    >CURRENT STATUS<

You are standing on top of a tall hill just in front of Fortress Rame, far from home, facing down thousands of Forusian infantry and their infernal machines. Five hundred archers line the battlements behind you, taking shots at retreating stragglers. Seven hundred spearmen, swordsmen, and cavalry are massed behind the fortress gates, awaiting the call to action.

Your current leader, Erivrus, the tallest human you know, accompanies three swordsmen and four mages ahead of you, casting bolts of energy into the best targets and stabbing the rest in the face. You have personally slain hundreds of men and single-handedly taken six siege engines out of action. The enemy army has stopped advancing, its infantry parting to the sides while re-absorbing the remnants of the failed charge. Mages buried in every squad cast bolts and blasts of fire in your direction, the extreme range playing merry hell with their accuracy.

Coming straight up the middle are three siege towers, nearly everything behind them sheathed in a rolling ash cloud. Whatever's coming, it isn't good.

Your tower shield is heavily damaged, its front covered with a thick coat of ice to preserve its strength. Your flail remains unused, your crossbow still has two full magazines of MS-tip bolts, and your Storm Knives have full charges. Little of your power has been expended, though your alchemy pendant is responding sluggishly.

    Orders?

SubDM. That wasn't the whole army? That was just a charge? Shiiiiiiiiiii......
    1. I was hoping we'd routed them and could cut them down while they were retreating.
    2. We caught them with their pants down. They weren't just unprepared for our magical apocalypse, they were unprepared for any kind of strong response- they were very sluggish counterattacking. Were they going for a coup de main and didn't know about the god network and their teleporting skills?
    3. Good to know Erivrus's name, though 'the tall man' was a cool appellation.
    4. More detailed drawing on the fortress/ nearby environs? Is it all rolling hills, or is this a bunch of hills in the middle of a plain or what have you?
    5. I'll repeat my earlier comment- any alchemists handy to repair the tower shield? Otherwise just toss long-range nukes- and lay off the alchemy on account of the sluggish pendant.

    1. The forward elements are still retreating, but the main bulk of the army remains.

    2. It seems that they were expecting to face only the fortress's regular defenders, not a Frost Giant mage.

    4. I'm afraid I don't do very well with topography. The area around the fortress is hilly, but the land flattens out ahead. Most of this area is plains.

    5. No dedicated alchemists. The four mages seem to work as a team, using what you would call light magic.

Done. Drawing on your inward energy instead of the pendant's formidable capacity, you transmute some of the ice to steel, filling in the holes and twisting the bent portions until the shield reforms in the way you wish. It is still covered in about two inches of ice, but will now hold up to sustained fire.

Standing atop the hill, your newly-repaired shield blocking all attempts to silence you, you continue the assault, bringing the shapes of your mind into physical existence.

    >12

A dozen translucent diamonds flash into being just in front of the ash cloud, detonating as one. Icy splinters fill the air, cascading into the ashes and being lost from your sight, and ripping into the unarmored rears of the three defending towers.

    >6

A gigantic fireball impacts your shield, evaporating its ice coating and throwing you off-balance, making your second attack go wild. Grenades appear at the far edge of the army's flank, exploding small craters in the very threatening dirt.

    >>9274900
At the moment, the four mages are assisting the swordsmen with dispatching the wounded and retreating. They are conserving power, manifesting short, blazing white knives which tear through flesh. All four are shielded against attack, warding off bolts of iron and magic with bright fields of yellow. The fortress ballistas remain silent.

    >though your alchemy pendant is responding sluggishly.
Damn, I was going to suggest transmuting lots of shit.
For instance, transmuting some of the dirt six to eight feet beneath the surface into iron spikes, and then transmuting a thin layer of something light and weak like aluminum in a cylinder around the pikes (the cylinder should end more than a little beneath the surface), and then transmuting all the dirt contained within the cylinder into air, so that when someone steps in the middle of the trap the aluminum seal will be broke, the pressurized air will rush out, and then everyone standing on the trap will fall into the spikes.
But I'm guessing that the amulet might BREAK or something if we tried that much fancy transmuting.

