    Previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/12180900/

In the last thread, we discussed the idea of creating a horror themed sci-fi game focused on a single ship that has found itself wrapped up in a load of temporal mind fuckery.

A schizophrenic janitor that is a temporal artifact. An AI that slowly gains emotion to the point of developing a strange obsessed crush on one of the PCs. Hallways that are longer than the entire length of the ship.

When we left off, we were discussing the crew compliment of the ship.
    >> Anonymous 09/23/10(Thu)00:10 No.12189164
    Crew compliment

Hollis: Recovering alcoholic. Had a wife and kids but has been divorced for a while due to his drinking problems. Hope especially takes a liking to him.

Applegate: Jack's younger cousin. Engaged to a deep space miner who has been on a job longer than usual.

Jane: In a relationship with Jack. Lost her parents when she was young so she has the problem on relying on others too much for emotional support.

Jack: Has been cheating on Jane what another woman prior to the mission. Pretends not to give a fuck but this comes back to personally haunt him.

Hank: Hank is still the soldier turned Buddhist, doesn't want to take a life if he can do something that would save it, etc etc. Develops a crush on the A.I., which though stern, has displayed a desire to keep them safe. However, the A.I. prefers Hollis. At first, he wants to kill Hollis. Not truly being able to reconcile his spirituality with his feelings, he throws himself into any work he can, and writes down elaborate plans to kill Hollis. Anything to keep himself busy.

    Can we concentrate on Jack?

He's motife is "not giving a fuck," and laziness.

How does he react to the fuckry of the ship?

If not, I suggest Morning Sun for the ship, and Sally for the A.I.

Jane is a tech-savvy woman, who, unusually for a spacer, wears her hair long. Due to reasons she'd rather not talk about, she has a tendency to freeze up in times of danger.

    Applegate.

Seemingly young, very impulsive, and flighty. Easily surprised, A.I. rights activist. Believes the inhibitors preventing A.I. from developing true personality are as immoral as crippling a child at birth. Approached by Jack as a potential "partner" but only thinks of him as a friend. Has not told Jane of this development.

He should be extremely skeptical of the supernatural events going on almost to the point that he's a more relaxed male Agent Scully. It's not that he thinks what's going on isn't happening, it's just that he rationalizes it as a series of malfunctions and the crew being fatigued. Ship appearing bigger/smaller than the schematics say? That just means their PDAs are fucked up. AI starts calling people "sweetie" or "honey"? Probably a weird bug or a program made by some ronery computer techs. Staring corpse? Shit, that's a pretty scary coincidence they'll all laugh about in the bar. So when the ship starts fucking with them he's the one who takes it in stride.

However, things are different when he's dealing with people. He really doesn't like the Janitor at and thinks he a hand in this mess. He's also the first to suspect that something's very wrong with Hank and tries to keep an eye on him as much as possible or keep him away from Hollis. Finally, he's also seriously freaked out by the Kill Team and instinctively runs and hides whenever they're in the vicinity, having a gut feeling that the things they'll do to him and his friends make the ship look like the Haunted Mansion ride.

TL:DR: Jack's personality is "and not a single fuck was given that day" combined with "Hell is other people".

Hollis wasn't a spacer by choice, you know. After the warp gate incident, the economy tanked hard, and he had to leave his nominally plushy job in terraforming. Now's he picked up salvaging space wrecks to cover the bill. The change of pace has been okay, but one of the thing he misses is his cigarettes. Lighting up is a dangerous habit in the highly oxygenated environments most spacers work in, but the cravings hit him hard some days. He still reaches for his pack when he's nervous.
For the most part, he doesn't know how to feel about bringing Applegate along with them- they need a new pilot, yeah, but the kid's family and green as hell. The last thing he wants is for her to end up heart by this, though don't expect him to vocalize any of these thoughts.
Most of the time he's gruff and sarcastic around his teammates

I'd say that Jane is very serious. Put off by Applegate's liberal arts faggotry. Where Applegate goes on about philosophy and human rights, Jane is comparatively cold and scientific. She looks down on Hank for his spirituality.

