Alright soldiers, Skirmish Quest General thread time. That means its time to discuss plans for the next phase of combat, roleplay, and discuss the combat rules. Normal drawfagging and writefagging applies as well.

    "Hey brother?"
    "Yes, Lilly?"
"Are we really riding this train into a hive?"
    "Mhm."
    "... Are you worried?"
"No, deary." Hawkes didn't really mean that. Every encounter worried him to a certain degree, some more than others, but there was always the chance that he'd die. Again. But to keep his sister's spirits high he continued to read his book as if not worried. His sister, Pidgeon, hung over the side of her cockpit and watched him, her shoulder length black hair moving lightly with the breeze. Hawkes flipped the page and placed his bookmark between the two pages. He closed the book and returned it to his coat, and in doing so pulled out his hipflask. He took a quick swig and returned it to his coat. Today was gonna be a long day.

sup guys, myself and colton have been hammering out extras for classes. as well as fleshing out the combat bible called Janice's Bible, after the the lead combat analyst for combat clones and main developer for PsiComm. Heres some fun excerpts.

"> A knight charge is when a knight goes on a run against an opponnent within range. The enemy will then be forced back one square no matter what. If an obstacle exists behind that enemy, the enemy is crushed for one damage and the knight remains in their respective square.

    > A knight crush is when two knight charges meet with an enemy in the middle. It is 2 damage no matter what.
    > Detonate on Death: DoD is an action an M can use when they have died. TAs can detonate your body post mortem. The force of your munitions exploding all at once is a 6 hex comb that deals damage equal to how much B-Spheres [ammo] you have remaining.
You can also detonate yourself remotely, it is one action. "
    >> [Gr.CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/06/10(Mon)21:07 No.13057210
Fucking fine, I'll post the post-mission thing I tend to do.

They were lucky that the train was exposed to the surface at that moment. Even more so that they had control of both of them. With this, he now had time to send in needed supplies and reinforcements. He could have directly deployed at this spot, true. But that would mean having to backtrack to clear out the underground systems, or be attacked on both sides. So in the end, the longer route was chosen, even if it gave the hive time to react.

But then again, allowing them to react meant hunting them all down would be easier.

Walker took a drag from his cigar. Three hours was all he had to get the men prepared. No time for food, just accelerated rest in PSI comm. He never did like PSI comm. too much. Funny, considering that his job meant that he was interacting with it more than his men were. At least he didn’t have to sleep in it. One of the perks being a Commanding Officer: only a few people could order him to rest in PSI comm. – and those who held the authority to, didn’t.

He rubbed his eyes. Still, he was tired, and he would welcome sleep. No doubt his men were the same, but even more so. And in three hours, they would go back into hell. What could he do, to give them a bit of an edge? To increase the odds that they would come home? They still had a job to do, yes, and Walker was certain that if he asked it of them, any one of Bravo would gladly run the nuke into the hive and detonate themselves. But, as Fierstrom would often say, he was too much of a “bleeding heart.” Sure, he could cut down on potential losses by doing a suicide run. But it didn’t sit right with him. They were clones, but they were still human. He didn’t care what Evergrad or Fierstrom thought.
    >> [Gr.CO] Maj. Walker !IMYfe1j54Y 12/06/10(Mon)21:08 No.13057228
    >>13057210

So long as they were his men, his soldiers, the men and women serving him under the banner of Bravo Force, he would never forsake them. Even if Fierstrom ordered him to, or Evergrad threatened to detonate his skull, he would refuse. They were his men. They trusted him to get them through each and every mission, and he trusted them to be his hands, arms, and eyes, to follow his orders to get the job done. If he was to forsake them as so many other commanders would, it would be a blatant violation of that trust, of their worth as men and women. And if he did that, what would that make him?

He sighed, and shut his eyes. Memories of the past flooded back to him. Memories of his brother, of the Gemini Project, of the days before he became a simple Tactical Adviser, memories that until recently were content on staying in the depths of his mind. Maybe it was because he was back to being connected to PSI comm. for so long? Maybe the stress was getting to him, or simply the nature of his position reminded him of that time.

