You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war and magic. You are a defender of the weak. You are a force for good.

    Last Post in Previous Thread:

You finish the meal, trying to keep your eyes open. The elders take the new people into the Hall to discuss sleeping arrangements, and you can hear the scholar telling them jovially that he prefers to sleep around books. You figure the others will be put up in the inn until they can move into one of the extra houses.

The path to the cavern is an easy one to tread, and you lower yourself down the wall with swift, quiet movements, dropping soundlessly to the floor and resting your head against your rocky pillow, whispering the incantation that brings you contact. You pull the soft white light with straining arms, bringing it to you.

You speak with the god for as long as you can, asking him about the newcomers and their thoughts, especially those of the scholar. He says he was watching everything with great amusement, and he especially enjoyed your impromptu sculpting. The farmers, carpenter, and children were fearful at first but came around by the end, put at ease by your friendly personality and the pleasantness with which everyone speaks to you. Vasian is hard to read, even for a god. He is always thinking of something, always deep in thought. His mind jumps from point to point like a jackrabbit, never staying in the same place for long. He is much like the twins, but with a brain so finely tuned that he could out-think five of them, were he so inclined. It is a shame he is so old, for a mind like that only comes around so often.

On the magic front, Hretmar is impressed with your success in scrying, and gives you a few tips on how to visualize the world in a different way, to shorten the distance your sight must travel. The heat pump idea is a strange one, but it might work, if you believe it can work. If the magic of cold removes energy from an object, then perhaps the same magic might put it back, into another. That's treading dangerously close to the sphere of fire, but it might still be possible. Finally, he has made some progress with the shrinking spell, but there are still some kinks to work out. Your strength and endurance would probably decrease much more than you'd think, and you would probably suffer from a bit of disorientation while your mind got used to your body being human-size again, for example.

In the blasted North, there are creatures of all kinds, many of them far larger than you. The Frost Giants normally move fast enough to have no need of mounts, but when they do use them, they favor an animal called an Envid, a six-limbed monstrosity that can leap great distances, and resembles a jumping spider. Its eighteen eyes can sense the slightest bit of heat can any direction, and its gaping jaws can scoop up an animal the size of a polar bear and crush its bones like they were twigs.

You shake their hands, a humorous gesture because of your size, but one that seems to smooth things over a bit. The carpenter agrees reluctantly to let his kids use you as a taxi, and up they go.

From your shoulders, they can see over the tops of all the buildings, which they enjoy immensely. When you reach the Hall's courtyard, they plead with you to let them go around again sometime, and you say you'll think about it, before setting them down with a smile.

Several. One of the early cultures believed that the world was hewn from rock by giant masons, and given life by their masters, the gods of farming. Another thought that this planet was only one of many, forged in the ethereal fire of another plane, to be used as a weapon in the coming apocalypse.

The book details the arrival of the first groups of humans from an unknown place, and their growth into civilizations in the many corners of the world. It is difficult to tell if anything in it is actually true, but it contains references to many other books, most of which you do not have.

    >>8068122
From one of the small maps inside the book, you trace your region, in the far North, and consult the text. The prevailing myth here is/was the story of a triad of gods who ruled the three elements, and were dispersed by the arrival of a fourth, who brought a new energy: fire. The wars between these gods whittled down the material plane into isolated pockets of earth, water, and wind, which you know as planets.

You ask Kel about migrations, and he informs you that a fair amount of forest creatures, mostly those which lack enormous quantities of fur, travel South when the storms come. The bears and others like them find places to hibernate, and the Averrons become even slower than usual, though their vast fat layer protects them from the cold.

There is one animal that actually comes North during the winter, for its breeding season. It is called a Subulgid, and it is the spitting image of a vulture, except for its white feathers, great size, and preference for eating berries.

Anything you need for magic, be it spellbooks, wands, spell components, or artifacts, will be sold in the larger towns. Fain has two 'wizard' shops, which carry all manner of things, though they are often prohibitively expensive and rather weak compared to the things Lark already has.

Jerith has several small items with him, such as a tiny book of incantations which calm the mind, a short, wide wand that can be strapped to the wrist and emits light, and ten small marbles which he says contain spirits of luck.

Winters can be quite severe, with storms that rain down ice and freezing rain. The weather is worst in the middle of winter, with the village occasionally getting enough snow to cover a house entirely, considering drifting. That's rare, though. These people know their limits, and are very unlikely to be caught outside when there's a real risk. However, when it gets bad, a human without plenty of fur-line clothing could experience hypothermia in minutes.

There's unlikely to be a lot of exciting stuff happening with winter coming on, and with a lot of snow and cold it'll be much harder for anyone other than us to work outside. I will make a 'strategic' map after the end tonight.

A day's travel North is the border, with a line of watchtowers running across it, just outside the forest. A little to the West of the town is the chasm which leads to your cavern. Just past this cavern is a rock face and a large pit, where the town's quarry is. South, the stream branches to feed a small lake on the Western side, and there is a swamp somewhat further down on the Eastern side of the stream.

The hub town Fain is to the Southwest, at the end of the road, a day's travel one-way. There is a garrison very near there. Three small towns stand at various distances from Fain, all within a five-day round-trip radius from Dreamwood, your town. Far, far South the stream feeds a sizable river, and eight days to the West there is a large fortification.

