You are Maya Terrasdottir, a human-turned Frost Giant stuck in a fantasy world of war, magic, and heavy, armored beasts. You are a Demon-slayer. You are a mage.

    Last Post in Previous Thread:

You build yourself a long, long list of things you might want, if they can be gotten without trouble, and Bem gets it all down on a piece of parchment, scrawling away with a crude wooden pen. After you've finished, he takes a quick breakfast, and gathers a few farmers to help him with the cart. They trundle off down the South road, on their way to a switch that will take them directly to Grennet, the next hub town.

For the next ten days, you continue working at a feverish pace, focusing the first of your efforts on establishing a genuine lumber mill. A waterwheel is built, axles are cut, gears are assembled, and a new sawblade, with alchemically sharpened teeth, is installed in a wood-and-stone structure through which entire logs can be run. Your projects have already clear-cut an area of forest just large enough for a fifth farm field, and you're on your way to putting in a sixth. Work so far has been on a rather small scale, putting up tiny buildings with a single, immutable purpose, but as the town's industrial capacity expands, so will your plans.

Another two houses go up with the aid of the sawmill, and sawdust insulation soon fills the walls of the first two. During whatever free time you can manage to squeeze out of the day, you alternate between learning, teaching, and practicing, training body and mind in one go, while ramping up the power of your magic. You can cast three normal ice 'spells' a day without tiring yourself out, and you've finally figured out how to increase the aura's duration, though it requires much more extra power than you think it should.

Bem returns with a full cart, pulled by a strong, healthy-looking cow, and carrying a chicken in each arm, with a rooster not far behind. To the wide eyes of every peasant in the village, he unveils his precious cargo. Books on magic, history, monster lore, bowmaking, herbs, enchantment, and several other topics, along with a full blacksmithing manual in three volumes. Five chickens, a rooster, a cow, high-quality farming tools, another full set of smithing tools, this time a bit better than the bargain bin stuff the crew's been playing with, and a new anvil and bellows round out the first part of Bem's haul.

For the next, bags upon bags of all different kinds of seeds, among them this world's versions of tobacco, coffee, cocoa, barley, and oats, along with several panes of green glass, three crossbows, enough cloth to make you a whole new set of clothes and then some, and a stack of oversized sheets of paper. Aside from all that, he brings news; the war goes well, with Perin occupying large swaths of territory and cutting down all defenses. The unit one of the town's youths was assigned to captured several fortifications without support, only taking 20% casualties. And, to top it off, the search for the lone Frost Giant was called off weeks ago, cited as a waste of men and time. As you sigh with relief, Bem pulls a small reddish gem out of his pocket, saying that he had a little left over after filling the cart. Then he drops a bag of gold the size of his head into Sahl's hands. You've got currency. Real, honest coin.

    And you've barely gotten started.

    Sweetness, FG quest is up!

Alright, it is good that we are no longer being hunted, that takes quite a lot of pressure of us, and also allows us to put all our effort into making the village prosperous, no fear of having to pack up and run the fuck away.

The saw mill is a great step forward as well. The saw dust will serve as a fine insulation, that is certain.

We should see why Bem got those huge slabs of paper. Did he get them for us, with the intents to give us something we can use as a diary? Or perhaps a spell book?

we should use the paper to write down some diagrams of different types of buildings, information on how to set up tech such as electromagnets, and anything we know about health and economic theory.
that way if we have to leave the town the elder can still read about all the things we know about and keep the ball rolling.

Ah, must have missed the one.

Well, I suggest we use them to make a diary of sorts, create a "Fictional" tale of a strange world, far ahead of our times here, with iron beasts that charge around on four round feet, that consume the black oil of the earth, and travel upon roads made of stone that stretch from one horizon to the other. Of strange knowledges, of incredible weapons that can kill a man with a thunder crack and a puff of smoke, or metal birds that fly through the air with motionless wings, or great ships that travel beneath the waves, only to surface on the other side of the world a month later. Of man's journey to the heavens, and the discovery that it is a cold, empty void, filled with uncountable points of light.

We could make it into a best seller.

Also, the book of monster lore. Only look for things that are known to exist around this type of area. We do not need knowledge on desert or ocean dwelling creatures, but some temperate forest creatures would be useful to know about.

