You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a mage beyond peer. You are a dog of the military.

Another morning. Another day. The skies remain that awful gray, keeping the sun's warm light from peeking through. It's the perfect day for a send-off. A perfect day for a funeral.

The Master Armorer accepts the armor of the fallen, to be re-forged in honor, saluting the brethren of the dead as he and his men carry the bent and broken pieces to the furnace. The squad leaders cast the blackened uniforms into a pit of flame, leaving them to burn in silence. The ashes, spread in the center of the courtyard, are infused into its surface by the mages, so that they can never be recovered.

Ceril, clad in black, gold-trimmed dress, reminds you all of the luxury of service behind the lines, of the simple joys that do not exist in the wastelands of the front. Here, the bodies of the dead, empty as they are, can be returned to the families of their once-owners, and buried according to their custom. Here, the will and courage of the soldier can be honored in ceremony, where in the trenches, only a quiet prayer, if that, could be offered. Here, there is no war. There is battle, but there is no war.

You cannot help but think 'for now.'

The news has been growing worse of late. The Forusians have massed their reserves for a counterattack, and are pushing the armies of Perin steadily back, reclaiming the land of their borders. Incursions reach even to the cities, encroaching upon the Capitol, vomiting up great beasts of the earth to burn the works of man. It is, in a word, biblical. Were this to happen in your world, it would be seen as a foretelling of Armageddon, of a horrible cataclysm yet to come. The scryers, priests, and magicians of the old paths predict that the nation will be engulfed in flames, and the country itself will be consumed by the pit of hell.

The Conclave assures all that this cannot come to pass. Lord Olan himself has become convinced this is his crisis, his test from the gods. He is pouring all he has into the Conclave's coffers, gathering mages of all kinds from all corners of the land, offering riches untold and noble title to the fabled saviors of Perin. His eldest now leads the Capitol, as the father becomes absorbed in his quest for an answer, for the key to the crisis.

Intelligence has its track. The incursions can be predicted now; with startling regularity. The filaments are multiplying. Untold energies are being thrust into the mantle from all directions, driving the things of the deep out and upward. There is talk of a hellish army of elementals approaching the Capitol from the tunnels under, seeping up through fissures to take the cities. Unless the source of the incursions can be found, even the might of the Conclave cannot stave off the end.

We seem to be fully embroiled in the whack-an-elemental game at the moment, so our options are rather limited. At present it won't hurt to try and connect some dots real quick.

Does Hretmar feel that the same force that is unbalancing and hybridizing the fire elementals could have been behind the Frost Elemental that nearly killed us dead? It's mind was cut off from him and thats pretty suspicious consideing he should be its god.

Lights blink into being like stars in the night sky, expanding, one by one, into hazy, faded images before they sharpen into faces. At Ilian's prompting, the newcomers introduce themselves.

A stocky, clean-shaven face, marred with shallow scars. “Julian. Harvester, potter, general dirt-worker.”

Big, portly, but with gentle eyes, nodding politely. “Oplace, god of wine and women. At your service, young lady.”

A trio of faces, all joined by thin, wispy gray threads. “Brother Hunters. Where there's forest, we've got your back.”

Several others introduce themselves in turn. There is a god of knowledge, one of the seasons, two of plants, and a final one of battle. They argue for a few minutes before agreeing on something, and Julian, pushed to the front, addresses you.

“The easiest way to track the filaments is from within their natural environment, the mantle.”

Ilian nods, glancing at you. “Between us, we've got a few dudes up to a little adventure. Some sightseeing, maybe a light lunch in the friggin' core. I'd ask if you'd like to tag along, being valuable and all. But...” he looks you over, “Kind of a risk.”

