy stuff, but it'll do you good.
Skates should focus on style and air, but with lots of chance for fucking up.
    >> Corgi 05/04/10(Tue)18:05 No.9614486

Free running is an emphasis on movement and general freedom. They should have many of their tricks have to deal with taking things by surprise and being able to do things and get places other style can't.

Blades offer some of the mobility of free-running, but sacrifice a fair bit of it for an incredible speed boost.

Boards are generally everything, with possibility of using basic moves from the other styles.

Bikes are all about straight speed, and the power that comes with it.
    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)18:06 No.9614504
Well, each class should have at least 2 style tricks- no-one should be left out of that. Outside of that?

Bladers are all about the aerial and tricks. They're the highest-flying, and generally most stylish.

Boarders are the jack of all trades- they should be good at everything and specialize in nothing. Alright air, alright grinding, alright speed.

Bikers are HIGH SPEED ALL THE TIME. Their tricks should be primarily based on just fucking GOING FASTER at the expense of energy. Max speed? FUCK THAT I'M A BIKER I'LL KEEP ACCELERATING UNTIL I PASS OUT.

Runners are a unique case in that they HAVE no vehicle- They can't grind unless they've got special sneakers (SOAPs) so we'll say they need blading to even DO that. They have air tricks because they're still alright at hopping around and doing crazy shit, but they don't have a lot of the flexibility of others.
    >> Connecticut 05/04/10(Tue)18:07 No.9614523
I think having boarders and bladers as the primary grinding class, with boarders being a bit less flashy but more stable.

Biking could be all about speed and linear combos, with fairly little maneuverability once you got going really fast, but the potential for the most air.

Oh, and in keeping with the general strategy (10* = THPS 20* = JSR 30* = Air Gear)

At 20* they'll be able to do some gravity defying stuff- for instance, grinding up telephone poles and actually GAINING speed as they grind-- 20* is when the characters start to enter the hall of legends, and climb Trophaeum (there is no actual Trophaeum but fuck it I like the word)

Re-postan' Tag ideas. Any problems and just holler.

The Balance has two. One is their war mark and the other is simply their actual mark.

War Mark is of a book with a sword.

The Clan logo is just scales, and they have been known to break those who mess with their logos. both of these are White and Black.

The Volcanos is simply a volocano I believe, with brown and red sprays.

High Flyers is a blueish/Green Stylzied wing seen from the side.

The Inspired - Grayish, silver with light blues. Often the main symbol is of an exclamation point or Light bulb, often switching between the two. It is nearly always part of a larger tag though, and not alone.

The Speedfreaks - A stylized Arrow that is of any coler. What marks it as their tag is how long and how fast they can make the tag. the currant recourd is 94 yards long, of 4 colors and up a hill. The Speed freaks use a small arrow to signify their own turf.

And a dharma wheel for the Shangra-la Spa

You ever heard of the guy that formed the Bodhisattva movement? I don't think he was actually buddhist, he wasn't even a boarder when he started out. He started on a dare, his boarder friend bet that he couldn't get more than a meter into the air in one of the pools. So he skated around for a while, just getting the hang of it, when his friend pushed him into the pool- He stumbled around and when he actually got into the air his pose seemed to change around. He kinda' froze up and hit the bottom of the pool, back-first. He won the bet though- he somehow got over a meter into the air with his crappy posture; He started coming to Shangri-la every day, and, over time, people started coming to watch him skate: that's how the Bodhisattvas started. Because he started getting just INSANE air. People started joining in, hopping into different areas of the pool, skating around different areas of the spa, they started asking the guy who he was, why he was here, all that sort of stuff.

“My name's John. I came here because I learned how it feels to fly.”

By this point he was able to reach about 10 meters into the air, the Skyhigh folks occasionally came down just to check out John and his students. The Bodhisattvas from here on forth grew in a different way from most gangs- The Bodhisattva turf only rarely grows past the Spa because when they race they usually turn down the rewards, insisting the only seek enlighentment through speed. Mostly the only times the Bodhisattvas get a foothold elsewhere is if there's a missionary or converts or... really, It's more of a religion than a gang.

    “Go with wings.”

