You breathe in the stale, static air. The library is quiet, calm, as it has always been, and will ever be.
You sit back in the strange metal chair. It's not incredibly uncomfortable, but that's alright. Nearby, Ramiel lounges with his back against a wall, wings splayed out behind him.
You page lazily through the sheets in front of you. Something, something...John Dee...who can be bothered with reading? You sigh, tossing the papers aside, watching bemusedly as they spread across the table.
"We need to leave," your blood starts up again. "You have to listen to me, Helen...HELEN!"
You wish it would stop with that god damned racket. Always going on about this or that thing you have to do. What a bossy know-it-all.

Clara sits on a nearby set of stairs, body slumped over, eyes gazing about slowly. You smile slightly; she almost looks like she could be asleep. But that's silly. Robots can't sleep. How long as she been like that?
How long have you been like this?
You try to remember...there were some papers...ah, never mind. It probably isn't important.
"God DAMN it Helen, you need to get up! You need to move! We need to leave this place!"
"Ugh, shut up..." you grumble, slouching lower in the chair. The sun casts strange shadows as it enters through the open door and curiously-shaped windows.

(If you've ever emailed me, I've emailed you. If not, the long and short is my computer was fucked up for the duration of the weekend. Thanks, power surges)

Andre shambles in, all four arms hanging limply. He sighs from the exertion of walking, sinking to his knees and then to a crawl before coming to rest face-down on the ground.
"Why are we...something.....can't.....13..." he says. You wave him off. What does any of that even mean?
"Let's see...if I can get this to work again..." your blood says. You can feel a strange stirring under your skin. Your arms are lifted like they're on puppet strings.
"Get...UP!" your blood commands. You resist sullenly, but your blood pulls you upwards, trying to force you to your feet. You are unprepared, and tilt forward, smashing your face on the table in front of you.

"Urg, you stupid...Garfield!" You snap out of your self-pitying complaints, sitting straight upright. A shroud is lifted from your mind like a veil, though you can feel it circling you like a shark, billowing against your mind like the curtains of an open window.
"Garfield?" you say, trying to clear your head.
"Oh thank whatever gods don't want us dead," Garfield breathes a sigh of relief.
You remember everything now; encountering the alien and horrifying Subject 06, feeling your cares slip away...not a euphoria so much as an apathy. And then...oh no.

"Ramiel!" you shout. "Ramiel!" elsewhere, you feel the atmosphere changing, like a shift in the wind.
The angelic man looks up at you, wings flexing slowly.
    "Hrm...?" he says.
"Get up! All of you, get up! We need to get out of here!"
Clara slumps back, laying down uncomfortably on the stairs themselves.
"Not...yet..." she says, covering her eyes.
Andre drags himself to his hands and knees, moving like a slug.
"Yes..." he says slowly. "That's what....yes!"

"Yeah, we've all been spaced out like this for...well hopefully not for too long. Try to get Ramiel up," you say. He nods, struggling over to the angel.
You walk over towards Clara, but are stopped by a soreness all over your body. You realize that your flesh has been singed, tender and pink.
"It's been so long since we've eaten..." Garfield says. "I've...lost control a few times."
Ignoring the pain you reach Clara, trying to get her to her feet. She's significantly heavier than she looks, but you manage to pivot her forward.
    "No..." she murmurs. "Go 'way..."
"I'm sorry, Clara," you say, and slap her full in the face.
She gasps after a few seconds, the sound of the contact still echoing in the vaulted chambers.
"Ow...Miss Helen, why would..." she trails off, her eyes going wide, then darting around the room like a frightened deer, memories falling into place, systems clearing out whatever foreign clutter has settled over you all.
"The thing...that thing in there," she says pointing towards one of the hallways. "We need to leave, while we have a chance."

Looking around at the shelves, you spot some promising thick tomes. Meanwhile, behind you, you hear a sound like wet, labored breathing, echoing all through the still air around you. Despite being well-lit, the library is an eerie place, and you pile several books onto your arms. None are made of iron plates, but perhaps they can still hold some potent magic or ancient secret that could win the day, if discovered. Books in hand, you motion to the others.
    "Let's go."
You don't need to tell anyone twice. You descend the stairs, legs feeling like slabs of stone. You turn back to look at the library, spires rising like crooked fingers against the void all around you. Off to the side, you can see the luminous bleeding wound in the sky, Mars, and its two moons.
Stumbling and trying not to break into a panicked dash, you reach the shores of the lake, still with crystalline drops suspended in air. Looking around with a growing sense of dread, you scan the lakeshore's immaculate dusty beach.
"Where...where are the spiders?" Clara asks, forcing all your fears into reality.

Behind you, in the library, there is a low booming tone like the sounding of some ancient battered gong. The ground around you trembles slightly, and you hear the peculiar sound of soft rain as the suspended crystals begin falling back to the lake surface.

