Were up to Episode 70, a nice round number.
No significance, I just thought I'd point it out.

You are Command David Lister, CO of the elite independant corps, the Nachtmaren Unit for the Principality of Zeon.
Over the last 7 months, you've fought stolen Zaku's, Subterranean Battleships, the 3 consecutive sieges of Salina Cruz, had combat exercises with Dozle Zabi, beaten the (sadly now departed) Black Tristars in Zero-G Mobile Suit Basketball, Saved Garma, Killed Agar, survived Amuro (mostly), accidentially started a Zeonic civil war, rescued Cima Girahou from behind enemy lines, and taught Bernie Wiseman how not to die in a cross-counter. You've racked up more Tank kills than you can count, and have the first ever MS kill of the war.
Suffice to say, you EARNED that Zeon Cross.

    LAST TIME ON ZEONQUEST!

After successfully managing to crack the defenses of Federal HQ in Jaburo, you're forced to pull out at the last minute. Your primary resource site, vital to the war: Odessa, is under attack by Revil himself in the largest Federation offensive of the war.
You and everybody else scramble whatever you can to get there and hold the area.

After rendezvouing with transports carrying fresh Mobile Suits in the sands of Morroco (sp?) you continued at full speed towards Odessa. It's getting dark by the time you arrive... perfect for a night raid.

You successfully breach the Federation air cover and mount a brutal air-assault on a Federation Artillery Battalion, and as it's escorts rush back to avenge their fallen units you run for the cover of a nearby village.

    But then:

    >Whilst the rest take up positions, you check behind a village church.

    >You barely manage to leap aside before the crimson beam shot fills the air. You fire a burst through church at where the enemy was, but there's a flash of white and the Gundam evades.

    >"Sir! We've got Dom remains here! It looks like Black Tri-Sta..."

    >"HE'S STILL HERE YOU IDIOTS! GET TO MY POSITION NOW! IT'S THE WHITE DEVIL!"

    YOUR ORDERS?
    >> Arty 08/06/10(Fri)12:26 No.11553818
    Fuck yeah, away we go!
    >Suffice to say, you EARNED that Zeon Cross.
Hopefully we dont get the OTHER kind of Zeon cross today.

My take on things is that the Gundam is too fast and it's ranged weapons too dangerous for us to be able to simply retreat back to our lines. Our only hope is to either cripple it badly enough to force it away or kill it outright. We've gotta pull every trick in the book if we plan to get out of this one alive. Although we still dont know the pilot is a 15 year old kid, taunting him would still be a good idea.

Calvin and Hovis should continue playing rear guard, keeping the GM's busy as long as possible. Maybe try to bounce a laser com off the Outer Heaven and call in artillery fire on the GMs. Zol should be ready to come in towards us fast and do a heat hawk attack. It doesnt matter if it's normal heat hawks or the ship buster, he's just got to throw SOMETHING. I dont think Zol ever used one of his hawk attacks the other times we fought the Gundam, (though he did get up in his face the one time.)

David should try to keep its attention while Elaine and Jolyne try to either flank or bracket him with beam fire. Bernie is to stay back and look for an opening to use some grenades, maybe we can scew up the Gundam's optics. When it's at last disarmed Elaine or Jolyne should get in close with their beam naginatas. Or just do that right from the get go if we can draw his attention enough.

You fire another burst of beams at him from your Beam Carbine, you're going to need to reload in another 2 bursts, and you don't think he's going to give you the time to that.
Your fire forces him to dive out of the way and you take the oppourtunity to get behind the church he was using for cover previously and decide to reload now.

"Elaine, Jolyne, try to flank him from the north and the south, I'll keep his attention."

To punctuate that sentence you toss a Cracker Grenade behind you to keep him on his toes.

"Zolomon, you think you can let Hovis and Calvin take up the slack and get over here?"

You break cover in time with the Gundam, both of your beam shots go wide and you both dive behind some more buildings.

"I dunno boss, they're doing okay for their first time in PeeDees, but I don't think they're ready for that."

"Do what you can then, keep them off our backs whilst we try to either put this guy down, or get him to retreat."

You prime another Cracker and toss it in the Gundam's general direction. You then flank around the buildings it was using for cover, and come face to face with it as it scrambles away from the Grenade. It's leaps like a scalded cat through the adjacent warehouse to avoid your burst of fire.
Whereupon it leaps into the sky to avoid the beam shots of Elaine and Jolyne as they flank him from both sides. He lands back behind the church.