Grind Trick: 5-0 Grind [1 Energy per 2 turns] [Sustainable] [+1 Style per tick]
"Essentially, pulling a manual on rail."
Every tick you 5-0, you have to make a momentum+balance roll, with a negative modifier of -1 incrementing every tick after the first.

    GRINDS 101 [Prereq: Boarding 101]
Rail Trick: 5-0 Grind [1 Energy per 2 turns] [Sustainable] [+1 Style per tick]
"Essentially, pulling a manual on rail."
Every tick you 5-0, you have to make a momentum+balance roll, with a negative modifier of -1 incrementing every tick after the first.
Rail Trick: Nosegrind [1 Energy per turn] [Sustainable] [+1 Style per tick]
“Riding down it crooked? Seems like suicide.”
Every tick you Nosegrind, you have to make a momentum+balance roll, with a negative modifier of -1 after the first.
When Nosegrinding, you can hop off a rail at any angle.
    >> Connecticut 05/04/10(Tue)19:13 No.9615413

    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)19:18 No.9615494
Well, my idea in that regard is that you can pull a ground or air trick when you're dismounting a rail.

So, say, for instance, someone could flip off a rail onto the ground, or pull a quick grab before landing- or just go normally and then land into a manual.

also, is his game only for xbox? I have an xbox, used to have this game, too, but it's a bit old (of course, the only recent game I played on it was morrowind, so that's not an accurate system evaluation). Is it easy to find in store (common because it came with the xbox for a while or whatever) or do I have to look for it online?

VeloCITY isn't directly related to JSR/JSRF. I'm just blatantly stealing its images and general nuances because it's based off of it.

but, JSR is for dreamcast, JSRF is for Xbox-- the american version of Jet set radio is called Jet Grind Radio.

Well VeloCITY is a game Nothing Man has made
It draws heavy inspiration from the Xbox/Dreamcast games Jet Grind/Jet Set Radio.

For a stylish dismount, you could just take a wager, getting -3 on the roll in return for a style point on success.

I think small, somewhat generic effects should almost all be wagers. Save trick slots for the good stuff.

Also Boarders and Bladers will both be able to Method-air. Boarders will get a few tricks from the other styles because they're the "do everything" men and women.

When you Method-air, it gives you one style, and gives you 1 extra tick in the air. Costs 2 energy, and while it's sustainable, it doesn't give more style over time- it just means you can chain it into other grabs.
    >> ZONEbro 05/04/10(Tue)19:41 No.9615811
Another thought, before I pop out for a bit.

Gang tricks and techniques. Not every gang will have one- you need to be pretty well established to get that kind of group skill.

But, have gang members be able to put points into their gang trick skill or something, unlocking both tricks and special techniques, like the bodhisattva's enlightened air.

Well there's the Yakumos, which are essentially super-selective mobsters chilling in a club that find skilled rollers and runners, giving them Yakumo-phones: not good for calling anyone else, but they pop up with missions, you have the option to accept, ignore or refuse. If you accept, it pops up with a timer. If you refuse, the cell completely wipes itself.

Aside from that there are other criminal factions.

...Basically? Here are all the good adventure hooks:

Players are a new gang, trying to establish their own turf

Players are miscellaneous punks who got themselves trapped in the Sewer Fighting Circuit run by the Big Nasties. They band together to try to break out

Players get Yakumo phones, are grouped together as a task force- get paid nicely for absurdly dangerous situations

Players become a direct target of Punk Squad/Charlie Company/Street Force/The Police as a Whole, try to survive.

An official competition comes to town and the players have to assign their different members to parts of the competition, and/or perform in group events.

The players join a pre-existing gang and get sense on various missions (gangs like the Bodhisattvas would have more esoteric ones- like 'Find your centre at Skyhigh Apartments.')
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)20:01 No.9616092
While Punks are the largest group of rebels in VeloCITY, they are by far not the only one.

