    >Tried this yesterday, no one bit, I'll try again later this week if no one is interested tonight, after that I'll politely shut up

Today is the day, your final test at the officers academy, your performance on this field will determine your first command and your posting in the Degnarian Legion. The test of course is a battle. Traitors, deserters, murderers and other military criminals sentenced to death have been formed into battalions, to fight under your command and that of your opponent. The golden coin lands in the Overseers hand, the Empeoros head facing upwards; you chose correctly when it was tossed! The overseer presents a list of battalions, both you and your opponent will choose 3 units from this list for the battle today.

    Legionary Battalion
Light Infantry Battalion (swordsmen in mail)
    Hunter Battalion
    Dwarven Warlord Auxiliary Battalion
    Dwarven Light Auxiliary
    Lacertan Berserker Auxiliary Battalion
    Lacertan Stalker Auxiliary Battalion

You look up to the tower overlooking the field, 5 of the Lord Commanders and the Emperors Second Praetorian, the man who commands the Emperors armies are watching from that tower, massive panes of magnifying glass allowing them to asses your performance, and ensure justice is meted out on these criminals.

You objective is either the capture of your opponents flag, or to route his forces. You can elect to choose your command first, defaulting flag selection to your opponent or you can allow your opponent to choose his forces first, and select which falg you will command from.

    >The flags are the blue and red dots on the map. The light gray circle is a valley, the dark gray circle a hill. the brown areas are dense undergrowth, the light green area forest and dark green area swamp. the field is one mile long and 2 wide.

fair enough, and yea, I'm saddened by the low turnout as well.

a tldr of the original post with my bump.
this is your test, a battle. either pick your units (phalanx, (self explanitory), skilled archers/infiltrators, dorfs in platemail w/greatweapons, dorfs in chainmail w/sword&board, slab-o-meat 8 foot lizardmen with bigass weapons, querilla warfare slab-o-meat lizardmen (all in that order on the list)) and let the other guy pick who deploys where or do it the other way around; command battle; get grade and a command; go on serious mission. in that order.

last self bump. maybe one more if I feel especially bored.

Your opponent selects the Dwarven Warlords, nods to you, salutes the observation tower and heads off the the southern flag on the hill. You do the same.

By the time you reach the flag your men are loitering about the valley it rests in. You head into your tent, where two armor racks are set up, on one your battered old chainmail and leather leggings rest, on the other your newly forged suit of Platemail in Imperial Crimson. Your old shortspear sits propped against a mostly empty table, on which your Commanders Helm and a freshly forged longblade rest, as does your chipped old circleshield. A new oaken tower shield is propped against the end of the table. You look at the tattoo you received upon joining the 371st light spears, you were the commander of that battalion before you were sent to this academy. The number will be scoured off soon enough, and an Imperial Dragon will need to be added to the tattoo somewhere.

    >What armor/Weapons do you want to wear into battle?
    >Deployment orders? (you are to hold the BLUE flag, your deployment zone is the light gray circle that denotes a valley, your foe will be deploying on the hill (dark gray circle) and holding the RED flag

    >>12237306
I'm confused on the map - is their flag on the hill or is it in the valley as well? Unless I read your old posts incorrectly, it seems like the red dot is in the valley as well rather than being on the hill.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 09/27/10(Mon)00:06 No.12237361
    >>12237344
I think I cleaned that up, you are at the blue flag in a valley (light gray circle), the other guy is at the red flag on a hill ((Dark Gray circle)
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:10 No.12237395
Yeah need new map. With all our light forces we need to concentrate on ambush, hit-and-run, and maneuvering. He choose to heavy units
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:11 No.12237405
    >>12237361
Then the only other question I need to know is can we move our flag or does it have to stay where it is?

If it has to stay where it is, I suggest we go in our more lightly armoured gear. Take the battered armour and old shield with the spear and sword. Then I recommend we use the Legionary unit as our center with the Hunter Batallion and light Dwarves further back on our flanks to make their archers come closer if they want to target them. Based on our opponents selection of units, I think we can expect him to be more offensive so I recommend we wait in the initial parts of battle and respond to him.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:12 No.12237421
Alright, i think we ought to stay defensive for now, have the light dorfs mill about near the flag, while the Archers and legion stands at the lip of the valley. Archers attack anything in range, legion defends them. Dorfs are reserve units.

Also can the archers use flaming arrows and burn the forests? cause that'd be sweet.