It was odd, though. It wasn’t until Bravo was deployed on Homestead did this start happening. That he was greeted by that new recruit. Odd, considering recruits typically don’t do that. Lost. Yes, Lost, that Knight who recently made Corporal that managed to turn a great deal of heads. A mysterious transfer, who for some reason, had a window in her cryo pod. She was probably a part of some secret project of some type – whether she knew it or not was a different story. Fierstrom probably knew what it was, or if she wasn’t, probably had the connections and abilities to find out. But he knew how these things went, that it would be nearly impossible for him, with all his power granted to him by Overseer Evergrad, to uncover. Of course, he knew better than to stick his nose in it to begin with. So long as his men functioned cohesively, they would be fine – these projects would continue, even if he did dislike them.

    “Major Walker, sir?”

A familiar voice brought him back.

    “Yes, McMillan?”

“I asked about the striders you sent in. Should we recover them when they catch up to the team?”

“No. Have them trail behind the trains when the next phase of the operation begins. And go prep the Pelicans for launch. I want them deployed at that surface junction and ready to extract Bravo.”

    “Sir!”

The man saluted then walked off to make the proper arrangements for Bravo’s eventual extraction.

He closed his eyes once more. Suddenly, another memory came forth, of his time on Galadoria. It was something that Orbital Command said to him once and only once, back before he was made a Major, that he now recalled and whispered quietly to himself.

    “When Heroes Die
    May Valkryes Fly
    And Cowards Fry
And their Memories return on High.”

    >End. Let me know if this theme is getting repetitive.
    >> [Ag]Shot !H508X.HbJ6 12/06/10(Mon)21:10 No.13057243
Alright, I've been thinking pretty heavily on what I said last night, and I think I've got what I wanted to say ironed out.

First of all, don't get me wrong. The game's fun as hell, like necromunda with everyone playing a seperate ganger. That's just badass. It's enjoyable, too, the mythology around it and the squad. It's genuinely fun to play.

    However.

Support units should not gain experiance with kills. That's Doing It Wrong, and has the support (namely medics and armored gyros) not even sure whether they get the kill or not. For myself, I know in the general sense that if it's behind me or dead, it's my kill, but now there's another trample unit, so it's harder, or impossible, to know.

    For medics, it's even worse.

Considering the difficulty in knowing who killed what, for some classes, it might be pertinent to actually list who got what kills each phase. This way, there's no question of who got what kill, what counted as a kill for them, etc. It makes everything smoother.

Secondly, consider reworking the whole upgrade system. Leave it to our superior officers to decide when we get upgrades, based on performance in the field, from a pool of points earned by the group as a whole. It reinforces the feeling of working in a military, and makes things more personal and interesting.

Announce time limits. When they start, when they end, if you extend them.

Don't be vague about numbers. Ever.

Rework the ooK. Jesus christ, he is functionally unstoppable and capable of getting more kills in one mission than some units were able to in THREE.

That's all I gotta say, aside from getting on IRC if you can, OC. it's the only messager I use, and I shouldn't have to get an account tied to my only email just to talk to you.

Dominique was...Dominique. That was all that could *Really* be said, about the androgynous Knight.

Spraypaint in hand, She had found herself working on her helmet, inch by inch, doing her best to make it look a little more than presentable. The steady hiss was a comfort, and while she was *Sure* some higher up was going to bust her chops for vandalizing military hardware, it made Dom feel better to have some kind of uniqueness, something to stand out from another lackey.

When she was done, the helmet barely resembled its' old self; a red half-skull had been painted over the front of it, glaring out at any bugs she cared to turn to, a pair of menacing crossbones done under it. The shield fared no better in maintaining its' standard-issue look. It had been painted with a skull in the center, a red ring circling the edge. Dom would need to ask Walker how to say the words in latin-but for now...

    "Hold The Line"

Was painted across the bottom, underneath that grisly marking.

A little grin of pride for herself, and Dom looked up from her work, content.

The medic's primary method of getting points has been, and should always be, healing.

Also, using the grav-gun in a support manner - such as repelling a missile and killing something with it - is encouraged with kill point awards.

