  • Over the past 48 hours 4chan's formspring page has gotten over 12,000 questions, and I've received over 3,000 e-mails. Many thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and sent me a message! I was able to respond to a few hundred e-mails and had hoped to start answering questions on formspring, but it seems that the number of questions broke the page. Once that's sorted out, I'll sift through them and answer as time allows.
Thanks again for all of the support!

In other news, /rs/ now processes MediaFire/MegaUpload/and a bunch of other links correctly (this had been broken for months). The old links should be updated in about a week (the checker is taking a while).
Thanks to Popcorn Mariachi for spontaneously appearing and fixing this.

Final reminder: Ask questions here, e-mail me here (I read *every* one), and follow 4chan on the Twitter here.

You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a mage beyond peer. You are a dog of the military.

The garrison unfolds before you as you walk through the main gate. It is a fortress as large as your town, with outer walls extending just over your head, connecting to towers that bear the smooth mark of shaped stone. The tower guards keep their eyes on you as you remove your helmet, their hands on the small ballistas jutting out of the firing slots. The ground shudders at your steps, the armor covering your vulnerable body doubling your weight. Ceril takes you forward, into the complex, on the straight, immaculate road leading into its main part.

As you pass through the inner gate, you are greeted by a flurry of activity. A troop of men in full armor rushes past you, lead by a greenish creature with shining scales. Over and over he shouts, in a raspy voice, as his men jog through the courtyard, answering with booming confidence.

And on it goes, matched by a dozen others from other troops, all criss-crossing through the base, shouting at the top of their lungs. Ceril leads you forward, past several barracks, where a group of men and women, uniforms unbuttoned, come to attention immediately. The one in front salutes sharply, asking loudly:

    “New blood, Commander?”

Ceril continues walking, turning to return his salute, answering, “New blood it is!”

This is greeted by a chorus of cheers from the ranks, many of them waving at you as you pass. You wave back with your free hand, stomping on, leaving faint impressions in the stone surface of the courtyard. After a pass through another section of barracks, you come to a large, ornate structure sporting a massive, overhanging roof, supported by pillars covered in runes. Ceril stops directly in front of it, as do you and your party.

“We are very serious people, sir!” Calls a man from inside the structure. After a few seconds, he emerges, with seven others behind him. Their uniforms are slightly different, incorporating a hood emblazoned with a runic symbol, which they all remove as they enter daylight. All of them salute, and after Ceril has greeted them, the first one turns to you.

“You fancy yourself a wizard, aye?”

You answer in the affirmative as Ceril backs away slowly.

“Well then.” He clasps his hands together, his face contorting into a devilish smile. “Show us your power, wizard! Build me a house!”

We may be more proficient with ice magic do to our nature and a month or two head start, but we are able to create a decent full size house out of stone with earth magic in one go and seal up a massive fire crack in the ground, which seems fairly impressive to me.

Shapes pull together in your mind, connecting into a tall, glowing design shining in the darkness. Your eyes open wide as you thrust your hands up to the sky, imagining the earth itself moving beneath you. The ground quivers, shaking in a steady beat as your hands grow a faint blue-green.

A small space beside the cathedral erupts with ten stone fingers, all shooting up out of the courtyard surface, never breaking it. They curve up, connecting in the middle, forming five arches in a circle, as walls form between them, arcing up and over to merge together in a center dome. The dome itself then sprouts its own arches, which carry another section of walls and another dome, making a two-story structure, tough and utilitarian.

The spaces between the arches cover over, leaving only a single door in the front. You are about to shape the interior when the first mage raises his hand, stopping you.

His eyes flash bright green, and the house sinks back into the earth, its arches subsuming into the courtyard.

“Not bad!” he shouts, “You've proven your command of the art, and that is plenty. For now. But I have been informed that you prefer ice to rock! Show me!”

Trudging about in MS armor has brought your stamina up fairly quickly. You expended less than a third of your power.

The cathedral is an enormous building, covered in detail. Shouldn't be too difficult.

The cold in your center flows outward, entering the ground, floating upward in a spiral. The moisture in the air condenses, forming great, perfect spheres that expand continuously, finally reaching their maximum size. They shape themselves into arches, pillars, windows, coming together in an absolute replica of the mages' cathedral.

Eight bright faces light up as the runes inscribe themselves on the surface of the pillars, the roof extending over them as the central spire rises up, equaling its twin. The cold returns, its task complete.

Your hands reach your hips. That took a lot out of you.

“I can see your skills are quite valuable,” says the head mage, grinning, “We're glad to have you. I won't burden you with further tests today. You may rest.”

The Commander of the garrison leads you forward, to the communal dining hall in the center of the base. It is gigantic, and at least three stories tall, but you would never fit through the doors.