Suddenly, you see Bernard's Zaku Kai leap up from it's hiding spot. It tosses a flash grenade, and the bright flare sillouettes the building. Bernard grasps his chain mine and using his thrusters spins in the air, the long line of explosives trail as he swings them around, intended to entangle the Gundam, but at the last moment it lurches to the side, and rolls on top of the church.
Which instead of the Gundam, the Chain-Mines wrap around instead.
There is a massive succession of explosions...
    >> Arty 08/06/10(Fri)13:38 No.11554643
Huh, wow. Wasnt aware we had a chain mine. Oh well, it was a good try. Maybe the Gundam fell into the church after it blew up?

The church explodes completely, the blast hurls the gundam (which still appears intact) upwards into the air, it's shield goes flying and embeds itelf into a disused warehouse.
You're amazed to see that the pilot still has the presence of mind to re-orient himeself mid-air and land somewhat on his feet. Nevertheless, it's an awkward landing ontop of a couple of buildings and dust and debris bloom outwards, obscuring the Gundam.

You prime a Stick-Bomb, and dash forwards intending to finish this, you see Bernards Zaku Kai running in as well.
Out of the blue, there is a lance of ruby light from the cloud, Bernard doesn't have time to dodge, and the beam severs both of his feet at the knees. His Mobile Suit hits the ground heavily and rolls over several times.
You toss the grenade, only to see the Gundam bat it out of the way with his free hand, blasts from Jolyne and Elaine's rifles crazing around where you can now see him to be.
You lower your shoulder, push your thruster output to max and brutally close the distance with a powerful shoulder-ram before he has a chance to fire at you.
You collide with an almight clash, and the two of you fly through the air, locked together, your opposing verniers fighting each other to stay upright. You both land badly and are tossed about head over heels. He finishes upright and as you grasp for your fallen Beam Carbine he takes aim and fires near point blank...

Flashbang/'nades in the church. Use the 'plosions silhouette to get a lucky beam shot off on the Gundam's juicy torso. Zol rushes after the Gundam's distracted from LOLRAPE and does the killing blow if it isn't down after that.

Otherwise, no meeting it in melee. Have Bernie continue to use his flashbangs and other grenades to keep the Gundam off balance. You're carbine in hand you raise and prepare to pull the trigger.

"Look out sir! Above you!" Bernard cries out, and both you and the Gundam look up in time to see an HLV descending at full speed directly towards the both of you.
You have mere moments to react and you both push your thrusters hards as you dive out of the way. The explosions of the falling space vehicle carries you further.

"Oh wow. It's been a while since I did this..." you casually think as your blown clear out of the village.
You manage to land without hurting yourself or your suit, and get a sit-rep.

    "Elaine here, A-Ok"

Same as modern jets being missile armed really, yet not being able to destroy surface ships with impunity. The OH has it's own beam guns and anti-fighter weapons and is quite mobile to boot. Not to mention that with Minovsky particles around the Core-Boosters can't use radar or other assisted targeting.

We might be able to do it once we get that shield. Since Jol's weapon took a hit, if we find survivors we could have Jol take them with Bernie to an area away from the immediate battle, or make their way to friendly lines. Probably see if any of the Tristar's weapons are salvageable for Jol to use, too.

I think the Gelgoog shortage is EXACTLY why he's picked it as a mobile suit.

Anyway, Char is soon obscured by the failing light and falling dust from his overly explosive entrance. You turn to rejoin the rest of your unit.
You find Elaine dragging Bernies legless Zaku behind some cover and meet up with Zolomon and the rest, who have since rejoined the unit.

    "What's your status?"

"We're beginning to get low on ammo. Plus our chest mounted beam cannons are starting to overheat. Hovis and Calvin took a couple of dings, but nothing serious."

"Calvin, any word on the Outer Heaven?"

"I've just got contact sir, they sey they've managed to shake their attackers and are coming for us now."

"Tell them were going to need some close support against incoming mixed units."

    "Roger."

You step forward to take a look at the incoming enemy.
It appears to be 5 GM's of mixed variants. You spot a pair [G] types, and three more GM's of unidentified variants. One type appears to have reinforced upper armour, and carries what is probably the Rail-Gun mentioned earlier. There are two of these. The unit commander is probably the in the GM with reinforced armour, improved verniers and what appears be some kind of two pronged Beam Spear.
At least 10 tanks mill around them, and the Mobile Suits are advancing cautiously towards you. That's why they haven't managed to catch up to you yet.