Not sure how to handle actions such as the airborne Knight/Rifleman, in which no particular kills are garnered.

Like I said, the more often you show up, and the more you contribute, the more likely I'll remember you and try to send something your way.

Upgrades is essentially leveling, which is tied to XP, or rather kills/points, gained. On occasion, your CO may try to get something for you for actions that are not directly tied to kills, but things that may alter the outcome of the fight.

Hey Shot I listen to what you're saying and I can hear ya.

Currently there is no great way to track kills. I mean when I'm processing its literally a process that involves reading numbers off the side of the screen and drawing as I go along. Where I to spam some receptacle of text as to when kills happen would flood this thread or break my concentration from processing.

It is assumed that when the enemy's health is known and when attacks are happening it should be trackable when people got kills or not This of course became an impossibility as not many people do this type of stuff in their head.

If there was a combat analyst that wants to keep track of kills they can keep a line open and I can spam them on aim or something. They can report as the battle progresses boy wouldn't THAT be wonderful. Its almost like a real army at work here.

As for the system feel free to suggest anything about the game's development. Being a support class is pretty furstrating since you're not kill based and the current system in place assumes you are in some RPG.

    WIERD RIGHT ?

As there is no way to prove combat effeciency , kills seems to be the spartan method to determining if people are doing well. if theres a better way to give incentive to fight and ascend in rank while still maintaining fair and personal touch -- again, you are more than welcome.

Kills are a pretty terrible method of determining if people deserve promotion/improvement, and I say this as a guy with something like 46 kills. Fact is, some people get lucky with die rolls; others get unlucky with die rolls (I'm looking at you last night, Roosevelte). Some forms of equipment are simply better than others. And some people have things that they need to be doing which aren't killing things, and deserve to have a system of advancement which rewards completing the mission objective over slaughtering the most enemies.

All that said, it's true that it's really hard to determine just who deserves what, and how critical each person was to victory; kills do provide a (crude and flawed) metric of measurement for this. One minor improvement that I would suggest would be grouping kills by squad rather than individual, allowing support members to benefit from the success of those they're supporting; of course, this implicitly assumes that players will actually be operating in squadlike fashions, which is total crap. Our squads weren't organized using any kind of reasonable method of force functionality or distribution. We'd have to rework them in order for a squad kill system to be an actual improvement over what we've got now.

Other suggestions... well, we could all get points at the end of the mission based upon net gain in deployment points, perhaps with the CO awarding a few additional points to any personnel whose actions were exceptional or mission critical. That would reward everyone and encourage finesse in the use of resources, although some people might feel dissatisfied if in their perception the CO underrates their contribution.

I think something like this could work if used in a very minor way. Like for shot's rescue earlier award 1 point at the end of a mission, something REALLY major/awesome might be worth 2. That way people can still be rewarded for doing heroic things even but not so much that anyone's gonna be terribly annoyed they didn't get points.

not exactly a solution but it might help mitigate some issues.

A set gain then under values some players more than others. What if one unit takes out 20 bugs by himself before dying? A set gain would drastically alter the meaning of getting kills.

Why would I risk my ass when I can sit on the outskirts and pick off anything that comes close? If I'm forced to get kills to upgrade then I have to risk myself and hope I get lucky with my rolls.

On the note of getting bad rolls: It happens to everyone. There were times when I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. And then there's days when I get 5 kills in one burst.

On the note of better equipment: It gives you even MORE incentive to kill. You can get a kill even when everyone else and their mother is carrying bigger guns than you, hell, we've seen infantry out perform tanks. And if you CAN'T get kills it's more than likely because of shitty positioning. Back in the big fight with the Queen on Aggoria I was stuck in back and it took my 4 or so turns to get to a position where I could shoot, the next turn it was over.

I do see flaws when it comes to Support classes and this system, but condemning everyone for their sake just doesn't seem right.

Again, playing favorites, and it doesn't take into account a situation where players are botted.