Also, also, does the enemy have any ranged units at all?

also, also, also i suspect the enemy will try to move the light lizards through the safety of the woods, keep an eye out for them.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 09/27/10(Mon)00:14 No.12237435
The only way you can move the flag is if you carry it yourself, and it can only be moved after the battle starts.

    > A note on lacerta, they are warmblooded and it is a fairly hot day, and they are naturally swamp-dwellers.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 09/27/10(Mon)00:16 No.12237449
    >>12237421
normally Hunters would have flaming arrows, but since it took a while to grow this training field, no.

Stalkers have throwing axes, normally 10-15.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:18 No.12237475
ok in that case have the hunters remain inside a kind of circle of legionnaires, if possible, so that they can use their shields and defend one of our only assets (our range)
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:19 No.12237478
    >>12237435
The I recommend two different plans then - move our flag into the forest and leave the hunter batallion and legionary unit defending it. The hunters are archers/infiltrators so they can harass the Lacertan units that are likely to enter the forest/swamp area and the legionary units should be heavy enough to survive for a bit of time. Then, we send in our light unit to take the hill if they send the Lacertan's and heavy dwarfs after our flag.

Alternatively, we could follow the same idea with a slight change. Leave the hunters and legion in the forest area and have the light dwarves actively advance towards the hill. I'd hazard that the enemy will use his Lacertan advantage in the swamps so when he advances them, have our forces in the swamp engage them and have the light dwarves switch back to flank them.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:23 No.12237529
    >>12237435
this seems to implicate that if the lizards dont move through the swamp too cool off then they'll become overheated or something, but then the enemy might expect us to think that so he'll force them to go the OTHER way, but then the lizards might collapse or something so he might be forced to the swamp anyway. therefore, we need to brush up on our swamp-fighting skills.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:31 No.12237602
No one else has any ideas or critiques? To be fair, it's a little hard to make a solid strategy without knowing more about the units we have and he has but yeah. If he's on the hill, we should reduce the advantage of his archers by using the forest and peppering him with arrows as he advances. Hence why I suggested we move our flag in there.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 09/27/10(Mon)00:35 No.12237639
so, deploy in chainmail with all weapons and circleshield, moving flag to the forest. Archers as inner ring, protected by Legionary BAtallion, and light dorfs doing... something.

    >normally, yes you need to keep lacertans heat regulated in combat, but since these guys are all in for the death sentence anyways...

    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:39 No.12237673
    >>12237639
I suggest the light dorfs action will change based on the situation. If our opponent splits his forces, I suggest we engage with the legionary unit after the archers have peppered them as they move forward. Then the light dorfs flank and we try to wipe them out quickly and move on to the next.

If he goes an all out attack, plant our legionary unit on the flag and have which ever unit is better at it - the light dorfs or archers - to push past their lines and grab the flag while the remaining unit defends with the legionary unit.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:40 No.12237679
    >>12237673
Also, the reason I suggested we go out in light gear is because we'll join the light dorfs/hunters based on the situation. The Legionary unit should be fine on their own without us needing to lead them.

I like the idea of putting the light dorfs in an ambush position for when he inevitably attacks our flag.
    >> Anonymous 09/27/10(Mon)00:42 No.12237695
    >>12237680
The only reason I suggest against that is because the melee units our foe picked are heavy units. Berserkers and dorf warlords. The light infantry might have an initial advantage but they'd get ripped in short order. That's why I think they're better used as a flanking/assaulting unit on the flag if the heavy troops move to engage us.

A signal Flare fires from the observation tower, and the battle begins. You see a gleaming block of infantry advancing down your right flank, and a massive mob of warriors down your left, not a glint of armor or metal amongst it, although the sun does occaisionally glint on the great obsidian blades wielded by the Berserkers. you can see no sign of the Stalkers, but you cant see the flag clearly either.

Alright, Legion hold, hunters begin picking them off as they come into range starting with the berserkers as I assume they are the most lightly armored and will die faster, and dorfs loop around through the forest to hit the units guarding the flag once the other two are too far away to help.

Move towards the forest with us leading the light dorfs for now. Place the flag in the upper left part of the forest and have the legionary unit wait outside the undergrowth. Have the light dorfs guarding the flag for now and have the hunters act as skirmishers harassing the berserkers with arrow fire as they advance. I imagine the arrows would be more effective against them than the armoured dorfs.

Urgh. That hampers things. Leave the flag where it is then and have the Legion defend. Hunters go near the swamp and pepper the berserkers with arrows and have the light dorfs support them if their final unit appears from the swamps. We have no idea where their flag is nor do we know where their final unit is. Best play it defensive for now.