What happens when a Punk gets too enchanted with the thrill of speed and gets seduced by the roar of the machine? He becomes a Rider. Riders roam the streets on the motorbikes, no matter what type, from dirt bike tricksters and freaks riding custom Japanese racing bikes to gangers on low-down choppers. Just like Punks the Riders are divided into gangs, whose symbols are often carried highly visible on their clothes, who, just like among the Punks, are fiercely rival. This rivalry is often enough for Riders to ignore Punks, but exceptions occur where gangs of Riders will cruise the city looking for Punks to beat up. There are also exceptions towards the other side, there are several Riders who hang out at places like Momentum and the Pit, showing off with their rides that easily gain speeds that most Punks can just dream about.
Riders also have their own hangouts, such as the Site, an old construction-site for a huge mall just outside town. The construction didn’t get much further than digging up the ground and it has been in Rider hands since then. The mounds of earth have been shaped to hills, ramps and half pipes among rails and constructions of leftover materials. Some really ambitious Riders have even built up a gallery with benches and run a sometimes club at the Site.

You just gave me a fucking amazing idea.

Some illicit dealers (there's one dude who hangs by Wheelers Dealers in specific) sell special paint bullets- They have a small amount of paint in the back, and they get the fronts from specialists- Gangs sometimes order paint bullets, as the tips are plastic shaped specifically to blast the paint in a pattern around them.

Want to challenge someone? Pop them with a rubber bullet that marks them with your gang's tag. It'd be sure as fuck to piss them off enough to accept.

Hey Nothing man. I'm doing a dissertation at the moment due in thurs (FUCK!) but when it's done I'll try and a get a few specific decent VeloCITY art pieces done. Loving this like nothing else.

I've got one question though. Is the place Velo City or is it all one word.

Also, just a few opinions regarding the PDF. From a graphic design perspective I'd suggest toning down the colours somewhat. Perhaps make the main body of the page light grey, beige or white sticking to colours just on the edges. It's just the white text boxes look a little tacky. I'd also stick to a cosnsistent layout with things like headings font size, etc. Just help everything more readable. Perhaps colour coding certain sections. So rules could be one colour, fluff another.

Finally for margins, leave a little room from the text when getting to the edge of the text boxes or background. Possible use a left align as well, it actually works better than centre stuff for readability.

Feel free to completely ignore me man. It's your show. And it's an awesome show indeed.

    28 gangs. /31/ zones.

    BIG NASTIES: Crocodile-themed Boarder thugs
    BODHISATTVAS: Aerial Buddhist Boarders
The Volcano Gang: Wealthy Traceurs that chill in their club mostly
9-BALL: Pool Shark Bikers, pretty chill with the Volcano Gang.
BIBLIOTHEQUE: A mixed gang of folks who like books, and a fair amount of them are magicians- leading to a magic-ish theme.
THE CRAZIES: Imaging the weird masked fuckers from Borderlands. That's them. Mostly bladers, but there's no telling.
STREET FORCE: A subsidiary of the Police, they're officially sanctioned gang-busters who ride any sort of thing, and are almost 100% loose-cannons. Paperwork is for fags.
THE HIGH FLIERS: Residents of Skyhigh Apartments, proud, always wearing the colors of Skyhigh and sometimes even carrying flags- mostly bladers, some runners and boarders, extremely rare bikers
THE BLACKBIRDS: Dirty thieves, but damned good at what they do. Often runners or bladers, as they can get around most security systems with mixed speed and agility.
THE FIREWORKS: Mad scientists, they eschew conventional ideas of speed and put ROCKETS on EVERYTHING, they're an even mix of punk classes
THE FLOWER CHILDREN: Zoned out hippies that often run with cartels and gangs for their fix of psychadelics. Most punks think they give punks a bad name.

    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)20:32 No.9616478
Spice: A shadow gang, almost none of the members ever actually admit to being spicers, and some even are parts of other gangs as well. They only meet up through a forum, there's no hierarchy, just the admin and how fucking awesome the individuals' tricks are.
The Valdez Crew: Often baristas or some such in real life, caffeine junkies who chill out in coffee shops and are one of the few gangs the police are okay with- because they often help out the community in any legal way they can. A varied lot.
The Inspired: Mostly bikers, they're pure professionalists mostly not concerning themselves with turf- they try to get high scores in official contests and often arrange contests themselves. They value discipline and practice.
The Black Roses: Mostly Bladers and Runners, imagine Charlie's Angels on blades and you're not far off: all women, all dressed in surprisingly revealing outfits, anywhere from sleek body suits to frilly gothic lolita suits or even playboy bunny outfits. Incidentally, most gangs find it hard to focus in races against them.
De Cuisine: Another good guy gang, they organize efforts for soup kitchens and such to feed the destitute in the city: They put on speed shows and run competitions for charity, and most are pretty good cooks, thus the name. They're varied.
Speedfreaks: They're one step past punk and not quite professional racers. They're not quite crazies, not quite anything else: they're addicts to speed. They got as fast as possible on anything they can get their hands on, often being on good terms with the Fireworks for their tech being able to often do just that.

