    Previous:http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/11764346/

In the world of Athas, brave men challenge the wasteland for survival, and brave men conspire in secret to overthrow the Sorcerer-Kings and their black-cassocked Templars.

But all recognize the bravery of the gladiator, who stares death in the face every day for fame and freedom.

You are Tordek, an aging veteran Mul gladiator. You won your freedom in the arena, and now you chose to make coin with the only skill you know: to train others to fight for the roar of the crowd.

You have made several purchases, including two blooded (Lv2) gladiators.

    >“Unstoppable” Human Greatsword Fighter
    >Kr'ktt, the erratic Thrikreen Gythka Fighter

Currently you are at the Raam main arena in the blistering hot early afternoon. After the purchases at the slave market a couple days ago, your coin purse is very light and clinks with few ceramic pieces.

Time to make money with your new lads.

The Templar approaches Tordek and discusses the matches remaining in the day.

    Matches
    >Practice Match -- Pays 20 cp.
    To unconsciousness
    >Death Match -- Pays 40cp to each gladiator. Winner may get a bonus depending on style
    >Skirmish Tournament -- Pays 20,40,80 or 100 cp depending how long the gladiator lasts.
This consists of three 1v1 fights interrupted by short rests. Deaths are uncommon but do happen
    >Beast Match -- You may ask the Templar what creature along the Road of Kings they have captured for the arena today.

Each gladiator can fight one match this day.
Keep in mind you have payed on average 200 cp for each of your gladiators.

    Reposting Character information

    Tordek, the Mul Veteran Gladiator

    Advantages:
    >Fame – you are a minor celebrity in Raam. Some of the young templars that bet on you (and against you) remember you now they are approaching their middle age. Kids still sometimes play ‘Tordek and the Giant’ in the streets. You hardly ever have to buy your own drinks.

    >Freeman – you are the master of your own destiny. You can move from city to city and own slaves.

    >Veteran’s Eye – You can identify fighting styles fairly quickly and design tactics to counter foreign styles. In addition you have an instinct for telling when a slave has that survival spark or an opponent is going to be trouble.

    >Trainer – you can train your recruits in all standard and military weapon types. Also you can train your recruits in the Exotic proficiencies you know.

    Exotic Specialties
    ---------------------
    Cahulaks
    Giant Fighting
    Hoplomachus
    Dual punching daggers
    >Gladiator – You are just as deadly as the day you stepped out of the arena.

    Disadvantages:

    >Uneducated – you are illiterate and cannot do more than basic sums. Finances are currently beyond you. Untrustworthy souls may take advantage of you.
    >Wound – you have an annoying scar. On the plus side you can tell if it is going to rain. It may flare up at inopportune times.

    YESSS.

I'm interested in entering Unstoppable in the Skirmish Tournament. Also, about asking what creature has been captured.

:3 I has an answer for you.

Sandria is sitting beside you in the box seats dedicated for the gladiator schools. She smooths her hair behind a pointed ear and tells you the following:
"I was sold for such a low price as a punishment. My previous master was Nawab Silar. You may know him as the Master of the South Gate. I was much younger than his primary wife, Nawab Kilana. She always had a eye out for Master Silar's concubines and she accused me of attempting to steal an iron necklace. She wanted me flogged and expelled, but Master Silar was kind and settled for selling me in the slave yards.

    >Unstoppable in the Skirmish Tournament

Confirmed. So the Skirimish Tournament works like this:
There are three opponents, roughly equal to your might.
Between each match the gladiator has a short rest, meaning they can spend one healing surge and recover encounter powers. So choose wisely when you order your gladiator to use their daily.
The gladiator has one action point for the entire match.

    >Beast
Illiene comes back with a fried lizard on a stick and says 'The beast for they have captured for the novice gladiators, thats our boys, is a Sunclaw
Scorpion.' Tordek doesn't recognize the name and furrows his brow. 'Some sort of Scorpion mutated by the rays of the Sun' Illiene shrugs. 'Word it that is it slightly tougher than a normal scorpion. But it may have some nasty mutation we don't know about.'

    >someone roll me 1d20 for a Local Knowledge check regarding Sandria's story. You can roll 2 d20's if you want Illiene to hear it as well.

