Diagnostics tick by behind your optics, scrolling emerald runes obscuring your surroundings as your auditory receptors come online. A series of guttural tones which you recognize as language recall translation software into active mnemonics.

"...construct was discovered at approximately 0430 local time," a voice explains, resolving into the form of a grey-clad technician as your sight returns in a fuzz of green static. "The locals described some sort of electrical disturbance presaging its discovery," it continues, gesturing broadly in your direction, "but as far as we can tell it's completely inert."

Situational awareness is restored next, your perception of the space around you revealing an enclosure composed of a transparent crystalline lattice and mild structural integrity field no doubt intended to keep its contents - you - isolated. As you begin to flex your legs in sequential mechanical testing, another life form enters your field of view.

"Umm, sir?" it interrupts, its tonal pitch somewhat higher than the former's. Your primary lens revolves to focus on the creature, now leaning over you with an expression which could charitably be described as curious, your background processes running comparative recognition of its facial and structural features against a database of species native to this area of the galaxy. You encounter your first computational error when you are unable to determine where, exactly, that happens to be.
    >> Shas'o Tau'quest !!oRzT9pO4Q3p 12/06/10(Mon)22:29 No.13058377
"We have to assume it's some sort of drone or probe," interjects a third, more aggressively; it it paid any mind to the one examining you, it gives no indication. A tertiary optical cluster focuses on it, deducing that it is largely similar to the other specimens observed so far, but clad in an armored jumpsuit of of ceramic plates and ballistic fabric.

"We don't have to assume any such thing!" the first protests while you return your attention to the female - a deduction based on the presence of secondary sexual characteristics and low-power scan sweeps of its physiology. The initial returns indicate a high quantity of cobalt in the creature's chemical composition, no doubt functioning as hemoglobin and contributing to the shade of its pigmentation.

"Sir?" she begins again, a bit more loudly this time. "You should really take a look at this."

"Not now, Sar'a!" the aggressive specimen, a male of the species, impatiently chastises.

The female's cheeks color as she snaps to attention, turning her back to you as she addresses the male. "I apologize, Commander," she accedes, "but I don't think the device is completely inert."

    What do?

You perform a more comprehensive diagnostic of your mechanical systems, reestablishing a mnemonic framework of your construction. You measure exactly 45.3 centimeters in length from the tip of your mandible cluster to the end of your carapace with a cluster of six manipulator digits curled under your primary chassis in a stowed position. At the moment, you are confined in an isolation vessel intended to prevent biological contamination from escaping into the environment which scarcely allows you room to deploy your wings or unfold your legs.

A memetic notation identifies you as a precursor scarab, although you presently lack the context to associate it.

The lifeforms quickly surround your enclosure while you return to a fully docile state, passive perception only. The one which you identified as a technician appears to be attempting a remote analysis. It is possible that, if allowed to continue, he will discover the power spike that accompanied your resurrection.

An analysis of your networking capabilities quickly leads you to discover a platinum-level lockout on your ability to connect wirelessly. Any interface will have to be performed as a physical link between systems and that will require you to escape your current confinement.

After a rapid series of calculations, you determine that a sufficiently explosive movement should enable you to breach the containment vessel and allow you to impact one of your captors with a fair degree of kinetic energy, potentially allowing you to incapacitate your chosen target.

Select a target - or no target at all - and roll 1d100; the first consensus of three determines your course of action.

Although you hide your power signature now that you find yourself on the verge of discovery, the initial spike - although subtle enough not to raise an alarm at the time - has nonetheless already been logged by the primitive sensing equipment arranged around your enclosure. From this, the grey-suited male is able to refine his readings and hone in on you!

"Shas'o," the technician starts, "there was definitely some sort of activity inside the force field, but whatever it was it seems to have ceased.

"Without knowing more about how this construct functions," he continues, "I recommend placing it under guard in case it does prove to be active."

"My thoughts exactly," the Shas'o replies, drawing his firearm - a blocky, snub-nosed energy weapon, by your passive analysis - and leveling it at you. "Guards!"

"Sir, it's powering up!" the technician exclaims as you unfold your legs within the tight confines of the container. Another group of creatures, clad similarly to the one identified as Shas'o and bearing energy rifles, enters the laboratory space and assume firing positions on you as you attempt to communicate.

You're left to wonder if counting on organics to behave in a logical fashion was ill advised as the Shas'o declares, "flood the unit," his weapon maintaining a remarkably steady bead on you throughout.

