/tg/, let's play a game; a game of creation. The rules are simple. I will ask you for your inputs, and you will roll the dice. The lowest roller's idea becomes a part of the setting.

So, shall we begin? What sort of setting is this? Fantasy, Science Fiction, or Other?

Time has run out. The universe is an odd one. The depths of the void contain not cold vacuum, but breathable, if thin air. Spacefaring civilizations have ascended into the firmament not on the destruction of matter, nor manipulation of the minute fabric of reality, but with crude steam-driven aetherships.

Now, who shall populate this setting?

Human-sized bipeds with hard, external shells.

Their goal, as a species: to spread forth through the universe. But not through breeding and conquering and creating hegemony; rather, by spreading out. They're somewhat territorial, though good-natured, and as a result don't enjoy the company of their own species very much. Thus, when travel through the aether was attained, their civilization fragmented, government dissolved, and they went each their own way through the universe.

You will find them in the company of aliens, seldom with each other. Their lives are long and they reproduce rarely - part by choice, part by the simple rarity of encountering another of their kind.

Not too good with technology, but agile, strong, handy in a fight, with a great spirit of exploration. Concerned more with doing things and visiting places than with acquiring wealth or power.

The crustacean federation is not a federation at all. It is a tyranny, run by the malevolent King Crab. The only one left of his kind, he is nigh immortal, and seeks to spread his rule all over the galaxy.

Each race in the federation is placed into a caste that best befits them. The crabs are the warriors, and the hermit crabs are spies. The snails are too weak for combat due to their frail physique, but compensate by being master tacticians.

There are a few crabs, snails, and mollusks that break out of the mold of servitude. These are either eaten or ex-communicated.

    Our 5 starborne races:

Humanity, sunken back into barbarism, now plying the stars much as their ancestors did the seas. They are feared for their raids upon the more civilized races.

Ratfolk, genteel and sophisticated. Their civilization has reached a golden age of technology and good manners.

Carapak, strangely antipathic to their own kind, have dispersed to the stars. They live for adventure, lending their services to the highest bidder.

Uller with their crystal ships, breaking free from the tribal traditions of the past and grasping the future with all four craggy arms.

The crustaceous Swarm, lead by the undying Crab Emperor. They threaten to destroy all else in their path to fulfill the will of the Clawed One.

How large is the stage upon which this play is set?

The Crustacean Confederacy is centered around a star with several water-bearing planets. Every life form on every planet is connected to a psychic web that can span galaxies in an instant. The life-forms that gained intelligence on each world first bent all other life forms to their will, and fought an intangible war via psychic influence planet to planet. Eventually a peace was forged, and Nautillises suited for space travel were constructed, so when they finally reached into space, several life forms were united as one people. Each planet has its own form of government, but all are part of the confederacy.

The universe is nearing its end via heat death. Most every star has collapsed into a black hole or cooled to a lump of rock. There is a small batch of ancient stars still burning, constructed from the stuff of the last existing extra-galactic nebula. The whole universe might as well be this tiny galaxy, which has perhaps 20-30 old stars.

Small correction: they would lend their services to whoever has the most interesting adventure, or will take them to an unexplored place, or something else that appeals to them personally - sometimes even on whim. As far as payment, all they really demand is enough to get them by until the next contract. They don't care that much about making money beyond a means for survival.

The universe has nearly reached the end of it's time. No longer do endless stars inspire sentient minds to greatness. Now, only a few red husks remain in scattered nebulae. Within one such, some life still remains, clinging to the last bits of warmth and light remaining.

Of the Humans, adventuring in one last hedonistic hurrah after billions of years of focused advancement destroyed by some massive cataclysm. The Uller, refusing to let the impending Apocalypse of cold deter their hope for a long, glorious future. The Carapak, searching for fulfillment in their own quiet ways, knowing that the quality of life is determined by how, not how long, it is lived. Carapak maker guy here; I'm back as well.

Perhaps a large-scale, high-tech war that took out all human civilization capable of taking part, leaving only primitive elements of humanity behind, who, relatively recently, began stretching forth into the stars and exploring and making colonies and whatnot?

It happened long enough ago that humanity has had the time to reach its new technology and establish itself as an aether-fairing civilization, but recently enough that they're still in the early stages of colonization and exploration: the universe stands open and unknown, challenging bold men to go forth and conquer.

Old pre-war human tech would make for valuable findings, when it isn't trying to kill you. Of course, for good god-fearing gentlemen who stay to the straight and true laws of steampunk physics, such technology is an utter mystery, and they exist more as relics and "magic" than as true technological devices.
