    50 KB Mercenary Quest James !thDvoo2z2o 10/04/10(Mon)13:42 No.12326021
    My name's James. I'm a Mercenary.

Oh, wait, you probably guessed that already. Sorry. Let me get onto the meat of things.

I live in Avalon, a world of three continents: Sunburst, the western continent, Eegal, the central continent, and Tokam, the eastern continent. Currently I'm on Eegal, in Corvairus city. Corvairus is set on a magical leyline in the center of the continent, and is absolutely huge. You might say all roads lead to Corvairus, in one way or another. People come here to 'seek their fortune' in a myriad of ways. You've got magicians peddling magical weapons to fend off the various demons that roam the landscapes, the whores trying to peddle themselves, the men and woman peddling their skills with a blade...

I'm one of those, by the way...

And you have merchants, who deal in 'everything else', whether it be demon stones or drowly horns, or whatever. I've personally bought this scroll with some of the money from my last job. Appaerently, you, Legion, are the only demon that I can summon without any drawbacks or negatives. I guess you live through others vicariously.

Anyway, the reason I summoned you? I'm bad at making decisions. Not the brightest thinker, either. All I've got is my family longsword, a couple years of training, and... you, really, aside from my clothes and enough money to feed myself for a while.

I want to make it 'big'. And I need your help.
    >> Anonymous 10/04/10(Mon)13:46 No.12326056
Groovy, just as a heads up though... we'll be needing a great deal of tribute.
in lulz or in bitches, both when possible
first off: you're in Avalon; eat an apple!
    >> Anonymous 10/04/10(Mon)13:49 No.12326086
Tokam here. Sunburst is for gayfags.
    >> Anonymous 10/04/10(Mon)13:52 No.12326119
fall on your sword. there is nothing for you here.

    >advisar work
    I'm trying, Captcha!
    >> Servant of the Emperor 10/04/10(Mon)13:58 No.12326166
    Good, you're a Mercenary.
But, a single Mercenary isnt usually the one who's hired unless they're a proven one.
What you need is a Group, so we can look to join up with one, that would have experience and training, but majorly you'd be one of the lower ranked
Or, we could start our own, looking for other lone mercs and adventurers, or simply picking up people who want to get into the business from the beginning. They'll be weak, unorganized, But They'll Be Ours.

You summoned me for advice, but i cant order you to follow it.
    >> James !thDvoo2z2o 10/04/10(Mon)14:02 No.12326203
    >>12326119
What? No! Well, you get what you pay for...

    >>12326086
Sunburst and Tokam are actually in a state of cold war. If it weren't for the Leviathan Column, they would have obliterated one another by now. But, thanks to an enourmous nest of incredibly bloodthirsty sea monsters, their ships can't exactly do any of the warring nonsense unless they want to go the long way, around Eegal. And Eegal prefers both of its trading partners to be alive and well, you see? So all the countries are at peace, even if Tokams will happily slit the throat of Sunnies and Sunnies will be quite pleased to see a Tokam die painfully.

    >>12326056
How did you know my favourite food? I suppose I'll pick one up on the way through the market. Today is a special day, you see, and that's why I've summoned you to help me. Today is the day of the week that people come here and posit jobs for hire. That'll be happening in the main square of the city, in a couple of hours. Now, I've done a few jobs in my day, but I've only managed to scrape by out of extreme luck and manipulating circumstances to end the lives of those wishing to end me.

I'm afraid to say I've never actually killed anyone with my sword before.

I wonder... Should I armor myself better with the last of my funds, or should I save the money?

A group, Hm? Generally people hire us in crowds and split the money among survivors, as it is. Good idea, though. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Well James my friend, I have to remind you that you summoned a entity from another plane of existence to assist you, and as such i find it in my power to grant you a number of abilities. One of which 'May' be an infusion of my demonic power with your skin, hardening it like stone with keeping it the same weight, putting you a leg up over any mercenario with chainmail.