She has a casual sexual relationship with Jack, that amounts to little more than "It's better than masturbating".

She's a bit of a loner and enjoys "alternative" forms of media. Favorite TV show is Carnage Nun Migumi.

Jane was in IT before the big crash- disabling dangerous or corroded AI programs and rebuilding them. She's got on to Hollis' rig because of Jack- Hollis wouldn't accept him on the crew unless he brought someone of actual value and Jane honestly had nothing better to do then programing cyber-stalker-viruses for ad-corps. By nature, a loner, someone who spends a lot of her time sunk into thought, she may seem distant and cold to others. However, she has a certain joy d'vivre- appreciaitng the more simple pleasures in life. Good food, good sex, and good friends.
She hasn't had one of those three since this mission started.
Also, her hair is getting matted after all this time in her suit and she's starting to get pissy.

Jane's been screwed over in general. She lost her parents to a freak firestorm when she was only a kid and spent the rest of her childhood being passed around different foster homes, never being able to relate or connect to her ever changing surroundings. Overtime she developed little quirks like growing her hair out much longer than normal and preferring to listen to old-timey music like the Ink Spots and Henry Hall as opposed to any contemporary music.

She became interested in computers once she entered highschool and quickly became a natural. For some reason Jane felt she could understand a computer better than people: computer were completely methodical, reliable, and nonjudgmental. The problem was that once the gate crashed the planet's economy immediately shifted away from high tech industries to conventional labor as a means to survive, leaving her skills almost irrelevant and giving her no choice but to become a spacer.

    Applegate is optimistic, and idealistic.
She was just finishing up college when the gate crashed occurred- majored in English with a minor in artificial psychology. Of course, what with the great retraction the market was pretty much bare bones for liberal arts based career, she didn't get a chance to ever really put that to use. She kicked around a lot, joined political organizations and activist groups, joined a commune- her parents finally put their foot down, however, and are making her take up an actual job related skills.
She's spent the last year completing piloting courses online while doing odd jobs, and jumped at the chance to join up with her Uncle's crew when Hollis' old pilot finally retired.
She has a great love for old movies, 22nd century stuff from back when the first permanent off world colonies were established- filled with hope and good feelings.
She's taken to whistling "daisy daisy," under her breath- originally she was just doing it ironically to piss off Jane, but now she just does it whenever she's not thinking.
It's a catchy tune- what can you say?
    Applegate is gay.

Hm, I like those ideas. Let me elaborate on those and how I would interpret them.
~MAYBE a shoulder mounted light, it's a logical place to put them because it's out of your hand and not easily obstructed. I was thinking of making a gauntlet sort of thing that mounted tools and lights and a small screen and keypad, shit would be so septims.
~Oxi-tanks, I was thinking on the hips or small of the back. Also thinking of incorporating a cycling unit I've been designing for a time.
~Personalization is one of my favorite things! Something is not mine until I mess with it somehow. Just give me some details about characters and I can start compiling features for their suits. On the broader scale I was thinking of strips of velcro or a series of buttons in specific places on the undersuits that one could place variable sizes of pouches and placard holders and whatnot. Your suit can be your tool kit, but you can also use an actual tool belt.
~Ports like that can go all over the hand and body, perhaps a character could have had a surgery to replace a finger with a wireless port or specially designed port, fun stuff like that.
~Characters with glasses could have their HUDs there, or one of those small over-one-eye-pieces with a HUD built in.

heh I didn't think of that before. That would be really awesome to incorporate.

There should also be a character-establishing moment to show that the Kill Team are not their friends. What I'm thinking is to have the crew run into them while investigating the ship. They're taken aback by the uncanny valley appearance of the soldiers, but still think that they are backup and try to talk to them. At that point the soldiers immediately aim their rifles and fire on the crew. The entire crew is immediately killed save for Jack or Applegate, who are mortally wounded (of the "OH GOD MY ARM AND SHOULDER ARE MISSING") and live just long enough to witness the attack silently walk up, stare, and finish him/her off point blank.