Rozenkrantz: are creepy motherfuckers who know it. Goths and freaks, they hide around the abandoned theme park and in the shadows most everywhere, getting their shits and giggles by scaring the aforementioned shit out of other riders. Dark pranksters, all bladers.
The Westborough Mall Hooligans: Techincally not a gang, since new folks can't join them: They're a small gang of skateboarders that are named after a hellraising stunt they pulled in Westborough. It took months to clean it all up. They roam around, generally wrecking up everyones' shit with tricks, filming the result, and posting it online.
PunkSquad: PunkSquad is founded by a group of Army Cadets, with a distinct military organization and similiarly spartan discipline. They aren't actually a gang, they're gang-busters. Not sanctioned by street-force: but they have guns. And they are a massive threat with their tendency to not leave tags where they've hit.

Charlie Company: The failures and dredges of Punk Squad formed Charlie Company, Punk Squad recognizes them as just another gang to bust: literal urban warfare is not fun to get caught in the crossfire of. Charlie Company is the more liked of the two, as they will cooperate with gangs if the greater good requires it, and they only use less-lethal weaponry when they do attack gangs.
The Balance: Odd in that they're non-violent, but not really charitable. They often roll around in whatever kind of vehicle with cameras handy. They're the historians- they try to exercise a trust of honor between the other gangs, and most either respect their system, or are extremely suspicious of it and begrudgingly accept it- PunkSquad adamantly refuse to recognize The Balance as anything more than some stray punks... they still have to play by their rules, though. Or else.
The Sandmen: A 'board gang, they roll around at night wearing gas masks, fedoras and trenchcoats. They ride around tagging certain people, rather than places, with no apparent rhyme or reason.
The Neons: An absolutely minor gang of ravers that use rollerblades as an extension of their grand dance over the city. You will see no gang more glowy. Except for maybe...
Urban Tribals: Mostly homeless punks that hang around a big place that they call the great temple, they are unique in that no matter what vehicle they use, they perform tricks with their staffs. Often they wear rag-like clothes and bandages, but they always have tattoos, it's their marker. Most are glow-in-the-dark, and any of their sprayed tags are glow-in-the-dark as well.

Given how this is working, I'll probably end up just making the stencils themselves and seeing how they look on a wall. I know a few abandoned places where I ought to be able to pull it off, and failing that, I can just use plywood.

Also, deep color version, which is easiest on the internet eyes.

alright, let me point out some:
    >The Valdez Crew: Often baristas or some such in real life, caffeine junkies who chill out in coffee shops and are one of the few gangs the police are okay with- because they often help out the community in any legal way they can. A varied lot.
they sound to me like fucking boyscouts. Average joe who drinks a lot of coffee and likes to help the community decided to form a gang!
    >The Westborough Mall Hooligans: Techincally not a gang, since new folks can't join them: They're a small gang of skateboarders that are named after a hellraising stunt they pulled in Westborough. It took months to clean it all up. They roam around, generally wrecking up everyones' shit with tricks, filming the result, and posting it online.
some more silly kids who don't really fit in with the scheme. it also makes it seem a lot more "local" if you know what I mean
    >9-BALL: Pool Shark Bikers, pretty chill with the Volcano Gang.

    Legendary Punk - 6-Star General

The Leader of the Punksquad and one of the most feared Punks in Velo, there are countless rumours about 6-Star floating about the city. Some say he gained leadership of the gang by defeating all the previous leaders all at once. Some claim he is a military experiment gone wrong, others say it was merely far to successful. They say he cannot be killed by bullets, that he can punch through concrete walls and shred Cars with his Skates.