At night would be a bad idea, unless we left the village to practice safely in the forest. Having the temperature drop 40 degrees suddenly could spell death for some people. And since this is a magical effect, I imagine simple things like walls and insulation will not stop it from dropping the temperature inside of buildings.

Hmm... Since we practice within a cavern, maybe we should try and decrease the time for our aura, but increase the temperature drop. See if we can make ourselves a nice little ice cave to study in.

Sudden, massive burst of cold, freeze the very stone around us. I am sure it will be quite a drain on us, but if we could produce an effect that could drop the temperature of the surrounding area by a huge amount, we could have a very impressive frost area of effect spell, centered on ourself.

It has been eight days. It is now the fifth month, and the Flashweed is growing nicely. Three more houses have gone up, and you have begun construction on the bathroom, laying a foundation and putting in pipes made from Averron chitin. Raik is working overtime on the forge, turning all that you've managed to collect into something useful. He's gotten a lot better, as have the farmers helping him. With the Demon-skin gloves and aprons they wear, they're quite well protected, despite the heat.

You have found the books to contain an immense amount of knowledge about things you have never even thought about, and others you never knew existed. The text of magic theory weaves a framework of faith and focus, explaining the principle of the strong mind. To be able to concentrate and visualize despite distractions is a great asset, and to truly believe that magic can do what you need it to is crucial. Something as simple as doubt, low confidence in your own power, can bring down a fragile spell.

In the tome of monster lore you find large sections dedicated to creatures dwelling in or around the forest. From tiny, harmless things like hypnotic snakes to the enormous walking towers of the Forusian woods. There are a vast amount of animals you have never seen, many of which you don't really want to see. One passage goes into great detail about the Scavengers, tracing the path of a swarm of infinitesimal creatures that seem to act as one.

The herbology and farming books tell you plenty of things you didn't know, filled as they are with diagrams and charts, designs for tools and the occasional useful spell. There are quite a large number of herbs and spices that can be gathered in the forest, most with a useful effect. Natural anesthetics and psychadelics, potent sterilizers and healing leaves, all the things you would expect in a land of magic. As for the collection of maps, it is dated, but still valid, marking out the majority of Perin's territory from the Northern edge to the Forusian border. If you need to find your way to the Capitol, it will be invaluable.

Your continuing study has focused on the aura, increasing its duration, range, and power. You can freeze the ground solid within a short radius, and lower the temperature a hundred degrees in a small area. You can even extend it in a line instead of a sphere, freezing a straight path to a target. You're getting better and better at this.

Lark has a whole bunch of miscellaneous magical items, including a few spellbooks. The glove you're using to practice Alchemic Reconstruction is one of the simpler, weaker ones, not quite up to providing PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER. If you think you're ready to try something more complex, he has plenty of options.

There are area enchantments, like your aura, various attack forms, construction-focused magic like that the glove uses, elemental spells that mold the earth, air, and water, summoning types that pull beings from other planes or create them on the spot, pretty much everything.

It all depends on what you want to do.

You ask about a spell that would allow you to shape stone, possibly assisting you with construction. Lark takes you to his hut, pulling open the thick wooden door while you wait beside it, going over building plans in your mind. After a minute or two of rummaging he returns, with an ordinary-looking rock.

"Same basic principle as the glove," he says, handing it to you, "Where alchemy gives you the power to manipulate composition on a small scale, elemental magic does it on a large scale, twisting the stuff of the land itself."

The small stone settles easily into your palm. You take a deep breath, remembering the feeling of reconstruction, the burst of green light that accompanies your alchemy, focusing your mind on the constant, slow-changing shapes of the ground around you. A soft, brownish light leaks through your clenched fist as your mind journeys over the surface of the land, searching for something pliable.

The stone speaks to you, but not like the tablet. Its voice is exceedingly quiet, benevolent instead of malicious. It guides you to a tiny spot just in front of you, and you feel a small shiver run up your arm as the ground hears your order.

A miniscule hole opens in the soft earth, and a long, thin rod of stone shoots up out of it, curving around and punching back into the ground a few feet away. The glow fades.

    You've made an arch.

