You are Bertram Gillivers; in the present, a Court Alchemist caught up in a web of extradimensional intrigue. In the past, an apprentice on the threshold of adulthood, confronted with the terrible knowledge that your bitter mentor has machinated your powerlessness in the face of your father's execution for alleged treason.

Fulgrim is at work when you enter his chambers. A row of potted plants sit on a worktable, most of them dead and withered. Several beakers sit over flames, producing mist innocuously. Fulgrim himself holds a bottle in one hand and a dropper in the other, applying some sort of gelatinous liquid to the surface of one of the surviving plants. He watches thoughtfully as the plant withers like the others, scratching his chin.
"I don't think it's working," you say, entering with the wine and setting it on a table.
"Don't be naive, it's the most effective defoliant I've ever developed," Fulgrim snaps back, striding over to the table and snatching up the wine. "How was your 'family business'?" he asks, uncorking the bottle. You can hear the air quotes, even with his hands full.
"It went...as expected" you say sullenly.
"Oh? And how are the folks?" Fulgrim says. He seems practically giddy, trying to goad you into a confrontation.
You stare into his abominable face.
"They're fine," you say, your voice steely.
"Oh?" Fulgrim says, pouring himself a goblet of wine. Reaching into his robes, he produces a letter, slightly crinkled from weeks of concealment.
"This would suggest otherwise, I think, apprentice," he says with a sadistic smile.

We should tool up our robes. I'm assuming either the Sunsphere or the Dragon's Blood is some kind of heat or flame-based weapon? Let's try to stick it in a tube that pops outwards in a stream of flame, and fit one into our sleeve that we can trigger by hand.

I see no issue. Optimise our equipment, kill Fulgrim with it.

Seriously, I am of the opinion we should kill him. I would have advocated poisoning that wine. We either shut up and put up or kill him, a middle ground will just be bad for us and good for him. So we need to decide.
    >> Anonymous 10/22/10(Fri)22:39 No.12539609
I assume we are currently un-armed. Quickly survey the room, to see if there are any weapons we could use if it comes down to that. Meanwhile keeping him talking, ask him why he kept the letter from us.

Can we just leave his apprenticeship? Because if we can seriously, roll out, grab books on the way out and take the awkward maid to be our own apprentice.
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 10/22/10(Fri)22:54 No.12539783
Mind clouded by rage, you can think of nothing but Fulgrim's death. He waves the letter in your direction. You can piece together eight different poisons from the bottles scattered about the room, but you maintain your calm, sequestering your shaking hands in the folds of your robe.
"It's obvious you know everything isn't fine...why the games?"
Fulgrim unfolds the letter, peering at it as he swirls the goblet in one hand.
"It's quite the interesting read," he says, ignoring your question. Casually, he passes the letter through one of the flames beneath a bubbling beaker, watching the aging parchment catch like kindling.
"A pity, apprentice," he says, dripping venom from his lips. He raises the goblet to his mouth, making appreciative noises with his mouth as he slurps down a mouthful of wine.

If I'm right in assuming he's already dead due to the wine, it might not matter. No, I think it's best if we just vow quietly to ourselves to make him pay. Plan to one up him or subtlely ruin one of his experiments so he goes mad wondering why something doesn't work when we know all along what would make it work. Things like that. He still does have lots of knowledge we can use after all.

Fuck that. We neither want to betray the memory of our father by compromising to work with his killer, nor do we want to adopt the sadism of Fulgrim in enacting our revenge. We should leave, and study, and one day return to kill Fulgrim. Not out of cruelty, but out of justice.

I don't fully understand the system in StonerDM's world but I don't think we have a choice. From what I can gather, we were assigned to someone and we have to learn from them until we go past the apprentice stage and I'm not sure what determines that. That and despite this guy is a huge jack ass and teaches us like trash, he HAS been teaching us on top of everything. He just has a very twisted way of doing it...

    "I'm leaving, Fulgrim."
Fulgrim guffaws, wiping the ashes of your father's final correspondence from his fingers like breadcrumbs.
"Good, get out. I'll be sure to tell the other Masters of your incompetence and headstrong recklessness. Why don't you go home and tell your father you decided to spend your life working the land after all. Oh," he stops, taking another sip of wine. The giggles come too quickly for him to avoid spilling some of the dark liquid down his chin. "Oh, that's right. My apologies, apprentice, it seems like you've nowhere at all to go. You could go try and sell your knowledge to the Confederacy, and then we can drag you back here and hang you as a traitor, collect the whole set, as it were."