“I'm sure you know what this is,” she says, leaning against the wall, “We try to accommodate all, but as I said before, we do not have the resources to expand all of our facilities.” She gestures to the cathedral, sighing, “Our resident mages expend most of their power trying to track the incursions. Deconstructing your house took more out of Sae than you realize.”

You ask about the mages, and what their position is.

“A dedicated force,” she responds, “Sae is Capitol-trained. The rest come from the cities. None have been here more than two months.” A brief pause, as she considers something. “At times, when manpower is low, we accept temporary assistance from the guilds. Several of our horsemen are on loan at the moment.”

You talk about the incursions for awhile, after Ceril offers your 'party' a tour of the base, which one of her off-duty officers handles gladly. According to the Commander, they are multiplying, becoming more frequent and broader in scope, which you had already known. The mages are aware of the filaments, and trying to predict their paths. The Conclave and its coalition is attempting to find a way to move them, but no one has had any luck so far. Right now, it looks like it's going to keep getting worse.

Your immediate commander will be Captain Sae, who heads the earth-mage division. You will be working with him until the threat has been 'dealt with'. The garrison is equipped with many amenities, a library among them, though it is nowhere near as extensive as Dreamwood's is now.

You did quite well on the test. Sae and his fellows were obviously impressed, which bodes well for your future. Ceril asks you if you wouldn't mind getting rid of the cathedral copy when you have the time, so they don't embarrass themselves trying to work outside their sphere.

If there is nothing else, the twins, Bem, and Kel will be sent back after saying their goodbyes, and you will remain here in the care of the mages until the base is called to action.

    eee, this quest.
So, our skills are formidable in the eyes of "the man" and we have been accepted into service with pretty reasonable accommodation, so we can get to the business of saving the kingdom, etc.

All those bounties, while not technically forbidden or canceled, will have a rather hard time trying to collect, and with our heroic might we shall save the day, earning us brownie points and respect, which in turn will let us get around to becoming ourself again (or remaining huge, blue and fem and making This world pretty awesome too)

I say we should break that ice-house down into snow or vapor if its not too tasking, though we could leave it till the morrow.

Perhaps we could find a nice bit of (reinforced) wall to lean against and have someone fetch us a book.. show that we have brains to go with beauty and (meta- and physical) brawn.

It has been two and a half weeks. Your friends left you with the promise that the town will still be there when you get back; they can take care of themselves. As always, you have your link through Hretmar's library, for updates and communication when required. Kel tells you forcefully to stay out of trouble, and slaps your armored knee good-naturedly. The four leave for home, falling out of sight as the main gate closes. You hope they'll be alright.

From there, you get your first introduction to military life. The cathedral explodes into a flurry of snow at your touch, to the consternation of the mages, who all wish they could be 'so multi-talented'. You tell them you're not that good, obviously, and Sae exclaims that he'd expect a Frost Giant to be skilled with ice. He says he'll trade you a giant-size house for some ice cubes in the summer, and you accept.

The mage unit, with their leftover power, extend the hall's front face into an entranceway just big enough for you to sit down in, so you can eat with the rest of the troops without being left outside. Everyone, from the Commander and her officers to the lowliest recruit, all eat three meals a day together, in this room. 'Leave your rank at the door' is the common slogan, making the hall a place for everyone to act like a person, instead of a stiff-necked grunt.

Over breakfast the next morning, Sae tells you about his life, in a middle-class family stuffed into one of the many apartment houses in the Capitol sprawl. As you suspected, his mother was expecting a girl, and, since he just happened to have rather feminine features for most of his life, he could never get away from that name. He kept physical violence as a last resort, favoring subtle magical tricks to get back at his tormentors. On one of his worse days, he actually managed to seal a larger boy inside the ground, with only his head exposed. Laughing, he explains how he joined the army to escape prosecution for assault, and ended up here, a Captain with all the respect he never got as a civilian.

With what power they have remaining at the end of the next day, the mages build you a place to sleep, adjoined to the cathedral. You insisted it be modest, and that's what you got. An alcove with a stone bed just big enough to stretch out in, and an armor/weapon rack. Until you get the hang of things, you've been assigned to focus on channeling, as the unit operates as a single entity, combining their power to act as one, for efficiency's sake.

Your life is fairly simple here; you wake at dawn, study most of the day, when you're not eating or exercising, and occasionally assist the mage unit while Sae assesses your progress. He estimates that you'll be ready to take your place as the 'ninth man' in about another week, but it'll be months before you can equal them in energy, at least with earth magic. As Ceril said, you'll be in the service until there is no longer a threat of incursion. You're viewed as a type of auxiliary, obtaining release once circumstances are better. And once you are released, you'll be a full citizen, with the support of Ceril, if no one else, should you find yourself in trouble.

A question. Does it seem that Earth-type physics is what you might call the natural state of the world, with magic used to alter it? Or do things function completely due to magic and elemental power?