Vents in the floor of your enclosure snap open - far too small to escape, but more than adequate to admit a vaporous mist containing a curious collection of chemical compounds which begin to bond to your chassis on contact, and then to each other with remarkable speed. The air around you grows viscous with the substance as it rapidly sublimates from gas to solid, undoubtedly with the intention of trapping you like an insect in amber.

You lunge, as best you can, causing the walls of your enclosure to bulge out as they lose integrity. Glass shatters, flying it all directions with the force of your escape, but even as you extend your limbs the amber finally reaches a point of critical mass and grows still around you. Your limbs lock with no room to maneuver, preventing any motion at all.

"I wan't that thing isolated under constant observation," the Shas'o snaps, but if he's about to give any further orders he's delayed by a buzz from the communicator at the side of his head.

"Go ahead," he instructs, raising a hand to the headset's transmit key. Glowering, he snarls the word, "gue'la," before storming off.

His departure is interrupted by a sudden explosion that seems to rock the facility, sending your amber prison falling heavily to the floor. The assembled guards are sprawled by the force of the blast and, although muffled by your resinous confines, your auditory sensors are able to pick out the sounds of weapon discharges nearby.

The high-pitched whine of plasma discharges suffuse the surrounding laboratories as the fighting, whatever its form, draws closer. The guards, footing restored after the momentary disorientation, redirect their attention to the exit as they form up in an orderly fashion.

"Sir," one of them announces, operating a similar communication device to the commander's. "Laboratories two, three and five report containment breaches. The last hit took out power to the-"

The organic's words are cut short as a shriek of rent metal interjects, the far bulkhead buckling beneath an enormous weight as a new creature bursts into the chamber. It's massive, easily towering over the assembled guards and technicians, each of its four arms ending in jagged, scythe-like growths. Thick ropes of drool hang from its slavering maw, flecks of spittle flying as it lets loose a howl of rage!

The guards maintain their ground and begin to fire at the beast, but their shots seem to do little to discourage the ensuing bull rush as it slams into the ranked soldiers. Cobalt blood spatters its dark carapace as its soon among them, rending bodies limb from limb.

The Shas'o shouts a challenge, unloading round after round from his sidearm into the beast, but is snapped in half by its fangs for his efforts.

Your captors' attention, understandably, is off of you for the time being and an analysis of the resin compound indicates that it was damaged in the fall. You have a very good chance of escaping its confines.

Declare an action and roll 1d100.

Deploying all of your moving parts at once does the trick, shattering the resin block with a resounding crack - although if anybody else noticed your emergence in all of the surrounding chaos, they give no sign - too busy as they are with fighting and dying all around you.

A flash of movement to your rear draws your attention as you spot a blood-spattered figure scrambling into an air duct - the female that first observed your resurrection cycle, no doubt having come to a similar conclusion regarding possible escape routes. Shaking off the last particles of amber that cling tenaciously to your joints, you skitter to follow.

As you scuttle into the airduct after the fleeing tau, something clicks deep in your core programming; a deep-seated, almost instinctive purpose that guides you to increase the speed of your pursuit, launching yourself into the air as you zero in on the survivor.

If she notices your presence in the cramped quarters of the ductwork, it's far too late to evade as you twist in the air, legs oriented to her spine as you land with sufficient force to send her sprawling on her belly. She lets out a cry of alarm while you dig in, adhering tightly to her back.

With no connective hardware present, you opt instead to interface directly with the tau's nervous system, your underside splitting apart and reconfiguring to deploy a number of neural interface adapters that pierce your erstwhile host's spine and render her temporarily paralyzed!

Unable to move, the tau's eyes widen with panic as you insinuate yourself into the governance of her autonomous functions, forcing her into a state of suspended animation - near-death, allowing you to wait out the monstrous creature's predations, at least for the moment.

And allowing you adequate time to get to know each other.

    Drone Quest will continue.

You and me both, but this is the third time Shas has tried to restart the quest. Shas seems to have problems sticking with things.

No, that's what I mean. Retconing is what really killed it. Had we just continued and let the bitterness go, it might have turned out differently. Ah well. We live and learn.

I thought he didn't although he made the offer? Honestly, I didn't follow hana quest 2 after the first thread because the new scenario didn't interest me a lot.

Ah, you're right. But the point is, such a stink was raised over it that it lost all momentum.

    Not really:

    Sublimation
Sublimation is the physical change of state of a substance from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid state or the reverse process of passing from a gas to a solid. Examples of substances that sublime at room temperatures are carbon dioxide (dry ice), iodine and naphthalene (camphor or moth balls). In conditions of low humidity, ice will sublime directly to water vapour at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius.

Not really; sublimation is just the act of matter changing to or from solid to gas without changing to liquid in between.