For the past thirteen days you have worked feverishly, raising no less than six more houses and laying down the pipes and foundation of the bathroom. The villagers have finished tilling the fifth field and begun extending the irrigation system, while you clear space for the sixth field with your mighty axe. Things are taking shape around you, even as the giant sheets of paper Bem so graciously gifted to you fill with the knowledge of your world, accompanied by the best drawings you can manage with oversized hands and meager skill.

Lark has taught you much, showing you how to twist your understanding of earth and ice into a common idea of the elements, giving you training in the shape and modification of the substance of the material plane. Earth, air, fire, and water are basic. They are an underlying pattern, a single facet of the stuff of life. You have been working with water for a long time now, just in its solid, brittle form. Now you are learning to mold it like the earth, to move a solid like a liquid in your hands.

The earth forms beneath your mind, moving at your command. It is much like water, much like air, varied in its substance but always linked by something beyond your sight. Your cavern's walls are like soft butter to your touch, flowing around corners, through tunnels, into the mold you make for it. The understanding has come easily, but the talent is still lacking. You have managed to seal the entrance to one tunnel, and practiced smoothing over the craters. But it is difficult, to force yourself to see the tough, splintering, cracking stone as nothing more than an element, to be wielded by trained thoughts.

You have explored a short distance into the forest while musing on the nature of the planes, keeping the book of maps close to your eyes. There is plenty to be had here, if you know where to look. Burrows and dens of animals infused with a soft, natural magic, trees that bear fruit with potent, sometimes explosive effects, areas where the earth-stone tells you valuable minerals lie just beneath the surface. The forest holds much more than you thought, always just out of sight. You can't quite mine yet, but you're getting there.

Alchemy is a powerful talent, but your progress is slow. You seem to be more able to see and manipulate patterns on a large scale than a small one, taking to tearing apart mountains more readily than fixing a broken axle. Still, it is good to have experience in more areas than one. Your aura grows more and more mighty by the day, dropping the mercury to the floor across a quarter-mile. Before long, you'll be able to cast it over the whole town, if you find it necessary.

The chickens have been laying eggs for a while now. Three have hatched, bringing the town three healthy, golden chicks.

Three of those this village lost to the draft have come home. Only children when they were taken, they are now men, battle-scarred and happy to be home at last.

Stories of the war they share with everyone, with the Intelligence men providing background and small details while the Infantryman talks of straight-up combat against an enemy that can throw waves of men around like nothing.

He speaks of armored war beasts knocking over siege towers, trampling whole horses under their massive paws, shaking the earth with their every step. Mages whose eyes glow bright orange, shooting fire from their palms and calling great pillars of flame from heaven. Fortresses protected by crossbows the size of houses, firing bolts that explode into molten shrapnel that decimates everything around.

He tells of the day his hand was crushed under the ledge of an overturned wagon, leaving him without three of his digits. His left eye seems to shimmer in the low light as he shows you the place where a tiny piece of steel from a mage's knife punctured it, working itself under the surface.

The world is a horrible, frightening place, filled with wonders and demons of all kinds. The war rages in the South and West as Perin's mighty cavalry swarm across the border, breaking the Forusian resistance at the point of a sword. Resources, as always, are hard to come by, but as more and more of Forus's farmland is captured, the balance is shifting. The big cities are as bright as ever, and the Capitol itself a shining beacon, undiminished in glory. The all-encompassing despair is only apparent in the very rural areas, where amusements are few and there is little to mask the stench of battle.

As for the town, it is better than ever, far more than what they expected to come home to. One of the twins actually goes so far as to thank you, for, no matter your race, you have brought happiness to the people of the village, and prosperity beyond hope. They will do whatever they can to help, and if the talents they were forced to learn are of some use to the town, they will gladly use them.

Education continues at a slow pace, but as a group the townspeople have improved markedly. They can read short, simple words, but falter often. It will take years to bring them up to proficiency. Only the elders and the twins can read, though Mal and the infantryman are at about a fourth grade level.

As for the women, all are due within the next three or four months.