If the former, then we might want to bring up the tendency of heat to move from hot regions to cold regions, and suggest the idea of creating channels of colder rock leading away from the filaments. Hopefully, those would at least weaken them and force the Forusian mages to expend more power; ideally, we could either disperse them completely or redirect them into Forus.

The eight humans get to ride horses, but there is nothing here that can support your weight, while still moving fast enough. To compensate, Marc sends you off with a charm on your legs that will let you keep up without killing yourself. For half a day, at least.

Most of the garrison troops exit the main gate, on horses or marching in step. Your unit, as well as the five other mounted ones, will be first on site, scouting from a secure position while the thirteen foot units come up behind.

It takes two hours for you to reach the incursion. It's extremely close to the town, and there are rock spiders flowing up out of the ground like a granite wave, all headed for Fairnest.

You nod, stepping past the horsemen, moving forward, until you're directly in front of the oncoming swarm. You throw up your hands...

Spikes of clearest ice erupt from the ground, thrusting up into the spider ranks and catching them on the underside, the immense cold causing their superheated bodies to crack and shatter, letting their liquid internals pour out upon the dirt. Forty of them die to your first attack, but the rest simply go around the spikes, splitting into two groups that converge on the other side.

With a simple gesture, you wipe out another bunch of them, unfastening your crossbow and bringing it up, an ice arrow forming in the lock as your finger reaches the trigger. As the spiders converge again, you shoot, spearing three of them with the same bolt and blowing apart twenty more when it explodes.

The first wave has been halved. The horsemen are going in, moving down the flanks of the swarm, smashing them apart with well-placed blows from their spears. Still, the things keep moving, not even bothering to counterattack. You fire two more arrows and stow your crossbow, taking your halberd to finish the rest. With the horsemen moving up behind, the remaining spiders will be trapped between you and them.

With a single swing, you catch all but one, the MS blades carving them apart easily. The last is struck by a bolt from behind you, and it staggers into the grass, bleeding magma. Another bolt finishes it.

The next wave is incoming. There are at least five hundred. Even from here, you can see the pit expanding. Demons are crawling out of the sides, pulling themselves over the edge with quickly cooling claws. The infantry will arrive at your position in about forty-five minutes. It's doubtful you'll hold out that long.

Captain Sae pulls his hood over his head, and the others do the same. “We might have to do this on our own, Maya! Clear us a path!”

You charge, halberd in hand, as the horsemen move in the opposite direction, to chase down and clear out what you've missed. The spiders rush toward you, heedless of your strength, cleaved apart in droves by the fine black blades. Your unit follows closely, taking what shots they can, sticking behind to avoid the wave as it recombines behind you.

The Demons are approaching directly ahead, but at least there are no more spiders coming out of the pit. The wave breaks before you, smashed into nothing, as four units of horsemen mop them up down the line. The last unit is with you, ready to protect the mages as they go in to seal the pit.

Six Demons ahead, all normal-size. A gigantic black fist grasps the edge of the pit, hauling an enormous beast upward.

The remaining five advance quickly, forcing you and the others to fall back further as jets of flame burst from their eyes. The elemental, entirely black except for its three glowing eyes, steps out of the pit, and begins to walk toward you, shaking the ground with every step.

Its massive bulk towers over you, at least twice your size. A fresh wave of spiders is beginning to emerge from the pit behind it.

Bolts from the horsemen fell another Demon, spiked metal ripping through its brain. The other four are heading toward you, ignoring their path and the other attackers. They unleash their power, bathing you with magical fire just as Sae uses all the power he can spare to shield you. A thick stone wall extends up out of the ground in front of you, and you fire through the only slot, singed but all right. Another demon goes down.

Half the Demons are down. The elemental is approaching, spiders swarming up around it, converging in a third wave in front of it. You crank the crossbow with all your might, falling back as the Demons slice through the wall with their Magma Steel claws. Their thin, sharp legs carry them easily over the rubble, and they prepare to fire again. A well-placed bolt silences another, while you unsling your halberd, ducking to the side.

Close. Twin, bright beams of white strike the trees behind you, incinerating them. The horsemen circle around you, coming up on the Demon to your right. With one simultaneous action, you thrust your halberd through the skull of one, while four lances penetrate the other, killing them both instantly.

The mages fire vainly at the elemental, trying to stay out of danger. Their bolts sink into its liquid skin, doing nothing. It continues to approach, even as one of the arrows hits an eye, melting on contact. The spiders are almost upon you.

You tell the horsemen to do the best they can with the spiders. When you've taken care of the greater threat, you'll come back around and finish them off. They're not about to argue.

You're running, your heavy boots leaving deep prints in the earth as the horsemen strike the third wave, moving alongside it and whittling it down. You cross the oncoming group, using a momentary flash of your aura to crack thirty of them, letting them bleed slowly as they pile up, falling into the dirt.

