    Ducky here with Colonial Quest Part VI

    Previous quest: cant, sup/tg/ down.

    Last year we delt with bandits, filth, dissent as well as defeated the single largest assembled Orc force in recorded history, with our expeditionary force only just arriving back from their victory with their dead, wounded and the spoils of war (3 units of gold and 100 muskets)

    At the start of this year, people are mostly happy and find it nice to see that trade vessels occasionally use our port as a 'refueling' point on their journeys. But ever since the arena was constructed in Normandy, the crime rate has shot right up.

    A grand feast was held in celebration as well as mourning this month. It started with the bodies of the dead being burnt by the seashore, into the embrace of the holy mother and an hour long prayer session, followed by the grand feast in the town center, during which Captain Petrovski was awarded another medal for his courage and ability to stand fast against such a greater force, along with the baron

    The bell has finally been finished and mounted in serenity's church, and wrong out for an hour after the feast, much to the dissent of our hung over citizens but appreciate the gesture anyway. Finally, the Eversor has returned with its cargo, including its Eccentric, awfully annoying Goblin captain we hired.

    Seconding this, load up with a half a unit of stone. See what we can get for in terms of clothes and wine. I'm thinking we get a small supply of the wine and try to recreate it ourselves and mostly ask for fine clothes for our citizens. The people should be really clean considering all the bathhouses and the sewage system. If we get them dressed nicely we might just become the cleanest colony in these parts.

    Setting off in a Medium transport and the 'Vera' as an escort, we arrive at the Bernician colony within a few days. The Duke, Duchess and the Hussar guards are welcomed by the town governer who holds them for a ball in his Palace. They are expected to return next month.

    In other news, while Baron Kaufmann manages the management of the settlements, a textile mill has been set up, allowing us a small income of low grade clothing.

    After trading 50 muskets and a unit of gold, we've been able to prevent disaster in our colony by cutting down rations to half and importing foreign grain. This has signifigantly lowered moral, but not as much as having no food at all

    In addition, the Eversor has arrived in europa to find a surprise awaiting in the docks. One of the Barons Elder daughters was awaiting the Eversor, demanding to be let onboard, going to the point of even slapping one of the sailors with the back of her hand.

    Wait a minute. If you guys are having food issues and you don't have any food preservation materials.. that's a big part of your problem. Find ways to smoke, salt, pickle, brine, or ferment just about everything - milk turns into either butter, cheese, or buttermilk, butter has a lot of salt in it to keep it from spoiling so fast, vegetables, fruits, and eggs can be pickled, you can cook foods in fats or honey or sugar, then storing it for a slightly longer time...

    The best possible way to do this would be to have a magical type of some sort create a very cold room where food could be stored, but the actual question that should be asked is 'Does your civilization know that freezing their food keeps it from spoiling as fast?' (Not to mention 'Do we know that sort of magic/magic at all?')

    Construction continues on our Frigate, with only one month away from its completion, serenity is becoming a naval power among the colonies.

    Several smoking sheds were built in serenity this month, increasing the length of time we can store food and the amount.

    Another bandit attack occured today, this time on the ranch. Several cows were herded out by several men in the middle of the night. Several ranchers noticed this and drove off the bandits, but weren't able to retrieve the cattle.

    Several scouting parties were sent out into the woods and eventually discovered the bandits. After a quick stand off, the 6 tiefling men from a dorovan settlement surrendered and have been taken in.

    In slightly odd news today, there was a rather interesting brawl in the town today. It seems That Baron Kaufmanns daughter, Marie kaufmann, stowed away onboard the ship, and during the voyage subdued Captain Alessandro, taking control of the ship.

    When she arrived in port she marched off in full armor into town, yelling out for 'the dog of a man' Kaufmann. Eventually the Baron exited the keep to meet his daughter, where a verbal battle quickly escilated into a full on brawl as Marie Backhanded the baron.

    Lasting a full 20 minutes, the two threw punches back and forth at each other, Marie fighting like a man and the Baron treating her like one. Eventually the Baron had to be pulled off his daughter as he had clearly won the fight and was pounding her head into the muddy ground.

    When asked about what to do with his daughter, he said that she was no longer his daughter and did not care if she stayed or was sent away.

    After settling things between Marie Kaufmann and Wilhelm Kaufmann, to a degree, she has been inducted into the 1st colonial and is being stationed in Normandy.

    Our police force has begun to do its job as the simple induction of it has caused crime rates to drop signifigantly, most notably in normandy. A small jail and training center has been set up in Serenity where another 10 men are in training to be a police officer

    Grim news this month

    Early on this week, a patrol to the south east went missing, and at the same time one of the signal fires on the watchtowers was lite. When a 10 man forces reached it, the garrison of the watchtower told of how there is a herd of at least 20 hippodiles in the region. that passed straight by their watch tower and into the river serenity.

    As panic continues, regular patrols were made on horse back up the river serenity, looking out for any of the beasts, but it wasn't as simple as that.

    On the second week, the hippodiles emerged into serenity out of the river itself while the majority of the men were off on patrols. Panic erupted with people running in terror to their homes, barricading themselves in while the few defenders in town went to try and battle the beasts. First on the scene was a small militia detachment of 7 men and a policeman, who proceeded to fire a volley at a group of 3 eating fish from a market stall. One of the beasts fell, the the thick skin of the other two helped to slow down the rounds that did hit, and they charged into the small group, killing most of them with one the officer and 1 militiaman making it to safety.

    A hunter positioned himself in the church tower taking the occasional potshots at them, not killing any but was able to draw their attention to around the church. A small force assembled to the east side of town after about an hour. a total of 40 men, mostly militia and led by baron kaufmann marched into the town and set up a firing line as he went out to lure them in, which did not take long.

    Running back to the line and ducking, the line opened fire at the attacking hippodiles, able to kill just 4 or the 7 attackers, the rest breaking into the line, slaughtering many of the men before any could escape. The baron lead his men back to the Fort with the few men who had found refuge inside covering them, bringing down 2 more of the beasts.

    The situation was bad. Captain Petrovski had the majority of the towns garrison were 20km south of the town searching for the beasts where they had been seen, and even with the signal flares egnited it'd take them 5 hours to return. The remains of the garrison were hiding in various buildings and the dukes fort, taking pot shots at the beasts whenever one passed by. It was at this time that Marie Kaufman Marched into town with 4 of the garrison of Normandy on horse back. Armed with just a pistol, musket and PollAxe

    Using the other Militia men to cover her, over the period of an hour she went over a constant pattern of advancing, firing a round with her musket, retreating to the militiamen on horse back and finishing whatever Hippodile with either her pistol or pollaxe before reloading a repeating. Over time she slowly wore down the amount of hippodiles in the town, despite being thrown off her horse twice and even being caught in the jaws of one, her armor the only thing preventing her from getting crushed.

    By time there was only 3 left in the town they retreated into the waters and back up stream.

    I plan to put a fair amount of animals in, including the hippodile, so the colonists would need to stay on their toes. I didn't expect people to like them so much, though.

    Most animals are either real or fictional, but existing fictional creatures, hippodile is likely to be the only original creation when it comes to land fauna.