Pressing your hands to the ground behind the shield, you summon your alchemical power, hoping you have enough stamina to limit the drain on the pendant. The earth moves beneath you, its substance hearing your order clearly.

    >8,1

Reddish mud bleeds up through small cracks in the dirt, flowing down the hill like rivers of clotting blood. The iron refuses to coalesce as your mind wavers, unable to bring the materials together. Shaking your head for a moment, you try again, steeling yourself against failure.

    >16

Success. The rivers reverse course, converging into a great pool of mud that pulls itself into a sphere, solidifying instantly. Without a moment to lose, you take hold of the iron shot and whip it around, giving it a nice spin.

It curves in the air, hitting the rightmost siege tower at an angle and tearing straight through it, striking the center tower on the flank and breaking that apart as well. The two towers, internal supports shredded and destroyed, are cut in half, their tops falling backwards into the ash cloud, shedding armor and pieces of wood.

An eyeless, armor-covered face pokes out, extending a steel-plated jaw and exposing rows upon rows of silvered teeth, a meat grinder that roars like thunder. The great beast crushes the last tower with its hind leg, bringing itself out of the cloud and letting you see the full extent of its bulk.

Twice your height, standing hunched over on four limbs, its back supporting a wooden tower just behind the largest ballista you've ever seen.

“Back! Back!” shouts Erivrus, running toward you at full speed. The mages have begun their chant anew, their once-calm faces broken by fear. The archers have ceased firing. The entire Forusian army is splitting off to the sides, giving the beast room to maneuver.

The logical position for a brain is around the eyes, since eyes involve so much nerve tissue, but it could have a hindbrain that is capable of ordering the body about (like some Stegosaurids have been theorized as having), or a decentralized nervous system like a cockroach.
Nevertheless, we should put the grenades in around the eyes, because if they blow properly the eyes will probably be severely damaged and the creature will be in incredible agony, which could send it into a panic.
The results might be much like making an enemy's war elephants run amok in M2: Total War.

Magma dribbles from between its teeth as it rears up, firing the contents of its stomach like a flesh-born cannon. A river of red-orange rock splashes against the hill, reaching your companions before you can react.

    >3

The four mages deepen their chant, calling the shield of light into being. But it is not enough. The raging flow bursts through it, liquefying them all as Erirvrus and the swordsmen dive aside. Moving hastily back, you almost tumble down the back of the hill, holding your shield fast against the beast's attack. In moments, the steel melts, forcing you to let go, and the steaming river washes around your feet, unable to penetrate your Magma Steel armor.

Hot rock covers the hill, flowing down and around it like a moat. It laps against the fortress wall, eager to add the solid stones to its glowing stream.

The first three detonate just inside the beast's jaw, blowing out a whole section of bone and sending it reeling, trying to support its cracking jaw with one hand while steadying itself with the other, magma curling around its lips and dripping into the wound.

The next five appear inside its neck, detonating in a ring and tearing vast amounts of tissue from its haggard body. Ragged strips of muscle fall and dangle from the jagged slice, pink blood mingling with orange rock as the creature's neck gives way completely, letting the magma from its stomach drain directly onto the ground.

A great horn sounds from the tower atop the beast as it crumples into the dirt with a dying screech, streaming all manner of fluids from its mouth. The ash cloud begins to rotate, whipping itself into a black whirlwind. The ballista turns on its mount, gripping you in its iron sights.

Yeah, OR we could get a hilariously low roll and the lava could be under sufficient pressure to shoot across the battlefield and strike the tower under normal circumstances, so any plug would seal the thing shut for maybe .1 seconds before enough pressure built up to fire it as a solid shot with the armor penetration that that implies, which will create a hole that will then be filled with lava, like an incendiary missile that explodes only after it has already penetrated it's target instead of before, allowing said lava to actually do more damage than it normally would.

