The long and short of it is this:

The next PDF isn't going to be a full book. It will, however, be a (hopefully), very fun supplement which contains seeds and mechanics for various nonstandard adventures in various genres (horror, action, comedy, drama) as well as a whole section of new angels (dubbed Archangels) meant to be powerful and challenging pre-made enemies to insert into your campaign as you see fit should you need a curveball for your players.

Now, must of this we have under control. But, for obvious reasons, the Archangels have no pre-existing art. We are trying to fix that.

To that end, we have a small dedicated drawfag team trying to chug out what they can. But there is a lot to do, and they have already been really good sports about this.

So, if any of you have a kind heart and artistic skill, please consider this a call for drawfags to step forward and take part in a /tg/ homebrew project. Obviously, should any of your work be included you will be credited appropriately.

Descriptions of the archangels still unclaimed by artists to follow...

Jehudiam

Jehudiam presents, at best, a crude approximation of a beetle. It has a single pair of heavy, solid cover-like wings (which it never uses) covering its back, a rather simple torso and a diamond-shaped head, on top of two pairs of limbs built from sharp-edged jointed sections of carapace. The entirety of it is covered in a hard jade-tinted carapace of unknown composition, but with remarkable tensile strength considering Jehudiam's size.

The Angel takes a rather novel approach to how it attacks. Jehudiam, for reasons unknown, has the ability to move itself and other objects through a recently-mathematically-proven dimension of which humans have no perception. It is therefore a somewhat difficult threat to defeat, as neutralization has no effect on its ability to 'steal' things, among which can include parts of an Evangelion such as its limbs.

Rahab

At first, this Archangel does not appear a trickster. A stark white, black-striped, almost shark-tooth-shaped object about a kilometer long, Rahab hovers above the surface like a swift blimp, with its convex side pointed downwards. The two black stripes along its flat upward surface can split themselves from the main creature and create a pair of manipulator tentacles which it uses for various mischief.

On the convex side, the matching black stripe pair serves an altogether different purpose. They serve as retractable covers, protecting a vast cavern of wombs, tendrils and tumors. Rahab's true power lies in this hellish network: it can produce anywhere between ten and ten million offspring over the course of the day. The exact number is proportional to that specific breed's size – for example, larger floaters around the size of an Evangelion form in batches of ten, whereas meter-long self destructing creatures may be born in groups exceeding 400,000 though even then, variation within a batch can vary wildly.

Individually, each of these beasts serve varying degrees of miniscule-to-little threat to an Evangelion. En masse, however, they can devastate entire bases, cities, regions and so on, and are fully capable of destroying any small number of Units in a short amount of time.

One thing we would love to be able to do with the new PDF is to format it so that it is the product of a Seele Subcommittee purposed with analyzing and predicting the outcome of the so called "less important" Dead Sea Scrolls.

To this end, we have toyed with the idea of including, with each archangel, a few 'translated lines' from the previously mentioned Dead Sea Scrolls that said Subcommittee read and then used to extrapolate the probably powers of the Archangel described in that passage.

We we would want, then, is about 4 lines of good old fashioned cryptic, prophetic text for each Archangel. The sort of look and feel of an old people who has been translated as literally as possible, and thus lost its original rhyme.

Would anyone here be interested in playing around with that? I think it would be a fun and productive way to keep the thread bumped as we wait for the drawfags to arrive.

Archangel general descriptions for the cryptic verse:

Galgaliel: Starts as a weak fish-like thing. Once its crawl on land, is absorbs sunlight and mutates on the spot into a much more powerful creature. It’s kind of like a plant-lizard. It’s bigger form can vomit solar flares.

Zaazenach – Pretty much the Vashta Nerada. A cloud of hungry darkness, except that it can also lay eggs in your Evas flesh which, down the road, might erupt into a new Zaazenach at the worst possible time (like when your Eva has just been defeated by another, later, Angel).

Zophiel – adorable little metallic thing that has no attacks. It takes over technology around it, turning your bases own defenses into its weapon and buzzing right past all of your best security measures.

Jehudiam – Already described above.

Cathetel – Giant tower surrounded by flying swarms. The tower fries you with beams that also act as targeting lasers, so anything hit by them gets gangstabbed by the swarms.

Marmaroth – An interesting one. Its basically a giant floating fetus-like monstrosity that exists at multiple points in time and tends to escape battle by ‘skipping’ ahead a week or two into the future. When harmed, the next time it tries to escape into the future it collapses and explodes, mindraping everyone nearby.

