Three hundred cycles ago, your species achieved total bio-technological fusion. Free from the limitations of your crude, natural bodies, a new age of prosperity as biomechanical intelligences dawned for your kind. Unfortunately, your homeworld had room for only so much infrastructure; and the ever-growing number of minds demanded more resources and living space to develop.

Thus, the colony ships were developed. Hundreds of massive, interstellar starships, each housing millions of minds, were launched into space. Each of these composite superorganisms was launched to a different, resource-rich planet, armed with all the knowledge and power needed to turn their destinations into a new homeworld.

    You are Colony 13.

You awaken to discover that something has gone horribly wrong. For some reason, the landing sequence did not initiate when you entered your target's atmosphere, and the collective was not awakened from its hibernation. Your ship is critically damaged, embedded in the floor of an alien ocean. According to your chronometers, you have lain dormant and broken on this alien seabed for five hundred cycles.

    Begin.

At the moment, you are part of the ship. You will need to make a body to move beyond it.

Your sensory equipment is badly damaged. The only sensors online are the short-ranged visual, kinetic, and thermal scanners. According to them, you are under several kilometers of murky water. Ambient temperature is 290 K. There is very little motion.

There are millions of individual consciousnesses aboard colony 13. You can be whoever you want. However, under current conditions, only a few hundred minds can be awake at a time.

    What means "pelican eel?"

At the moment, the only nanofactory that seems to be responding is one of the smaller tertiary ones. It is capable of producing the following biomechanisms:

OBSERVER: this small, blimplike construct is slow moving and fragile, but carries a decent array of sensory devices. It is capable of floating in most liquid or gaseous environments. It can house up to one consciousness.

LABORER: A hardy, crustacean-like biped with appendages of fine manipulation. Landlocked and slow moving, but strong and durable in most environments and capable of doing manual labor and using tools or weapons.

To build anything else, you will need to either bring a bigger factory online, or learn more about the surrounding environment.

Why not have an internal laborer built then have the tertiary nanofactory produce repair nanomachines to repair the damaged area. Also an external scout in order to look fro thermal vents.

A little bit. Think Moya, but more of a vertical orientation rather than horizontal, and a little lumpier.

You drop the needed metals and plastics into the pool of nanogel. Soon, it spews forth one laborer and one observer. You can control these units remotely, or download minds into them to serve as pilots.

The laborer does not have the innate ability to conduct a chemical analysis. You will need to build a handheld sampler for it to do that.

    The observer, however, does.

Swooping down to the seabed, the observer takes a sample of the sand around your hull. Mostly silicate compounds, with trace amounts of metals and sulfur. There are also a LOT of organic compounds.

Taking a gulp of seawater, it detects considerable salinity, as well as the presence of numerous organic particles. Some of them may be microscopic life forms.

Hmm since the laborer is not able to do samples have it clean off the ships hull. And see if we could process the organic materials to help repair the ship. And what kind of power source does the ship use? And could an engineer mind in stasis speed up the repairs on the ship?
    >> Colony 13 01/09/10(Sat)03:32 No.7502557
    >>7502507

It will take the Observer a long time to do this. However, now that you have something to study, you can build a much more efficient ANALYZER. This small construct can house up to two minds, and is much better than Observers or handheld samplers at studying new materials.

It will take the observer at least one hundred man-hours to analyze the organics. An Analyzer would probably take fewer than thirty, but you'll need to build one first.

    Which will it be?

Your ship's power source is ZRBITE. This sophisticated, pico-mechanical material has both metallic and organic components, and can only be produced at great expenditure.

Your engineers can get to work on the ship as soon as you provide them with bodies and equipment to work with.

You send your laborer to walk across the parts of the hull that aren't buried. It appears that your ship is encrusted in layers of strange, brittle growths. Some of them appear to house tiny, living polyps that wave little tentacles in the water.

    Build a second observer.
Have one inspect the ship for damage and the other scout patrol around. If possible, build three and use them in pairs.

Your responsive nanofactory has enough materials to build 100 light constructs. So far, you have built 2. Since you are not doing anything power-intensive at the moment, your energy stores shouldn't be a problem until you decide to step up the game.

