Last Episode on LQ we negotiated with Rat people and wrote letters wooing our fair lady.

After the end of the negotiations with the Virmen, some peasants have noted that virmen sightings around the edges of the swamps have gone up. However, they are just this - sightings, and no effort to communicate has yet been made.

Starting with a new month to keep things moving
    >> Anonymous 06/28/10(Mon)05:05 No.10793461
We should expect them to go up, as we have them patrolling the swamps. Here's hoping we can get some to agree to non-KILLAN work, as having a Virmen digging team would help with draining the swamp.

    Also, FUCK YES LORD QUEST.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/10(Mon)05:06 No.10793483
This is the first time since February that I have been to a Lord Quest. We were just talking about when we'd get a new one, too!

Did you see the heraldry that got posted, Quest Lord?

They'll betray us in the end. It is the Virmen way. But for now lets approach this cautiously and see if we can't get this >>10793461

QUEST LORD, CAN YOU POST AN EMAIL/BLOG/TWITTER FOR US SO WE HAVE SOME WAY OF ASKING WHEN THE NEXT ONE IS?

ALSO, UNLESS YOUR NEXT POSTS PROVE ME WRONG, MIGHT BE HIGH TIME TO START TRIMMING BACK ON THE NUMBERS.

Sorry for the caps, but I've been meaning to say that for ages now. Just never been around for a thread.

Are we STILL not selling excess lumber, just generating it every month and throwing it down a hole? I thought I said something about that THREE MONTHS AGO?

Hey Quest Lord, it's the guy who made the crests here. I also made something I think you'll like. It took me forever to comb through all the archives for pertinent information. It's an information chart to help new players and to be used as reference in case people forget a name or person.

How about at least ten of those peasants go into the militia. Also I have a question, what happened to the Sheriff we had way back when? Did he die? I combing back through the archives I don't seem to remember seeing him active since around thread four. Same deal with our ugly maid girl.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 06/28/10(Mon)05:47 No.10794009
In other news, the carpenters have finished furnishing all the bedrooms to a +Very Good+ quality. They can't do more then this as far as furnishing the rooms and patching them up goes. You have 13 very good rooms.

He's just a man at arms. Since Leold took over the training etc. of the men at arms, he's been covering the Sheriff's duties, as the sheriff was just a nominal leader of the men at arms.

Ugly maid is still around hypothetically. I'd forgotten her, but as she isn't really achieving anything of note she's off the spreadsheets.

Did we ever get that wheel done? If so, we need to get one of the smiths working on a screw pump.

It's no castle, but the keep itself is *presentable*. Nothing to gloat over or be proud of, but most nobles put up with much worse while travelling, etc. You're not going to host a ball or a gala, but if you want to host a tourny you won't be embarrassed. The outer walls are little more then ruins, but in a time and place of relative peace walls are just a status symbol.

Most lords would consider it rustic and rural, and some might talk of doing it rough, but they would live with much worse en route to here.

Saw mill would be a post-wheel priority.

Can we power a sawmill, a smithy, a granary, AND pumps off one wheel, or do we need another?

    >>10794154
I'm thinking a market square would be a nice next step. Bring in additional revenue, have goods we can choose from without going out or relying on Urist for...

We have 2 wells, right? So that shouldn't be a priority?
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 06/28/10(Mon)06:05 No.10794213
    >>10794108
No can do. Smiths will ask for more apprentices when they can, guild regulations mean that they can't have more jr apprentices then sr apprentices, and they can't have more sr apprentices then full smiths.

    >>10794159
Next step would be to let the architect and masons you took on for a year keep working on the keep. They've been fixing stuff up in the upper keep, that isn't a hazard, but aren't yet rooms. I need to let my spreadsheet cover more of the keep then lodgings, until then you're fine. I plan on releasing that when they're done, all at once.