Most of these are likely just fanciful fabrications, but within each there is at least a grain of truth. What is known for sure is that, after 6-Stars ascent to leadership, the previous leader and his subordinates vanished from the City. His physical strength and fighting skills, although often exaggerated, are still fearsome, enough that even the Cops are afraid to challenge him directly. But what makes him truly dangerous is his brain, for 6-Star is a master of tactics, as evidenced by the Squads recent string of victories over their enemies.

Very few punks, even within the Squad, have ever met 6-Star. He is known to be a huge man of imposing build, and a skilled Skater, but few know his face well enough to describe it, and almost nothing is known of his history. Nevertheless, there are only a handful of Punks in the city who would dare to challenge him on the Streets.
    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)21:03 No.9616903
I agree that the hooligans should be in punks of note instead, it's just what was in the list of gangs for some reason.

The Valdez Crew and 9-Ball both had like 1 or 2 lines in the actual list so I improvised from there- they aren't bad ideas, they're just poorly fucking done- I think 9-Ball could just be like, one person in the Volcano Club though.
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:03 No.9616904
Do you mean "Starting Line"? Cause that's a radio station that specialises in keeping track of contests, showdowns and Events between punks in the city and broadcasting them.

Starting Line; Keeps you in the Know, so you don't Miss the Show
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:04 No.9616918
    >The Balance: Odd in that they're non-violent, but not really charitable. Or else.
I don't know, I just don't like the notion of "nice gangs". Whenever I think of gangs, the only variation I think of is whether or not they're an honorable gang. these people sound like more of a book club

In regard to the Valdez Crew, a few suggestions came up in previous threads. Perhaps they'd be better off like this:
A crew of mostly bladers who run rackets from out of the Docks district. They're the go-to group for anything being smuggled into the city from the South Americas. Heavy latin american theme, strong love of coffee.

Think closer to a somewhat lax totalitarian goverment that gets a kick out of keeping track of everything. They know just about everything that is happening in the city, because if they catch a big move that they didn't know about ahead of time, then bad things are gonna happen to you.

from the description they sound really two dimensional and useless for anything other then "OMG RANDUM ENCOUNTER".

my first impressions may be a little unfair, though, as a big part of street gangs is their power status (as gang life is more often then not a power struggle, for control; that's also why good gangs don't strike it with me) and relations with other gangs

It's best to think of gangs in this as their own little empires.

This nice nation might help out the people as a whole, including those of other empires- some empires might take offense to this as draining of their authority, whereas some of the others will offer them defense for their charitable actions. It's all a matter of the relations- in this case, De Cuisine is almost tied with Urban Tribal, since Urban Tribal gets food from De Cuisine- and the tribals will wreck your shit with a staff to the neck if you try to mess with De Cuisine.

That and gang means a group of people all doing the same thing in this case. Just because they are "good" doesn't mean they aren't a gang.

Though, I don't believe there are any that fit the critera of good I believe you are thinking of. That being a paladin that stops evil r whatever.

Good for gangs is selling the proper gear to shred through the city, or making sure things don't go too far, or making that 50 foot drop without a drop in speed.

It is by default assumed that the players are forming their own new, fresh-faced gang. (Even the GGs only had Corn, Gum, Yoyo and Beat starting out.)

And, in the case they were their own personal game, I could always implement it that when the leader of the gang hits 201 grade, they can design a signature trick for their gang- as argued out with the MC, of course
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:16 No.9617077
if what I think you're saying is true, one of the big reasons is I can't understand De Cuisine being able to hold up an entire section of a city with their own "special talents", while being surrounded by gangs that would easily take it from them. It would probably help if you marked which gangs were "major" and which gangs were just street gangs that, maybe, controlled a wedge or a block or two. It can't possibly be Mr. Good Intentions being able to hold his own pacifistic gang in a city like this.
actually, it would help if we had a map (really, just a crude one will do)

    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)21:18 No.9617098
    The design scheme is:

