You take your seat, finding that it molds instantly to your frame, despite appearing to be nothing more than a crude construction of common stone. A jolt runs up your spine, an unpleasant sensation that numbs your fingers. The displays all blink in unison, running through yet another activation program that seems to take forever. You notice that there don't seem to be any command panels in this room; everything is self-contained. Korus watches patiently behind you, humming softly.
A tone sounds, and all at once, the room lights up, sweeping the machines with bright white beams that settle in quickly, like spotlights finding their mark. A whirring, clicking noise builds beneath the floor, accompanying the crackling whine of the projectors. Multicolored holograms blossom in front of you, filling your vision with schematics and pages upon pages of text. You hear a voice emanate from the center of the room.
“Welcome. Kharok Five is now online. All processes will be returned to function shortly. Please wait.” For a moment, the projections pause, becoming an endless pattern of error codes, but they resume right after, leaving you to wonder if you saw anything at all.
A different voice, gruff and unfriendly, comes through speakers just behind your station.
“That's it! You're in! I don't know who the hell you are, but you've just saved the whole damn network. You see that self-destruct timer on your right side? Punch it, and get as far away as you can. This our only chance. Don't-” it cuts off.
The two security golems behind you speak in unison.
“ONE. GRANT ME PERMISSION TO ACCESS THE PRIMARY CODES. I CANNOT IMPLEMENT FINAL REPAIRS UNTIL YOU DO SO.” |
