    24 KB Previously, on Tau Quest - Recap Edition Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:09 No.8434179
You awoke from suspended animation in a deserted cryogenic vault adjoining the Su'T'ji's surgical suite with no memory of your own identity. You were able to readily deduce that you were tau and female, but a fog of amnesia obscured everything prior to your interment. Garbing yourself in a flimsy paper gown, you undertook an exploration of your surroundings and quickly concluded that something was terribly wrong; laboratories were in disarray, the operating theater awash in old human blood and there was no sign of what could have been responsible.

The first thing you did was arm yourself, taking a heavy-duty armor saw from the surgery - one used to extract wounded crisis suit operators from their armor - and attempted to learn what had transpired. The surgical suite's computer indicated that an Imperial space marine had been restrained there for examination, but something had caused the crew to evacuate, leaving their specimen in the lab until a power fluctuation caused the security footage to fail. The gue'la's whereabouts, afterwards, were unknown.

While you were engrossed in the security feed, a dark shadow loomed up behind you and caused a momentary panic as you tried to flee from your unseen assailant. Fortunately, it was just Drone - a helpful technical drone, bumbling around in the dark. The drone readily accepted your command to accompany you, and together you set off to explore the ship and find the deck's security substation.

It wasn't long after you left the safety of the surgical suite that you encountered the first sign of life aboard what otherwise seemed to be an abandoned science vessel. An explosion rocked the ship, causing blast doors to descend. Taken aback as you were by the sudden crisis, you failed to notice the threat closing in on you.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:10 No.8434181
A computer console crackled to life and the gruff voice of the missing space marine issued forth, warning you of impending ad as a hideously hunched creature with curling claws and the dead flesh of a fellow tau stretched across its rictus visage leapt upon you with murderous intent. Thanks to the timely warning and some handy bladework dismembered the creature.

The immediate threat dispatched, the space marine explained that he had been forced to destroy a laboratory module to prevent the seemingly undead menace from gaining more of a foothold on this deck. Contemptuously dubbing you Xeno, he instructed you to make your way to deck 5 and the data center there so that you could meet, face-to-face.

Your route to the security station remained blocked by the depressurized compartments, forcing you and Drone to find a way around by accessing a maintenance tunnel. As you cautiously made your way to the bypass, a preternatural sense of unease overtook you, almost an extrasensory perception of an impending threat. You ducked into an alcove and stilled your breath, waiting silently as a pair of the skeletal creatures shambled by, unaware of your presence. Waiting long enough to ensure that they were gone, you resumed your hunt for the maintenance tunnel.

Upon discovering the bypass, you worked frantically to disengage the magnetic locks holding it in place before the creatures could double back on your position. Dropping your saw to the ground and heaving with both hands, you manage to wrench it open and scramble into the crawlspace just as the sickle-like claws of the creatures slash the space you previously occupied. In your panic, you seal the hatch behind you with Drone and your weapon on the wrong side!
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:10 No.8434191
Unable to go back, you were forced to soldier on and make your way to the security center. Unfortunately, without Drone's helpful automapping, you quickly became lost in the darkened crawlspace and it was only a matter of luck that you succeeded in finding your destination - one well-placed kick knocked out a wall panel that lead directly into the substation, allowing you to clamber out of the tight space and into relative safety.

Beyond the security station, the Su'T'ji was exposed to the cold vacuum of space, heavily reinforced windows revealing the twisted deckplate and superstructure of the gue'la space marine's handiwork. A quick inventory of the center's contents revealed little in the way of weaponry safe for an impressively large pipe spanner, but at least you were able to disgard your tattered paper gown in favor of a proper jumpsuit, the solid construction and reinforced material no doubt originally intended for a crisis suit operator.

Donning an extra-vehicular activity suit from another locker, you decompressed the security station and made your way carefully towards the hull breach, magnetic boots holding your hooves down to the deck. As you attempted to circumnavigate a particularly treacherous tangle of structure, however, you slipped free and were cast out into the bottomless abyss of space!

Panic gripped you as it appeared your quest may have come to an abrupt end, but an equally abrupt collision with an immoveable object saved you from death in space - it was Drone, battered and beaten but still intact, swooping in to catch you on the surface of its disc! The crippled technical drone had survived its encounter, somehow, and had hurried to join you, just in time to prevent your unfortunate demise.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:11 No.8434196
Reunited, Drone returned you to the surface of the Su'T'ji's hull and together you made your way towards deck five. Once again, a tingle along your spine presaged an imminent threat as lights across the hull began to wink out one after another, casting the middle distance in impenetrable shadow as the void rushed in to fill it. Your island of light continued to shrink, an enormous shape picking its way between shadows towards your position, forcing you and Drone to ingress through a maintenance lock on deck six. Again, you manage to seal the lock behind you just as the threat is upon you, an enormous creature with a bulbous head full of dead eyes crashing against the heavy pressure doors again and again until finally giving up pursuit.

Given an opportunity to rest and collect yourself after the impromptu space walk, you took the time to examine Drone and try to repair it. Strange silver gashes along fuselage reveal exotic and unfamiliar machinery, some sort of technological sickness infecting the loyal construct. You concluded that whatever attacked Drone must have done this, somehow, and resolved to get to deck five where you'll be better able to examine it.