"How goes the search for a better apprentice?" you spit out.
Fulgrim shrugs. "I am past dealing with apprentices. You'll be my last, thank the old gods." He smiles, taking another sip of wine and nodding at you. "You know, boy, you do have some talent, loathe though I am to admit it. With your," he points to the pile of ashes on the desk, "...family connections severed, you've still got...got..."
Fulgrim squints, mouth slightly agape. He screws his face up in agony, succumbing to a coughing fit. When he pulls his hands away from his mouth, his eye twitches slightly as he beholds the dark wet stains on his flesh. Spitting up more blood, he laughs wetly to himself before looking askance at you.
"Heh...you've still got potential, b-boy," he struggles to get out the last word, falling into more coughing fits. His body has begun to shake uncontrollably, and he knocks the bottle and goblet aside, spilling wine all over the desk and papers. The ashes of your fathers letter are churned into a purple paste.

Fulgrim tries to stand, but falls to the ground with a crash, muscles seizing uncontrollably. You take a step towards him, but you are distracted by motion at the doorway.
"Yes, Fulgrim, one of the servants said you...needed...?"
One of the Master Alchemists, Treyor Podrin, strides through the door, looking about in bewilderment.
"P...poison..." Fulgrim manages weakly, pointing a shaky finger in your direction.
Podrin casts a grave glance in your direction. Murder isn't exactly rare in the Imperial court, but it is conducted with a degree of secrecy, Hushblades and the like. To kill your own master, with poison delivered by your own hands; it seems so...uncouth.
"Apprentice," Podrin says quietly. "What have you done?"

    Podrin cocks an eyebrow.
"...Possible, I suppose. But I'll have to involve the authorities. You'll get a chance to tell your story."
You look down at Fulgrim. His eyes are locked to yours, and you watch as he grits his teeth, the light fading from his face until he collapses limply in a puddle of blood and wine.

Hierotoria's Judicium is a crowded and miserable affair, filled with the dregs of the Imperium that the Imperial court is built upon. Murderers, thieves, rapists, all bumping shoulders in the old stone of the Judicium, a holdover to the days of border wars, of the council of Knights, of the law of the sword and not merely of the noose; of the days before alchemy and empire.
Murderers. You are lumped in with all the rest, calmly awaiting trial in one of the Judicium's upper cells. The stone is dry and the meals come twice a day; you suspect you are among the best treated prisoners in the complex. In your dark solitude you've mulled over events in your mind. As best as you can figure, someone must have realized that Fulgrim had kept from you your father's letter, and seized at the opportunity to frame you for his poisoning using a convenient wave of circumstantial evidence. It is fortunate that your master burned the letter, or your case would be wholly lost.

That's the major flaw of /tg/ quests, either idiots make stupid decisions and the DM goes with it or trolls who damn well know better make decisions and the DM picks those. Not the DM's fault, but such is the way it goes, maybe we should ask the Alchemist where the servant is who got him? If we can find her, we might be able to find evidence that she set this all up. I will damn well suggest we bring some offensive tools with us though. Shit could get nasty, yo.

A guard with musket lazily shouldered unlocks your chamber; two figures stand behind him in the torchlight shadows.
"Visitors, young master," the guard says with a commoner's accent. He leaves a torch in the previously empty wall sconce and waits outside the cell door, within earshot and eyeshot.
"You should have just gotten this over with years ago, then I wouldn't even owe you this favor," a sharp female voice says. Lady Stelton steps into the dim light of your cell, smirking at you. Her manservant remains hooded and silent.
"I didn't do this," you say insistently. She chuckles. She is barely thirty, yet her eyes betray more age than the rest of her face, which is still coldly beautiful.
"It hardly matters if you did. They're going to wrap it around your neck; whoever set you up," she gives a knowing look, "if anyone did at all, they're going to be dripping honey in all the right ears when this comes to a real trial, and at the very least you'll lose your alchemist's appointment. I can make this go away."
You are wary of her involvement, but eager for assistance. "...go on..."
"The Empire's discovered some islands across the sea; it's a journey of many months. I've managed my father's political assets well, and I have more influence than he ever did shut up in his lab. I can put you on that boat, and get these charges lost in the paperwork. You'll be gone for years, overseeing the study of foreign lands. By the time you get back, few will remember the murder of Giles Fulgrim, who didn't have particularly many friends, and fewer will care."

