    Warhammer Fantasy Battle question /tg/.

Would an army mostly made up of Goblin Wolf Riders with shortbows work, or die horribly?
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:03 No.8971843
    Yep
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:06 No.8971862
    it would die horribly...
    >> hamster boy 04/04/10(Sun)09:06 No.8971866
Pros - fast and agile, potential for funny models.

cons - no real stopping power, low Leadership.

i guess you could augment with a giant and a few chariots, but it would still be an uphill battle.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:07 No.8971875
    very uphill :-)
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:10 No.8971902
Is there any way to make a goblin army which isn't a painful uphill struggle though? I keep on looking through the goblin units and trying to figure one out, but it just isn't coming to me.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:13 No.8971934
Very fun on quite low point scenarised battle.

its a hoardy, low Ld mess. the new codex is coming, but dont expect miracles.

If i HAD to do it, i would take large blocks (25-30) of spear and shield nightgobbos, with 3 fanatics each, several spear chukkas, large units of gobbos with bows, 2 small units of wolf riders (for diversions) 2-3 chariots (keep the together), max heroes, and squig hoppers.

sorry, and a giant. take a giant, use it in conjunction with a spear unit.

I was under the impression that Squig Hoppers were too unpredictable to use.

No. No there isn't. The guy who wrote the thing actually confirmed this at one point.

Goblin Wolf Riders with shortbows are great in small groups of 5 with just musicians. They can screw up marching and take out some warmachines. An all Goblin army will get raped badly though. You must use Orcs and even then don't expect to win much.

Yes. The author said this, he also said that it was because he didn't like Orcs.

The author in question was (naturally) Matt Ward.

He didn't say it exactly. At a Games Day, he was confronted with the accusation that the Daemons of Chaos book was overpowered, and he answered "It would be a shame if they weren't". In an earlier White Dwarf, it was revealed he didn't actually like Orcs and Goblins. From that, it was extrapolated that Matt Ward designs his rules around how he sees armies in the fluff. He views Orcs as dumb green punching bags, so they got a weak codex, and he sees Daemons as horrendously powerful when they invade, so they got a game-breaking book.

easy to paint, too. i love those wolf models, easy to build with little flash and lots of raised detail, they take a drybrush very well. I paint the gobbos like orcs with just a slight yellow tinge to their skin. I try to use the furry hats on all the riders, too, makes them look like mongols.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:40 No.8972220
I love how half-assed the orc/goblin book is.

my only serious problem with the O&G book - and I KNOW this is longstanding fluff - is that stupid animosity. Even the "toned down" animosity has lost games for me, as one unit up front failing bottlenecks everything behind it. I went to a tourney where by turn 6 i hadn't made it halfway across the table. horrible, horrible day.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:49 No.8972282
    >>8972258
They need to remove Animosity. It isn't fun for anyone. I don't mind having Fanatics hit my own troops but when I roll a one and a unit can't do ANYTHING for a whole turn it is just bullshit. Fluffwise why would they fight eachother when there is an enemy in front of them?

I would also like to see Wolf Chariots back to 2 for 1, Boar Boys less points, maybe Black Orcs less pts because normal Boys seem to always be better, and jazz up the normal Goblins so they have a purpose.

    >Fluffwise why would they fight eachother when there is an enemy in front of them?

    No. They would not.
If anything Animonisty should be a pre-game roll done for each unit with a range of results, such as coming in drunk, maybe missing a few runty members, and when asked claim that they have'nt got a clue what happened to them, and then giggle.
    That sort of thing.

Another rule I'd like to see is something to represent that Orcs and Goblins dont REALLY line up in nice neat formations like you see on the table.
Maybe make it so that Orcs can increase their front row size for free when charging or being charged? And for Goblins it's the reverse?
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:52 No.8972312
    >>8972258
Yea, Animosity needs to go. Whenever you say this though, people (funnily enough, usually ones who don't play O&G) scream BUT THEY'LL LOSE THEIR CHAAARAAAACTER!

Newsflash, kiddies; if the character of an army is summed up by a single rule, then there is a SERIOUS problem either with the army, or with the rule. And frankly I don't think Animosity is all that characterful. When I think of Orcs and Goblins, I don't think of a bunch of goofy green clowns that sit around hitting each other until another army kills them. I think of a huge horde of brutish green monsters, smashing and burning everything in their path to prove that they're the toughest, deadliest things on the face of the planet.

That would work incredibly well, both in-game and fluffwise, and for the roll when they WAAAGH! it could still have a potential to cause casualties but they still charge afterwards, since rather than them fighting each other it means that the runty boyz have literally been trampled underfoot in the charge.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)09:58 No.8972354
If 40k Orkz had animosity there would be so much bitching.
    >> hamster boy 04/04/10(Sun)10:15 No.8972454
    >>8972354
there is a hint of it when you declare a WAAAGH! but, yeah, otherwise they do as they are told.

I think GW is reluctant to let "traditional" animosity go, but the pre-game animosity sounds awesome.

before deployment roll d6 for each unit, 1 is a failure

    roll d6

    1) Drunk. Unit is coming off a fungus beer bender. WS is -1 and unit cannot march for first turn while they clear their head. May charge as normal.

    2) Very Drunk. Unit found some odd "edibles" in the night goblin camp. D6 members of the unit never show up for the battle. -1 to WS and no marching for 2 turns. unit may charge as normal, but must subtract 1 from WAAAGH! rolls.

    3) Brawl. unit gets into some sort of pre-battle scrap. d6 st3 wounds, armor saves as normal.

    4) Found a new path. Unit tries a new tactic that could help them outflank the enemy. do not deploy the unit as normal. on turn 3, roll a d6. on a 5+ the unit shows up on a random table edge (including their own) unit may move and charge as normal. on turn 4, they arrive on a 4+, turn 5, 3+, turn 6, 2+. if the unit never shows, they count as dead for victory purposes.

i need 2 more, brain not work this morning.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)10:17 No.8972468
    >>8972454
    5) Theft, some of the goblins got into the unit's equipment while they were sleeping, if the unit has any extra equipment, they lose it and have only the basic equipment for the battle.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)10:20 No.8972489
    >>8972454
    >>8972468
    6) Overeager, the unit got itself too excited before the battle, eager to prove it's the biggest and the strongest it moves its full march distance forward from its deployment point.
    >> hamster boy 04/04/10(Sun)10:25 No.8972534
?) Where's Da Banna Wava? - if the unit had one to begin with, the unit cannot find the standard bearer. remove the model.

?) 'E 'ad a gig - if the unit had one to begin with, the unit cannot find the musician. remove the model.

They only fight each other when there's nothing else to fight - when there's a common enemy, orks easily work together.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)10:52 No.8972824
I think another thing that would improve orc & goblin armies would be the ability to add orc bullies to any goblin units, not just to siege weapon crews.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/10(Sun)10:55 No.8972861
We'll show 'em! - If several Orc units roll sixes, and are at any time within shouting distance (12 inches) of each other, they begin a game of competitive one-upmanship. All units must charge while within 12 inches of each other and in addition must roll a d3. The unit take the rolled number in wounds, armour saves as normal. In return, the same number is added to movement distance in inches, and added as attacks if the unit enters or is already in combat.