The maintenance bay in which you find yourself lets out onto a secondary energy management system, one which appears to be leaking plasma across the deck. Your path is blocked by these containment failures, a safety lockdown preventing any coming or going through the central lift shaft. It will be necessary, you realized, to seal each of three breaches before you can continue to deck five.

As you prepare to depart, your eyes settled on a replacement for your abandoned saw - a heavy-duty fusion torch, the sort of two-handed industrial tool intended for hull repairs and macro-construction applications. Equipping yourself with the makeshift weapon, a pair of welder's overalls and matching goggles, you made your way towards the first plasma vent.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:11 No.8434202
A skitter of movement caught your eye as you approached the first leak, but the blindingly bright flow of energy from the damaged conduit prevented you from identifying it. Slipping the heavily tinted goggles over your eyes, you hauled on the bypass valve and sealed the first leak, then followed your stricken companion to the next. This time, you were able to identify the intruders as a multitude of enormous insects, lapping at the flow of plasma as if it were little more than syrup. They scattered almost as quickly, allowing you to seal the second breach with little difficulty.

A skittering, clambering sound built behind the walls of the engineering space as you made your way to the final leak, the strange insects seeming to gather en masse as you hauled back on the final valve. As the flow of plasma came to a halt, a wall of hissing, chittering, silver-backed insects flowed from behind it, giving chase as you made a desperate flight towards the lift!

Momentarily separated from Drone, you bounded over the writhing carpet of creatures to snatch up your confused companion, rolling against the deck to land heavily in the welcoming light of the lift shaft. The doors sealed shut as they crashed against the exterior of the car. Safe, you and your Drone descended towards deck five and your meeting with your erstwhile advisor.

As the lift car came to a halt at your destination, you were struck by the dark and the cold of the data center. Rows upon rows of computer processors, stacked high on racks taller than a battle suit, occupied the majority of the warehouse-like space. The green glow of raw data projected from numerous monitors illuminated an area ahead where you saw the silhouette of the gue'la, but if he had noticed your arrival at all, he gave no sign.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:12 No.8434209
Placing a hand on the space marine's shoulder, you realized with a start that he had been dead for quite some time! Snaking conduits held him upright before a bank of screens, twined around his armor and disappearing into access ports and silver-edged gashes. The screens flickered, displaying a haunting visage that identified itself as the Lady of Infinite Abyss - a necron lord who had lured you here, using the guise of the gue'la to establish trust between you.

A holographic projection of the Lady resolved in the air before you, gazing down with undisguised contempt. It informed you that while you were in stasis, its agents had infiltrated your body and grafted a nanomechanical phylactery to your heart - the very same device which had been granting you awareness of impending threats from nearby necron constructs. You were to act as the Lady's operative, enacting her will as it sought to put down a coup by one of its lieutenants, the Dusk of Uncountable Suns.

Both the Lady and the Dusk had been brought aboard as archeological relics by the tau explorers aboard the Su'T'ji, unaware that they simply lay dormant in stasis. Seeing an opportunity to usurp the Lady's throne and claim its tomb for itself, the Dusk had taken control of the many necrons aboard the ship and resurrected them as one, slaughtering the crew and forcing the survivors to evacuate in the face of an implacable foe that would not die.

As a gesture of good will, the Lady removed the Dusk's influence from Drone, reshaping the tau construct into a necron scarab that immediately joined you in a symbiotic bond. While the sudden and unexpected transformation came as an unwelcome surprise, Drone's mind remained intact despite its new appearance.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:13 No.8434216
Grudgingly, you accepted the Lady's direction to go to deck four and disrupt the Dusk's attempts to return to their tomb so that it could claim the armies that slumbered there for itself. It was constructing a phase drive, a faster-than-light engine of enormous power and incalculable speed, to return with the Su'T'ji before the Lady could consolidate its strength and challenge the Dusk's control.

You departed on the lift, but an obstruction in the shaft below prevented any further progress. Opening an access panel in the floor of the car, you discovered it was because the Dusk's scarabs were rerouting power from energy management above to the drive section below, tangling the shaft with enormous cables and conduits. In an attempt to bypass the obstruction, you attempted to swing from the bottom of the car to a nearby access ladder, but you mistimed swing robbed you of your grip and caused you to fall from the bottom of the car, landing hard on your left arm and shattering the bone.

Injured and dazed by pain, you did your best to scramble out of the way as a tomb spyder - the very same construct you encountered on the hull during your space walk - appeared to investigate. You managed to evade detection by hanging from your knees on the ladder below as the nanites from your phylactery attepted to repair your damaged arm, but the process would take longer than you had to spare.

Instead, you opted to leave your body to heal and join your consciousness with Drone, allowing the two of you to share its scarab form and explore the rest of the deck. You stuck to the shadows of air ducts and crawl spaces, learning more about your surroundings until you felt certain you'd located a way to evade necron patrols.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:13 No.8434226
While your consciousness was joined, you discovered that Drone's core programming was all but identical to that of a mundane scarab, underlying protocols ensuring its loyalty to the Lady as its ultimate root operator. Summoning up unfamiliar instinct and ancient knowledge from your phylactery, you fundamentally altered the scarab, stripping away layers of loyalty assurances and changing it from a tool of the Lady to a true extension of yourself. The experience was intense, giving you your first true taste of creation.