Also, on the squads, I totally agree about the lack of organization. If you look at past engagements, I typically grouped squads based on force functionality, types, and unit proximity. Suffice to say, I'm probably going to whip something up to remedy this, while still giving Sergeants the choice of squad members.

That would be something more agreeable. Drops are usually taken into account (Ex: I was given specialist class 1 kill early because I've been around for a long while.) I'm all for balancing the game, but more on a "give more to support" than "take away from everyone else" level.

Also, you keep mentioning deployment/drop points. If you're talking about showing up, then I'm not really willing to award points merely on that, since some people can't show up due to timezoning/IRL things, and a good portion of players drop out midway for a variety of reasons.

Also, you DO realize that it costs us points to redeploy units, no? And these points are gained by kills of ALL units, botted or not. Like all those shiny tanks, droid buddies, air strikes, and air supplies? Cost points do send them to you. Which carry over from each game.

So yeah, there is a bit of communal kill-point sharing thing going on, but it's up to your CO (or a TA/Lt.) to use them.

Right, that's in line with what I know. Because those and our achievement of mission objectives are the most effective measure that we have of how well we're doing as a unit, since there are reductions involved for requisitioning additional forces, bailing ourselves out with airstrikes, and deploying heavier equipment, it makes sense that we would use them as a measure for unit advancement.

If we're getting our asses kicked without killing anything in return and have to bail ourselves out by drawing heavily on our point reserve, we're doing worse and thus get less experience points. If we're slaughtering everything and taking no hits, then we're being super-elite and should get experience points, as a unit, which reflect that.

Or perhaps this should just be used as your leveling metric, Major, since you're nominally the one responsible for our performance.

Dragon pushes another bug corpse off the train. "Q*expletive* chumps."

The last battle was everything he wanted. It was a chance to blow up bugs, a chance to blow up a tank, and a very satisfying hand to hand kill. Still the best part to him was Colton's death.

All this time he cared nothing for his life. Clones were bred to die, and he was going to spark violently before he went, but he never attached this label to the other clones. He was so obsessed with his mortality, everyone else was immortal to him. The sudden pain when his friend was lost only to be found again....it was nothing he had ever experienced.

All that was on Dragon's mind was war, booze, and the next chance to make a quick buck in a game of cards. If only he didn't have to repair this damn train he might have been able to swindle his friends out of some pocket change.

He was built for manual labor, hell he could probably pass for a small knight, but that doesn't mean he liked it.

Talking about Aggoria seems to have left Ghost looking tired. "Nightmares are common after fighting the enemy up close like that. Enough to make anyone scream. Or perhaps the scream was from waking up to find someone troop snooping around in place he shouldn't have been." You can tell Ghost doesn't think highly of Dragon after catching him in that situation. "As for the other thing, it is against military regulations. Aberham knows it, you SHOULD know it."

Time. Time was all Dominique had at the moment-but he didn't mind. In fact, he was happy. People said that you had traumatic visions, that you were shaken by the combat, by killing. But in reality, Dominique was pretty sure that only applied when you actually killed people. Though there was fear. Fear, and that sense of anticipation. That longing, as the swarm came. The feeling of a colossus, coming to ram its' fist into them-and wanting to meet it head-on, grinning. The skull and crossbones on his helmet was nice...but Dominique was going to have to get a grinning faceplate one of these days. Just to show them that on the inside, beneath the cross and the steel on his armor, Dom was laughing. He was always laughing, always hysterical when the swarm came. He had drawn first blood-he was a soldier now. And while he was concerned for the mental state of some of the soldiers, there was a sense of...*Rightness* to this. A sense that this was the way things were meant to be. Fearless soldiers, throwing themselves against impossible odds-and winning, under the leadership of a stern, but caring commander.

Let the floods come. Dom was ready for them.

Reminiscing done, Dom simply followed the voices and comm chatter, looking for the nearest group of people.

...Which happened to be the little group containing Dragon, Aberham, Howe, and others.

His entire mouth’s tiny biosphere of biofilm was gone, and he could swear that there was a faint minty flavor. His bones felt out of proportion, his lungs too clean, and that wasn’t mentioning that he was as bald as a new egg down there…

    >A nice little break from RPing, fellas.