In Raam, Nawab is the title for 'noble' and most of the noble warlords in the city are for all intents and purposes, the real power in certain sectors of the city. The Templars of the Sorceress-Queen are not liked by the majority of the citizenry and most of them have abandoned their duties, spending time inside their walled estates. That has left a power vacuum for the more ruthless Nawabs to step in. Nawab Kilana's name strikes a spark of memory because she is the cousin of one Nawab Urdun-Mor, a dwarf who is the master of the Arena. Nawab Silar, Tordek recalls, is primarily in charge of trade through the South Gate, and the mingling of the two noble families bought Silar considerable protection in the form of soldiers loyal to Urdun-Mor.

How a full blooded elfen became a concubine is another matter. When pressed Sandria says she was captured by slavers along the King's Road when 12.

    1. ‘The Red Scourge’, a Tiefling Rogue

    2. 'River', a Dwarf World Speaker Shaman

    3.Zahnn, a Human Psion

    **Round One**

'Unstoppable' steps into the ring opposite the masked ‘Red Scourge’. The tiefling is twirling his obsidian knives in a figure eight pattern, much to the amusement of the crowd. He then flips end over end and catches the knives in each hand, ready for your move and bouncing on the balls of his feet.

He's training with the criminals and the wretches back in the school. He has is own room though.

On that note, during a personal practice with the gladiators-to-be (gladiator manager #2), two of the 'criminals' show significant potential equivalent to the stalwart unskilled slave. One of them is particularly beefy.

On the downside, Geb said about 5 of the wretches were diseased.

Quick as a desert cat 'Unstoppable' bellows and charges the tiefling. Caught off guard the masked tiefling flips his tail as a distraction but 'Unstoppable' is undaunted. A heavy horizontal blow to the midsection from your fighter's bone greatsword staggers the tiefling. As the creatures blood spatters on the sand it hisses a unpronounceable word (infernal strike) and its blood that has spattered your gladiator catches alight, burning him rather severely along the forearms and face. The tiefling quickly presses his attack home, forcing 'Unstoppable' to parry as quickly as he can with his greatsword, but one minor blow does get through his scale armor, a tiny puncture that begins to bleed.

Staggered, the red-skinned warrior barely has enough time to lift his arms when the saw-tooth blade of the greatsword slams the tiefling clear 10 feet into the air sideways. A sickening thud, and there is no doubt who is the winner.

Most of this is based off of D&D4e characters. I literally have a Character Builder character sheet for all of your gladiators and opponents. I'm using an abbreviated version of the combat system.

    >What can 'Unstoppable' do?
-A greatsword fighter. Does lots of damage.

    Attacks
    ----------
-Threatening Rush -- Rush and weapon attack. Opponent is marked (see below)
-Cleave -- Weapon attack plus your strength damage. Hits adjacent enemy for strength damage.
-Reaping strike - Weapon attack plus your strength damage. If you MISS you do your strength damage

-Spinning Sweep-Weapon attack plus your strength damage. Enemy knocked prone.
    >once/encounter

-Brute strike - triple weapon damage
    >once/day

-Combat Challenge - If the opponent tries to escape or attack someone other than you, you get an attack of opportunity.

-Action point - take an extra action. **special: 'Unstoppable' can use second wind as a minor action when action point used.

-Second wind - heal 9 hp. Takes a full round action
    >once/encounter
    -Unstoppable - heals 2d6 hp
    >once/day

    >ouch. but you are still faster

But not fast enough for Unstoppable to drop his stance and whirl the greatsword over his head in a wind-up swing, screaming for the crowd. The swing connects with the dwarf's legs...but unfortunately only on the meaty part of his thighs rather than totally crippling him. The dwarf goes down but continues to glow and suddenly he is surrounded by a golden pulse that seems to come from the earth, his wounds pulsing like a heart beat ... but nothing happens yet.

Peering down from the stands, Tordek sucks on a grape, a gift from the low-ranking Templar in gratitude for bringing gladiators to the arena when another riot had spilled out over the city.

Tordek notes the Shaman is mostly spent with his strongest energies, and this particular gladiator was trained to fight hard and long, using his healing powers to keep himself alive. That shaman would be more deadly if paired up with a strike in a 2 vs 2 match.