The ship is in terrible shape. Multiple hull breaches. Most of it isn't even responding, which is why you don't know the full scope of the situation. You will need to explore the wreck physically to learn more.

The only "millitary" units you can make at the moment are laborers. Laborers are armed with sharp, metallic claws, and can wield personal weapons. They aren't specialized at fighting, but they can fair decently against weak enemies.

The fuck? Was 4chan just down for a minute?

    >>7502699

    Your resources include the following:

BODY CONSTRUCTION: plastics, metals, and proteins used to build your bio-mechanical puppets. You can gather these from the surrounding environment. Some more advanced bodies will also take Ship Construction. You currently have 98 units accounted for.

SHIP CONSTRUCTION: hyper-dense and durable materials used to build things like your colony ship. You will need a PICO-FACTORY to make more. You do not have any of this in usable form at the moment.

ZRBITE: this is used as a battery of sorts. Making Zrbite requires an external energy source, as well as a ZRBITE LAB. One light unit consumes one unit of Zrbite each year. You have 98 units, not counting what you used already.
    >> Colony 13 01/09/10(Sat)04:11 No.7502827
    >>7502812

Addendum: you can use energy directly to power your ship, but Zrbite is needed to power anything else.

You currently have one FUSION REACTOR responsive. Fusion reactors are cheap and infinitely sustainable, but not very productive.

ANNHILATION REACTORS are expensive and unstable, but MUCH more productive.

Reactors of either sort can be used to make Zrbite if you build or restore a ZRBITE LAB.

4chan was on the fritz for a bit. We should have any available units scour the hull for damaged spots then repair the hull with the surrounding resources. Also what is the viability to build an underwater fusion reactor to supplement our power reserves. Alternately do we have any internal cargo bays that can be used.

Alright since we have at least one fusion reactor going how many other reactors to we have. Also can we get a complete load out of the ship, as in how many and what kind of systems are pre-built.
Also since we are able to manipulate matter at the pico- level can we use it to artificially transmute matter?
    >> Colony 13 01/09/10(Sat)04:32 No.7502871
    >>7502838

You have plenty of internal cargo bays. None of which are responding.

Building a new fusion reactor will cost 250 Body Construction, 50 Ship Construction, and 25 Zrbite. Alternately, you could excavate more of your ship and try to repair one of the damaged ones.

The exposed part of the hull has plenty of damaged spots. So far, you can see that one laboratory, one light nanofactory, and two weapon ports have been flooded. Fortunately, your ship is compartmentalized.

Colony 13 is a spacefaring colossus, equipped with all the latest and most advanced of everything. At full functionality, your ship boasts:

    3 tertiary nanofactories.
    1 secondary nanofactory.
    1 primary nanofactory.
    7 weapon ports.
    1 heavy sensor array.
    1 light sensor array.
    10 laboratories.
    10 cargo bays.
    3 maneuvering thrusters.
    1 gravitic interstellar thruster.
    6 fusion reactors.
    2 annhilation reactors.
    1 Zrbite lab.
    1 consciousness matrix.

Currently, the following facilities are responding:

    1 fusion reactor.
    1 tertiary nanofactory.
    1 cargo bay.
    1 light sensor array.
    1 weapon port.
1 consciousness matrix (at low power, only a few thousand of its millions of inhabitants are awake).

Your pico-technology is extremely limited. You can use it to build special materials needed for spaceflight, but that's about it. You cannot transmute matter.

    ... online.

Can we recycle constructs after they have been used? Is there a resource loss if and when this occurs?

If this is the case we need to speed this up; it is necessary to finish repairs as quickly as possible.

In any event, begin creating laborers (all constructs are to move and operate in teams of two in case of external problems) and begin sending them around to damaged sections. Nanofacs are secondary priority; first priority is to get internal and external sensors online to find out what the hell happened and our overall status.

Making these units will cost a total of 65 Body Construction and 65 Zrbite. It will take your nanofactory one hour to make each drone. Should you build any particular type first, alternate types, or what (if you don't clarify, I'll assume you want to alternate types until all your analyzers and observers have been made)?

