    Alternate: None

Secondary Objective: Destroy the Liberian Command and Control Bunker (6.319363, -10.799958)

Ok, our operation in Liberia is entering its final stage. We've received a tip from within their government as to the location of the Moroccan prince. The informant is a highly placed government official and the intel has been rated as A-1 valid. The informant has access to the Prince, and will initially secure him prior to our own extraction team's arrival. Both will be removed from Liberia by the French Naval Commandos. Our plan is a simple snatch and grab, using helicopters. We'll need your Squadron to provide air cover for the helicopters, both on insertion and extraction ends of the mission.
The Liberian C3 Bunker is close to the extraction area, and has been added as a Secondary target. Its destruction will prevent a coordinated response from the Liberian forces. We've received plans from a member of the Engineering team that built the bunker. During his debriefing, he revealed that the complex is buried fairly deep, and is constructed of two foot thick reinforced concrete. Ventilation is provided by numerous stations, although strikes on these would be difficult and result in unacceptable collateral damage. Most penetration weaponry would result in a kill, provided the munition lands on target with minimal deviation.
We've also identified a Liberian Army garrison near the port district. The forces therein may pose a problem should the extraction team take longer then expected. A strike on the garrison would sow disorder and confusion among the ranks, providing an extra layer of cover to the operation. The location has been added to your mission brief and is considered a valid secondary target.

HUMINT: Our informant is a well known government official, he has confirmed the Prince's location in the National Museum. A small group of the Liberian presidential security force is guarding the Prince, and we expect little to no resistance from them. AirScan's operational readiness is deemed as low, they took a significant hit from your previous action. Our source is reporting that they're preparing to pull out of the area to minimize their losses, and most likely will not engage provided that they're left alone.
    ELINT: None
SATINT: We've located the Coastal Patrol Boat from operation Blind Tourniquet in the harbour area, undergoing repairs. Command advises action against it should it prove to be in an operational state.

Threat Assessment: Elevated. Liberian forces are on alert and prepared for further conflict.

    ROE: Weapons Free

    >> Anonymous 07/18/10(Sun)21:22 No.11212664
A bit off-topic, but how expensive is it to produce VX gas?
I figure an artillery barrage (or air drop, same effect) of cluster mines that release VX when disturbed would be an extremely effective area denial weapon for depopulating major cities. Disguise the mines as Bricks (an innocuous thing, common in a city) that spew VX when disturbed, and scattering them over a populous civilian area, will render the area uninhabitable.
The risk that a random mine will go off and produce horrible, horrible death on anyone nearby will make the area too risky to live in - especially if the mines are hard to find (as they would be if they were disguised).

However, I'm not sure whether to use a simple explosive agent (TNT) or VX agent in terms of cost effectiveness. VX saturates the area and makes it unlivable for a while, but is more expensive. Thoughts, /tg/?

Actually, I just checked the GPS coords that were included. a strike team moving in from the south could hit the garrison, then the bunker, then watch over the extraction as it's coming out. The bunker's not too far off of the extraction team's infil/exfil point.

Exocets may be cheaper, given their employer, and probably just as effective.

Personally, i'd have your AtG specialist load out with a) bunker busters, b) cluster bombs, and c) a pair of exocets. The rest load up with HARMS-dominant loadouts, rocket/gun pods, and probably a pair of sidewinders or AA-10s each. Seems to be the most balanced loadout possible.

Or, if you'd like to not do the all-eggs-in-one-basket thing, disperse the exocets, bunker busters and cluster bombs among the squadron as you see fit.

Tactics... fast Wild Weasel strike initially to clear a safe corridor for the Helos, and then engage the secondaries as best able before moving back into a standard escort pattern. Stay together to handle any surprises with massive force. Beyond that... I dunno. I'll let the experts handle it.

True Story, they had a massive contract with the US being finalized, the Air Force loved the Arrow, but Dief scrapped it since he didn't like the head of Avro.

i highly encourage the op or anyone in his group to pick up a 15e strike eagle,

why? because it has a rediculous thrust to weighty ratio, opening up more options in acm, and giving it even more gofast then a raptor, but most importaintly, it can carry even more shit in a phantom II, creating a world of possibilities in equipment loadouts and customisation,
the airframe itself is based on the air sup eagle variant, so its can hold its own against smaller dogfighters, while able to hold turns longer thanks to the extra thrust.

more modern jets like the f-16, hornet, mig variants, and even f-22/35 variants are realy just side grades when you consider the longjevity of jets like the f-4 or f-111, with better power and aerodynamics, the f-15 is a definit upgrade.

The biggest loss from the Arrow Program was the loss of the Iroquois Engine.

With burners, it logged 32,000 lbs of thrust, which meant that even on a fully loaded Arrow, the damn thing would have had a Thrust Weight ratio of .94, the ability to Supercruise, and an operational altitude of 50,000 ft.

The plane they tested the Iroqouis on, a B-47, was scrapped when they returned it to the Americans, because the engines thrust had BENT the airframe.

That might be Propaganda. The Arrow was unbelievably fast, all weather, two setear, with an internal weapons bay for guided missiles. It operated at extreme altitudes at Mach 2.