You order everyone to fall back to west to a more defendable section of buildings. You salvage what you can from the Black Tristars.
The results aren't good, one functioning 330, fully loaded, 3 Panzerfausts and a 120mm MG with Grenade Launcher (GL is empty, 120mm has about 80 rounds left.)

45 seconds in, and the smoke is beginning to clear, you spot the enemy formation. The tanks have spread out and are probably acting as spotters and artillery support whilst the Mobile Suits pour it on. You spot Zolomon clear the building and the both of your dash towards the centre mass of the enemy unit.
One of the Tanks must have seen you, as the GM's turn to face you, you bring up the Gundam Shield and fire a burst from your Carbine. Using the view-slit in the shield (handy that) you see your shots take out a tank and slice clean through the cockpit of a [G] type.
Explosions rock the area as Zolomon opens fire with his 330, before drawing a pair of Heat Hawks, tanks are thrown upwards and the remaining GM's and tanks begin to face him also.
One GM steps up to fire it's beam pistol at Zolomon, only for Elaine to take his head of with her Beam Rifle, the mobile suit falls to the floor, smoking.

You dash forwards, still using the shield, firing another burst from your Carbine. Shot's impact on your shield, but it holds and you draw your heat hawk and advance on the commander.

His Beam Spear comes out and ignites the twin beam sabers on the end. He thrusts forwards with it and you parry the strike with your shield, knocking his arm outwards.
A heat hawk flies in and neatly severs the arm just below the shoulder, you have to duck to avoid it.

    "Watch it Zolomon!"
    "Sorry!"

Unbalanced the enemy staggers to the side and you press your advantage and swing horizontally with your Axe at his mid-section, but the strike is clumsy and only partially penetrates, leaving the weapon lodged inside.
You leap upwards and kick the back of the blade, forcing it clean through and into the air towards your positions.

    "Ah!" You hear Elaine cry.
    "That landed on my head!"

But by this point your already leaping over the ruined buildings the enemy was using for cover as the enemy leader explodes behind you, trusting your team not to shoot you by mistake.

You pick up enemy tanks trying to track, and then being taken completely by suprise as flanking Wappa Dragoons hit them in their side armour with co-ordinated AT missile strikes.

You and Zolomon just manage to get into cover for when the Outer Heaven unloads it's entire AG Rocket Pod compliment into the enemy.

You'd have to get creative with the mounting so the backblast doesn't end up flying right into the pilot's face. They might be able to mount a LAW or recoilless rifle, but it would cut their combat effectiveness way down once they fired it off, and there's no telling how badly the drastic weight shift and reduction of firing one would affect it.

You have the Outer Heaven land and you begin to load the remains of the Black Tristars aboard along with Bernie. You raise Char on the comms network.

"The situation here seems clear, do you need asisstance?"

"No, I'm quite alright Commander. The Gundam retreated under covering fire from the Guncannons, although you did a fine job softening him up first, you have my deepest respect. It seems we've both come a long way since the Grand Canyon."

"Do you need a ride back to HQ?"

"That's very kind of you, I would seem to be in need of transport if you have the space."

About 5 minutes later Char returns, despite fighting the Gundam, his suit appears to be in near pristine condition.
"How did you manage to go toe-to-toe with the Gundam without a scratch?" Zolomon asks.

"You've got to keep in mind that whilst the pilot spatial awareness due to being a newtype has gone from strength to strength over the course of this war, his piloting skills remain average at best. Pushing him to perform complicated maneouvers and there's a momentary hesitation, perform complicated manouvers yourself, and he wont follow, preferring to rely on basic piloting actions. It smacks of someone whose had to receive very rushed training, probably whilst on the Trojan Horse and in between missions."

    "Huh."

After loading everything aboard, you take off towards Odessa HQ.
The journey takes about 20 minutes.
You set down at the HQ's airfield, it's hectic and chaotic, even at this time of night. You land and the Outer Heaven begins shuttling to the Hangars.

It takes about an hour to get a decent hangar space, and a supply chain running. At the end of which it's 11pm, and you finally get to meet the head of Odessa HQ.

M'Quve looks like he's seen better days, understandably, but his large office is the height of opulance. Priceless antiques decorate the room, ones famous enough that even you recognise them instantly.