Okay, here's one of the squad templates I promised. Of course, this doesn't mean it MUST include these exact number of units, and Sergeants may take the liberty of altering the squad composition as they see fit.

This is the basic BiTank-defensive squad. Most movements will, of course, be centered about the BiTank, which has the most firepower. Knights will hold the line, while Medics heal or repel rockets and Mobile Demo's fire over the Knights. This squad is more likely to make up the center of formations due to their predicted ability to deal and take a lot of damage.

Included are two basic maneuvers. The first is a pivot about the end of the Knight line, which is good if the squad is moving out of cover. The BiTank will move the furthest, and will likely draw the most fire. The second is a pivot about the BiTank, which is much more useful in situations where there is little cover, and the BiTank acts as a shield to the rest of the squad.

Right, this is the basic medium-short range squad, the bread-and-butter of our forces.

Real basic, mostly Riflemen and Mobile Demo, but this time an Anti-Armor unit is in the mix. This squad is more about firepower, as well as flexibility. It can handle smaller groups of units, as well as even take on some armored ones with the anti-tank unit.

Again, pretty simple, the two maneuvers there are simply repositioning ones. The first would allow for the Anti-Armor to fire while the remaining squad moves into a better position, while the second provides covering fire for the rest of the squad to move.

    >Hey all! Sorry I'm late!

Lost’s eyes sprung open and she promptly rolled onto her side and retched noisily. She’d had Psi-Comm Accelerated Sleep Protocol before, but today ASP lived up to its name. A dizzy whirling torrent of images and emotions and feelings had bombarded her, and she had not pull out of the raging stream of all the pain and hate and anger she had ever felt condensed into an hour’s span. She. Could. Not. Wake. Up. Only after it was done, only after the allotted time had expired did Psicomm relinquish its hold on her mind, and she could slip back into reality. And sick up.

Only after washing the taste out of her mouth with some canteen water did she make her way from behind the ammo crates that had provided a little privacy during the rest. Pale and not just a little shaky, she paused as she heard her name on the wind. Alarmed, she peered over a container of AP rounds, and watched as a rocket soldier she thought was named Dragon started questioning Aberham about her. Besides the first few words, it was all lost to her. She thought about getting closer, but if they saw her, they would certainly stop…

Biting her lower lip, she reached out. Not with her hand, but with a mental image of her hand. She willed a part of herself to reach out beyond herself, like it had in the dreams, like the minds of the xenos had reached out to her. She pushed with all her mind and then, like a flood, she was outside herself. Not all of her, not even any great deal, but a part of her she could feel, almost see, wavering in the air in front of her, tasting the thoughts which radiated from everywhere.

Almost as quickly she wanted to pull it back in. Strong, violent waves pushed through the skies, massive thick thoughts of the base, violent emotions she had now related to the xenos. Filtering them out, trying to ignore them, took away some of the sting, but the part of her that was outside her mind still rocked like a small boat in a stormy sea. Trying to ignore it, she reached out…

…and lightly placed a finger on Aberhams mind. The shock nearly made her recoil. She had never imagined the human mind would be such a roiling place, especially Aberham’s, who had always seemed so collected and kind. Waves of irritation built to anger as Dragon went on and on, and Lost could not only hear the words, but all the reactions they caused in Aberham.

It was like walking through a battlefield. Each word exploded into thoughts. Emotions rippled through like shockwaves with every connected memory, every associated emotion, braking away from it like shrapnel. It was all too much, like riding a wild horse without saddle or bridle, an angry stallions that wanted nothing more then buck you off and trample underneath. What she could see in his mind, what she could understand, told her one thing: that what she was doing was wrong, akin to rape. Quickly she cut the connection, only to have realized that Aberham had walked off.

