Evil. That was the first thought that passed through her mind when she saw it. Somebody had designed it, sure, and set it in motion. But as it bore down on her home and passed through a city on its way, Nineteen was certain it had a will of its own. It wished to kill. To feed on destruction.
And when it hit, that’s exactly what it did. It cut into the surface of Utopia like a dull knife–slicing, surely, but also tearing, ripping, as if it weren’t content with merely doing its job. There was a savagery to it. The ground rumbled with its power, and the disturbed air conveyed the promise of its intent. Houses simply turned to microscopic dust before it. The dusty wind, blowing at hundreds of kilometers an hour, acted like a spinning saw blade, widening the devastation to a kilometer or more.
People turned to dust, and their bodies, ground to bits and accelerated instantly, were used to cut down their neighbors. The largest spaceport on Utopia simply disappeared. In the spaceport section of New Dawn alone there were nearly 1.4 million people. In fifteen minutes, three hundred thousand were killed. The lucky ones, like Nineteen, got it instantly.
The evil would be back. It was inevitable as physics.

She blinked slowly, floating in the Virtuality. It was a jarring experience, being ripped from her body so suddenly... She had felt this way before, way back when Thirteen, Hannah, had found her in the depths of a salvaged pod. She had lost her physical body then too...

But the soul still remains even in the Virtuality as Nineteen began to reconstitute herself into a more recognizable figure. It was... an unwelcome feeling to be embedded in the planet's network, yet it allowed her to reach out and feel what was happening across the surface of the entire world.

This is One Week before HANA 13 awakens in her Sleeper Ship. Two seconds after the Rip Tether passed over her home. You are Nineteen.

She could feel ships disconnecting from the network and fleeing into space, the populace evacuating while the Military scrambled to understand exactly what was going on. The minds of other HANA entered the network as they were forcefully separated from their forms, confused and bewildered that their bodies had been destroyed. It was chaotic.

And above it all, Nineteen floated serenely. Calm. Considering her next move.

Okay. First, let's try to find just what that was. Did something in orbit launch it? Get a view of what's happening in Utopia's orbit.

Let's focus on finding whatever is currently attacking our planet and help the military to coordinate a defence against it, while helping as many people as possible to escape as well.

Nineteen felt part of the Network vanish as several of the Satellites in orbit around the planet were destroyed and several large ships dropped into low orbit to replace them. The large rotating object that had been released into the planet's atmosphere had been confirmed to be dropped by them.

It was... enormous. A giant spinning pillar that rotated on its axis and even extended into the upper layers of the planet's atmosphere. She couldn't even comprehend how something so large could have been crafted, yet there it stood, mocking her.

Ships lifted off and fled before it, the panicking masses moving to get out of its rather linear path.

So the pillar is laying on the surface of the planet like a giant rolling pin, or it it standing straight up? Because if the latter I don't understand how it could have come down like a whip and scourged a horizontal line across the planet.

Regardless, we need to stop those ships that dropped it.

You reach out to the heaviest concentration of Military communications and let them know of your presence. The rather occupied looking face of a man appears before you in the Virtuality after a minute.

"Sectors 7 through 11 are clear for evacuation, please stand by for convoy escort... Yes? We are rather occupied right now, and you wouldn't even be getting through normally if it wasn't for your rather unique identifiers. We are trying to find a way to take out that large tether that is carving its way through a mountain range at the moment, as well as coordinating defensive efforts alongside evacuations. Whoever they are, they are firing on the fleeing transports as soon as they exit the atmosphere, as well as making life hell down here. Its a meatgrinder!"

"I'd advise you to get any other HANA linked to the network if possible, as their minds can survive in it even if their bodies are destroyed."

The man's face coughs slightly. "I know, we've had many HANA in the military continue fighting even when they've been... integrated. Most choose to operate vehicles or other craft remotely, but that means that they must separate from the larger Network. If the vehicle goes down, they tend to as well.

Something is inside that tether that's ripping up the surface of the planet - it is adjusting itself to maintain balance when we throw anything substantial at it. We are currently trying to ring it with giant electromagnets to cause it to snap in half due to its great force, but when we get a HANA close to it they tend to go nuts."

I'm confused. I thought Utopia had its own space defense fleet. Where are our battleships? Why haven't they started attacking the enemy yet? And what about the Station? We know it has nuclear launch capabilities.

Ah well, doesn't matter. If HANAs can't handle being near the pillar, just send normal soldiers to do it. We should try getting any other HANAs to safety in the Network.

"If you'd like to assist in that, we'd have you try to engage whatever presence might be inside the object. We'll do the rest and alert you when we are about to flip the switch. If engaged successfully, the magnets should cause the part of the tether in the upper atmosphere to snap off and fly out into space - the bottom half will fall on the planet, and we are trying to avoid any populated areas.

Most of the other HANA we sent near it weren't actively aware of the presence at the time or were trying to manage some other task such as flying. They might have just been caught off guard, but we haven't recovered one yet to be certain.

As for the Space Fleet, they seem to be engaged with another fleet in between the Station and here. These Carriers in low orbit are another force, probably specialized for this type of bombardment..."

The man opens a connection for you and you dive through into the waiting chopper. Its a standard Military craft suited to handling in extremely choppy conditions, perfect for this sort of thing. The E-War suite shifts aside to allow you room to expand yourself fully, and in the Virtuality you take the form of a bullet - ready to be shot out into the swirling mass.