"Well commander, I thank you for delivering Commander Char here, on time for once, and your actions on the front has prevented a possible enemy breakthrough. I'll expect more of the same tommorow, but for now Commander I suggest you get some rest, Jaburo this morning, and Odessa tonight, you've racked up a fair few frequent flyer miles today haven't we?"

"See! I told you!" Zolomon whispers to you.

You're dismissed shortly afterwards whilst Char continues to converse with M'Quve.
You have the nagging feeling you forgot to tell Char something important, but you can't recall what.
Oh well, you're sure you'll remember sooner or later.

There aren't any barracks or rooms available on the base, so you bunk up in the Outer Heaven.

The next morning, you wake up at 7 in the morning and get a sit-rep from Anita and Ookawara.

    The Combat SITREP from Anita:
"Things progressed badly during the night, whilst about 90% of the troops from Operation Joker made it here before the end of the day, many of them were too fatigued and suffering from battle damage to sustain combat for long. The available forces for night combat ran thin, and those who were available but tiredness took a toll on them as well.
The third defence line's coherency has badly degraded as a result, and there's been talk all morning about reconsolidating to the 4th defence line, but I think the situation will probably stabilise when the Operation Joker forces re-enter the field.

    Ookawara's sit-rep:

"I got good news and bad news. The bad news is that repairing the Zaku Kai will take time we don't have, and whilst I can do it using the UMP parts we got from those Rick-Dom II wrecks, it'd take at least a day. Jolynes Beam Rifle's going to take at least until midday to fix, and the arms on the Pezun Dowdage are showing signs of stress fractures and extreme wear. That's going to take several more hours to fix, and even then it's a stopgap measure.
No for the good news. We've got Mobile Suits and UMP parts and weapons coming out of our ears, the Rhino arrived dead on time with no problems, everybody else's suits are up to 100% efficiency, and we've got some interesting new conversion packs for the Gelgoog from Pezun to try out. Plus we've also got top MS priority, so if we need to replace something, we can ask for pretty much anything."

    Options are:
    Type-C Gelgoog Cannon option.
Retools the backpack to mount a Beam cannon, the design reminds you of the Guncannon you just salvaged. Coincidence?

Type-B High Mobility pack. Increased mobility and extra storage space for weapons, it would probably work just as well in gravity as in space, although you suspect it'd perform better upstairs.

    Type-J Jaeger refit.
A Gelgoog design that essentially uses parts from the Unified Maintanence Plan to replace those we can't make without Gihren Loyalist factories, essentially creating a new model of Gelgoog.
Not something you could do quickly, but it's worth mentioning that if you lose a Gelgoogs arm, you can replace it with parts from the UMP.
The rest should take no more than a morning to do.

Beam Chaff sort of relies on it being Chaff. It's sort of hard to explain.
Mostly because it's never ever been properly explained in cannon.
It's also not 100% effective, beams get through, just scattered and weakened.

As for modifying the Act Zaku, that'd be a long process as you have to make sure you don't need to apply magnetic coating to anything, plus the Act is very carefully balanced, that's another reason why it's so agile.
Adding improved thrusters might work, it might overbalance it, you'd need to test it out.

Odessa has an huge store of UMP parts, which can be used to build the following.
    Zaku Kai's
    Rick-Dom MkII's
Gelgoog Jaegers (but this takes a while and uses certain parts they have limited amounts off. Plus it uses a LOT of the UMP parts too.)
    Kampfers

The latter are actually pretty easy to build, it's mostly just a basic aerodynamic frame, ammo and rocket fuel.
On that note, don't get hit. You'll go up faster than a Leo.

They also have a limited supple of Gyans of all flavours you can get Gelgoogs, (so Gyan Cannons, Gyan High Mobility's and Gyan Kreigers) although Gyan Marines are currently the sole purview of the Mashiba Team at this point.
Aside from this all of the older suits are availabalbe (Zaku's Goufs, Dom's etc.) All Dom Tropens are currently earmarked or in the field, and there are a couple of Gigans available too.
The Hildolfrs are currently all in use or being repaired.

    Does this help?

Okay then. Bernie in a Zaku Kai. To be fair it's probably the MS he's best suited for.

You enquire about the availability of Gyan Kreigers. You manage to find one currently being put back together after being salvaged last night.