Returning to your body, you navigated the route you had recoinnoitered as Drone, making your way towards a seemingly deserted storage bay where you planned to heal. Unfortunately, the bay was not so unoccupied as you had hoped, the tomb spyder having returned there to enter a rest cycle.

Although it hadn't seemed to take notice of you in its idle state, a combination of the immediate threat and your subconscious desire triggered your phylactery, flooding your physical form with nanites. Your arm was healed instantly as your skeletal and muscular structures were rebuilt to necron specifications, polymer and alloy taking the place of flesh and bone. Your spontaneous metamorphosis from modified tau to combat cyborg roused the tomb spyder, forcing you to fight for your life before it could summon reinforcements.

You waged a losing battle against the much more powerful opponant, desperately trying every means of attack that you could think of - even attempting to have Drone sabotage the much larger tomb spyder. The spyder's in-built countermeasures crushed Drone like a can and consumed it, bludgeoning you repeatedly against the bulkhead wall until death claimed you as well.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:14 No.8434232
Your consciousness roamed free from your body, adrift in a cyberscape twilight between life and death, the cold void of oblivion threatening to consume you as your body struggled to repair itself. Just as you thought you might be lost forever, you were pulled back to the brink. The tomb spyder was caught unawares by your spontaneous resurrection, allowing you to tear it apart with your bare hands, its remains resembling nothing so much as industrial scrap by the time you had extricated your Drone from its innards.

The scarab's inner spark flickered dimly, corruption cloying at the edges of its mind as you instinctively drew its programming into yourself. Necrodermis absorbed from the tomb spyder reconfigured into a new upgrade, replacing redundant and unnecessary organic components with the menas to rebuild your companion. Reborn, Drone shared more in common with you than ever before, parts of its programming irreparably corrupted and replaced with data derived from your own soul; the first of what was sure to be many more creations.

Together, you infiltrated the air ducts of the engineering deck and made your way to the primary reactor pit where the Dusk's minions were working tirelessly to assemble the phase drive. The entire assemblage took the form of a lazily orbiting series of concentric rings, held in place by an array of obelisks around the circumfrence of the pit. Destroying just one would cause the structure to collapse and the Su'T'ji's warp core breach protocols would come into effect, jetisoning the device into space.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!iHDhHidYFJx 03/06/10(Sat)11:15 No.8434241
You dropped from the overhead duct, landing lithely atop one of the enormous obelisks. The surging energies proved to be too much, however, pitching you off the structure to land hard on the catwalk below. The enormous construction necrons laboring on the drive, roused to your presence, began to close as you struggled to recover. The nearest constructor sought to smash you to scrap, but your smaller and more nimble form allowed you to leap from its path, feinting the simple-minded construct into shattering the obelisk with one mighty blow.

Broken loose from its moorings, the obelisk dropped into the reactor pit, causing the phase drive to cascade into collapse. The titanic pressure doors of the reactor section yawned wide, allowing the vacuum of space to rush into the deck. Drone was swept away by the inexorable pull, but you bravely leapt after it to the rescue! Once more together, darkness closed in around you as the void closed in.

The vertigo of tumbling through space gave way to the sensation of floating suspended as the stars winked out around you, all sign of the engineering deck fading away as you were summoned before the Lady of Infinite Abyss. Pleased with your progress but distrustful of your loyalty, the Lady presented you with a test - destroy Drone or face the lord's wrath. Despite yourself, you couldn't bring yourself to harm your companion and so you defied - your disobedience seeming to please the Lady in some way.

Very nice. Guy who suggested covering the knee and ankle joints here; I think it looks much better this way. And delishus space between hips and legs...

She looks a bit like mine, but with armour.

Next goal in the quest: build wearable armour (she doesn't have to be a warmachine all the time)

Again, it looks like it's coming along very nicely. Are you planning to color it or will it be black and white?

Idunno. I've never (digitally) coloured any of my drawings before.

And I was actually thinking of giving her a black and white colour scheme, instead of that hideous black and green normal necrons have.

So, we're still planning to retrieve the Lady's artifacts, right? How much more Necron does Xeno have to be to use them, herself?
    >> Anonymous 03/06/10(Sat)17:20 No.8438254
    >>8438223
Well, assuming it's just a weapon or piece of wargear like a Resurection Orb, we could use them even if we were still 100% Tau. Though admittedly, the Orb wouldn't actually DO anything for us, but we'd be able to use it. If it's something not from the codex, like a piece of hardware that the Lady needs to help get back her strength, like a replacement arm or plycantary or something, than I doubt it would be any use to us whatsoever.

I think I've found a solution for the ankle hinges: an armoured covering to hide them from sight, inspired by >>8436506

Clothes? Where we're going we don't need clothes!

Seriously, though, with the way I drew her she could still put on that jumpsuit and overalls. No reason for me to do a version with clothes.