    >>7503006

Damaged constructs can be salvaged, depending on how badly they were damaged. In most cases, you will at least be able to recover the Zrbite from their power cells.

Speaking of Zrbite, considering your limited supplies, you may want to work on modifying your drones to accept alternate power sources. This would be easier if you had a lab, but you can try it without.

I saw this thread and was ... inspired.

Anyway, the recycling efficiency should be close enough that we don't have to worry, until we run into problems. If we run into problems. With any amount of luck, it'll turn out that we smacked into an asteroid, thrown off course and got dropped in the atmosphere somehow.

Anyhow! Forty laborers divided into twenty teams of two to go out and begin preliminary repairs. We can begin reinforcing the laborers to accelerate repairs as necessary. If we're lucky all twenty teams won't be needed so that we can pool resources, but I'm not counting on that.

Observers doing perimeter patrols, five teams of two.

Observer-analyzer teams to scout for useful material, five teams of two (one type each).

Repair priorities so far: power, autorepair, sensors, nanofacs.

    Sound about right?

If you can recover the complete body, then yes, 100% efficiency in recycling. However, you might not always be able to find all the pieces.

Your observer teams circle around the ship. Most of the hull seems to be buried underground. To access the rest of the ship, you'll have to either navigate its wrecked interior or dig. High above, they spot some larger organisms moving around in the water.

Your harvester teams begin gathering as much sand and silt as they can. However, to convert them into usable form, you'll need to take the nanofactory off of production duty.
    >> Anonymous 01/09/10(Sat)05:23 No.7503101
I would suggest having the analyzers conduct research into potential new sources of energy, primarily study the water to see if we can make use of it through hydro power or whatnot first. Moving from there to examining if the metals and trace elements in the samples we have discovered so far and if they are compatible with anything we have to formulate new hull sections (or we could forgo those to consolidate what we have for now).

Resupplying the nanofac can wait for the time being. We need to get more hands out there to work.

Harvesters can stand by until we have a second nanofac, in which event we can shut down one of them for resupply, and use the other for production as needed.

Also, tell the observers to make sure that they keep a low profile. I don't know what's above us, but I don't want to attract its attention.

I am going to buck the trend here, however: do we have the resources to make a small fusion reactor and put it online as a power source until we have brought our reactors online? If so, I'm thinking we may want to do that, and soon. We can't run off the zrbite reserves forever and the more juice we can run off of, the better. We can use surplus juice to make zrbite, if my understanding is correct, though perhaps not yet.

The patrols have determined that there is a wide variety of organisms infesting the outer hull. Some stationary, some mobile, some producers, some consumers. They even seem to have moved into the hull breaches, and fill the exposed rooms with a thick layer of living detritus.

In terms of energy sources: you aren't picking up much Lithium in the water, but there's a decent amount of metal. The water around your current position isn't moving much, but closer to the surface above you there is a strongish current, and sunlight. Additionally, the microorganisms you've sampled could probably be digested somehow.

You send your laborers (all but one of which are currently idle) and one observer into the ship to find their way to the nearest fusion reactor. Its pretty banged up. The nearest reactor doesn't seem accessible at all due to physical damage.

You do discover a cargo bay on your way to the next reactor. Its interior walls are ripped open, but the outer hull is intact. It contains 100 Body Construction and 100 Zrbite. There should be another tertiary nanofactory adjacent to it, but that hallway is totally smashed shut.

Eventually, you find another fusion reactor. It is flooded by a small hull breach, and sand and mud have filled the lower half of the room (the hull breach is underground). It looks like it can be restored, though.

Otherwise we need to get that room cleaned out first and repair the breach. All sensors are in passive mode.

Most of your laborers begin pumping the water out of the room and sealing the leaks, while two others clear the sand and mud from around the vital mechanisms.

IMPORTANT: the observer accompanying your interior repairs team has made a discovery!

The arterial ducts that the ship uses to distribute power and materials have been partly flooded, and infested with alien vermin and growths. This may be why the auto-repair isn't working.

Barring a new innovation on your part, you have two options for clearing the ducts:

NANOBLOB: produce a glob of corrosive nanogel to crawl through the ducts and digest the invaders. This will cost nothing to produce, but is slow-acting and makes some noticable power demands.