A maple orchard would be a good idea, really. And a plant to boil the sap of the juices.

Maybe we could even use it to train our heat manipulation skills. We'd build piles of ice by focusing heat from all around us onto the metal boilers, and end up with delicious syrup.

Making Maple Syrup is actually quite easy. It just takes patience. First you go out and find some trees. Once you find some, you pound in a tap, from which the sap will trickle into a bucket attached underneath. Check back every day or two to collect the sap.

Once you've got a large batch of sap collected, you pour it into a really big pot and boil it. This removes most of the water, leaving sugary goodness. The boiling process takes several days. It's important to, once the pot has boiled down to about half full, pour the contents into a smaller pot. You then boil it in the smaller pot and fill the big once with more fresh sap.

Because all of the cash crops are not native to this region or climate, and we would likely loose money on the investment. Besides, there are far better ways to make money. Publishing a book with some of the stuff we've taught them, for one. getting to the point where people are coming into the town and spending money, thus giving us an economy. The village is already completely self-sustaining. We don't need to try to plant a bunch of crops that will likely not even grow here to make money, since furs and such sell just as well.

Yup, barley is one of the most common grains used to make beer. Also you don't make the beer OUT of hops, they are used in small quantities to give beer the distinct bitterness. Just wondering if there's something we can grow out of the ground that would give us an advantage. I mean, if we become a village that's famous for something - like the French wine growing areas these days - it can only be to our advantage. It's a name asset that won't go away.

I don't mean a poison or drug, but some kind of ingredient that would give it special flavour. That french wine region thing sounds like a good idea. We could have 'special maple syrup found only in here and nowhere else', it'd be one hell of a selling point.

It's your day off. A time for you to finally relax and stop working, socialize with the residents of your town and maybe have some fun. Not that building up isn't a riot, but it can get a little tiring.

At breakfast, you introduce the newcomers to Jack and his quest for a portal home, the dickery of Aku and the antics of the Scotsman. Aki makes an appearance to once again prevent her father's enemy from making it back to his own time, though she hesitates, almost letting him reach it.

You begin giving the children rides, ferrying them to the fields and back while they pretend they're riding a dragon or a flying ship.

After their parents suggest strongly that they get down and let you rest, you resume your position by the Hall, where Vasian immediately poses a question.

With a bit of manipulation, you could puppet them, getting them to slide slowly around and swing their wobbly appendages. It's been eleven days. A you-sized bow has been completed, strung, and broken several times already. You've repaired it as best you can with alchemy, and attempted to strengthen it, but it's not working very well. It shoots beautifully, but you have to be careful how much tension you put on it. At least it's nice to be able to throw arrows around without launching them yourself, since that can get tiring. You've already figured out how to cause them to split to hit a wide area, shatter on contact, and airburst into a shower of shards. Guiding them in flight is problematic, though.

The new people are fitting in nicely, despite the suspicion just beneath the surface. Vasian has been organizing the library according to his own system, which makes everything much easier to find. He has also recommended several books for you to pick up, when possible. The farmers are learning herbology and rudimentary chemistry, and the carpenter has been taught how to operate the sawmill. The children, of course, are in school, where one of the twins is teaching them how to read.

The next trip to Fain netted a load of books, mostly novels, with a text on gems and their worth, several textbooks, and all of Vasian's recommendations that Bem could find. There is precious little science out here in the rural districts, compared to the main cities, but it's more than these people have ever seen. Pots were acquired and taps were made, and you took a few days to go sap-hunting. With Hretmar's guidance you found the closest thing to Maple trees. The sap is not as sweet, but that can be changed with berries and some of the Beet sugar.

The bathouse's hot section is in and connected to the furnace, though it doesn't get 'hot' so much as 'slightly warmer'. A small laboratory of sorts is up near the plant processing building, and it is there that experiments take place. When Vasian is not in the library, he and Lark combine their knowledge there. They are attempting to produce an additive that will give the syrup you've collected a unique, pleasant taste. So far they've made it sweeter, but not much different.

You've ramped down your practice of combat magic and focused on the track-erase charm and the heat pump, with a particular focus on increasing your magical stamina. The charm, when active, causes the snow to part before you and resume its position after you pass, though it only lasts for about an hour or so before needing to be recast. At Hretmar's urging, you've been extra careful when playing with heat, but you have actually managed to shunt the heat removed with your ice spells into another object, instead of it being lost somewhere in the void. It was extremely tiring and the effect was limited, but it's a start.

Parts of the palisade have been strengthened, you've been attempting to learn to sew, and you put on a short play, ad-libing an absurd amount but getting through it without embarrassing yourself too badly. It was a cross between Macbeth, Samurai Jack, and Star Wars, with a little bit of Discworld thrown in. Some of the villagers were laughing so hard you thought they might have a heart attack.

You woke up this morning covered in snow. An enormous amount blew or fell down the chasm and piled up on you, but you hardly noticed in your sleep. After brushing yourself off you climbed up into the forest, and were astounded at the sight of the town. It looks almost like a snowglobe that didn't stop shaking. A whirl of snow and ice has engulfed the village, a tornado of white that obscures your vision. There's a fine, white light shining into your mind, a tiny point like the one you see when you contact Hretmar.