Garfield swims over your skin as your armor seals you off from the world. Looking at the library, you can see the shadows within it growing, fighting back the encroaching sunlight, enshrouding the perpetual wispy dawn that hangs over the library, the windows and doors darkening like snuffed candles.

"Where are the spiders?!" Clara repeats, somewhat more frantic. Her arm snaps open, railgun humming. Though obviously shaken, she moves to stand by you, young-looking face scowling seriously. You hear Andre cocking his weapons.
That's not all you hear. The gonging sounds again, deep within the library's spacious and acoustically gifted halls. The shadows at the door seem to be trying to grow their way out like vines.
But that's not all you hear either. An arpeggio, ending in a strange dissonant note, sounds from nearby, though you can see no violin, nor any player.

The blackness at the library door begins spilling out, crawling like thick oil across the pristine dusts of this spaceborne rock. Like your hidden and vague memories of the surface of that inky void within the library's vaults, this spreading sea of night reflects no light, giving the appearance of a great spreading mouth devouring and extinguishing the very ground.

Several more notes are plucked out on that phantom fiddle, before the dissonant, foreign, almost obscene-sounding sawing of some archaic bow begins again. The very air near you seems to shimmer, as though with heat, before opening up abruptly like a tear in paper. The four of you jump back towards the lake that still chimes with the falling crystal droplets.
Through the tear you see a curtain-like shadow of darkness that bristles with otherworldly colors that seem ready to burst forth at any provocation, the fiddling spilling forth from this ragged maw in space like words from a speaker's lips.
Like stepping through a door, a haggard-looking man strides out of this gape, fiddle at this shoulder, notes fading away as the gap closes behind him like a curtain.
He appears to be in his sixties, at least, with a wrinkled face and watery eyes that take you in with a slight nod of his head. Meanwhile the gonging begins again, double-time; you can no longer see the library through the encroaching blackness.

"Who...who are you?" Ramiel manages to say.

"Is there any way you could help us?" you continue, nervously watching the growing shadow. Strands of it seem to be lashing out like whips or fingers, trying to taste the air, to blanket the very medium of existence in lightless dark.
Eric Zann nods brightly, returning the violin to his shoulder and striking a horrific tone, immediately whirling into a foreign cascading scale. It is grating to your ears, but you can see the air around you start to shimmer. The inky black, meanwhile, has touched the surface of the lake, where it spreads like black powder introduced to a match, the vast shores of the once-beautiful crystalline mirror soon turning to a gobbling maelstrom seeking to devour all light.

You cling to your fervor, your drive, thinking intensely of Nyarlathotep, of 13, of the many shadows plaguing earth. Now is not the time for rest.
"NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR REST!" you shout to the others, barely audible over the growing shrieks of the violin. You step back, finding that your feet had wandered towards the library and that simmering pool of liquid hate. Looking upon it, you know that to enter it is to enter oblivion.
The world around you seems to bubble and distort like film held to a flame. You can hear nothing, save for Zann's hideous music. You can feel nothing, save the tugging upon your flesh like the suckling mouths of a million ticks. Squinting, you can see the world itself tearing apart around you, whorling into an abyss of seething color while Zann stands like a rock in the midst of the chaos, eyes closed, muttering soundless words to himself as he expertly plays the beastly devil-music fueling whatever dire passage you are slipping towards.

You catch a final glimpse of the nightmare sea, bubbling with impotent rage as you are swirled away as though through the neck of a bottle. You hear the foul gonging of the library's depths reach a fever pitch, before you hear nothing more.

Amid the swirling patterns and silky abyssal winds you hear the music of Eric Zann (teehee, namedrop) still modulating upon soft low tones, occasionally spiking upwards towards some unseen pitch beyond the ken of human musical theory. Reaching out in the darkness, you can feel the forms of your comrades around you, flitting clouds of color passing betwixt and around you like schools of cosmic fish. You realize that you have not been breathing for some time. Your efforts to fill your lungs with air bear no fruit. A small hand finds yours in the darkness, and the chill grasp of Clara's fingers intertwines with your own. Choking, you stumble to your knees, grasping at the child-construct in a protective embrace, fighting to maintain your consciousness.

    >Okay, that too.

You taste Garfield on your teeth as the swimming void closes in around you, and the volume of Zann's fiddle climbs once more. Points of white light, like a field of stars, begin to perforate the soft and flowing darkness, holes punched in the smothering blanket of your interspatial conveyance.
As you feel your head about to crack under its own pressure, the holes widen, expanding like irises, each one leading to the same vista. You feel yourself rushing in every direction simultaneously, your brain scrambling to make sense of the hellish pastiche of image and color it sees. You feel your stomach turn over, and you hear yourself retch, before everything spins away for a moment.
You open your eyes frantically, and almost immediately. You are on your knees, on the earthy Canadian dirt of the airstrip, staring at a puddle of your own bile and acid. Looking around you can see that several of the hangars have collapsed, and one of the planes is in several pieces. Your other companions are strewn about, having exited the abyssal passage quite awkwardly. Clara is next to you, thankfully free from your vertigo-spawned upheaval, and only Zann himself stands, steady as a sailor, calmly tucking his violin under his arm.