The great strength of the Averron has been put to use in many areas, such as farming, construction, and war. However, its low intelligence, its great weight, and its need for constant feeding, make it a poor choice in comparison to certain animals found further South. One of the most ingenious uses was as a counterweight for a crane. A few of them can balance almost anything that can be lifted, and they can easily be coaxed forward with certain kinds of leaves.

Should start practicing healing magic in the near future. Use plants to begin with, since you can injure them, and if you can't patch them up, no guilt.

Start with simple things, a leaf, a branch, a stem, and once we can heal those without any flaws, what so ever, we can try to use our magic on more active lifeforms.

Lark has plenty of skill with healing, as it's practical to know when you're on your own in the wilderness, or simply a ways from a monastery, temple, or clinic. In principle, light healing is just like alchemy, but it gets more complicated when damage is extensive.

Ask the village elders who fought in the war to talk on our behalf with the returned men privately.
Ask the returned men their names
How many other men from the village are still in the army?
    What is their general sentiment?
What did the twins do as information analisysts?
Can one of the men who recently returned home act as a 'face' for the village, and procure more exotic things for the village without attracting outside attention?

I think we should find a person who is good at dealing with people, teach him math, and now we basically have a merchant we can use to boost our gold reserves by selling our "exotic" items as magic items (batteries, electromagnets), and as word of this spreads artisans, and mages will flock to our town.

That is a good point. Given the description of the battlefield, we probably will end up dead fast if we ever go to the front lines. Also, I an not sure if we will be able to get around our inherent weakness to fire with magic. We might have to invest in some demon-hide armor to protect us if/when we go adventuring.

Even if we are opening up a "store" for these goods in a far-off trading city, people will be curious where these items are coming from. It won't take much detective work to trace it back to the town. We would have to go through a lot of diversionary tactics (re-routing shipping, hidden cargo, ect) to keep from being found out, regardless of who was selling the wares.

You have a talk with the elders after supper, asking them politely if they would smooth things over with the returning soldiers. You don't want there to be any bad blood between you and anyone else in the village. They are sympathetic, but suggest that it would be unwise to be impatient. These men have spent the last ten years away from their families, fighting a war against a nation with which they have no quarrel, and they have come home to find a Frost Giant eating at their table. Regardless of your contributions, there is a stigma there that will take time to overcome.

The twins, Gav and Cain, were part of a 'think tank' that was fed troop movements, field observations, deployment lists, and the like, and asked to work backwards, figuring enemy plans from their present results. Their successes were few, but those few resulted in massive upsets, allowing the forces of Perin to predict enemy positions and counter them handily. Gav and Cain have been trained to think strategically, and are now able to engineer plans and counter-plans with only a few bits of data.

The infantryman, Eron, fought up-close in an assault unit, charging enemy defenders in a flank position, and cutting them down with a hail of bolts and quick, decisive slashes. He is incredibly strong, with amazing reflexes and skill with a crossbow surpassing even Kel's. He is nearly fearless, capable of following even the most suicidal orders, and has been repeatedly commended for his actions, in a unit with a casualty rate in excess of 60%. He is understandably less enamored with the government and the military than the twins, but will obey their commands even if it means his life.

Any of the three, only a fraction of the 47 taken so far, would be a perfect choice as a stealthy liason, avoiding suspicion with the virtue of a nameless face. No one knows them now, so they can easily acquire things no villager can. As for the propensity of Forus to rely on fire, there is enough Demon hide and organ-skin to make gloves, boots, and possibly a shirt for you, but nowhere near enough for a full fireproof suit. It is possible that you could use your aura as a shield, though.

Like Lark said, we just need to be patient. It took us awhile to completely win over the town. I am sure we can do the same with the soldiers, but trying to force it will not help. I am sure we will get a chance to prove ourselves to them. Keep in mind that they effectively just got here, and are battle-weary men who have likely been battling monstrosities of the same nature as us (minus the tg mind, of course).

one where the water enters the wheel from the top its about the best we can do before moving onto turbine based applications. We don't have enough of a "head" to produce large amounts of power micro hydro would still work but would require serious re engineering of the terrain upstream.

Turbines are a little out of the tech range at the moment. The clearances required and the integrity of the blades would not be doable with the metal working skills at hand. I don't like the idea of a stress crack forming in the metal at several thousand RPMs.