SCROUNGER: these small robots resemble flattened worms or eels with toothy, whirling maws. They are faster than nanoblobs and don't take much power, but you'll need to build them. A scrounger costs 1/2 units of Body Construction.

In either case, the organisms you destroy will be converted into usable materials.

Yes, resume laborer construction. Scroungers are to be deployed in groups of two (as usual) with emphasis on cleaning out material in rooms with important equipment in them... for example, the fusion reactor that's under repair, that would be a great one to see what we get when they start eating everything.

Do not scan the big thing; recall drones -carefully- in the event that this is a predator. Rather, don't recall to the ship, but send them in another direction. We'll see if it follows and maintains the same behavior, monitor it for signs of sapience.

Let's get some of those observers to scout the path to the next reactor and see whether it is clear.

I would suggest that an effective method of attack would be to house some nanoblob within an observer and have it eat the creature from within should the observer be swallowed.

Of course, this one is merely in charge of Floral Arrangement and knows nothing of such terrible acts.

My understanding was that up until now we were just sending the observers out on automated programming and would report back to the ship with results. Same with the laborers and that only the analyzers were the ones with actual consciousnesses in them.

I feel we should just have the drones we produce for now run on automated programming and not endanger any consciousnesses in the ship until we have access to more "crew" members.

Backups can be created without too much effort. It just takes time and the attention of some other minds.

Scans reveal an ectothermic organism, despite its fast and active metabolism. This species exhibits bilateral symmetry, with a cephalized head boasting what appear to be feeding or breathing orifices and sensory organs. Opening its largest anterior orifice, the creature reveals its many rows of razor-sharp, conical teeth. With another quick circle, it swoops forward and takes an enormous bite out of the observer, tearing plastics and crushing the metal wire frame with a biting pressure far greater than that of any beast native to your world. Tattered and taking on water, the observer begins to sink.

    Okay.

The sun, which had set just before the beast attacked, rises once again. The fusion reactor is online! Thousands of new minds have awakened!

The scroungers have cleared a significant share of the ship's ducts. Auto-repair of these areas has been enabled. Auto-repair is much slower than manual repair, but it is immaculately thorough and efficient. If used in conjunction with manual repairs, the reconstruction of your facilities will go much faster. Unless otherwise requested, all excess energy from now on will go to auto-repair.

The scroungers have chewed the infestation from the cleared areas into basic carbon and calcium based compounds, and dropped them in the cargo bay. You gain 2 Body Construction. One of your scroungers damaged itself in a tight, warped duct, and is no longer functional; the other scroungers promptly ate it and returned the materials to your stores.

You are continuing to build Laborers. Your order of 40 laborers is nearly complete.

Areas that are only slightly damaged (like that reactor) still have semi-functional atmosphere siphons that your laborers can use. To get the water out of a REALLY damaged area (like that laboratory) you'll need to make pumps.

    Speaking of which...

One of the new minds to awaken was the Master at Arms. He knows the designs for personal weapons.

VIBRO-BLADE: Sturdy melee weapon. Costs 0.5 Body Construction.
PRESSURE GUN: Primitive, but inexpensive, ranged weapon. Costs 0.5 Body Construction.
MASS DRIVER GUN: Powerful, state-of-the-art sidearm. Costs 0.5 Body Construction and 1 Zrbite. After a battle in which it has been used heavily, the gun will require another 1 Zrbite to reload.

These are PERSONAL weapons. Your ship's weapon port is already armed.

Each of Colony 13's modular weapon ports can switch between the following three weapons:

MASS DRIVER CANNON: Your mainstay weapon. Excellent range and firepower. Using this weapon will make significant demands of your power supply, however; you may have to shut other facilities off while using it.
SMALL LASER: Mainly used to blast space rocks out of the way while the ship is in flight. Short range, limited firepower, but no energy cost.
ANNHILATION MISSILE: Each weapon port carries one of these matter/antimatter warheads. All the power of a nuke, but without that annoying fallout. Currently, you don't have a wide enough sphere of awareness to target anything that wouldn't catch you in the blast.
