(some unfinished business from last time)

The injured Major Pax promises you a full report after her Bacta treatments. An attending medical droid politely but insistently shoos you out.

    >"Major Madine, how well do you believe we could craft a fake transmission to the Exigency fleet at Procca Major? The communication would originate from the Hierarch, and report that the escaping vessel has been destroyed but that the Hierarch's hyperdrive has been disabled.
"Such a course of action should allow us more time to clean out the rest of the civilian ships."

Major Madine points to Valin. "We're holoscanning the captain right now. Faking transmissions won't be a problem. A recommendation, sir. Exigency repair ships could arrive in under two hours, but the same trip on backup drives would take six times as long. It might buy us more time if we tell them the Hierarch is damaged but returning to base under its own power."

"Very good, major," you observe his body language, "but there's something else you wanted to tell me."

Madine is obviously not happy with the prospect he's facing. "Sir, the Hierarch has a crew of over 38,000. If they stage a revolt, my troops onboard won't stand a chance. And that's not even considering sabotage. Holding onto that ship in the long run might call for marooning the entire crew somewhere planet side. I've run the numbers. If we commandeer the larger civilian freighters in a suitable system, we can move all of the Hierarch's people and supplies in under a day."

    Orders?

You've received a status report from Commander Vosk:

Repairs on schedule. Virus purged or contained from all ships in system. Restoration of ESD Hierarch database ongoing. Basic functions restored to IS Ephemera, ESD Hierarch, 9 civilian freighters. Irreparable navicomp damage to 39 remaining ships. Engineering teams state temporary slave-rigging will allow two synchronized hyperspace jumps to neighbouring systems before permanent navicomp failure. If we dock the smaller freighters internally we can take the flotilla to hyperspace in 8 hours. Full overhaul of damaged ships will require resources of Lidaan, Procca Major, or Harridan port facilities.

Security situation precarious. All available personnel are either aboard the Hierarch or already among the civilian flotilla. We can recover the fighters from the Hierarch but have the reserve personnel to field only one additional squadron.

    ISD Ravenous. Undamaged

    I have a counter-proposal.
The civilians will initiate synchronized hyperspace jumps to Lidaan (under the assumption that Lidaan's orbital facilities will be able to repair their navicomps).

The false message to the Exigency fleet should indicate that the Hierarch will make its way to them under its own power, with a damaged hyperdrive. Estimated time to be 6 hours.

With Commander Vosk and Major Medine, I'd like to see if the crew of the Ephemera could be used to crew the Hierarch.

In light of the current situation that the Empire finds itself in, I believe that the crew of the Hierarch (disloyal) should be offered the chance to resign their commissions from Imperial service and take a civilian transport to Lidaan.
They should be reminded that they are Imperial officers and Navy personnel, and that if they cannot carry out their Imperial duty given to them by a duly appointed Imperial command officer in service to the Galactic Empire, that they should remove themselves now, before they further besmirch their uniform.
It should never have to be a droid to remind a human of their duty.

Space the crew of the exigency vessel. During this time of crisis, opportunistic raiders are the last things we need.

Set the ship's core to overload and fly it into the enemy force besieging the planet. That should help.

Once Captain Valin is recovered to the minimum safety requirements of the medical droids, he is to be awakened to provide details concerning the Exigency task force sieging Procca Major.
They won't be expecting an attack, and I suspect that as the sector fleet command base, it's still putting up a fight.
If we jump out on their flank, we would have the advantage of surprise. Even if the Hierarch is operating with a skeleton crew, it should still be able to put up a fight.
Engineering teams are to prioritize repairs to the shield generators, so that the Hierarch can survive acting as a shield and draw enemy fire.

The acting captain of the Hierarch requests time to discuss the situation with his crew. Judging from his reaction it appears he's personally eager to get out of this alive.

Captain Tanner of the Ephemera informs you he's willing to have his people crew the Hierarch temporarily, but he wishes to speak to you in person once the immediate crisis is over. He feels he's done his duty in deliver Major Pax to you, and his people should not become embroiled in this regional conflict.

Vosk reports TIE fighters from Talon squad are under attack while approaching the freighter Gamma-30. The sizable vessel raises shields and opened hidden gun ports, dropping all pretense of being a typical cargo hauler. It dives into the middle of the civilian traffic to avoid the Ravenous. Your gunners won't be able to hit it without blowing away half the flotilla.