    >Brute Strike?
    Yes

The next two rounds fly quickly as 'Unstoppable' hacks down again at the dwarf, but the dwarf turns at the last second, half mitigating the blow.

In return a word of hate from the shaman sends Unstoppable reeling back for a moment, but in the burning desire to end this fight, Unstoppable screams and raises the greatsword above his head, falling to his knees as he swings the sword overhead and down.

    >15 damage finally to 4hp dwarf :D

There is a crimson spray as the dwarf's hairless head goes flying into the stands. The crowd cheers as unstoppable wobbly gets to his feet and prepares for the next match.

    >4/37 hp. +9 for short rest. 15/37 hp going into next match. Consider your tactics /tg/. The next one is a psion.

'Unstoppable! UNSTOPPABLE!' the crowd chants, cheering and stopping their feet. At the highest points in the amphitheater, the slaves drum their fists against the stone railings. A few nobles and merchants enjoying the evening are placing bets and draining mugs of broy.

    >Illiene whispers he can set up a little side bet with a noble or a merchant up to 20cp if you wish. Spirits bless his avaricious little soul.

Unstoppable strides in confidently, blood starting to crust over a few of his wounds, yet he stands defiant and twirls his bone greatsword end over end.

From out of the darkness the opposing gate rises. And a shaggy haired man dressed in a purple robe walks forwards. No not walks. The man hovers above the ground by about an inch, gliding as an unseen wind whips his garments about. The psion's right hand twitches near his belt, and a tumbleweed slowly rolls past in between Unstoppable and his opponent.

A desert rattler shakes its tail in warning in the distance.

The psion brings up the obsidian orb a second too soon, a dull clunk indicating the full force of the blow was blocked, but the psion's hand bears a nasty gash.

Unstoppable screams and nearly drops his greatsword as a painful mental thrust attempts to rape his mind, but after a moment only a flowing nosebleed is all that remains of the psion's 'strong' attack

Good question. It depends on the type of game. Usually no. For instance the Skirmish is an endurance game where only the innate healing powers of the Gladiator are suppost to be valid.

However rules have never stopped some from bribing the Templars or rigging the games...but those types of tactics are for higher tier fighters and situation where the fate of many may lie in the balance. You hear stories about the gladiator Rikus from Tyr and sometimes you wonder exactly how he was able to get close enough to Kalak to strike.

    >Picking up a healer, about healing
A shaman or druid or ardent or warlord or bard on your gladiator lineup would be a good addition in general. It would really shine when you start fighting in Pairs matches.

However you chose Geb to be the slave taskmaster primarily because of his healing skills. He takes care of healing the meatbags during downtime.

    >putting some of our less usefull property to work building some accomidation for our fighters?

Your gladiator compound is located in the slums of Raam, and thanks to Tordek's native Fame, it really isn't bothered with or shaken down too often.

You -could- order your slaves to build or possibly expand living quarters, but you could not expand outward into the slums without ceramic for the proper building permits, materials, etc. Also the criminals and wretches really are the worst of the worst. The are not skilled craftsman, barely eligible for haulers.

    >Armor, weapons
All good ideas, I'll have to address that another time but definitely something I want to expand into

    Questions for you guys
    >Weapons breaking/inferior weapons rules for Dark Sun. Do you guys want them implemented? This may make weapon dependent gladiators a bit more risky.

    >Arcane focused gladiators. Currently you can only field them in Raam with a permit... which isn't much more than a bribe given the corruption in the city. You guys ok with this rule?

    >Genasi. Think they have a place in this game/Dark Sun?

    >Kreen practice combat.
    I'll get on it.

Kr'ktt trotts over to the dwarf in what seems to be a hunter's lope. Sideways and leisurely.

The dwarf spits and instantly turns into a swarm of spitting swirling hornets. The dwarf-shaped mass gestures, and a vine erupts from the earth, attempting to grab Kr'ktt, but failing.

Kr'ktt just barrels into the mass, sending half the swarm slamming against the ground and dazedly buzzing.

I may run another episode late this evening (10-14 hours from now).

If I do I'll send heads up via Twitter.

The combat took too long in this one and I have an idea of how to change that so its not just 'hit him again' every round. That should free up time so we can delve into more management.