It's not in any particular order of priority just a smattering of ideas that have been tossed around in the past. Also, do we still have the dragon's head in our possession/is it under the "dragon bits" portion of our inventory? We need to mount that thing in a bad ass fashion if we do.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/10(Mon)06:08 No.10794259
    >>10794213

Understood and understood. So it's just going to keep getting better with time.

    >>10794225

Yeah, but I'm saying that mill would be near the top of the list for priorities, as we can see immediate returns from that, especially if it's powered by the / a wheel.

Pretty sure we had that taxidermied, and it's already hanging on a wall in proper badass fashion.

Hooking up a building to the waterwheel will include the time spent adding infrastructure, etc. so you can. I'm yet to make a clear rule on How much a waterwheel can power, but I'm likely going to cap it at 3 buildings powered by each wheel, before you need to build a new wheel.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/10(Mon)06:09 No.10794279
    >>10794213
Can we have some of those spare peasants speed up the architect's/masons' work by acting as basic laborers?

I'd say we could spare at least 5-6 of them for that.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/10(Mon)06:10 No.10794299
Let's have the Dragon's head (which I'm sure we've preserved as best we can) mounted in the dining hall of our keep. Show it off when we have people visit.

Which we need to do soon. If not for a tournament, at least invite Sheff up to visit. Maybe he'd bring Sarah with him. Hrmm.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/10(Mon)06:10 No.10794300

Okay, then we need to get working on infrastructure. The smithy and the granary need it now, to power the mill and the forge. So do we start work on pumps, or on a sawmill? Because we'll need another wheel after that.

    OK

LETS MAKE A LIST OF OUR PROJECTS

    - WATER WHEEL FOR SAWMILL/BLACKSMITH/GRANERY
    - FIX UP OUR KEEP
    - WALLS?
    - WATCH TOWERS?
    - MARKET SQUARE (not necessarily a major project. A few sturdy stalls, an area partitioned off, simple enough).
    - TOURNAMENT AREA (should probably wait until we've decided we're doing well enough to host a tournament)

Working on it already, I think
    >- FIX UP OUR KEEP
Working on that too, same time
    >- WALLS?
    This can wait.
    >- WATCH TOWERS?
This can too. Easier to invest in spies.
    >- MARKET SQUARE (not necessarily a major project. A few sturdy stalls, an area partitioned off, simple enough).
Let's make this a priority. A tavern too, perhaps. Traffic brings in money.
    >- TOURNAMENT AREA (should probably wait until we've decided we're doing well enough to host a tournament)
Yeah, let's wait until we need it. Shouldn't take long.

Wheel's done. Just needs hookups to the granary and smithy. Keep renovation will take care of itself. A market square is a worthwhile project.

Again, do we start a sawmill now, or do we do pumps, then another wheel, THEN a sawmill? Which is more important, farmland or easier lumber rendering?

Farmland also gets us fewer swamp issues with trolls and virmen (these seem to be the REAL problem in the swamps; I hope our diplomatic actions last thread may bear fruit). BUT we'll have longer to travel for peat if the swamp gets drained--not that it's worth anything right now anyways.

It's a tossup, I'd say whichever is easier. Barring that, pumps.

    Pic related.

Urist returns home, after a sucessful trading venture. 3 plots of sourberry seeds and 30 gold up (was happening anyway) he also has brought a rather excited if intoxicated dwarf up with him. The new dwarf introduces himself as Bartgebräu-Axt-Bier, but says you can call him Barty Brew. He offers to work for you in the capacity of brewer, as he has been expelled from the mountainhome as a journyman after an incident with his new experimental beer using mad cap mushrooms and biting fungus. He can only return if and when he creates a masterpeice of a quality to impress the brewmasters, and his untraditional brewing methods aren't approved of.

He's rather unimpressed with the currant setup, but hastily notes that it's probably impressive for human beer-making in an effort to not be too impolite. He's brought his own still, and says he can work for you in one of two capacities. You could pay him to purchase ingredients, and he could work separately to your brewers, and create a small amount of his alcohols each month, OR he could come on board as an advisor, and help the brewers you have keep doing what they're doing now.