The F-4, by contrast, operated lower, at slower speeds, and carried external weapons, but could operate off a carrier (no small feat). It also had marginally better slow speed performance. Turn rates I'm still looking up, but given the Arrow's size, I'm guessing it wasn't super hot in a turning fight, however the delta wing is acknowledged as a decent shape for maneuvering.

For comparison, the Arrow with J79 (17,000 lbs with Afterburner) set speed and altitude records in its day.

So a nearly 40% increase in thrust, well, I'll just let you imagine how powerful that is.

So...as far as this mission goes. Two pronged assault. One pair comes in from the north and hits the garrison and frigate while the second pair hits the control bunker from the south. Both pairs will also need to be able to suppress AAA and SAM sites as well as ground forces and any possible air assets left in the area.

As someone else said this will require a very diverse package. An anti shipping missile or two for the frigate(or some other precision ordinance). Cluster or precision munitions for the garrison. Precision bunker buster or two for the C3. Close support weapons for the extraction. And finally a basic AtA load out.

    What will everyone be flying?

Forward Air Observers loved them cause they could roll into a ground attack line up more precisely than any other attack aircraft out there...on their first try. They were just that responsive. Not to mention they're rather smaller than most aircraft. "Scooter" was a well deserved name. If I was running the Op...

Rafale, Air to Air with some Anti-Tank missiles.
A4 is a bomb truck, with a good mix of Cluster/Rockets.
The F-18 is our Strike, with some big GBU pipes to blow the crap out of the bunker, backed up with 2 Amraams and 4 sidewinders, maybe another set of clusters just in case.
The Mig-29 would be similar to the F-18, minus the big bunker busters.

Oh its the change in shifts now is it? I know I always hate to miss most of a thread. Hopefully this one will last another day.

A4 could take out the ship with a missile strike and then go on to support the retrieval of the prince. Not the best for dropping bunker busters i'll admit. He'll probably have to rely on his cannons only for self defense if AirScan comes calling but then he's pretty good with cannons now isn't he.

Oh i completely agree but he'll likely want to use those hard points for something else for this mission. They've got a lot of bases to cover and only so many airframes.

Thats also one of two problems i have with the A4, only 5 hard points...one of which is almost always used for a drop tank. Thankfully he probably won't need the tank this mission due to refueling being available.

    >> Anonymous 07/19/10(Mon)02:29 No.11217593
It's close to 8 in the morning in central Europe now. . .

That being said, I'm here nonetheless.

A plan: You have to keep the confusion level as high as possible to give the extraction team time and clear out any AA defenses in the area.

Cluster bombs on the army base and the ship in the harbor. Alternative is multiple rocket pods, maybe napalm on the base.
This is a basic 'go in and wreck shit' mission. Do it low and fast, and not much can go wrong.
Do this ahead of the strike on the bunker, so that the confusion (and panic) can spread and reaction forces can move there (and away from your target area)
Downside is that this will alert the defenders, but when they're expecting an attack anyway you're not losing much.

The bunker. . .this is where you have to use a little high tech. Laser-guided penetrator bombs, or you're not getting anywhere. That means a plane with a laser target designator and the actual munitions have to be available. If you can do that, by all means go for it.

The REAL problem is going to be AAA batteries and MANPADS along the evac route.
Even an old ZU-23-2 can really ruin a Helo's day.
No idea how to suppress those without carpet-bombing or going batshit insane aka NAPALM EVERWHERE.

Define "better". In what terms, exactly?

Also you're better of waiting till sukhoi gets back and asking her. She is literally an encyclopaedia of useless plane trivia.

Better in a different areas I guess...

    Which is better in:
    -Low observability

And I know about Sukhoi, but I figured I'd just toss the question out there seeing as I have no idea when she'll be on and IIRC she's in a different time zone (Canada vs. Western Europe)

Eurofighter Typhoon is generally considered the better aircraft. It has less compromises since it's aimed at being one thing only, vs the Rafale which was designed to fit the requirements of both the navy and the Air Force. The Eurofighter tends to have a better loadout, and has better engines, supercruise, turning, etc.

However, the Rafale is significantly cheaper than the Eurofighter.

I guess, yeah. Or just a small, agile short-range AAM with a "first stage" for long-burn flight and longrange guidance?

First stage takes the missile towards the target at high speeds from fucking miles away, then releases. Second stage separates and hunts down the target at close range.
    >> Fligh/tg/uy !!USvlahNxTB4 07/19/10(Mon)10:57 No.11222807
Rafale also has a higher payload by 4500 lbs IIRC

But yeah, in terms of thrust and thrust to weight and whatnot, Eurofighter wins.

I am curious to find out more about that whole mysterious Spectra system the Rafale is toting though...

Well, even if it's not as good as, say, a Typhoon, it's still a pretty damn good jet with a good payload and carrier capability.

Might as well keep it around, they're not likely to get their hands on anything (much) better anytime soon, aside from maybe a late model Flanker

Just to throw out an idea:

Mesurado Bridge and and Providence Bridge. They're right next to the command bunker and the primary target. Ask the French wether those bridges are expendable. If they aren't, fuck the army base. Just bomb these two and anyone trying to get to the primary target from that base has to do a fucking ~40 mile detour.

In that case, you can come in from the waterfront, put 1-2 Exocets into that boat and then just go to town on SAM sites and the command bunker and bridges without caring about the base.