Have some of the hunters scout out the forest and swamp and try to get a bead on their remaining unit. The rest of the hunters should become skirmishers and focus on the berserkers. Have the legionary unit prep themselves to hold the line at the flag. Finally, split the light dorfs into two groups. One will support the hunters in the event someone actually gets up to them and the second we will lead into battle at opportune moments. Such as flanking the berserkers if they go off the handle and rush the hunters as they get peppered.

I'm assuming the warlord dorfs are slow as hell so we should try to bait the berserkers into an engagement that will wipe them out or severely hurt them.

I'm both of those, although I suppose it's hard to tell without me having a name, so go with the second one I suggested. The second one is basically just an extension of the first now that I know we can send out scouts.

To clarify my second plan, the group of light dorfs that are covering the hunters should be covering the hunters that aren't scouting and are still shooting at the approaching berserkers. Hopefully we can cause them to charge even faster with this annoyance and cut them down. I'd also like to make an addition to what I posted earlier - if the berserkers DO charge forward, can we have the legionary unit march to meet them if the warlord dorfs are still far back? If not, only a portion of them should march forward to meet them.

It's the only way I can see beating them at this point. We need to find where their final unit is and take out one of their heavy units ASAP. Both of them hitting us at the same time will be too difficult to take, especially with their third unit around. Our light dorfs cannot take them in up front combat so splitting them up only gives us more options on the battlefield since I intend to only use them in flanking movements at this point.

here. I agree with you on everything but splitting up the hunters and dorfs. I'll give you the hunters because it would be useful to know where the stalkers and flag are. But, seeing as the hunters are the fastest thing on the field in forest putting the dorfs with them will just slow them down.

I didn't mean the dorfs to go with them in the forest. The scouts can go on their own. I want them to support the leftover hunters that will be skirmishing in the field against the berserkers. I'm assuming breaking up the hunters into scouts won't eliminate them since we only need a bunch of scouts in each direction and I'm assuming these units are rather large.

Wikipedia says a battalion is anywhere between 300 and 1300 men. And I'm guessing you're saying to use the dorfs as a screen to keep the hunters from getting charged? That would work if we can draw out the berserkers and hit them with the legion after the hunters wear them down. Which, given that they're called BERSERKERS shouldn't be a problem. Alright, lets do it.

Two groups of 5 hunters sprint off from the main group, one to the swamp, one to the forest. The remaining 50 advance as quickly as their leading guarding unit of 50 light Dwarves will allow. You lead the other 50 Dwarves down the middle of the field, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

After a few minutes of marching you hear screams coming from the swamp. Off to your right you see the hunters backpedaling rapidly, the screening dwarves doing their best to buy the hunters enough time to get a few more volleys off. The Massive Obsidian Blades never managing to fell more than one dwarf with their mighty swings, overcoming the skill of the stout warriors with sheer brute force

Hmm. I had hoped some of the legionary units would of split off like the later post suggested but that's too late now. I do suggest we call them up now though to engage the berserkers.

Regardless, get the hunters and light dorfs engaging the berserkers to do a full out retreat, with the hunters not shooting anymore. I doubt the berserkers will stop charging and follow them. At that point we hit them in the rear and have the retreating light dorfs hold their ground and the hunters pour arrows into the berserkers. Hopefully the legionary troops can meet up with us and hit their flank at that point.

I did see that coming as well but I didn't want to risk out opponent being tricky and putting them in the forest. It's what I would of done if we had them tbh. Plus it made sense based on his deployment. He has his own archers screening his weakest troops and we can't attack them without putting ourselves at huge risk since those berserkers would be even better in the swamp.

You signal to the Auxiliary and hunters to fall back fully, and for the legionary unit to advance for a flank charge. The Dwarven Auxiliary duck one more time as the Hunters unload a final volley into the Berserkers before breaking into a more hurried retreat.

As soon as the berserkers pass your unit, their blood lust giving them a rather serious case of tunnel vision you signal your unit to charge their rear. Just before you make contact with the Berserkers you notice two things, first that it will be a few minutes before the flank element of this charge arrives (and that only 50 of the 200 men in the legionary unit stayed behind to guard the flag) and second, that the Stalkers intercepted the hunters at the cusp of the valley. While the hunters appear to have been brought down to nearly half strength by the opening throwing axe volley; it seems the agile, long-knife wielding humans are much to slippery for the larger slower Lacerta, and although outnumbered nearly three to one they seem to be holding there own.