In other news, A letter from a certain Sheff Lady has arrived.

    "Dearest Thom

I have missed you ever so, the halls of Sheff Manor seem empty to me now without you and your men bustling about. It’s odd, even if you were largely to busy pursuing my captors, you always did find some time to set aside for me. But enough of my womanly prattle, and to more important matters.

Your experiments intrigue me, I myself have been questioning Peter Glenn’s treatise on essence, particularly, that of there being 8 related forms. I think that Hipposatle’s theory of four is much more likely, even if it is largely based in secular and religious theory. I’m unsure as to how to test this however, as both theories explain any experiments within my ability to perform.

In other news, Father has negotiated peace with Ell. However Aroheff has seen fit to add a new trading agreement that greatly favours father to his agenda, and sees himself as making a lucky escape for his son’s behaviour. Father also agreed to keep the matter out of the courts, but has gained a sizable portion of Ell’s lumber exports, and Snyv’s operatives have been put to death. I doubt Snyv will play a prominent role in politics again for quite some time now, he is on the verge of losing his right to inherit.

I hope all is well, and I wish to see you soon.

Fast work with a translator is how I got it.

The incident with Biting Fungus is notable because it is the first time that a dwarven spirit still, rune-enhanced to survive the potent brews of the dwarves, has exploded in so spectacular a blast. Putting a fungus that extrudes electricity as a defence mechinism into a highly flamamble mixt was poorly thought out, and although he has learned more caution, his casting out of the mountainhome hasn't curbed his enthusiasm for making the most volatile and destructive brews known to dwarfkind . . .

Sure, send him an invitation, but request that he reply with the date if attending. That gives us enough time to get off another reply confirming as well as giving our masons more time to spiffy up the place.

Also, a letter to Sarah stating that her absence from our daily life is also noted, and that we seem to have hit a momentary dead end on the alchemy front, as well as soliciting her thoughts.

Yeah, it's alchemical theory pertaining to elements. It's basically quantam alchemy or alchemical philosophers, as it's area that is all thoery, but no-one knows how to test. Often discussed, but nothing is ever proven.

    Bamp!

Hippostotle is the father of Alchemical Philosophy, and although Alchemical Philosophy of the time bares little if any similarities to now, his theories are often held as the closest thing to fact in areas where facts aren't forthcoming. Most of his research comes form religious and logical reasoning, rather then modern scientific alchemical methods.

    +1 alchemy score.

I would suggest ways to test it if I knew anything about the laws of alchemy in this world. Very few things would be truly untestable from what you have said about alchemy so far. It simply isn't advanced enough to have purely theoretical approaches yet. What elements are being talked about and why the difference of opinion?

Back in the real world we didn't get into truly theoretical physics until around the last century. Arguably the last 50 years.

Hipposatle theories that there are 4 material elements, to do with alchemy, and 4 metaphysical elements, that alchemy doesn't deal with.

Peter Glenn thinks that there are 8 material elements, the original four, and ones for lighting, cold, magma and clouds. He proposes an alchemical wheel with these 8 spokes being the points of reference.

    Interesting.

Onward with the timeskip; I'll theorize on elements more when we're not busy doing.

I'm also working on Peter Glenn. So far, it's a motoring school, a filmmaker, and an outdoors supply store.

    >>10795155
Well this would be easy to test. For cold all we need to do is conduct the exact same experiments at varying temps. I would suggest maybe fifteen plot points as a base graph with a separation interval of 5 degrees, mostly due to the inaccurate temperature measurement abilities of the time period.

Cloud element can be tested by setting up near the swamps/river during various foggy mornings and performing the same experiment multiple times in varying degrees of thickness, from sunny to pea soup.

Magma and lightning testing varies based on how much our good lord knows about these things and if electricity is known to be generated.