Guiltily Lost slid down behind the ammo crate and leaned back on the box, dejected. Had he felt it? Did he know it was her? Could he? Lost was suddenly filled with so much guilt it was almost unbearable. How could she have done that? Just reached out without asking? Without even knowing what would happen? She wanted nothing more then to tell him, to apologize, but what would Aberham do? She could see him now, bursting out laughing, calling her insane. Or maybe really thinking she was. Or maybe thinking she really was telling the truth, and him and Walker handing her over to Fierstrom to have her brain dissected, or…

Right, this here is the basic Sniper squad. Notice the two additions - a Mobile Demo and a Rifleman. Yes, they are there for a reason - so the Snipers don't get ganked by a bug with enough brain cells to realize that Snipers don't do too well up close.

No real maneuvers for this squad - they will be mostly stationary. Mobile Demo are to lay down traps, while Riflemen pick off anything that gets too close. The Sniper squad, if deployed properly, can be both offensive and defensive. Offensive, in that it can be great for pinning enemy forces or ambushes. Defensive in making the enemy to afraid to pop their ugly heads out of cover.

This squad can also benefit from an Anti-Armor unit, in which case the squad can serve in ambushing larger, more heavily armed targets. The addition of an Armored Gyroid APC would allow the squad a greater range of movement and ability to deploy at key defensive areas.

While these squads are all pretty tactically sound as far as I can tell, I maintain my position that our force is small enough (usually) that it would benefit from flexibility. Which means: functionally no squads. Also one might want to consider the fact that completely new enemies and challenge can happen at any point. That said I still think having squads for compiling/ rping/ and other administrative type deals is well and good.

Right, since we rely on Predators so much, this squad, the basic suppressive fire squad, hinges on the sheer volume output of Predators. It functions much like the standard Rifleman squad, however is much more offensive in nature.

The Predator is to lay down a field of fire, giving the Riflemen and Mobile Demo time to establish lines of fire. The Medic will move along with them, ready to repel any RPGs fired at the Predator.

In essence, this squad is best used for flanking; a bit of the opposite of the BiTank squad, which is better for direct-conflict.

These are essentially for when we do have enough people to warrant squads (+10), in which case it's simply a general guideline for Sergeants to organize their squads so they can have a more defined role.

Of course, most of these squads are made to be a bit more flexible, and can be tweaked.

" It's called the flux." Janice says over the din, " monkey wrench. The universe is in a constant state of it, and our bodies, our minds the atoms that form our thoughts adhere to this grand scheme, its in our genes, we're all connected by this basic string called the flux. The question is, to what degree do we identify ourselves on the flux. Most clones are aware of each other even if they're galaxies apart due to their similarities in make up, or rather-- their Flux, their genes their dynamic of change sometimes mesh. If we dial ourselves back to the very beginning, we can find out where we originated and what form we. all of us. took.
The flux propogates, it progresses, expands and once it hits a critical point collapses in on itself before all our points of change of progression lead back to the point of origin. Plyers, please, and turn off the power to module A. Now if one was to read this trend, this change, this.. FLOW, one can deduct at an intuitive level where these leylines will go. It's advanced deduction is all it is. We see a corner of a cube and then we deduct a CUBE exists but how big ? Where is it placed ? This is where those touched with the Flux comes in and tells you that the red cube is a photo of a box taken in my home at Terra. That person has never been to Terra, nor have they even seen a physical photograph. But they knew, through some unraveling of the Flux they knew. Ok I want you to turn it on now. Good. "

The dark room is shaded in an ocean blue, every screen illuminating a person's face hooked up to a machine.

"Everything you need to know about the universe is in a tiny bread crumb. Those with the talent for reading into the flux will know where the pieces connect. And when they look at you, they will know exactly how you fit, how they fit, and how a xeno will fit in the grand scheme of things. Our job is to make sure that they know what to do when that happens and where things should connect. Gentlemen, let me introduce you to PSIComm. "

I remember Kilroy, actually. He was a ...Knight? I think. Not sure exactly. I remember you charged, and probably died.

Also, we're riding a train into a hive, with a nuke? This is my fetish.

He was a riflemen...he stood around, then died. His crowning achievement was wounding a bug.

Warsaw, fortunately, is much more awesome!

Have to wait for the battle to see, but I think the basic plan right now is drive both trains in. Shoot stuff. Capture the queen. Set the timer on Mr. Smiley (the BOMB) and run for dear life.