    >What weapon are you wielding at the moment, spear or sword, also, roll 1d100 for how well you fight.

I will hopefully be back soon but if things go on without me, reinforce the hunters if it looks like things are going bad. The dorf units are still a bit away so we have a bit more time to focus on the berserkers and stalkers. If we can wipe out one and hurt the other, we should last long enough for our hunters in the forest to hopefully find their flag. Of course, change things as according to the situation but that's what I recommend at this point.

You charge into the mass of Saurian flesh, a quick thrust of your shortspear going through the neck of one brute, you quickly withdraw it and wheel it over your head, onehanded, gashing several Berserkers backs before you plunge it into another ones neck, or you try to. The spear lodges itself in the brutes shoulder, it wheels around, and smashes its obsidian greatsword into you raised shield, cleaving the shield in twain, buying you the time to dodge and draw your shortsword.

As both halves of the Dwarven formation advance towards each other, you notice several things hapening around you at once. First, the berserkers are begining to route, spare about 30 that remain to fight about 34 run out the flank towards the swamp, while the other 20ish berserkers flee towards the wheeling Legionary unit. A shout behind you draws your attention to the Warlords, whose speed has doubled, the armored Dwarves hurling themselves towards the Awkwardly positioned Legionnaires.

The Hunters are still doing quite well against the Stalkers, however there simply arent enough left to defeat the Lacertan Ambushers after the axe salvo.

    >Roll1d100 to finish off the berserker still heading after you, you will also need a roll to order any of your units as they are all either fighting, a decent distance away, and you are currently fighting as well. low is good

Order the light dorfs not under our command to augment the hunters, while we'll chase after the berserkers that went after the legionary unit. I say have them try to wheel to meet the oncoming warlords rather than worry about the 20 berserkers. They'll do a crap ton of damage but I think the warlords would be worse if they hit them in the flank.

That's commanding 2 units not counting ourselves so that should be 3d100s.

You dodge another of the berserkers blows, and easily lop his head off, before shouting "A Detatchment, move to reinforce the Hunters, Legionaieres, wheel and set formation NOW!! Dwarves with me, lets finish these bastards off!!!"

The Dwarves following you seem eager to finish the butchers work... in fact the whole unit does, as the entire Light Auxiliary unit continues slaughtering the broken berserkers.

Your legionary battalion manages to re-wheel before the Warlords hit them, but the front rank doesnt have time to properly set their position, and only the second rank has time to drop its spears into position. Cracks are already forming in the phalanx.

    >orders
    >only about 15 Berserkers left engage-able, the rest have ran off to try their luck with the guards at the borders of the field, fearing you more than the crossbow-wielding executioners than the clearly demonic dwarves they face
The Hunters continue to fight, although there arent more than 5 left, to the 20 or so Lacertans surrounding them like hungry dogs. The leader of the Hunters doesnt even have her bow across her back anymore, although it is obvious that it was snapped by an errant swing rather than discarded, she seems to have picked up a second longknife, and is the clearly the only reason the rest of her unit hasn't routed.

Get those dofs in to relieve the hunters ASAP. They should be able to turn the tides once they arrive, which shouldn't take too long. That woman deserves her life after taking on as many as she did so those dorfs better damn well save her. We can finish off the left over berserkers and then flank the warlords. Would it be possible for the front line of the phalanx to hold the line while the rest of the formation move back a bit and reforms the formation? We'd lose a portion of it but if the phalanx cracks, we'd definitely lose a lot more.

the dwarves you are not directly leading laugh as they finish off the remaining berserkers, before charging into the side of the warlords... only to be caught by the other graduate, clad in Crimson scale-mail, wielding a battleaxe, with a steel kite shield strapped to his arm, he more or less stops the charge on his own.

The legionaires are already reforming, the last 50 men moving as fast as they can to join the rest of the unit. The front rank is now fighting with tower-shields and longblades, while the back two ranks are re-forming and advancing to relieve the front rank. The numerical superiority the Legionaries held is quickly being equalized, but once the unit is fighting in formation again they should have the upper hand.

You still have tight control over the unit you were leading, and they are re-forming around you, waiting for orders.

The captain of the hunters and two others still hold the stalkers at bay, but barely, the 12 Lacertans are slowly closing the circle around the embattled hunters

Hopefully they can shoot off a few arrows if we can save them. If it looks like the graduate is going to grab the flag on his own, send some of the dorfs with us to protect the flag. Otherwise the hunters will have that job once we save them as they sit back and shoot.

