    *twang* *THUNK*

The Dark Sun makes the dawn’s light a harsh rust red, melding with the waning night’s shadows to form bloody clots on the sand of the Gladiator School.

    *twang* *THUNK*

A few men huddle in a pile, shivering with cold on the sandy ground, trying to preserve their body heat. These men, these slaves, were the losers of the daily sparrings Tordek ordered between the gladiatorial slaves, and the punishment for their weakness is to sleep exposed to the elements of night. In Athas, the weak perish and the strong survive.

For those training to be gladiators, that goes doubly so.

    *twang* *SCREECH*

Geb, your half-elfen taskmaster, removes his blindfold and drops his bone bow with satisfaction. A small lizard, but with a jaw filled with needle like teeth that takes up twice of its body, wriggles on the wall weakly, a barbed bone arrow impaling it fully. Geb turns to Tordek, his weather-beaten face steaming with sweat at this early hour. ‘I know I’ll never been a psion,’ Geb says, ‘but if I focus on a target long enough, I can feel its life beating up to about thirty feet away, even while blindfolded.’

‘Looks like we earned a nice sum of ceramic pieces yesterday,’ Geb says, ‘I could go over the slaves and gladiator’s training with you today, or the gladiators will be ready to head off to the arena in a couple hours. Or you could try your luck at the slave markets. We have enough to buy one more blooded gladiator.'

You are Tordek, an aging veteran Mul gladiator. You won your freedom in the arena. Now you now train others to fight and spill blood for gold and the delight of the crowd.

    What is your choice?

    Tordek, Character Sheet
    Tordek, the Veteran Gladiator

    Advantages:
    > Fame – you are a minor celebrity in Raam. Some of the young templars that bet on you (and against you) remember you now they are approaching their middle age. Kids still sometimes play ‘Tordek and the Giant’ in the streets. You hardly ever have to buy your own drinks.

    > Freeman – you are the master of your own destiny. You can move from city to city and own slaves.

    > Veteran’s Eye – You can identify fighting styles fairly quickly and design tactics to counter foreign styles. In addition you have an instinct for telling when a slave has that survival spark or an opponent is going to be trouble.
    >1d100 roll

    > Trainer – you can train your recruits in all standard and military weapon types. Also you can train your recruits in the Exotic proficiencies you know.

    Exotic Specialties
    ---------------------
    > Cahulaks
    > Giant Fighting
    >Hoplomachus
    > Dual punching daggers

    > Gladiator – You are just as deadly as the day you stepped out of the arena.

    Disadvantages:

    > Uneducated – you are illiterate and cannot do more than basic sums. Finances are currently beyond you. Untrustworthy souls may take advantage of you.
    > Wound – you have an annoying scar. On the plus side you can tell if it is going to rain.

Let's pass on the slave markets today. Continue on what we have now and work them up, then buy some some beasts of men when we get some real dough.

"Bring the boys out to play, it's time for today's lesson." Stretch, let's go to work.

    >Continue on what we have now and work them up

    How we make money
    >off gladiators

We head out to the arena

    >off criminals/unskilled slaves/wretches

Most people don't have what it takes to become full (leveled) gladiators. Consider the slaves (criminals/unskilled slaves/wretches) to be a cheap short term investment.

Usually it takes 2 weeks of standard training to take a normal slave and get them healthy and robust enough to become a noxii.

Noxii can fight at the arena in the following games:
Chained Pairs – Last pair standing wins
Animal Hunt – Noxii mob vs Pack of Wolves or Single animal (Dire Wolf, or Cave Bear)
Free for all – in which Noxii are released one at a time into the arena. Last one standing wins.

You get 10-15cp per noxii entered in these games from the arena manager. 95% of the time the noxii die.

Based on the current harsh approach to training, where the sparring winners get the beds and the losers have to sleep outside, this has accelerated the time required to convert the slaves to noxii by about 50%.
    >> Anonymous 09/05/10(Sun)04:35 No.11959910
Get the huge criminal and put him on weights training etc. See if we can get him xbawks hueg. Then we have a great novelty item.

Btw the slaves are trained to be noxii automatically by Geb.

Currently there have been no causalities. With the current plan however, this will change.