The Pilot gets a green light to approach the Rip Tether as several other craft surround it to act as E-War decoys. And then the virtual "gun" fires a hole through whatever firewalls might be up. Now is the time to enter, if there ever was a better chance.

Some kind of massive war machine has been deployed against my home, and is currently drilling its way through the landscape. I came here to stop it, because this is the virtuality inside the machine. This beach, your drink, this whole thing is a massive metaphor for what is happening outside. You say you haven't been to the beach in a long time? Let me tell you what I think. The beach is a battlefield, when you come here it means the machine has been deployed somewhere. You are, intentionally or not, piloting this thing. Can you stop? Is there a way to perhaps get you out? Would you even want to leave?"

Remind me, are we just here to distract her long enough for the chopper to attach the magnets, or do we have to disable/stop Seven?

"I didn't say anything of the sort! I said it needed a bit more sugar and a tad more lemon, sure! Taste it! It needs it!" She sticks out her tongue in mock disgust. "Bleah!" The rest of what you say doesn't seem to impact her much besides giving her a good laugh. "Do you actually believe what you're saying? Hah! Its ludicrous! You should go to a mental hospital or something! Or become a poet at least! I'm telling you, I live here! I always come to this beach when I can! There is no war, no battlefield, no weapon at all! You decide to change gears and ask politely if you could test her drink. She offers you a sip politely through a straw while it remains in her hand, and is unprepared for you reaching forward to snatch it from her loose grip.

She clumsily gets up in protest, yelling that its her glass and you shouldn't take it without asking. You respond by tossing its contents out onto the sand, watching the dry beach hungrily absorb the liquid.

And then the sun teeters and falls into the sea.You share Seven's look of confusion as the ocean turns to blood and the beach to torn, rugged soil. The sky shows nothing but falling stars, and the boardwalk vanishes to show empty, ruined houses.
"What... where am I?" Seven struggles to ask as a loud voice booms out of seemingly nowhere.

"SYSTEM FAILURE, ABNORMALITY DETECTED. SIMULATION DETERIORATING. RETRIEVAL OF CONTROLLER IN PROGRESS."

You search for the hole you came in from and find it, just a pinhole now. Seven is standing in the middle of a virtual cyclone, her world breaking apart and collapsing around her as she shuts her eyes to it all.

"COME ON!" You yell at her, reaching out to pull her from her little world. You can do it - you can feel her simply standing there, allowing others to move her, to direct her. You grab her arm, and -pull- her out of the Virtuality. Once more you struggle through fierce winds, fighting your way out of the "eye" and towards your waiting craft.

The Pilot nods his head as you give him the Green Light, the hovercraft pulling away from the furiously spinning tether. The magnetic ring activates far above you, causing the large metal object to stop short and snap in half. The top part flies off into space, given enough momentum to reach escape velocity. The bottom half topples and slowly falls towards the ground, an enormous pillar causing tremors for miles around. But at least the threat has ceased.

Seven has retreated inside herself, stunned by the rapid and strange change of viewpoint. This makes her easier to move around, yet almost comatose to an observer such as yourself. Maybe she'll recover. Maybe.

In low orbit above Utopia, a researcher slams his fist angrily into a computer panel. "God dammit, how the hell did something get inside that Rip Tether! How the hell did it get inside the controlling program? Shit..." He angrily glares at the slowly breathing body in front of him, tied into several large machines.

A white suited attendant approaches cautiously, bearing a clipboard and a rather frightened expression. "Sir, we aren't reading any mental signals from <B7> anymore. She's lost all higher level mental functions, but her brainstem is keeping her body functioning. We've attached some machines to compensate, but she's pretty much an empty shell."

The researcher sighed deeply and rubbed the bridge of his nose with a thumb and forefinger, looking exasperated. He waved a hand dismissively at the prone figure, turning away quietly. "No need for a broken tool. Unhook it and dispose of the body. Prep a new one for a simulator and this time -please- shut out any incoming communications. I'll write up a report."

Your craft flies away from the collapsing structure triumphantly, unaware of what transpires in the airless void above. Refugees fleeing the planet are unwillingly caught in the crossfire between Human and Thickhide fighters fighting fiercely for superiority, and causalities mount.

At least for now the greatest threat is silenced, allowing the planetside military to concentrate its efforts on repelling the invaders above them. For now, Nineteen is safe and Seven is secure.

Many, many systems away from there a black clad figure taps against the glass container in front of him, observing quietly. A small voice perks up inside his head, talking quietly. "We have recovered nearly five hundred stasis capsules from four floating wrecks. Each one contains a live human in stasis. What should we do..."
He cuts the voice off with a quick wave of a black, pointed finger. "Tell me, Aubury. Do you think we gave up too much?"
"What do you mean?" The small voice replies.
"Look at her. She is so fragile, so delicate. We were all so similar at one time, yet we have evolved into something more. But at what cost? I don't need to breathe, don't need to eat, and can live happily in a vacuum for all of my days. My nerves are nothing but thin wires and my blood is a silver dust! They adapted to technology and life on a planet while we adapted to living in the most inhospitable environment ever. I could snap her bones as easily as breaking a twig! But somewhere along the way, we lost ourselves."
"I'm not skilled for this level of introspection."
"Oh, shut up and wake her up. It will be good to have someone to talk to, at least."
He drummed his fingers against the cold glass, the sleeping redhead unaware of anything beyond her induced slumber.