I'm thinking of becoming chief of one of smaller tribes (may we could find one that is less barbaric, or maybe a weak one which would welcome change), introduce them to some benefits of civilization, and working from that. This is very long term plan but frost giants can be creative educated culture in right conditions and currently are victims of circumstances. Sae is emphatically against anyone going into the mantle, ever. Especially a giant blue woman who catches on fire if you look at her wrong. But if you absolutely insisted, he could provide you with an item of his that served him well in the past. A small stone enchanted with a mining charm, which can bore a tunnel straight through anything at a word.

Ceril would authorize your 'detachment' from the base if and only if you allowed your helm to be imbued with a scrying rune. Intelligence could dearly use whatever information you could pull up, even if it's most probable you would die in the process of retrieving it. You are a soldier. To the Capitol, the nation as a whole is infinitely more valuable than a single mage. Given the state of Perin at the moment, she shares that view.

You and the others would be invested with all the power the gods could spare. Most of it would go towards straight shielding, but your weapons would be buffed as well.

We're probably going to die alone and in the dark, miles below the surface, but there's a chance we'll save millions of lives.

Alternately, we could save millions of lives by researching dusty tomes and doing lots of scrying, then directing a way nastier kill team onto whatever target we help discover.

Two weeks have passed. You have secured the aid of Sercen, a god of water, and the twin sisters Ala and Ela, goddesses of the 'natural' order. Sercen has made it clear that he answers to no one, even his brethren, and is only helping you because he doesn't want 'the rivers and lakes to boil away'. The goddesses are somewhat more friendly, assuring you that they support the 'setting right' of the underworld. Ilian and his merry band of deities has informed you that the fire gods, what little has been heard of them, seem to be strangely uninvolved, as if they're merely spectating.

From Sae, you have acquired a mining stone, which can tunnel through the toughest rock. From Ceril, a scrying rune, which enables Intelligence to see a short distance through your helm. The enchanter, Marc, went a little out of his way to take care of your armor, re-enhancing the fire protection charms and giving your weapons a 'demon-cleaving' aura to match the anti-elemental one.

Thankfully, Fairnest had plenty of what you wanted, though it was a bit difficult to wade through all the awestruck townspeople while you were shopping. Bem and Kel accompanied you on your last run, having come all the way from Dreamwood to see you off. Your armor is now stamina enhancing, extremely well-protected against fire, and charmed with the best luck you could buy. Runic tattoos on your arms and legs (temporary, they will fade) give you an additional layer of fire protection and superior self-healing ability.

At the end of it, you felt like a new person, buffed to high heaven and packed with so much magical power you practically glow in the dark. Through Hretmar, you said farewell to all of your adopted family back home, assaulted from all sides by tearful goodbyes and strict orders to come back alive. Bem wished you the best, and told you that he would never have expected you to take something like this on, never in a thousand years. They will sing your song into the ages.

Kel kept his composure well, giving you a small, roughly-carved wooden box, 'to open when you get back'. After placing it by your bed, you walked out to the main gate, where most of the garrison had turned out to see you off. Kel gave you a fist pump, as you taught him, and shouted at you to 'stay safe' as you left, waving at your friends and comrades behind you. Since then, you have been running almost non-stop, testing out your stamina as you headed toward Evermain. You arrived early, catching some rest at the edge of the forest before departure day.

Ilian gave you a simple message as the sun rose, two words. “It's time.”

The ground comes up to meet you. The five of you sink rapidly into the earth, cocooned in a yellowish field that shears the rock with blazing power. The surface closes over above you as you travel, quickly, down through the layers. Boulders break against your shields with a brief jolt, while small pockets of gas leave you free-falling, plunging again into the steadily warming rock. A brief glance confirms that Thatos has his eyes closed, an orange, angled rune shining from his forehead. As you enter a layer of shifting, molten stone, he opens his hands, slowing your descent.

    “Almost there.”