Applegate/Jack then wakes up. Everyone is alive and well but Jack/Applegate is shaken up about what just happened. Shortly thereafter, while walking down a corridor they find scorch marks, blood splatters, and the Kill Team in the distance walking away.

Love this shit SO MUCH! Gonna be a blast drawing it.

I was thinking originally that part of the uniform be familiar to the characters, in the way that most people know what soldiers of their own nation look like, but the 'unit patch' or whatever is intentionally left blank, and this is somehow significant, as in unusual or through some horror story about units that tore off their insignia and then slaughtered worlds or something.

For extra gear storage, I'm thinking a lot would go off the belt and thighs, and the light combat suits will have some very thin type of armor pads built into parts of the cloth-suit. Is this all well and good, everyone?

That could work, but it can't be too overt. The idea is that the Kill Team's origins are completely unknown to the crew and that they look significantly different from anything even Hank has encountered. Having ranks displayed on the chest like ACUs would work well, but you're the bro drawing it so whatever you think will look bitchin' and militaristic while sticking to the general idea will work fine.

I'm hoping that with Isaac's HORRIFIC TRAUMA that they'll be able to make him hallucinate, and correct the problem Dead Space 1 had; where at a certain point in the game, you'd seen everything and new how to kill it, and they abandoned atmosphere for GO GO GO THE END OF THE GAME IS COMING GO DO SHIT

Hopefully in DS2 he'll hallucinate and shit, see and hear things that aren't there, and help put a bigger focus on atmosphere.

The idea I had was a thumb-sized round with a pre-loaded bit of foaming glue at the end, which would help it adhere to targets by jetting it out after impact. If it hit a suit, the glue/foam would make a seal behind it. Mixed in with the glue/foam would be some kind of heavy-duty narcotic, to make it doubly effective without increasing its size/weight/dimensions.

I think we agreed on a combination of the UNSC Frigates, Warp Nacelle-style thingamajiggers, and massive rings rotating around this trunk. Rings are crew quarters, gravity from rotation. Inner Trunk is where actual work is done, magnetic boots are a must. Innards are utilitarian, wires everywhere, etc, with startling discrepancies in certain rooms. A hallway might be grungy, dirty, horror-esque, but behind the sliding doors are tasteful little rooms with hardwood floors and the smell of flowers.

For the exploration-test ship, i'd see something totally different, a several kilometers-long fullerene hi-tech needle with a complicated contraption in the middle for the Device. As it hit the hyperspace gate ten years ago it could looks damaged at some places, or, more disturbing, absolutely not damaged.

Have an NPC crewman that's nice, polite, and always eager to help. Get the players to depend on him/her. OOC, let them assume that he's your cover against mistake, as in if you screw up (no way out, need more people to finish puzzle, etc) he's the dues ex machina embedded in the story line. Them have him/her randomly become a knife wielding psychopath. Make sure that they only go after one player at a time, and always when that player is alone. When questioned by other players, he/she seems perfectly normal, and has no memory of the event.

empty spacesuits move on their own. Small movements that only happen when it is nearby but only visible out of the corner of the eye and then nothing when it is investigated. Or at a distance visible through a porthole, walking in a sluggish unnatural manner across the hull.

Excellent work. If that's an original design, I think the only thing left to do for the ship design is actual scale, and the coloring.

For scale, this thing needs to be BEYOND big. Proposal-The struts supporting the rings are the size of skyscrapers.

Plus, its going to be a problem to maintain that level of surface area, what with random paint scratches, repairs and additional pylons added on for expansion.

Unfortunately no, that's not my work, i just browsed my spacships collection. I was looking for something more in line with the proposal above of a kilometers-long black hi-tech needle, but i have nothing that specific.

So what kind of scale then? We need it big enough to have a large amount of area to leave blank even with a full campaign.

Or do we want to have it small enough that they'll become familiar with the layout, then when it starts to fuck with them they can't trust their memories?

"Well...yeah, that's what the blueprints say. Hey Jane, these blueprints are supposed to be sound, right?"

"They've been checked and double checked, these are the blueprints."