Aradia – A ball of light designed to mess with your emotions and mental state to turn your own weaknesses and drawbacks against you with a vengeance.

1: The surface could use some more detail. Maybe not more protrusions, but some sort of something there to make it look less artificial.

2: The egg is cool, but kind of too big. Rahab is constantly accompanied by its children anyway. Perhaps a swarm pouring out from the bottom, a couple of them closer to the viewer so you have some idea of what the individual smaller ones look like?

Just an idea I had about Cathetal OP- I don't know if you all make your angels have "halos" ala the recent Rebuild films, but thats kind of what I went off of in this shitty MS paint adventure.

The thought was making cathetal an inverted tower, with the point "hanging" over ground combatants like a sword of damocles- and where the "earth" would be at the foundation of the tower is instead a hazy, cloudlike halo if that makes sense.

If I had a tablet and a tablet pen I could make it look prettier in a program like Studio.

Well the chart in Life on the Ground does pretty well for most people, but I'll assume you, like me, have players who are... rather less public figures than the norm and hence don't fit into standard scenarios.

The fundamental switch to take place here is to start thinking about events and places, rather than the people involved. Ones I ran to some success:
- The OD runs a ludicrously over elaborate real life training exercise. Had tragic consequences but maybe your pilots are less likely to hospitalise 20 children with semi-permanent injuries within the context of a "paintball match"

-Set up encounters in a more interesting area of the base, such as Eva maintenance.

-Characters birthday. They go out somewhere interesting.

We need an Evangelion or two in a city looking at a core floating in the air. No angel attacked tot he core, just a red sphere. Except that the Core is just radiating power. Ripples in the air, dark energy of some kind. Nothing explicitly damaging or lightening based, just the sense that this core is radiating power and affecting the area around it somehow.

The whole picture should be rather dark and lean in kind of a spooky/horror direction if at all possible.

Its kind of a tall order, but that's what we need if you are willing to step up to the plate for it.

Unit-Y: The original prototype, revealed to the world possibly as some kind of publicity stunt, or perhaps the Angels attacked before any of the EVA's were ready and revealing it was publicity damage control.

UNIT-A
Basically, the worst EVA in the series, only kept around for badly explained reasons. The ACTUAL reason being that it occupies the position in SEELE's great plan that Unit-01 occupied. In that it's a lilith clone instead of an Adam clone. Or possibly a patchwork monstrosity between the two.
It's possible that the armour was made light deliberately by people opposed the Instumentality Project so that they could destroy it and scupper SEELE's plans.

Unit-B
Effectively a parallel to Asuka's Unit-02, whilst the previous Evangelions were unique, Unit-B would be the basic template to which all other Evangelions made subsequently would adhere too. Although, given their cost that would mean at most there would be about 4 or 5 Unit-B's (Numbered numerically IE: B1, B2 and so on) in the world.

Unit-K
A mid-season upgrade or replacement for a lost Eva, Unit-K would be designed to deal with the more dangerous angels now appearing. Heavy armour, a bad attitude, and quite possibly a great big BMW badge on it's chest.

Unit-M
Whearas B was the standardised form, Unit-M was the simplified form, a model designed with the cheapest possible components to create and keep maintained. The idea was that many of these could be built relatively cheaply, and then activated as other Eva's are destroyed. Like a journeyman in a Blood Bowl team. Of course, the costs and logistics of activating ALL of them at once would be nightmarish.
But, if SEELE have deployed THEIR mass production Eva's, perhaps then would be the time set up a Royal Rumble...?

Drawfagging takes time, please understand that. Even a "fast" sketch takes 30 minutes at the very least - and that's at the professional level with an idea of what to draw. Hashing out hazy concepts takes quite a bit of time.

Even the most blazing-fast speedpainters still take around an hour for a given piece. Writing can happen a lot faster if you happen to be particularly inspired.

I figure since it's constantly generating an anti-AT field the Angel would itself have an unstable, always flowing structure, like a ribbon of gold wound into a parody of a man. I keep getting the feeling that Mutants and Masterminds might make a good base for a Super Robot RPG. You'd need to tinker with the damage system, replace bruises with some sort of randomised chart to represent systems going offline, maybe have one for heavier hits, like the kind that result in your mech losing an arm.

