179 KB Besetting with Bees Anonymous 03/07/10(Sun)01:47 No.8445349
    Dear Corpulen/tg/entlemen,

I'm running a session tomorrow. I'd like to have the BBEG scream "RELEASE THE BEES!" and then flood the dungeon chamber the party is in with angry bees as a prelude to the final battle. However, there are no stats for a swarm of standard angry honeybees.

    TL;DR:

Are three locust swarms appropriate for a party of four level 6 characters to represent a shitton of angry bees in DnD 3.5E? If not, what is appropriate?

    Locust Swarm:
    Size/Type: Diminutive Vermin (Swarm)
    Hit Dice: 6d8–6 (21 hp)
    Initiative: +4
Speed: 10 ft. (2 squares), fly 30 ft. (poor)
    Armor Class: 18 (+4 size, +4 Dex), touch 18, flat-footed 14
    Base Attack/Grapple: +4/—
    Attack: Swarm (2d6)
    Full Attack: Swarm (2d6)
    Space/Reach: 10 ft./0 ft.
    Special Attacks: Distraction
Special Qualities: Darkvision 60 ft., immune to weapon damage, swarm traits, vermin traits
    Saves: Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +2
    Abilities: Str 1, Dex 19, Con 8, Int —, Wis 10, Cha 2
    Skills: Listen +4, Spot +4
    Feats: —

A locust swarm surrounds and attacks any living prey it encounters. A swarm deals 2d6 points of damage to any creature whose space it occupies at the end of its move.

Distraction (Ex): Any living creature that begins its turn with a locust swarm in its space must succeed on a DC 12 Fortitude save or be nauseated for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Skills: A locust swarm has a +4 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks.

Uh, a swarm of bees is going to kill a group of adventurers if they're magic demon bees or not.

Unless the wizard gets a lucky fireball on the whole swarm before they get close, that's hundreds of attacks by enemies you basically can't hit, which have a stacking poison effect.
    >> Anonymous 03/07/10(Sun)02:09 No.8445689
Speaking of bees, this thread reminds me of an idea I had a while back I would like to get your opinions on. I was think of making a wooden breastplate (with Ironwood cast on it) for a druid to wear filled with bees that he has charmed / controls. The armor would be partially hallowed to allow them to bee in it.

My impression is that a swarm only pulls off its attack once a turn.

Regardless, we have a psionic caster/summoner and a warlock in the party.

There's also a ranger with a blowdart gun and a palladin, but if it seems too broken that can't do as much.

Would giving them some torches to light the way even the odds?

    4d8+4 (22) hp, 14 ac, 1d6 swarm and a poison (fort 18 negates) of 1d6 dex.

well, in real life or in game?

because in real life, torches are fairly damn effective. especially if you can get it smoking a lot.

How good are bees at getting under doors?
    >> Anonymous 03/07/10(Sun)02:40 No.8446163
    >>8446152
    very.

    very very.

unless the door has, like, weather sealing, very very very.

    >> Anonymous 03/07/10(Sun)02:42 No.8446185
    >>8446163

So one swarm could get under the door in about 1d6 rounds?

Also, how does a splitting mechanic sound for the swarms? Ex: a swarm can divide into two with half the health, each dealing half as much damage, but also able to evade much more rapidly.

    >>8446185
This plan of yours will be easily foiled if any of your party has access to any Wall spells, especially Prismatic Wall, Wall of Smoke, Wall of Magma, Wall of Fire, Wall of Smoke, or Wall of Force.

    1d6 rounds sounds about right.

maybe 2d6 if you're feeling generous, but those bees were coming through FAST.

In general. A smart caster will find a way to funnel them into a Wall spell and make the entire ploy pretty much a joke. Hell, even someone with Use Magic Device holding the right Wand or Scroll.

Prismatic, Magma, Fire, and Smoke walls make the bees not worth mentioning anymore regardless of how its formed.

I'm fairly sure at least one character has prismatic wall. I'm not expecting the party to think of this. They're not the brightest bunch so to speak.

However, on the off chance that they do manage to subdue the bees, should I have a shitton of bears/etc ready to charge on in if this fails?

I'm trying to figure out how else to dick with the psionic guy at the moment.

Covered in holes from which pour endless torrents of bees.

Only thing that occurs to me is that generally, anyone with armor will have both the normal armor and a pretty solid layer of clothing underneath, so they should be highly resistant to the bee attacks.

wizards, rogues, and such would be fucked, however.

Next island my pcs run into is going to based around a central volcano surrounded in forest.

Bearantula will be swarming the forest and bearodactyl will roost on the volcano. The volcano will be a beehive filled with molten honey.

Ok just checked in on Eldritch blast. It cannot in fact target bees. The only one that might be able to do shit against the bees is the psionic character, who will probably have spent all his points anyway on a stupid astral construct. Troll encounter is go.