100 Grade = Tony Hawk Pro Skater, only slightly above realism levels
200 Grade = Jet Set Radio, grind up telephone rails, actually GAIN speed while grinding by just swapping tricks out extremely fast
300 Grade = Air Gear, ride up walls by spinning your body around fast enough, by this point you'll have enough to afford dynamic gear (quick burst engines in the vehicles- or parkour boots specifically designed with jump packs), kick reality to the curb and make 0.00000000001%, 100%!
    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)21:19 No.9617113
Yeah, I was going to split it into like, a maximum of 7 major gangs- the rest are minor crews. In fact, that's a good method of terminology, big ones = gangs, small ones = crews

So the players would start off as a crew. I like it.

so what about the sewer systems?
there are some gangs that would fit very well into sewer life and could help clear up confusion of street gangs VS mafia-mentality gangs
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:19 No.9617125

You need to remember that this is like Jet Set Radio Future. These gangs ride into an area, tag everything in graffiti, and then ride off to go do awesome tricks and listen to loud music elsewhere. They probably only actually have like one base of operation each, but they just have really expansive territory. The only really militant ones, it seems like, are the pseudo law enforcement ones.

    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:22 No.9617156

I think you're thinking in to violent terms. This is a universe where disputes are just as likely to be resolved by who can bust out the best trick combo, catch the best air, win a race or beatboxing as they are with direct violence. Big Nasties [Sewers/Themepark at Night], Rozenkrantz [Themepark], Bodhisattavas [Shangri-La], The Volcano Gang [Mt. Vulcan], 9-Ball [none], Bibliotheque [St Altitude's Archives], The Crazies [Peak Clinic?/Supersonic Tech], High Fliers [Skyhigh Apartments], Blackbirds [none], Fireworks [Warehouse District], Flower Children [none], Spice [none], Deadmen [Barrios/The Walled City?], The Inspired [Central City?], Black Roses [none], De Cuisine [none], Guerrillas? I also have a list of the named districts, but they lack descriptions so there's not as much flavour. It was mainly to try and picture how the city would fit together- for instance, Carver Canyon. with Carver falls at the high end near the drained reservoir (where the club Momentum is located), the warehouse district over the Carver Bridge, and the Docks on one side of the rivermouth and Little Venice further down the coast.

What nothing Man called crews, would likely not have a super amount of motivation, but the gangs should really have a sort of goal or focus, just to set them apart, even if it's just survival. Like minded individuals who would all agree that they could run the city better then anyone else, so they set out for political dominance, exalting their members into positions, or something like that. just a reason to be a gang other then being a gang.

I'd guess the Black Roses would hang around high-end shopping districts with all the really expensive fashion stores and such.

Also, the Urban Tribals' grand temple is a pretty vague location, as it's just a huge stepped inlet to the storm drains that the Tribals have colonised. What area of the city is it in?

They can have tubes that run out of the paintpacks on their backs and up under their hands. In their hands can be little grips that control the color, and flow of the paint. They could even change the spread that way. Obviously bikes would be mounted with turrets, and skateboarders probably wouldn't be able to use them.

Right, I guess I pictured the Barrios as sort of clustered and narrow, like the inside of the walled city is supposed to be.
I like the idea of a graveyard or burial ground for punks who were "in-tune with the soul of the street", and are laid to rest in a peaceful, quiet garden somewhere. But I'd like to see it as neutral, even sacrosanct- You do not Tag here. You do not 'Hang Out' here. You do not bring your conflict here. It serves as a reminder to all punks. Of where they came from... and where they all go. Even the Big Nasties, violent and thuggish as they are, have some respect for the dead.
Of course, every now and then some young, cocky upstarts will try and be overly dramatic about it- the ill-fated 'Vampires' crew from Big Town are one such taint-, and they'll learn the hard way that even if you dodge the wrath of the gravediggers, the rest of the city will seem to turn on you.
    >> Anonymous 05/04/10(Tue)21:57 No.9617765
    Surprisingly appropriate, I like it!

In terms of what the grand temple looks like, it's like the Tokyo storm drains, but with massive sloping steps down towards the middle where the main tunnel runs in and out. Largely overgrown, and with a maze of metal catwalks up above the ground, which is where the Tribals live, building houses out of random junk and lit by candles, flashlights, and barrels of burning garbage.

And of course, nearly every inch of the walls all the way up to the ceiling covered in the hand-painted glow-in-the-dark tags of the Tribals.