"News, for one thing. I've been out of touch for some months, and I daresay that my reappearance is likely to be rather rough for me politically. What's been happening?"
Blackheed sighs. "The Emperor's been in a gridlock with the Confeds, and with the house of nobles. He's trying to make peace, to get an exchange going, but all they want is to show the Imperium how much better than us they are, and all the nobles want is war."
"Who can I trust? Your people have plants in our government, and presumably the main army does as well."
Blackheed nods as well. "It's difficult to try and uncover plants on this end without risking exposing myself, but spies on the home side of the Rift have discovered a few sleeper agents, mostly servants or artisans sitting on local guilds. I have the distinction of being the highest-ranked 'invader' in your world," he says with a small smile. "To tell the truth, after being here for so many years, I've grown quite used to the comforts of this place. I hardly even miss the arcane air anymore. I can get you a list of those contacts, by the way, though I believe you move in high enough circles that most aren't worth worrying about."
"Well then...speedy transportation to the capital, and the support of your servants and allies there--a letter signed and stamped by you should prove sufficient. Lodging at the capital if you have any residences there. Sebastion, am I forgetting anything obvious?"

we can probably trust the good Lady Stelton. Whether or not she'll help us is another question though.
    My Reasoning:
She Sent us to the Island, so either she was just repaying her debt to us by saving our lives OR she knew something the rest of us didn't.
IF she knew, then she would have either sent us in hopes that we died or that we survived. If she had hopes that we would die there then she might as well have let us be hanged and if she didn't want us to die there then she would probably be open to helping us in informing the rest of the world about it.
If she didn't know, then it's really a moot point. (though I consider this possibility quite improbable)

There is of course the possibility that she sent us to lead the expedition to ensure that it failed (us being very inexperienced and incompetent)

We might want to spend some time training Dask. If he's supposed to be our homonculus in the worst case scenario, we're going to need to be able to control it at least a little.

Alternatively, talk to Blackheed about his people's technology perhaps. We took parts from the ship and maybe he can provide some insight into how we might be able to use it for our own needs. If we could, it would help prove an outside force is going to invade us.

Either Blackheed's cooks pull out some serious stops, or the man eats like a king on a daily basis. A tender suckling pig glistening with juices forms the centerpiece of a cavalcade of meats, fruits, cheeses, and veritable fountains of wine.
"To the Imperium," Blackheed toasts. "May it withstand the eons." The implications hang heavily over the table, and everyone clinks their glasses with no further dialogue for several moments.
Dask'tchk looks miserable in homonculus garments, his tattered hide cloak having been taken from him. Over the course of the afternoon you've gotten him to come when he's called and to hold onto objects without gnawing on them.
"Gillivers," Fierna says as you begin to eat. "I have been meaning to thank you. For shooting down our pursuers, and for not turning me over to your council of Alchemists. You are a truly honorable example of your race. If more humans were like you..." she laughs, a single short syllable, and looks almost embarrassed. "If...more of my people were like you, I would be confident that we could avoid a war. At best, I am merely hopeful."

You raise your glass in turn.
"To cooperation," you intone, then, more somberly, "...to survival."
    "Here here," Blackheed says.

"Tell me, if you would," you say sometime later, when the rate of consumption is finally slowing. "How does your technology work? Are there any weaknesses, or strengths, that we could make use of here?'
Blackheed licks his fingertips around a mouthful of pork.
"The greatest advantage you...we...have at this time is that this world is not densely arcane enough to consistently fuel war machines that draw their power from the magic of the land; in order to bring their full power to bear on you, they will have to permanently fuse our worlds, flooding this one with magical energy. Energy that you can use. That's why the element of surprise is so valuable to them, and also why you cannot risk exposing yourself needlessly. They will take the advantage of surprise before any other tactic. For our part, we can feed you 'miraculous innovations' based on our technology, though they will require an amount of arcane energy that will be puzzling to your peers."

So we can't show the technology we've captured as proof of invasion, because if their spies found out they'd crank their invasion scheme to full bore. This also means we can't even present our findings in open court--we'll have to get this information to the Imperial leadership quietly and covertly.

How are they planning to pass along the "miraculous innovations", and do they have a planned way for us to request certain things?