The Captain gets moving. The mages circle the edge of the incursion, getting closer and closer as the elemental walks toward you, ignoring them. With a quick, fluid motion, you give it your best shot.

Its eyes explode from the inside out, sending a shower of magma everywhere as the orange orbs are torn apart. It stops, gripping its amorphous head with its hands, and points toward you, groaning horribly. Its great, black fingers sweep across its face, and three bright yellow spheres flare into being, pulsing with a reddish light. So much for that.

    Roll 1d20 for dodge.

You roll to the side, narrowly avoiding the shimmering beam of orange death that shoots from the elemental's eyes. The trees are set aflame and the grass turns to ash as the beast clears the forest for two hundred feet straight forward. You run as quickly as you can, thanking Marc for his wonderful charm as you jump over a fallen log just before it's incinerated by another blast.

The elemental follows you, turning in place, burning a wide area right behind you. The mages are already in place, the symbols on the backs of their hoods glowing bright green as they prepare to seal the pit. The third wave of spiders has emptied the tunnel, at least, so as long as you can keep this thing occupied, they'll be able to work unrestrained.

This time, you use as much power as you dare, taking a brief second to focus, imagining an immense diamond of ice forming inside its skull. The patterns align, and the cold drains from your body as the elemental's head explodes, taking a good portion of its neck and hands with it.

It reels, but it stays upright. Its liquid skin is already reforming, bringing back its eyes.

Now might be a good time to test that 'elemental-busting' light.

You take out your halberd, swinging it like a madman as you jump up, slicing the elemental's midsection. The blade glows sunlight-yellow, cleaving through the beast's fluid body, deconstructing it. As you land, completing the strike, the elemental staggers backward, its great hands clamping against its abdomen, frantically trying to stop the thick, bubbling black seeping from the gaping wound.

Slowly, the cut continues to widen, creeping around its chest and opening its skin, letting more and more of its insides spill out upon the grass. Steam pours from the center of it as it stumbles further and further back, until it reaches the edge of the pit, now almost closed. Its foot catches the edge, and it falls, separating into halves as the last of its skin gives way.

The elemental's liquid form seeps into the ground while the mages seal the incursion, using all of their power to close the tunnel. With a loud, resounding boom, the earth comes together, and it's over.

Only two of the Demons were carrying an appreciable horde, but the total haul is still quite extensive, with several geodes and a fair bit of diamonds. After checking to see that the mages are alright, you take off running again, hoping to catch up to the spiders before they reach the town.

It takes several minutes for you to make the distance, but you see that most of the wave has already been destroyed. The ground is littered with broken rock, as well as puddles of solidifying magma. The horsemen are up ahead, still keeping up, slashing away at the remaining fifty or so. Fairnest's wall is visible in the distance, but the spiders will never get there. The infantry detachment is moving toward you, marching in step.

With the last of your magical energy, you sweep the spiders upward with a blast of cool air, encasing as many as you can in thin balls of ice, letting the rest be impaled on the horsemens' lances. The spider-balls go up, and up, into the sky, arranging themselves in the pattern of a sword. You detonate the ice, exploding the rocky creatures in blasts of light. Shards of ice and stone pummel the ground on either side of you, well out of the way of any humans.

The soldiers cheer. You bow, hitting the grass with one knee. You're exhausted again.

The rest of your unit comes up behind you a few minutes later, riding at a leisurely pace. The Captain nods to you, smiling faintly. The others look like they're about to fall asleep.

You join up with them, returning to formation. The armor is a massive weight on your back, but you'll make it. You're looking forward to a good rest after this. All units form up, organizing into a double-line march, infantry in front. You can hear some of the footmen lambasting the mounted soldiers for not leaving them anything to fight, and laughing about being 'only a morale force'. Fortunately, casualties were unexpectedly low, thanks in part to you. Five injuries, none serious. Everyone should be back to their best in a few short days.

All units march past Fairnest with their heads turned toward the wall, waving at the tower guards and the townspeople climbing up to the top. Most of them are quite surprised to see a Frost Giant among the garrison troops, and some are genuinely frightened, but the majority seem to accept your presence after a moment. This little army has a reputation, after all. You're just glad that no one is screaming 'don't eat me'. It can get a bit old.

Upon your return, after a slight rest, you draft a letter to Dreamwood, in the smallest print you can manage. Even the short message still fills the page. You let your people know that everything is going well, you fit right in, despite your size, and you managed to finish a fight with all your limbs intact. You sign it, and hand it off to Ceril for the weekly post batch. Before you go to bed, you call up Hretmar, converse for awhile, and then transmit as much of the news as you can to Vasian. It's difficult to keep the link to the library open for very long, but you get the gist of it. The god's probably going to be swamped with messages by tomorrow morning.