"Well, we measured on foot. 10 Kloms at the least before we ran out of steam."

    "Could you repeat that?"

"We're ten kloms in, measuring from the prow."

"There must be something wrong with your measurements, scanners confirm the blueprints. 4 kloms. Could you broadcast location, for a few seconds?"

"Has to be a mixup. Hey, it's on, you reading this?"

    "Well, somethings wrong."

    "What?"

"Your signal isn't coming from inside the ship."

    "What?"

"Your signal. The coordinates your broadcasting are approximately 6 Kloms out in space from aft, and then 3 Kloms down."

As part of the time dickery, one could have the PCs take some significant but non-fatal damage when the freaky shit starts to happen. "Your body feels hot - very hot. You can smell the burning of flesh, and, more importantly, you can feel it as well. You collapse down on the ground, clawing at your body as horrific burn marks form on your body."

Later on, when said character is exploring around, have an accident happen. There's a leak, the player accidentally causes a spark and is engulfed in flame... causing the wound to heal itself.

Other players may not be so lucky, and damage they receive is simply added to what they took earlier.

you have two options, make it small enough to make the PC freak out because the cause of all that nightmare can't be further than a dozen meter, or so gigantic that you can doubt that this ship was made by human beings, and that all the horror you may encounter is just a glimpse of what the shadows may hide.

Traveller is an excellent system. Fun character generation (your characters don't start as fresh green adventurers or whatever your common trope is - you roll to see what their life was like before they became Travellers). The system itself is 2d6 based, with 8 being the target number. It's a nice bell curve system. Lots of support for noncombat stuff, skills are considered very important. No levels or classes. Fairly lethal combat - your average character will be disabled in two pistol shots if unarmored, and killed in three.

    Probably my favorite system overall.

The rings themselves should be about maybe a kilom in circumference? Does that sound right?
Also- does the crew know the nature of the ship when they salvage it, that it was the first FTL ship that also caused the gate disaster ten years ago?

    Sure he's blind.
But this is a relatively hi-tech setting, seeing as the ship they're investigating was doing shit with FTL travel.

Simple, he has Bionic eyes, a replacement he felt was more worth for his money then biological replacements. He has a genetic disorder in fact, that slowly destroys corneal nerves, which is why he NEEDS to use Bionic eyes. Plus side is, he can put down button cameras that he can see through.

The ship pretty much doesn't like him, so (Starts slow at beginning, get's worse over time) his eye's start to malfunction. Primarily with distances, and where things are.

He checks Cam-3b, which he placed in the cafeteria? For some reason he see's people in there, but Hollis is in there too and he doesn't see shit. He looks through a dark hallway, and his infrared/nightvision/whathave you just doesn't work, while everyone else just has their eye's adapt like they normally do to low light.

The Ship Doesn't Like him, because where we're going, he shouldn't need eyes to see.

John Mikaiah, of unknown descent. A bit of a kidder, always trying to get around the inherent disturbance his artificial eyes caused. Being relatively poor (Family to support) he couldn't afford ones that looked like real eyes, so instead massive round orbs bigger then his eye sockets that glow blue, with wiring under the skin. Could have looked nice for the ladies, but Nana needs an operation, and the kids (Not his, Sisters) need food. Though a clown, he becomes very stern when facing his job and passion. Cooking. He's always loved cooking, for both the artful meals he can create, and the usefulness of how to make almost anything edible.

    How does he die anons?

you can have some other features, like he can't really see but have perception of its environment through radar, ladar, sonar, shitload of different tools, linked to its brain's sense of touch area, as his vision area is irreparrably damaged. Thus he has an excellent perception of its environment, but he's kinda autistic as he has absolutely no instinctive understanding of facial expressions.

Make one of his eye a black dodecaedron with no eyelid, the other one a glistening sphere, and everyone who looks at these tools feels very uncomfortable.

I feel like an asshole contributing to this, like a quest-thread guy popping and answering his own question.

    But eeeengh.