I could see the graveyard for punks being in the barrio district, with the Deadmen frequently spotted nearby... maybe in the bottom of an empty storm drain, with walls on either side and a grating over the top, partially overrun with greenery. But light still filters through in shafts, giving the whole place a tranquil feel. Placing it in a ruined storm drain also makes it accessible for the Underground gangs/Urban Tribals, who probably hold the place in high regard as well.

Maybe if a gang is entitled to bury their members in the Graveyard, either through being in touch with the 'Soul of the Street', or performing some great act- be it an incredible stunt, forming a solid reputation (ill or good) or even a heroic act, the Deadmen and the gravedigger will allow them to add their tag to the walls of the drain. The symbolism is twofold- it signifies that a gang has earned its place here, and it means that the spirit of the Gang will watch over it's fallen members.

Maybe occasionally one of the Urban Tribals presides over a burial- after all, the greatest among them are inextricably intertwined with the spirit of the streets.
A crew or gang must earn the right to bury their fallen in the Graveyard. The conditions are deliberately vague, and the final say goes to the gravekeepers. The Deadmen in the district serve as the enforcers for the gravekeeper out of tradition. While noone is certain exactly what conditions a crew has to meet before they're allowed to add their tag to the Graveyard Wall (so that the spirit of their gang will watch over the resting place of all worthy punks), theories range from performing some heroic deed for the good of the city, to being known for insane stunts and exemplifying the abilities of the punks, to just being stylish. Once a gang has built up a solid enough reputation though, good or bad, odds are they'll get a visit from a Deadman and later that day a new tag will grace the walls.
Hell, even the Big Nasties' tag can be seen amongst the logos, so the speculation can get a little confusing.

I think it'll less require detailed maps, more an evocative description by the MC. As long as the trick Sounds awesome, is feasible based on the punks capabilities, and fits in with the theme and components of the area, its probably okay to let it slide, as long as the rolls come together.

Trying to nail everything down for every area will just overcomplicate things, and also mean that, eventually, places will get dull. Leaving it vague you can always find, and do, something new.
    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)23:14 No.9618956
You say that, but the only REQUIRED detail for maps would be placement of buildings and numerous urban features- any edge can be a rail, any thing that would reasonably under 2 meters tall would be an obstruction traceurs can hop over, height could be entirely fiat, and I haven't worked ramps out yet but there'll only be two kinds of those, and once again it could work as fiat- pretty much you just need a fairly fleshed out urban scene.

I'll be extremely happy if I'm capable of creating a game where the emphasis of a map is for interest of use rather than just background.

Skateboard has Sneakers for braking because come on what on a board effects braking? what? nothing.

Here's a quick sketch of how I envisioned the graveyard. Imagine the walls are covered in different gang signs, though.

They get only the standard equipment everyone can use: Clothes, Handwear, Phone, Headset, Footwear.

looks good, but it needs more blades and sneakers hung over headstones. maybe if the headstones looked more improvised, too. I like the environment, though

Are skateboards actually faster than rollerblades? It seems like they could get going to about the same speed.

Yeah, it would be much more detailed if I didn't have such a short attention span.
    >> Nothing Man 05/04/10(Tue)23:32 No.9619258
Yeah, I should even them both out to 6

I am greatly interested in some playtesting here. If anyone wants to do something over OpenRPG, or IRC, I'd be happy to roll up a charactr and groove out.

I'm a whore for Jet Set.

    >> Blank 05/04/10(Tue)23:37 No.9619343
I could probably playtest too but it appears that the thread is autosaging.
Aw, I like you, guy. Here, have some spraycans. If one of those preening Volcano Gangers comes around looking for it... well, you didn't get it from me.
    >> ZONEbro 05/04/10(Tue)23:38 No.9619347
Hmm... its something to check in the playtests, but I worry that we're getting too far into some of the nitty gritty details of the system. While its all cool, and fun to design, I can see this as a game which could Really suffer from the loss of flow and momentum when you have to check a wording or look up a rule, or even a dispute over interpretation of a map. I've had similar issues seriously daunt previous 'brews.

Just something to keep in mind, is all, be wary of over detail and unstreamlined mechanics. If its more fun to design than to play, something's gone wrong somewhere.