But I've gotten sidetracked. Just give the AdEva PDF's a read through, if you wanted, you could fairly easily make an entire campaign where all of the players are Section 2 agents trying to keep these horribly mentally damaged kids alive.

Alternatively, you could stat out Godzilla and have the players try to survive/stop him.

You should've used Catasetum, the trebuchet orchid. Flowers of this plant actively launch their pollen on insects passing by, so you'd get an Evangelion that spits caustic blood and explosive redundant organs from every joint. Either that or since pollen is, well, pollen, you'd get a penis Evangelion with caustic semen. Bonus points if its pilot tells the enemy Angel to eat a dick before attacking.

Drosera is another good choice, which would probably be the Evangelion version of the fourth angel. Tentacles everywhere, except now they're sticky. And if you tried something with kudzu... well, the Rebuild films exist primarily for two reasons: A) to steal our money again, and B) supposedly to rectify some character traits given Anno's new outlook on life. It's a bit heavier on the mecha action, and somewhat lighter on the characterization (Poor Ritsuko gets the short end of the stick). But really, ambivalence to the series is probably a good indicator of a healthy, well-adjusted individual.

I tried something like that with my players for one session. It was awesome, and rather relaxing. Instead of Angels, the worst thing to fear are terrorists, assassins, combat squads from other Nerv outposts (who will remain standing after the angels are gone?), and Seele's Ghosts. Can't forget the Angelspawn either. And maybe a session where a pilot ejects and the group will need to go out in the middle of the Angel fight to recover him/her from the pod.

Just a suggestion here. If you guys what to add anything in a future supplement about fighting human armies, you should try to adapt the Death Watch horde combat system. Our DM did it that way and it turned out very well.

So here's a question. I've never played Dark Heresey, although I know one guy in our group owns the core book.

I'm middlingly interested/aware of Evangelion, and I'm sure my brother could fill me in on the minor detail points, as he's a big fan.

Is one required to understand either to be able to run this well?

Also, how does Eva combat run in terms of lethality and the like? My group tends to play more like wargamers than roleplayers, so 'whoops, you're instagibbed' won't go over very well, but they can handle being beaten.

Good questions, the both of them.

1) You don't have to be HUGELY familiar with the DH rules to play AdEva, but you do need to have read them enough to figure out the basic mechanics. Pretty much the basics of how character creation and skills work, a few talents that carry over, and how basic combat works.
Knowledge of the Evangelion setting is, again, not required, but GMs (for obvious reasons) probably should look into it so they have a better idea of what world they are operating in. That said, many GMs throw the normal setting out the window and use a mythology of their choice instead of the normal 'angels'.
Some would say that the GM knowing Evangelion but the players NOT is actually a good thing, as they know less of the surprises inherently in store.

2) The Combat can be brutal, its true. If the dice hate you and/or you make poor decisions, you can easily find your Eva losing its head.
That said, its FAR easier to survive combat in an Eva than in Personal scale Dark Heresy.
For example. You Evangelion gets royally fucked up. If it loses its head? You are out of the fight, but your Pilot (the character you actually play) is fine.
If your Eva is killed by massive damage to the torso? You might be in trouble. But there is always the chance that you eject. Even if you don't eject, there is still only a chance of an entry plug breach. If breached, your pilot takes 1d100 wounds. Keep in mind you usually have about 10-15 health. So Chances are you probably die a terrible death there. Unless you roll very, very lucky.

And THEN, you character has been killed. Unless you have any Fate Points left. That's right, you can permanently sacrifice a Fate Point (which you get 2-3 of at Character Creation) to automatically and irrevocably go "I survive this, somehow".

So, as brutal as the combat at the very least you have 2-3 extra lives, and losing those takes terrible luck or having put yourself into a terrible, terrible situation.

The mecha anime nerd in me demands that I explain that that image isn't Gurren Lagann as an evangelion at all. It's Gaogaigar. It has drills on its knees (mecha had drills on them before TTGL, hard as that is to believe), it's primarily black, and not primarily red, and the color and shape of the shoulders are a pretty dead giveaway. The head and chestplate have been altered, but are still reminiscent of Gaogaigar.

Yes, describing them as FF7 style weapons would work. Although Weapons from FF7 never had the capacity for subtlety that the Angels had.

As for the rest, going to throw in my two cents that FF&7's WEAPONs reminded me a good bit of angels, at least in terms of appearance. Notably diamond Weapon, or whichever was the one you fought on its way to Midgar. It even had a red, spherical core.