The smith notes that just as much work would go into a lower quality sword, because he doesn't want his smiths to learn bad habits (and I'm NOT keeping track of more different weapon types then I need to). That said, he can make sure that the worst of the bunch are selected to trade, etc.

It turns out that you can claim the title and name, but marienburg is taken, much as suspected. Howevr to claim the title, you must advertise you have the title in the royal records, and have the news spread across the land (smyatt has taken care of this) and wait a year for a surviving heir to appear.

The horticulturalist (Wrigley Spectre) is slowly progressing on his research. For the record, he's given you one bonus, thus far.

Each plot of sourberries will make 2 units of sourwine, or make 1 unit of food. Each plot takes 1 peasant. Can skip yield in order to tripple the number of plots in a month, as opposed to just doubling it.

Hey guys, we've been courting Sarah for like over a year now. Both Lord Sheff and Sarah are extremely favorable with regards to the idea of a marriage, if not actively pursuing it.

I'm thinking it's about time to close in for the kill. I mean, really, how long are we planning to court here?

Is Sourwine particularly valuable or would it just be for domestic consumption?

I was thinking by the end of the year when the keep is fixed. We've yet to buy a wedding ring anyway, I'm thinking something nice using our families respective stones and getting it enchanted by Wirt.

Some sort of protective runes on the wedding band would likely be a good idea considering our... lifestyle.

How much would an extremely nice wedding ring with house stones and runes and shit cost anyway? We need to see the runesmith soon.

You've only been formally courting her since last time you were down there. I thought fa/tg/uys took it slow in real life, but oh god. :P Being a whole nation away in a time before the car might not help the pace of it all though.

Then let's dedicate peasants to that, with the intent being sourwine.

    >>10796174

I was thinking we could discuss it with Sheff if/when he comes to visit, and set a date then. I like the ring idea.

Depends on how wealthy the giver is really. Tradition varies around the place, depending on doweries, bride prices, etc. Often rings are family heirlooms, and a family like yours likely has a stash of a few of them kicking about.

Depends on what the family has. You've never given it overmuch attention. But as a second son, you basically get a free pick once your older bro is married, or any ring he'll give you if not. As you get on well enough, it's likely he'll give you your due at the very least.

Put them into training with DOOBS to become militia. Tell him that you will want some patrolmen for the road eventually, and to make sure they are familiar with that area and the various unique hazards associated with roadside brigands and highway defense.

Begin drawing up plans for an Inn on the road, and let's have the builders start work on it next.

Well, before we actually ask for her hand we need to know what the marriage rituals are. Are there engagement rings? How long before the ceremony is conducted? Will we have time to write to our brother and select a ring before it's time for wedding bells? Are we supposed to hold the wedding at our estate or in Sekay? Things like that.

Write to our brother and tell him we're in the market for a wedding ring, and ask him to send the three best rings that he himself will not be using for us to pick from. Also invite him to the wedding, I want to meet this guy and see him and DOOBS fight.

Depends on the patron gods of the lucky couple (or unlucky couple with certain gods). Some allow sex before marriage, some demand it, some require a lengthy engagement, some say that they must marry within a year of meeting, etc. Byron is fairly laid back, is fine with you getting some pussy as long as you're not being unfaithful to another (although convincing a lady to be unfaithful is ok, as long as you don't know/like the husband). The Sheff Ancestors. . . . you're unsure about.

From what you remember, Tom would Rip DOOOBS! apart. DOOOBS in a tallented fighter, but your brother makes most of his cash and fame fighting. Later this year he intends to compete in the crown tourney to become the champion of the realm. He's currently the Champion of the Westerlands, a title which means he gets to stand in for the old Earl in any duels of honour. Since he became champion, there has been 1 challenge, on his first day. After that, none for three years.

It was just a joke, guy. He has been here before when it was worse and still is fine with us marrying her. If anything he will be impressed with all the work we've done so far, we have been moving at lightspeed on our road to Dukedom considering the utter dearth of manpower we have.