My advice is to make the Ash Beast's THROAT colder than the lava surrounding it hopefully negating whatever allows it to carry such molten liquids.

Ash Beast's colder throat cracks and might weaken it enough for decapitating Ice Grenade.

HOWEVER, I don't know the exact thread but when we fought a large fire elemental back in butch Maya 1.0 the thing was able to regenerate it's destroyed noggin without impacting it's capacity to launch fiery death.

Here's hoping Ash Beasts work differently than Fire Elementals.

TLDR: We're trading magic artillery rounds with Balrog equivalent.

Ballistas can be quickly and fairly accurately aimed in a left-right manner, but leave much to be desired when they have to change aim vertically.
So it would really help us out if we could start flying like Superman.

On a serious note, they're going to get to shoot that thing at us even if we run, and there's still a pool of lava betweeen us and the tower, so we need to kill these fucks with an ice laser or something before we do anything else.

Resolving that the Forusians can't hit what they can't see, you induce the air itself to move at your whim, covering the top of the hill in a whirling mass of thick fog as you draw vapor into the tiny storm. Sliding quickly down the hill, your escape concealed by the storm, you slog through the magma moat, reaching the wall.

In the distance, the ballista fires, impaling the hill with a massive bolt, sending a shower of dirt and rock in all directions as the steel tip penetrates the wall, cracking the face of it. Fortunately, it doesn't go penetrate more than a foot or so, and you circle the wall, bringing the siege-beast's corpse back into view.

It's still down, which takes a load off your mind. The ballista is being reloaded, but it's still pointed at the remains of the hill. Behind the gigantic, ashen corpse, the dark cloud spins faster and faster, reaching up into the sky. The army has split into two columns, both holding position at either side of the cloud.

Taking aim, you decide to end this as quickly as possible. After nearly getting washed away by a river of magma, you really don't want to drag any of this out.

    >7

Holding your right gauntlet out in front, steadying it with your other hand, you fire, raking a thin white beam across the ballista mount, freezing its crew and ammunition solid. The tower horn is sounding again and again, blasting like a loudspeaker. A quick glance confirms that Erivrus is leaning over the battlements, shouting at the top of his lungs.

“Get in! Get in! Get behind the walls!”

Circling around the fortress, as quickly as you can, you reach the great iron gates at the entrance, squeezing through the opening and helping the beleaguered spearmen behind it close it tightly, barring it. Erivrus shouts for you to duck and cover as he runs out of one of the towers, and you notice that every single man in the base has either huddled beneath the battlements or inside a tower.

It begins to rain. The sky above the fortress darkens with incredible speed, pouring out gray, foul-smelling water that patters down over the courtyard, splashing against the battlements. You place yourself by your leader, barely getting yourself beneath the overhang that shields the others. In moments, the heavens are letting out a torrential rain, driving the sooty water into the base with increasing ferocity.

Lightning flashes in the black clouds. Thunder cascades around you, shaking the very earth. You can still hear the horn, blaring constantly, ever louder.

Erivrus flips the visor of his helmet open with a horrible scraping sound. His gleaming eyes are filled with fear.

Remaking the tower shield might not be the best possible use of our ice magic and transmutation.

Maybe we could make a tank-sized ballista of our own and mount it on top of the tower. And then shoot giant ballista-sized exploding ice bolts, like we do with our crossbow. And after we run out of ice we could still do some transmutation to get metal bolts, which we would electrify with our gauntlets. That'll show 'em. That'll show EVERYONE. Leaving the pessimistic, fearful man behind, you climb the battlements, braving the wind and rain, readying your mind. As you reach the top, you look around, seeing that the entire fortress is encircled by a spinning wall of black fog, extending up as far as you can see. You can see nothing, not the faintest light, through the wall. But you can still hear.

Centering on the sound of the horn, you take your firing position, and summon your energy.

