The lights blink out like tiny stars, one by one. They leave you in darkness, in the fields of the mind, Hretmar your only companion. He smiles, pulling you to him, gesturing to the black expanse ahead. And he breathes, ever so softly, his eyes shining with a power you can only dream of.
You see the world, hanging in nothing. The solid greens and tans of continents, braced by the vast blueness of oceans. It turns, rotating silently beneath your vision, slowly bringing certain places into view. A white-rimmed border, enclosing thousands upon thousands of tiny blue-green points, sitting in wait. You move closer.
Perin fills your vision, edging out the fading form of Hretmar, swallowing your mind with its cities, rivers, lakes, and towns, a million places all in your view at once. Slowly, you cast them away, looking for the two among them that would hold your attention. You find them, bringing them together, gazing on them, taking everything in. Your adopted village, where so much time and effort was spent. Your garrison, where you found acceptance and responsibility. Both, frozen in time, the people standing about like models, all beyond your touch.
Hretmar floats beside you, his form now clear and sharp against the background. He speaks, finally, bringing you out of it.
“SEE AS I, KNOW AS I,” he tells you, eyes twinkling, “THIS IS YOUR WORLD TO A GOD.” A pause, as he composes himself. “I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SHOW YOU THIS IN THE FUTURE, PERHAPS IN A HUNDRED YEARS. BUT YOU INSISTED ON EXPEDIENCE.”
He closes his eyes, floating back, entwining his hands behind him. “MAYA. THOUGH YOU ARE MY ONLY...” He inhales. “I... CANNOT PROTECT YOU. I CANNOT ENSURE YOUR SAFETY. YOU... SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON ME. ON ONE WHO HAS FALLEN SO FAR.” |