Now go on, fetch me an apple, and i may remember to make this armor when the need requires.

You should marry Lily, name your first kid Harry, and fight against Voldemort.

Not sure I'd want that... or that I'd want you to. You see, Demons have been invading since sometime before my birth. Luckily, there are barriers around the roads and the cities placed by the Loving Gods, but... it's only a matter of time before they figure out a way to subvert them.

And frankly, the less obvious it is that I'm harboring a demon the better. No offence.

what sort of armour could you afford? anything less than mail will be a waste, so save the money

go check the board for contracts I guess...

Don't pay any attention to him, we can't do jack. Most of our advice will be terrible, and some will make no sense at all. Also, we'll seem to be arguing amongst ourselves... a lot. But we can help you make decisions, and there will be the occassional nugget of true wisdom hidden in the din.

Try not to go crazy, though. Most people do after a while, what with the dozens of voices in their head, talking amongst themselves about things they can't understand. But you look like you could last a year or two without a complete mental breakdown.

That makes me much less than optimistic.

    >>12326627
Good point. Now, it's not exactly a board...

I arrive in the square, to see the Caller looking over the paper he holds, adjusting small glasses.

"Very well, then, we shall begin!" he shouts, his words ringing out to the large area clearly. "The first Job is posted by the Town of Maybury! They have reported that their barrier is failing, one of many in this past month. Thankfully, the rate is slow enough that they can escape... but they will need someone to guard their caravan as they make their way through the Weak Road. The pay is four hundred to the man, and they are taking a maximum of ten mercs! Will anyone step forth?"

"I shall!" calls a young woman, making me jump. She was right beside me! She stands and walks to the rotund Caller, who hands her a single copper coin: A sign of a taken job.

"Anyone else! Anyone? Anyone?" he calls. "There are four other jobs. Remember, you can come forth and request any of the jobs, so long as they are not filled. Anyone who would like this job will stand near..."

    She whispers.

"Anna Silver! right over there, miss, thank you Now, is that all for now?"

That woman looks like she can narry hold a blade much less swing one. Hmmmm, this could work.

Remember what i said about Tribute? You'd best raise your hand.

That and it's handy to do some guard work, usually rewarding and can be completely uneventful sometimes, This Miss Silver however could make it interesting...

How much is 400 hundred exactly?
    Barrier breaking? soo... demons?

How much do you have and how much would it cost to get you properly armoured? maile AND breastplate preferably

oh, and how hot is the chick? 1-10 standard scale I'll accept a 1 point deviancy but please try to be precise...

Demons are likely. Barriers often break when people stop giving their sacrifices to the Loving Gods. Now, not all demons are unstoppable killing machines, but then again, the ones that are...

Then again, 400 is enough for some rather nicely made half-plate, possibly a shield. A single gold piece feeds me for a week, so, there's that, too.

As for the lady... she isn't all that bad. I'd say a 7.

Ah, what the hell. You only live once.

    "I shall as well!"

I walk forth and take the coin. The woman eyes me quietly, but says nothing, and another, older man steps forth as well, his name... Darren Mcfee?

    Hm.

the woman is either extremely competent, or very rich and think she is competent.
Either we coast on her competence, or get to pull her ass out when she screws up, rendering her in debt to us.
    It's a win-win

I suppose that might be true one way or the other.

The Caller goes through the other jobs, most of them considerably more deadly than this one, and we pick up no new volunteers. Our contact, a young man named Giff, instructs us that our payment is actually waiting in this town's bank... but only the townspeople know the word to get it, and if the wrong ones die, well... too bad.

This is pretty commonplace. It protects the person from being killed by assholes who take the job and simply murder the contact to steal the money.

We approach the city gates on our horses, my own the only other inheritance from my family. The young woman has an exquisite white horse that is very well-groomed, while Mcfee just crosses his arms and sort of... floats in midair alongside us.

It's gonna be a bit of a trip. How should I break the ice?