    >11

You sweep a bright white beam across the wall, praying that it strikes the horn.

Moments after you cease firing, the sound ceases. The wall dissipates, evaporating into nothing, like it was never there. The sky remains dark, but the fog begins to clear. In a minute, the hail has become a light drizzle, and you can see all the way to the enemy lines.

The corpse, along with the tower, remain. The rows and rows of infantry are untouched. The ash cloud behind the defeated beast is clearing.

Erivrus and the three swordsmen join you on the battlements. The soldiers, soaked and shaken, begin to climb as well, taking up their previous positions. A tiny sliver of sunlight makes it through the clouds above, passing over your head before disappearing. You ready your crossbow, setting it in the notch on your new shield. You feel tired, but you push your fatigue aside. No time for that now.

The cloud sweeps upward, curving about itself and disappearing, revealing the full extent of the enemy force. Thousands upon thousands, stretching back in two vast columns, interspersed with siege engines of various kinds.

But the center holds your eye. The center, just in front of the felled and bleeding beast, where a tiny light glows between the two steadfast columns. It expands, brightening, and then bursts, unveiling three beings.

To either side, golems, hunched and breathing heavily, their flesh crudely connected to limbs of living rock, skin blackened and burned. Between them, a giant, cloaked and hooded, about your size, with thin wisps of smoke trailing from the places where his eyes should be.

“Greetings,” he says, his voice like mountains grinding against each other. “I will ease your passing into hell. Do not resist.”

The MS-tipped projectile hurtles directly at the giant's head, hitting dead-center and tearing out the back of his hood, dragging it down as a stream of pink blood soaks his robe. He keeps moving, laughing.

The wound seals before your eyes, closing the strike-point with tar-black skin. The giant's eyes boil with red and orange, still trailing smoke. He raises his spear, twisting his arm back.

The giant's chest balloons out, bursting apart as an ice grenade detonates inside his rib cage, tearing his heart into bloody chunks and scattering his charred, shattered bones upon the ground. He falls, a look of amusement frozen on his face as his spine comes apart, releasing his head to roll against a boulder, still smoking from the eyes.

    Next.

    >16

Calling as much power as you dare, you try one of your old tricks: The ice that spreads like fire. With the barest of twitches you gift both of the golems with a small patch of ice in the middle of their chests, ice which reaches across their shoulders and up their necks, forcing them to stop. Tearing at their own flesh with burning hands, the horrible things choke and sputter as the ice leeches into their throats, cutting off their air.

“Now!” You shout, pointing to the leftmost abomination.

At your order, the ballistas target the left golem, letting their enormous bolts fly. Two glance off the its shoulders, splitting apart and doing no damage, but the last impales it straight through the chest, dragging its lungs out of its body.

It dies clutching the bloody wound, gurgling and falling forward, face-down in the dirt.

You glance back at the fortress defenders, most of them cowering in corners or praying. Words issue forth from your mouth, many of them profane. You urge them to fight, not for themselves, but for their nation. For their families. For all that would sooner die than see Forus take their homes.

    >20

The men... rise. They take up their weapons. They shake off the rain. They bare their teeth, look to you, and shout, all as one. “For Perin!”

Turning quickly, you target the remaining golem, scrambling to remove the ice. You resolve to put it out of its misery.

    >2

You hit the battlement on one knee, breathing hard, finding it hard to concentrate. The last few attacks must have taken more out of you than you thought. Fortunately, the ballistas are there to finish the job.

There is a sharp yelp, and the other golem is dispatched. The archers are climbing. The footsoldiers and cavalry are moving back to their squads.

Your eyes snap back to the battlefield. The giant is getting back up. His eyes smolder with humor as he sets his head back on his shoulders, twisting it a bit and sighing as it re-seats itself. He cracks his neck for good measure.

“You killed my bodyguards,” he says, looking straight at you, “I'm pleased. I'll have you all to myself.”