"It was pretty badly damaged, but since a lot of the internals are UMP we could just swap them out and patch up the armour. We were going to give it a brief shakedown first, but I guess it should be fine. Watch out for problems in case we missed something."

You thank them anyway and take the Gyan Krieger.
Which is essentially a lot like a Gyan, except it's got improved thrusters, extra verniers for agility (you won't really get the full benefit on earth though) a beam lance, and it's shield comes with a pair of low power beam guns and 4 grenade launchers.

With your line-up chosen the techs get to work. They should be finished in about an hour or so.
Around about half seven, an envelope marked "Top Secret" arrives from M'Quves desk.

You open it up, presumably your orders for today are inside. You skim the contents.

    TOP SECRET ORDERS
    FROM: ODESSA FIELD MARSHALL M'QUVE
TO: CMMDR D.LISTER (ZC, ZKCmOD, BoM) NACHTMAREN CO

    Dear David.

Due to the semi-nebulous nature of your unit's command structure and of independant military units in general, I am technically unable to make cast iron orders of you, but nevertheless Lord Captain Garma has ordered you to defend Odessa, which you ARE beholden to, and hopefully you believe that following the local chain of command is conducive to that. Everything I've seen and heard from other so far seems to validate that you are an fair and reliable individual in this respect.
I only bring this up, as I feel I may be about to ask entirely too much of you. Only yesterday you stood on the precipice of total victory over the Federation, now I believe you can be so again, but only if your willing to go further than anyone has ever done so for Zeon.
David, in the name of finishing this war:
    Revil
    Must
    Die.

I was also thinking we could emphisise it to be too much risk attacking what is likely to be thier best defended area for what wouldn't be satisfactory gain, but M'quve would likely just get pissy and consider us cowards, and is certain in his tactic that cutting off the head will deal a major blow to the body.
And he's right that it might cause a fair amount of disruption in the feddy forces attacking Odessa, but it's still not a good idea overall.

I don't think we should mention GARMA DIEING AT ALL! That might send some red flags to this guy who doesn't know us at all.

We should TRY to convince him that straight up killing him would only hurt us, as it could motivate Fed forces, and anyone who takes his position would likely be unwilling to make peace when we want to.

Revil isn't a moron. If we kidnap him, talk to him for a while, and can convince him that a truce is not only possible, but favorable to continued war, we can use him to end this god damned war before Christmas.

It's one thing if we kill him in battle. It's a war, people die, especially when those people are in the military.

If he surrenders or we capture him, though, then we personally escort him back to Lord Garma or Lady Kycilia, flipping the bird to M'Quve if he gets pissy about it. Killing him in battle makes him a casualty; it's murdering him afterwards that would make him a martyr.

This time we should make sure he doesn't escape, though.

Guys, I appreciate that Revil is a cool dude (General Revil's Badass Fedation and all that) but he's a perfectly valid target if he's on the field. He's their chief strategic officer and taking him out would throw the Odessa attack (specifically) and the whole Federation counter-offensive (generally) into chaos. It's not like he's a public figure like the Zabi's, holding the Federation together with his personality, he's just their general and killing him is going to be nothing but in our favor.

Yes, his "Zeon is exhausted" speech had a notable impact but it's not like it suddenly makes him a huge lynch-pin of public morale to the point that they'd be enraged by his death, he's not a nobleman or cult figure or something. He's a general, and a very good one. Even if he does somehow become a martyr and huge rallying point for Feddie morale, the loss of his strategic guidance would still more than make up for it.

If we capture him we've got all of the information we need to convince him of what'll happen if the EFF keeps fighting. We know what Girhen is capable of and that includes another colony drop to finish off both sides. The war has to be ended swiftly and that is no longer within the Federation's capability.

But we might, just might be able to get in, destroy their headquarters, and get out again alive. That's honestly all we can hope for, and the only real way to get out of the Battle of Odessa with our forces reasonably intact, at least intact enough to put up other defenses and hold our other Earthbound conquests.

Well we do know it's around right now, for whatever reason, due to previous threads. Also since it's already proved (in the anime) that it can strike targets from very long range in space it's reasonable to assume it would be able to be tuned to hit Earth. It probably couldn't reach Mars or anything, but it's already close enough to Earth to be dangerous where it is. No need to move it into close orbit or spend days meticulously escorting it into position, the entire Zeon fleet can guard it where it is and it can itself be used against any retaliatory fleet the Federation might send.