    Gladiator Training Plan
    ------------------------------------
    Resources:
    >Finances
    301 ceramic pieces (cp)

    Training to be Noxii:
    -------------------------
    >20 wretches
    >8 criminals
    > 2 criminals*
    > 1 unskilled slave *

    *= exceptional slaves
    Trainer: Geb
Training Approach: Workout slaves. Slaves spar each other for the privilege of sleeping inside. 10 will sleep outside upon failure.
Result: Very harsh on health for losers. Reduces time for training completion by 50%
    Days left in training: 7

Status: 7 wretches known to be diseased.
Morale: Low because of harsh training

    Gladiator Training:
    -------------------------

    >Watapon “Unstoppable” Ford, Human Greatsword Fighter
    >Kr'ktt, the erratic Thrikreen Gythka Fighter

    Trainer: Geb
    Training Goals:

    Pick One:
    >General Workout (1/day)
    >Retrain a power (melee source) – requires Tordek
    >Train for specific event (ex Pairs)
    >Train to add a weapon proficiency Tordek knows (may take up to a week)
    >Train in a specific style of fighting Tordek knows
    (may take week or more)

Dear god why do we have diseased slaves?!?!
They are a liability if they infect our healthy stock. Give them all a dagger and have them take on one of the promising slaves. The brute criminal preferably.

Tordek folds his arms and spits on the sand, watching Watapon, the big greatsword wielding gladiator, and the brute criminal circle each other. Both are armed with mahogany clubs. The brute is muscular and large, but not as defined as Watapon. The brute yells and rushes at Watapon, who calmly sidesteps and uses his superior finesse to tire out the criminal before backhanding him and slamming the cudgel against his jaw. While the brute is stunned and sapped of energy, he only drops to his knees and manages to weakly block. Looks like this one will require at least a month of hard one on one training from Tordek to become a novice (lv1) gladiator. He's not very skilled or bright, but he has natural constitution.

Kr'ktt slowly circles the exceptional unskilled slave with his gythka. The slave eyes the kreen warily, brandishing a quarterstaff in both hands. Suddenly a high-pitched inscetoid keening comes from Kr'ktt and he throws the gythka aside and leaps at the man. Striking with his four limbs with claw rakes and what appears to be uppercuts, the man backs away, accepting a bloody slash on the forearm to get the space to block the kreen's three other arms.

Illiene, your mindbender, circles the fighters warily, his eyes on the kreen. However the kreen seems to be 'pulling his punches' and the exceptional slave displays an intelligent techinque and finesse more than brute force. This one may also take a month or 5 weeks to train, and it from Tordek's veteran senses, he might be made into a rogue or intelligence based gladiator (arcane or primal focus) more than a warrior. If you had the trainer for such a thing that is.

We ought to do something about them, but I don't know if that's the answer. If we do go this way, I vote having them fight scarface, if only because I get a better vibe from the brute.

Also, send the diseased slaves into the ring, or sell them for whatever their worth.

No. Tordek can only focus on one training task at a time. Trainers are available, but the cost money. One may cost from 300-500 cp for 6 months.

    >>11960202
At midday the seven diseased wretches are given a meal and then marched in a line in the sand pit. Tordek, Geb, Illiene and Kr'ktt are there. Geb passes out sharp obsidian daggers. A couple of the wretches are too weak from sleeping outside to raise the daggers to their flesh. One of the slaves who has been hacking up bloodly phlegm cuts their veins first before slashing his throat.

One of the wretches has enough fight to feebly strike at Geb, but his arm stops in mid stroke and turns backwards slowly inching towards his throat. The wretch looks at the blade, then Illiene in horror, the mindbender's face a calm mask of concentration as the dagger enters the man's own throat and forces him to expire.

Sure. Kr'ktt peers at the corpses, his multifaceted eyes shining like fabled jewels. Clacking his mandibles, he thrusts one of his claws into the body pile and pulls out...a now severed head.

He shuffles over to Tordek and curiously slams the head against a rock, cracking the skull. Geb and Illiene look at the kreen strangely. Is this its way of offering food to its master?

Before Tordek can respond with a 'Good boy, thats a good boy,' one of the eye lids of the severed head flutter open. Infact the eyeball actually pops out as if pushed out from something within. A beautiful purple iridescent insect inches its way from the ocular cavity and then unfurles a prismatic set of wings. They are stunning and ...the pattern draws Tordek's attention.

With a high-pitched keen the Thrikreen's claws immediately slam down on the creature, blooding it to a pulp.

Tordek has fought Hejkins before and the kreen is a reasonable match for one. One on one they are best fought from range. It can get tricky when there are multiple Hejkins as the mad things can meld with the earth and switch places with their kin.