Wing commander Senn is requesting permission to launch torpedoes. Odds of collateral damage is significant, but it's also the quickest way to bring down the freighter. If it turns on the other ships your shuttles out there won't stand a chance.

    >Captain Tanner of the Ephemera informs you he's willing to have his people crew the Hierarch temporarily, but he wishes to speak to you in person
Captain Tanner has a point. He is an Imperial Loyalist who is not attached to this Sector Command, and so after the end of the current crisis, he should be allowed to return to his home sector.

We need to know the disposition of the enemy forces in Procca Major, and how well the system's defenses are holding, or if they've already fell.

Also, we need to have Major Medine use his experience in Imperial Intelligence, and see if we can disguise the Ravenous' transponder codes with those of the Hierarch. In case we don't bring the Hierarch with us to Procca Major because they might stab us in the back, doing this should let us get in close with the Exigency task force; then we send concussion and proton torpedoes right up their drive exhausts.

You order the gunboats to launch torpedoes. A alarmed Madine appears onscreen. "Sir, my people are still out there."

"And I'm ensuring they don't all perish in this ordeal." You answer.

Senn's gunboat accelerates ahead of her squad. "Hold tight Talons, we're on our way. Venom squad, sunspiral on me. Launch torpedos on my mark... mark!"

The hostile freighter hugs the flotilla, but the torpedoes are not tracking its position. Instead they head directly after Senn's own gunboat. Her ship turns and sways until the torpedoes in her wake converge into a single tight knit swarm. She weaves through the civilian traffic at full thrust, pulling away from her mark at the last instant. The less maneuverable torpedoes broadside the same section of the freighter one after another. The ship's hull is carved in two.

The maneuver is impressive if lacking in restraint. Nearby freighters, many with their shields down, are buffeted by the expanding cloud of plasma and debris. Panicked cries for help flood the comms. Several freighters attempt to maneuver away from the fireball with shuttles still docked. Your bridge crew races to calm the captains and prevent further collisions.

Damage reports from the flotilla are coming in. No fatalities. Several of the nearby ships are damaged, but none critically. This will add to repair times.

Out of the sudden deluge of comm traffic, a message from the destroyed freighter grabs your attention. The holographic ghost of its dead captain cries out, "Mon Mothma lives!"

Commander Senn's fighter sustained minor damage. She is returning to dock. The forward section of the freighter miraculously remains largely intact.

Okay, JUST got done reading the previous thread and up to where we are now. Could you clarify some things for me OP?

The Extingency (previously in alliance/non agression with us) have uploaded some kind of self propagating virus into Procca Major's database/holonet thingy, and so a lot of our ships in this area are unable to go to Hyperspace.

Procca Major is currently under attack by an Extingency taskforce sent to take out our fleet piece by piece now that every ship but ours can't travel in hyperspace. We don't know how long they've been under attack or what the situation is at all, except that it's the sector capitol for our faction and is probably well defended.

    Do I have it right?

Further interrogation of captain Valin has yielded the following information:

    Exigency task force Alpha:
1 Tector Star Destroyer command ship
3 Imperial-I Star Destroyers (including Hierarch)
    1 Escort Carrier
    2 Nebulon B Frigates

20 remaining squadrons of fighter escorts

Fleet headquarters is protected at all times by at least 2 Star Destroyers. In addition to the planetary defenses, they would normally prove more than a match for the enemy. Some defenders may still remain, each fighting alone due to the virus, but the situation must be worsening as time passes.

Major Madine believes faking the transponder codes can be done. The deception may hold for some time, depending on how close the enemy examines your ship. (roll 1d10 if you want to attempt this)

The Ravenous goes in first, does as much damage as it can until it's cover gets blown.
Then the real Hierarch jumps in, starts firing towards the Ravenous (not hitting anything major), then when it gets close enough to the remains of the task force, hits them with close-range missile barrages.

The Exigency was in a state of non aggression with the Dantus sector as of 10 hours ago. They have launched an unprovoked two pronged sneak attack against fleet command and the sector capital. A form of the virus they used was given to them by the Imperial Intelligence Bureau (IIB), the current central authority of the empire and the power your sector is loyal to. It spreads through the system to system hyperwave communications grid and cripples the comms and navicomputer of any infected ships.

Its computers held the same partially effective innoculation codes against the virus present on all IIB ships. It's either stolen, or more unlikely, was given to them by the IIB.