"I would highly recommend it," Blackheed says. "Aside from the warhawk/peacemonger dichotomy beyond the Rift, our culture is a unified one. Yours is fragmented, often hostilely so, and while this makes for an interesting cultural study, it will not serve you well during war. You need as many allies as you can possibly gather without drawing attention to yourself."
"Speaking of your unified culture," you say. "And to guide the talk away from strategy and doomsaying, what sort of culture is it exactly?"
"We are ruled by a Primarchate, a dozen or more of our wisest minds made interminably united in a single intellect. When one of their bodies finally gives away, we choose from among our number one to join. Occasionally someone will distinguish themselves enough to warrant membership in addition to those already within the group mind. We place all our trust in these individuals-made-individual. This system streamlines dissent within the group mind itself, so their decisions are pre-deliberated from among their many consciousnesses, and are generally accepted without debate. That is part of the reason for such widespread support of the war effort."

Blackheed spreads his hands, looking around him.
"Here I sit. Obviously some of us do, but the majority has grown complacent and fat on the Primarchate's wisdom throughout the years. I admit myself this seems the only instance in which they have been steered wrong. Perhaps it is we who are wrong, and they are merely detached enough to realize which course of action would best benefit our race, but I cannot live comfortably on soil won by genocide and conquest.
"Wasn't your world unified through conquest?" you ask.
"Wasn't your Empire unified through conquest?" Blackheed counters. "That does not mean all Imperials are war thirsty. It is a poor man that lives his life based solely on the examples of his others. A man who looks around him and sees only his betters is a poor example of a man."

"Fascinating. Where is this Primarchate located--must all the members be physically present in one place? And will it need to be the Primarchate that is convinced that the war is not a good idea, or would subordinate generals be able to call it off?"
Blackheed thinks for a moment. "The Primarchate's seat is in the center of our greatest city. Once a Primarch's body joins the group mind it never leaves. They live only to serve and advance our race. Convincing them would be...difficult. A dozen egos all acting in synergy, and bolstered by the popular notion that they are the most brilliant members of their race; that is a difficult opponent to debate. The other option is to foment a revolution, which would hopefully be over as quickly as possible, but is nevertheless something best avoided. Perhaps a show of force on the part of humanity can force a peace."
Fierna nods in agreement; this was the plan of action she mentioned earlier; illustrate to the invaders that the element of surprise is lost and that the only way to victory is through a grueling slaughterhouse of a war, and suddenly peace talks seem like a much more reasonable option.

Blackheed looks at you blankly. Fierna coughs softly. The silence goes on for far too long. Blackheed blinks several times, taking a long sip of wine.
"Let me make something perfectly clear, Master Gillivers. We are strongly opposed to the genocidal conquest of your race. We are strongly in favor of peace. What we are not in favor of is the subservience of our race, of our culture's heart and soul, albeit flawed, to a foreign intelligence, if such a thing were even possible. We wish for co-existence, but we will not be stamped out." he points a thin finger across the table. "Make no mistake, if your people will not have peace, if they fester with the same greed as our Primarchate, there will be no voices calling for war louder than our own."
Fierna makes a small cough again. Blackheed slowly calms.

So they'd halve the amount of living space. That's a desperate move by any account. I'm thinking if they're willing to do that, they're going to need more than just a show of force to dissuade them. Furthermore, we'd need to have military units all throughout the land at key areas, not just massed near portals (technically they'd still need massing, but you couldn't draw a real line of battle the same way). So they're attacking now before this happens... why? To draw our forces into a single location where the can be easily avoided during the merger would make sense, but I don't think that's it--are they seriously expecting a full collapse of the human military and government before this happens?

Are they going to have the full amount of magic when it's done? I remember something about magic being 50/50--is that when the merging begins or after it's ended?

"The arcane energies will leak through to a half-and-half ratio, at which point the magical advantage of our species will be lost. We're prepared to take a technological step back when the saturation of magic decreases, but the Primarchate wants a decisive victory before that saturation is lost to us. The dinner winds down as the expansive spread of food becomes a decimated landscape of bones and rinds. Gradually the survivors of the ship's crew drift away to the quarters arranged for them, and Dask climbs inside the remains of the suckling pig and goes to sleep amidst the juices and meats.
"I take my leave of you, goodsir Gillivers," Blackheed says. "I will speak with you again in the morning before your departure."
Fierna remains at the table, hair falling over her solid eye.