Alright, so most of the MINDFUCKS we have are based more on messing with senses and perception, right? Very few of them have been stuff like people cut into pieces impossibly neatly, corpses with no marks on the body but completely drained of blood, a man hanging himself with his own intestines, etc. So, killing him with his own senses would most likely be the best.

    So, ideas I have.

Eyes give him a false view, such as opening what he thinks to be the door to his room, but it's actually a door to an area recently hit by debris, still in a state of vacuum. When the corpse is discovered, no one can think of how he got in, door is gone and the airlocks/shutters used to block of that section are still up.

    Bump for nighttime/euro /tg/

Everything is turning out awesome so far. I'm in the process of making a recap to help other fi/tg/uys contribute without having to slog through the archives.

Also, I've been playing System Shock 2 to help me get more ideas for the project. Granted, SHODAN and The Many are the polar opposite of what we're going for, but they are some features in the game we can perhaps elaborate on.

For instance, there's the part at the ending cutscene when SHODAN takes over a human crewmember's body. Perhaps we can have a moment where Sally materializes out of a terminal or from the remains of a hapless corpse in front of Hank and they proceed to embrace and kiss. Better yet, Sally's corpse somehow leaves the airlock and catches up with Hank regardless of where he's at. Hank is the only member of the entire crew that experiences this and Sally never brings it up, so it's completely unknown whether she has the means to take a physical form, its part of the fluxes in time and space, or just part of Hank's decaying psyche and love for the AI.

Have the AI carry on one sided conversations with the dead crew members, throw in some "I'm sorry lieutenant, that violates safety protocols" and "Unable to comply, that request is against regulation 36" . Realize that either the dead crew members are trying to convince the computer to kill the PCs or the AI is trying to convince itself to kill them.

One of the players got the bridge when an npc is doing a spacewalk, a warning from the computer alerts that the npcs suit pressure has dropped to near vacuum, and heart rate stopped suddenly. After a while there is a respons on the radio, a strange crunching sound and then an unknown voice "I am back at the airlock, let me in".

Or maybe you can have one of your players get attacked by an empty spacesuit or something.

Well I can understand his concerns, our characters are very much a kind of archetype you see in this sort of setting. The drunk, the mechanic, the eager newbie, etc.

But perhaps that's what will make this setting work better? With a solid (albeit well known) type of character for foundations, we could do quite a lot around them.

I do see that good stuff could be done with it that was really just my instant reaction.

Compared to something like Pandorum, which started off with 2 guys with amnesia, and 2 slightly messed up survivors, then developed it into some really cool stuff.

I think the couple is the worst one though, I mean this is supposed to be a semi-military highly professional team, men and women can work together without some of them hooking up.

Take the crew in Event Horizon. There was no need for a couple it had more than enough there, the Captain haunted by his past actions, the Rookie, the Scientist haunted by his wifes suicide, the Mother missing her child...etc...without putting some contrived love story/sacrifice for love thing in.

Yeah the AI getting protective or maybe going as far as love, was a nice idea, it was the "lovers" within the crew that I was a bit unsure about.

    >>12213146
There was a bit of talk about that yeah. How it would work as a book or tv show type thing because there were so many ideas people didn't think it would all fit into one RPG setting.

I think the extra background can be interesting but for the most part the story/setting should be about the characters natural reactions to the utterly crazy situation. While at times things might tie into their past or character traits/flaws (ala Event Horizon) the actual trait should be secondary to the warped/nightmare version of it they are being subjected to.
    >> Anonymous 09/24/10(Fri)22:57 No.12213579
    >>12213460
Yeah- though to do that we'd need to work out more of a background for the planet these guys are coming from and the effects the warp gate incident had on it.
Also- I think Hollis trying to reciprocate the feelings the AI has, only to get shot down, is hilarious. I mean- how many times have we seen AI try to force affections on unwilling people and then go crazy when they don't love them back? Here's the inverse- someone falls for an affectionate AI, only to find that the AI is in love, just not with him

Yeah, that's a pretty good analogy. Though our guy is a lot more unstable then Jet- rather than being what keeps the group together, he's got a whole lot of his own problems to deal with.