Anything surviving in space for more than a few hours in an extend engagement is very unlikely. Procca Major's ground colony does have planetary shields, so some ground instillations may have survived. The fleet command starbase and ships have likely already been destroyed.

I have to agree with your assessment. We can't wait around that long, and our time window is at best 8 hours. I think we should have the Hierarch's crew transferred to the merchant fleet, and dropped off at Lidaan or Ortiza. The Hierarch should probably go to Lidaan, since it has an orbital dock, and might be able to get enough personnel to crew her effectively. Once it's got a skeleton crew needed to fight, it should jump to Procca Major, in case there's still fighting going on.

The Ravenous should do any repairs we need to, take some TIE Fighters if we've got the extra pilots, then jump to Procca Major.

Though somewhat understrength, we're still a fresh Star Destroyer.
The Exigency task force is likely weakened, and if we can crush them between us and the planetary defense batteries, we might be able to win.
Otherwise, we retreat to Lidaan with the Hierarch, get it staffed with loyal crew, then go in and attack the Exigency's Task Force Alpha. The problem though, is that they might have sent reinforcements by then.

    I say we fight now.

With the limited resources at your command, you think the fake transponder codes will hold up as long as your ship does nothing suspicious once you arrive in system and no one bothers to take a closer look at you. You have a convincing holo image of the Hierarch's captain. You can't depend on the transponder alone and may need to bluff the enemy face to face if the deception is to hold. Considering whatyou are, imitating a human is not one of your strong suits.

Though I have to wonder how their taskforce of only 3 SDs (down by one sicne they left the Hierarchy behind here) and a few support ships could have taken out our fleet command station; I mean, wouldn't such a place have at least that many ships of its own for defense, not to mention space defense platforms? Vosk. All he needs to do if convince them that he's the Hierarchy's captain so that we can get in range to blast them in their backsides. Once we get out of hyperspace, do a scan to see what the situation is, and try to get into position at the rear of the enemy fleet, possibly with the excuse that we're covering the rear against enemy reinforcements. If possible, have Vosk try to get more information on what's going on from the Extingency ships: who ordered the sudden betrayal, why did the IIB give them the virus, or really anything basic that people in the Extingency would know that could be beneficial to us.

I think Vosk would be a better candidate, considering that he's a long-time Navy officer and would know the right mannerisms and jargon better than Medine.
The cover story of why we're so ahead of schedule should be that we were able to repair our hyper drive enroute, and that the damage wasn't as bad as it seemed at first.
We'll then attempt to sneak ourselves into the rear of their formation, and once in range, fire all of our turbo laser batteries and missiles at the drive systems and reactors of the Exigency's ships. All TIE fighters and assault gunboats should launch, with the fighters escorting the gunboats to their targets, which will be the command bridges of the enemy ships.
Make sure that targeting data is passively acquired and loaded into everyones' targeting computers before launch.

I don't think Vosk should push his luck like this. We can get this information after the battle; the priority has to be to maintain the deception long enough to get within weapons range without tipping off the Exigency.

We should probably make sure to get any command code phrases and countersigns from Captain Valin before we drop out of hyperspace.

Ah, good point. And hey, that way we'll get to use the torture droids again!

In all seriousness, we should do our best to aim for their sublight and hyperdrive engines; if we can get behind them we'll have a perfect shot. With their sublight engines down, they'll have a hard time turning to face us and there aren't many weapons on a Star Destroyer that can fire behind it, so we'll be able to fire away at them with nigh-impunity.

The much abused Captain Valin is once again forced to give up more intelligence. Commander Vosk spends the next hour learning the particulars of Exigency address as best he can. All too soon, your ship drops back into realspace.

The colony's shields are still up, shielding two Victory Star Destroyers groundside. The corpse of Vanguard Station and various warships lie broken in space. At least they gave as good as they got. All enemy ships show signs of battle damage. The've retreated from the range of the ground batteries and are content to blockade the planet for now.

Most of the automated orbital batteries remain untouched. No doubt the virus had reached the station too and cut it off from its defenses. Several Exigency escorts are assembling some type of module nearby.

Your fighter wings deploy in escort formation. The comm. protocols complete without a hitch. A female navy officer's image appears.

"Captain Valin. Welcome back. I see you've salvaged a gunboat squadron. Good work. I trust your mission is a success?"