Any dorfs that didn't listen to us that survived are to be executed as well. Discipline is key in war and they lack it. God, I hope those scouts in the forest win this for us.

"You bastards are splitting, I want 6 of you to sprint in to bail out the hunters at the tip of the valley, the rest of you hit that flank, I'll take the commander, you bastards hit the warlords." they all nod and run off to finish the tasks you set them to. The last rank of Legionaires hits the formation as the new front rank overlaps the 10 survivors of the original front rank. And that is all the more you have time to observe, as you find yourself in singles combat with the one man on the field you _aren't_ allowed to kill, you vaguely notice the rest of the light auxiliary rushing past you into the flank of the warlords.

with a smirk on his face the man opposite you says "let us dance then, Justinian" raising his battleaxe over his head.

Cassius charges you, bringing his axe around in a viscious arc. You catch the mighty blow an your blade, but there is too much power bihind it, your blade is knocked from your hands and you are hurled to the ground. You roll away from a stomp, and feel your hand touch a hilt. Not caring what it is you bring the blade around to deflect a downward sweep aimed at your sword arm. Realizing it was a battle-pick you picked up, you slide the hilts together until the pick catches on the base of the axe. With a mighty heave you use the extended axe to lever yourself up. the unexpected force tearing the weapon from your oponents hands. Your chest smashes into his as you finally reach your feat, both of you are winded by the hard impact. You swing you arm back down, smashing the pick into Casius' thigh, and sending him sprawling to the ground, hands clutching his leg.

As arrows from the scouting party of Hunters begin to steak into the Dwarven Warlords, the other teams flag at the front of the group you pick up your longblade and level it at Cassius "Yield" you command as the surviving Warlords begin to drop to their knees, placing their hands behind their heads.

"I yield" Cassius croaks out. Only a few of your men cheer, they must have battles left yet. The captain of the Hunters is stalking towards you, her shoulder-length black hair matted with blood and sweat, though there is a pleased smirk on her face.

A second flare goes off, signaling the end of the battle. You will be expected to proceed immediately to the foot of the observation tower. You know that you will receive your marks, but what else is done at the foot of the tower is a guarded secret among the Commanders of the Emperors Legions.

Begrudgingly Cassius pulls the shield from his arm and tosses it at you. It thunks off of your shinguard, and you stoop to pick it up. As you head towards the northern bend of the swamp, to go around the putrid puddle rather than through it before presenting yourself to your superior officers. As you pass the Captain of the hunters she eyes you appraisingly, you suddenly realize that you are a good 10 years younger than most of the students at the officers academy (but that will hapen when your military career started at age 15, and you served as Second to one of the greatest Generals in the Empires history during his last years of service). "You fought well today" you tell her "Wait for me at the edge of the camps, I will meet you after my review."

Upon reaching the foot of the tower, the first thing you notice is how well dressed these men are, compared to you in your dirty, battered old chainmail. "You did very well today, Commander Justinian" Says a tall, aged man in crimson robes with black trim says to you. You salute in as a response, not sure what to say. He continues "We have decided to give you command of a full Maniple, and assign you to my personal command. I will expect to meet you tomorrow morning, you will then select the composition of both Regiments for the maniple, and I will brief you on a mission vital to the Empires... internal integrity. Something I'm sure you understand is important with the Uurlanthian Kingdom once again testing our holdings in the fertile Kasharn valley."

Another man steps forward, this man you recognize, Lord Commander Byrish Gael, you mentor. "And now Justinian, for the matter of tradition. First, drink this" He hands you a skin, upon drinking it you realize it is a spirit of exquisite quality. One of the other men hands you a signet ring, and a third hands you a slip of paper "The ring will be your seal, and true badge of office, the skin is a fine Dwarven Cave Whiskey, no you cant know which merchant we bought it from or if its from the Imperial Dwarves, Surfacers or the Dwemer Duchy. And on the sheet of paper you will find the names of all of the soldiers pardoned this battle. The combatants are frequently bankrupt, and can never become a full citizen. Since it is common for Commanders to acquire a retinue, you will be allowed to give these souls a second attempt to serve honorably. You are dismissed Commander." You walk away, wineskin in one hand, list in the other. You realize that most of the survivors were captains, mostly from units that were decimated. The only one that you know is still alive is Sansa Kyrosh, captain of the Hunter batallion. thoughtfully you make your way to the edge of the soldiers camp.