Twin beams of light erupt from the giant's eyes, sweeping across the fortress walls. You dive for cover, taking the two swordsmen near you down with you.

    >14

The fastest archers are all incinerated. Five of the seven ballistas are destroyed, immolated along with the tops of their towers. A neat, rectangular hole is cut straight into the wall beneath you, the perfect size for a giant.

He advances, quickly this time, summoning another spear. Given faith by your rousing speech, cavalry and spearmen are rushing into the gap, pouring out of the fortress as the archers range their bows, preparing to fire. Crews are arming the last two ballistas, swinging them into position.

The giant turns, swarmed from all directions by angry, well-armed men of Perin. He keeps laughing, even as the arrows turn to ash, his blackened body healing the empty wounds in seconds. He raises his hands, dropping the swords.

“I have no choice,” he sneers, “I SURRENDER!”

Everyone around him is engulfed in flame. Weapons and armor melt in seconds, pooling on the courtyard floor. Flesh and bones pull apart and are incinerated, cast to the wind. You drop down from the battlement, repeating the contact incantation, building all the power you can hope to hold.

“It's not going to work!” the giant shouts, walking toward you, his body now completely covered in flame. You shout for the soldiers to keep their distance, and they oblige, letting you face this enemy on your own. Giant against giant. Frost against flame.

    You've had it.

    >20

Pointing both gauntlets forward, you unload everything you have. All of your hate. All of your rage. Everything.

An icy wind, biting with transparent jaws, sweeps the flames away, drawing them up and out. The giant launches forward, black hands balled into fists. You hit him with a bolt of lightning.

Boom! Boom! Blasts of thunder send the soldiers reeling back as you press on, giving it all you've got. Massive, crackling waves of electricity penetrate his flesh, washing over him, forcing his muscles to clench. His jaw clamps down, cracking his teeth as you hit him again and again.

You reach the enemy, shoving your right hand directly into his chest, parting the skin with a blade of ice. His body is racked with electric fire, forcing every nerve, every muscle, every cell to feel what you are doing. With the last ounce of magical strength in your body, you end him.

    “Begone.”

The giant... evaporates, his very substance transforming into ash with a bright, brilliant flash. You drop, exhausted, to the courtyard floor, palms smoking as residual charge leaves your gauntlets. It is done.

The first to your side is Erivrus, his gloved hands wrapping around your still-hot armor as he tries to help you up.

“I'm sorry, I'm sorry,” he whispers, as the others rush to his aid.

The defenders group around you, helping you up. They support you, as you climb, step by step, to the top of the battlements. They are with you, each step of the way, filling the wall as you rise.

    You hold up your fist.

The Forusian army breaks, in full retreat. They run for their lives, abandoning the siege engines, leaving a thousand bodies and an eviscerated beast of hell in their wake.

You have beaten them. Erivrus, after asking, tells the men your name.

You black out to the sound of “Maya! Maya! Maya!”, filling your ears.

I just didn't see where you said it was the last post for the day. It's a good a spot to stop.

But GRR, I wanna see where the rest of the Forusian army is, on the Perrin BIG BOARD. You know they've gotta have a room that looks like the giant screen from Wargames, only powered with magic'n'shit. Positions of armies, incoming long-range magic nukes. We're not a general, but we just got a ticket to the top. They can deny us that, and I wouldn't act like a bitch if they did, but I have an inkling we're about to sit on the highest counsels.

Bleeding Sun tells Forus it can get them into Perin, also there's this giant he want's taken care of.

    Forus, desperate, agrees.

We blow up the assaulting army.

Forus, thinking this is the giant the Sun was talking about, calls in it's biggest gun.

Big gun gets turned into ash, entire army routs against a fort that should have been little more than a speed bump.

Bleeding Sun says "Okay, I got another idea!"

Forus tells him to fuck off.

You killed many more with grenades than you did with lasers. Off course, lasers don't tend to make solid shrapnel. Unless you used one to freeze people, and then something else to shatter them.