Dude you can't just make stuff up capability-wise that was never hinted at in the show. Hell it's like you're trying to downplay the Federation when they really are still in a strong position.

They have no reason at all to suddenly surrender after fighting for so long, we shouldn't treat them like some harmless toddler getting in the way of our fight with space hitler.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)22:06 No.11560763
    >>11560726

Oh I'm not arguing that they should surrender, just that Ghiren has a nasty ace up his sleeve if it comes to it. Also it's really not making things up, I'm just extrapolating based on available evidence. There's absolutely no reason to assume that a laser than can already fire such a distance can't have it's focal point tuned to hit Earth. That's a quality of lasers in general, not of the Solar Ray in particular.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)22:15 No.11560858
    >>11560763

But can you keep the laser focused despite the scattering effect of Earth's atmosphere? At that range, no.

You can only use it to threaten any Feddie ships stupid enough to come within effective range, meaning the distance you can fire the weapon and still hit the target before it moves too far off course AND the target hasn't moved so much that instead of the laser concentrating in one spot it gets dragged across the target and only scorches it.

No more than three light seconds, at most.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)22:26 No.11561010
    >>11560858

I'm not so sure, myself. Logically if the atmosphere is enough to dissipate the power of the Solar Ray enough to negate it when it's focal point is tuned on Earth's surface then normal sunlight in space would have to be intense enough to vaporize warships in seconds, which it patently cannot do.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)22:36 No.11561149
cept the solar ray cannon is just another bullshit anime superweapon that charges itself on sunlight and focuses it into a super beam shot.

It's been variously called a solar powered beam weapon and a giant laser, there seems to be little official information either way.

The Solar Ray was apparently nothing more then a more directed Solar System. The actual Colony Laser wasn't invented until the end of the Gryps Conflict, and was a far more efficient weapon.

That said, the Solar Ray was stationed either within the boundaries of or nearby Side 3, meaning it wold have to fire either at or beyond the Moon's distance from Earth. I doubt its range is that far.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)22:47 No.11561284
    >>11560858
A light-second is (roughly) 300,000 km. The distance from the earth to the moon is (again roughly) 384,000 km. A laser weapon with an effective range of three light-seconds is a threat to any ship in earth-lunar space that it can get a line of sight on. If it has enough power behind it and a large enough lens (neither of which would be an issue for a colony sized weapon drawing on a colony sized power supply) it won't matter if it can't focus onto a spot smaller than a hundred meters across when it shoots through the atmosphere, since it'll just melt anything it hits. A wider angle beam might be better than a narrow one, since you want to target large formations of ships all at once instead of popping battleships one at a time.

That does conflict with some other info though, like the fact that it apparently took as much electricity as was produced in Side 3 in several hours in order to fire. If it just focused ambient sunlight through mirrors or something, there would be no need for all that electricity. It's also been actually described as a 'colony sized beam weapon' though that may just be a bad translation. It's ALSO said to be powered with many colony solar batteries.

So basically I have no idea. If it's a beam weapon any speculation is worthless, if it is in fact a really big laser than no matter how it's powered it could effectively wreck targets on Earth.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)22:54 No.11561395
    >>11561360
Well then since it was never stated to have such a capability then I think it's better to err on the side of caution and say it cannot burn earth from Side-3.

But it does, there's even four of them. The two Solar Systems, the Solar Ray Cannon, and the Gryps Colony Laser.

Not to mention the Angel Halo in Victory, which was also UC Gundam.

That's the thing though, if it's a laser, as is often stated, then it's completely feasible, even easy at that size, to make it hit Earth. Even if it was built without the ability to do so for some retarded reason then it could be easily modified to do so.

It's like saying 'sure they could build a gun to hold 30 bullets that size easily, but since it's never stated how many it holds we should err on the side of caution and say it only holds 2' or something

Hitting the Earth with a laser that size would be trivial. It would almost be harder to make one that couldn't, honestly.

Oh yeah, Victory also had the Keilas Guilie, a 1.2km long satellite cannon which is stated to be more devastating than a colony drop, which is a 20-30km long object falling from orbit.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:05 No.11561547
The solar system weapons seem to be 'just' giant solar focusing mirrors. Those are simple in that they don't need any power source, but hard in that they would need to be flexible. If the Solar Ray needed to be charged before firing then it must have some kind powered laser backed by huge banks of capacitors. All you would need to be able to hit targets on the earth's surface would be to have your monster fire in a lower frequency than the ultraviolet, since everything above that gets sucked up by some layer of the atmosphere.