    >8

You drop through the ceiling of the earth, falling into a cavern lit with the fires of hell. The fields flicker as you hit the bottom, burying your legs in the floor. They go out at once as Thatos's rune disappears and he opens his eyes wide. Even through all of your armor and your magical shielding, you can feel the heat like a summer day in Texas. Thin wisps of white fire trail above you, stretching up to the ceiling, raking through it as they move. There are creatures of all kinds climbing them, riding them to unknown destinations.

A group of Demons rear their heads at you as the party climbs out of the rock. There are eight, four of them rather small. They screech, filling your ears with a painful ringing.

The party is fanning out. Thatos motions for you to stay back.

Reasoning that the blazing heat just might make ice bolts impractical, you take out your crossbow, flipping the catch that loads standard bolts. You move back, taking aim as the Demons' eyes begin to glow.

Thatos raises his hands. The nearest creature lifts up on its hind legs and splits into two, all the way down, spilling pink sludge and gleaming gems all over the cavern floor. Loken nods to the sorceress, drawing his longsword as he begins to float, slowly lifting up off the ground. With a loud roar he flies toward another Demon, removing the top of its head with one swift slash. Grimstan levels his staff, mouthing something unintelligible.

You let loose a bolt, striking yet another enemy square in the center eye, killing it instantly. Five remain, and they are about to fire.

You wind the crossbow, inserting another bolt as you dodge a blast of flame from a smaller Demon. The priest stands completely motionless while you move past him, bright white beams splashing against a fine green field around his body. The staff whirls, shooting out of his hands and burying itself in the closest Demon's midsection. Its eyes dull immediately, leaving the empty corpse to fall as the staff returns to his hands. Four.

Another bolt. Another Demon down. Three. Loken makes a flying kick to the head of another, thrusting a spiked boot into its center eye and stabbing a shortsword through the other. Two. Thatos pulls the last large one apart with telekinesis, throwing the pieces against the wall. One.

The last creature, a small one, begins to retreat, skittering back on piercing legs. Loken grunts, pulling a dagger from his boot, throwing it with sublime accuracy. A burning red eye bubbles pink. Zero.

Thatos raises an eyebrow. “Nice job,” he says, “Guess you're the real thing after all.” To the priest, who is holding his staff up to the 'sky', “Direction?”

The priest responds slowly. “Forward. Left. Short tunnel. New cavern.”

“Here we go.” The fire mage sets off, with the others following him. He glances back at you. “You've got good aim. We were missing an archer. Up for it?”

You run, swinging your halberd as the others cover you. The two elementals notice you, dropping down to the floor and beginning a slow walk towards you, arms outstretched. Your heavy boots crunch on scattered pebbles as you leap up, bringing the halberd across with a silent prayer.

    >3

It passes right through the filament, the shining red aura slicing through the first elemental's neck, beheading it. The other one topples over as his friend's body falls backward.

“So much for that,” says the swordsman, coming up beside you. His longsword lances through the second creature's head, shattering it into tiny pieces. The filament moves away from you, dragging along the ceiling, carrying its devilish payload up to some poor town.

“Nothing we can do about it,” the fire mage tells you, giving you a sympathetic look, “If we succeed here, we'll get them all anyway.”

You continue to follow the stream's path, weaving around the outcropping to find that the molten flow drops off, falling into a pit far below. You can see tunnels branching off from it, draining magma off into unseen caverns.

The priest taps his staff. “Further. Down.”

“I wonder if there's a less... difficult path?” Supra says absently. The priest says nothing, his eyes narrowing.

Thatos kicks a small stone into the pit, watching it sink into the fiery mixture. “There's a limit to our shields. Do you think we should risk it?” He asks the rest of you.

Wait, what are Supra suggesting - going across the pit or diving (in the magic shield) through it?

Also I imagine our shield works by deflecting heat (first example). Could heat pump be used to divert part of heat by fraction, I imagine it would be easier than deflecting it completely.

“Well. Down we go, I guess.” Thatos motions all of you to the edge, asking Supra if she wouldn't mind letting you all down a little easy. Faint purple rings appear around your legs as you begin amping up your aura.