Still, putting in in side 3 seems rather silly. You've got the moon siting in the way blocking your fire for almost all of the strategic map.

    They weren't, so they aren't.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:10 No.11561613
    >>11561547

Well it's obvious that they can move colonies due to the whole colony drop thing so it stands to reason they could move the Solar Ray Cannon in the same manner if they needed to. The point of it in the anime is that it was hastily implemented due to the Feddie attack on Solomon and fired even more hastily, burning it out. If they'd had the leisure to build it properly then it could just have been moved.

Not that it was really needed anyways, you don't even need mirrors or anything, just a ton of Fresnel lens' in various places in orbit, they don't even need to be together or anything, just all focused on the same spot. But having a few hundred small ships drop off 100m square plastic sheets in orbit and go 'lol we can destroy anything on Earth now' isn't really very exciting.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:12 No.11561645

    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:16 No.11561692
    >>11561557

That's the thing though, if it's a laser then they certain could have fired it at Earth. I don't think you understand just how easy it is to focus a laser that size to hit a target just six or so light seconds away. It would be trivial, absolutely trivial. You can't just say oh well THIS laser couldn't do that because it doesn't follow the basic principals of lasers at all.

Also the reason it's not used in that manner in the show is that it was only partly functional just before the last battle and it was burned out after one shot, prompting the Feddies to attack quickly to prevent another firing.

In the end though you don't even NEED any of that complicated stuff to wreck Earth from orbit, you don't even need to drop a colony, all you need is a few ton of plastic and the ability to move around in orbit. The reason we're all politely ignoring this in TV, video games, etc is because like ALL theoretically real-world space combat it's boring, and likely to be over in seconds before anyone else can respond or do anything about it.

Man, who could ever doubt that Ghiren would gas millions of people? Seriously, just look at his face!

Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_lens and http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6111190.html so we already know that can be made cheap and flexible and deployable in orbit. Just make as many as you want, maybe a few hundred meters across and deploy them wherever you please in orbit and presto! Instant super-weapon. Hell, if they're flexible all you need to do is stretch them to alter the focal point so you wouldn't even have to be in a specific orbit or anything and you could re-focus to new targets in seconds.

When you have a high powered laser of any kind hitting atmosphere you get beam diffusion. It'll super heat the air into a plasma state which'll disrupt the ability of the laser to get all the way to it's target. I'm not saying it wont work, but it'll lose a lot of power in the process.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:39 No.11562026
    >>11561992

Sure, but all you'd have to do then is tune the frequency down below ultraviolet and it'd get through just fine (probably). That's only really doable if it generated the light itself though, if it just refocuses sunlight onto a target then that's not an option. See earlier for speculation on that though.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:49 No.11562166

The main problem with using underpowered solar mirrors as weapons is that they only really work on certain angles. You can't shoot at a target that is 'behind' you relative to the sun, and as they get further away from the front, you start to lose efficiency. You can counter this by using one mirror to bounce light to another, but then you need to put up twice as many to get the same result.

Still, not bad for a bargain basement superweapon. Even if it can't wipe out Jaburo in one mighty blast you can at least melt the polar icecaps and bury the coasts under 60m of new ocean, or incite global winter by setting all of the forests on fire.
    >> Anonymous 08/06/10(Fri)23:57 No.11562270
    >>11562166

That's the beauty of a Fresnel lens though, it's not a mirror, it's a scored plastic lens that focuses light that passes through it, and by controlling the focal distance and angle you can hit anywhere that you can see as long as the light source (the sun) is more than 90 degrees from you target point, giving you far more flexibility than a mirror. Hell, carry a mirror too and you can hit the target no matter where you are in orbit.

In addition since they can be made flexible enough to shift the focal point on the fly you can keep on target virtually forever, and with multiple sources all focusing at one point there's no igniting the atmosphere in a local area, so very little worry about beam diffusion.

All you'd need is maybe 100-200 of them at about 100m square and you could incinerate anything on Earth or in orbit very quickly. It'd need some R&D of course, but what doesn't?

Not that I'm suggesting them for this quest, that would defeat the flavor of the setting rather completely, just pointing out how easy it would be to make a real life orbital weapon system and why focusing on single giant cannons is somewhat silly at that tech level.