You go first, stepping off and into the air. You fall slowly, directing all of your power into the area directly below you. Blue-white clouds form under your feet as you close on the magma at the bottom of the pit, leeching the heat from it. A small area hardens enough for you to stand on, and the others promptly join you, dropping onto your stepping stone.

    Thatos looks around. “Grim?”

The priest points to the right. “There. Down. Very hot.”

“What else is new?” the swordsman grumbles.

You keep moving, sticking close to each other as you keep the path just solid enough to step on, making your way through a winding, downward-sloping tunnel.

It gets almost unbearably hot, the molten river giving your shields more trouble than you'd like. The tunnel ends inside a tiny cavern, with a few short pillars rising out of a small magma lake, swirling about as it drains down. You step onto them, panting as you feel the drain cease.

The priest leans toward the wall in front. “Forward. Blocked.”

Thatos glances at you. “Still got that mining stone?”

You take the mining stone from its pouch, seeing the runes light up as it touches your palm. Your heavy, armored fist closes around it, and you remember Sae's strict instructions, focusing on the space directly in front of you.

    >10

The wall shudders, its surface pulling aside and curving, opening a quickly widening tunnel to the other side. The five of you step inside quickly, following its straight, unwavering path as the runes continue to glow, lighting the darkened walls with green.

A small point of light appears at the far end, slowly pulling apart into a hole just wide enough for you to get through. The stone goes back into its place as you make it in, stepping into another tiny cavern, thankfully devoid of magma. A massive boom shocks you forward as the tunnel collapses, the weight of the world closing it tight.

Grimstan taps his staff once, twice, frowning deeply. “Down. Blurry. Across.”

“You alright?” the fire mage asks, patting the priest's shoulder.

“Can't see. No light.” He strikes the staff against the floor, producing nothing but a sharp 'crack'. His eyes close, his face taking on a mask of serious concern.

“Well, shit,” Thatos sighs. “Looks like we'll be going in blind.”

The cavern shakes violently, knocking you against the wall. Cracks appear along the edges of the ceiling, spreading through the center as another tremor throws the others to the ground. The roof is coming down.

No, DM would have asked us to roll again if the modifier was allowed for this.

    rolled 3, 2, 6 = 11

You reach out with your mind, shutting out the roar. Your eyes flash with green, the energy of your body seeping into the stone wall, tearing it open with brute strength, shaping it into what you want it to be. The sorceress strains against it, widening the alcove, pushing the wall inward.

The ceiling scrapes against your helm as you crawl in, dragging Thatos and Loken with you. Their fields flicker wildly as they make contact with the falling rock, shearing layers off as the five of you pull your feet in, still pressing the wall.

It's not enough. You squeeze in, all piling up in the tiny space, meeting the unyielding rock face while Supra screams obscenities, pounding pointlessly on the rock with her glowing fists. The ceiling passes, carrying thousands of tons of stone behind it. The swordsman pushes against you, shouting over and over, but you can't move fast enough.

His field flickers again, giving out for a brief second. His right leg is pinned inside the falling pillar, and he screams frantically as it continues down, breaking it off at the knee.

Grimstan presses his hands against the squirming swordsman, his eyes suddenly shining a piercing white, lighting up the alcove just as the wall gives way.

You tumble forward, diving against the floor while the pillar continues to descend behind. The priest pulls the swordsman forward. You and the sorceress collapse by the wall, exhausted.

Loken thrashes from side to side, holding the remains of his leg. “This! Better! Be! Fucking! Worth! It!” He shouts.

Grim steadies him, whispering quietly. “Time. Heal. Not dead yet.”

The fire mage knocks his head against the wall, scraping his helmet on the surface. “I hate this place.”

Him and me both. Now, let's help heal, if Grim needs the help that is.

The priest is fully capable of regenerating the swordsman's leg. However, it will be bare of armor, so if the field fails again, bad things will happen.