Well, we know that only thing that can stop Nylaratotep is Azreal, or whatever that guys name is. The one who's dreaming of the universe. Which is remarkably similar to one of the Hindu gods, Branham, sleeping god who dreams the universe. Though he's generally much more benevolent than any of Lovecraft's creations.

But I digress. If we're part of a part of the afterimage of his looking bleary-eyed at the Earth, then we're the closest thing that can stop Nylarathotep, and presumably compared to that taking down 13 would be easy. So I say we go for 13, who's causing the most observable damage, and then try to find Arkham/Nylarathotep.

Your eyes nearly roll back in your head as you sate your lust for flesh, body shivering as it seethes all the nourishment from the great beasts.

When you return to camp, feeling refreshed, if still exhausted, the group is gathered on the open airstrip, talking amongst themselves. They stop to note your return.
"As I was saying," Creed continues when you have joined the circle. "Only a few hours after you left, 96 dropped the whole charade. Seems the real reason it let you drift off to space was to leave you there to rot. It attacked with a bunch more of it's...brood-whatevers, and this," he gestures to the damage done. I'm not one for fancy speeches, but I feel I need to say something here. What we are about to do is likely to kill all of us. Some of us might not come back from this, but regardless of who dies, who lives, who keeps their sanity, and who loses themselves, we must win. We will win. What we are fighting does what it does for reasons of no importance. If this planet is gone what do they lose? A plaything, a speck of dust? If we lose, we lose this miserable dirtball we call home, the only one we got. And if I die fighting I'm at least die knowing that everyone else lives on.

Look to each in turn, recalling memories and the wild adventure.

"As our defacto leader, remember this: Tomorrow, we fight for the life of this planet. Our planet. Perhaps a place we can settle into permanently, and create a new home. We fight a terrible being largely beyond comprehension, and we're not well-regarded. Time and space itself may buckle during this fight. But remember!"

    Pause.

"Chrono proved that if you hit an elder god enough times it falls down. Also that it's actually a turnip. Uh. I'm getting distracted. First, we need to write up a plan, then get some sleep for tomorrow."

I'm not one for fancy speeches," you begin, stooping near the fire, looking from one pair of eyes to the next, "but I feel I need to say something here. What we are about to do is likely to kill all of us. Some of us might not come back from this, but regardless of who dies, who lives, who keeps their sanity, and who loses themselves, we must win." You pound a fist against a palm for emphasis. "We will win. What we are fighting does what it does for reasons of no importance. If this planet is gone what do they lose? A plaything, a speck of dust? If we lose," you continue, scooping up a handful of dark Canadian soil and letting it drizzle away into the consuming flames, "We lose this miserable dirtball we call home, the only one we got. And if I die fighting I'm at least die knowing that everyone else lives on."
"I did not ask to lead," you say, spreading your arms and casting your gaze about once again. "But as the one who leads you I say tomorrow we fight. For this planet. For OUR planet. Time and space itself may buckle during this fight. But remember!"
You pause; it seems the eyes of the world are upon you.

We are not an army. An army is a group of people who come together for their own reasons to die for someone else's. What we are is a bunch of freaks who spent most of our lives locked up with needles in our arms and tubes up our noses so that some asshole could fuck things up so bad that only the freaks could fix it, and unlike an army, we have only one reason to fight. We're going to save the one thing that all beings love... being. When we go out there tomorrow, we will fight for all that is and ever was and ever may be. What better cause? How could any sacrifice be more noble?

We were born freaks, we will live for a few brief moments as legends.

You thrust your fist over the flames, and the others stand to join you. The heat laps at your arms, but you stand fast, and bump the shit out of those knucks.

You awake in the early morning to the arrival of a plane on the small runway. Assault rifles are there a-plenty, and another anti-materials rifle for Clara. Included is a sealed metal box bearing the Arkham logo. Opening it reveals the shifting sides of a hedron, along with a handwritten note.

"I heard you were still alive, and that 54 was gathering supplies for you, so I made sure this found its way on board. Make sure you don't cost me my job for nothing. I'll be waiting for you

    >34
As Ramiel makes his pass, 13's spinal cord abruptly grows out of the stump of it's neck, coiling out like a snake, slashing open the angel's back and shearing off the very tips of his wings. With a cry, he tumbles to the earth, colliding painfully with the gritty sand.
    >>10354149
    >57
"RAMIEEEEL!" comes Creed's cry, leaping towards 13. He hits the slope and begins sliding evenly down the powdered sand, two extra sets of flaming limbs bursting from his torso. Engulfed in flame, he shouts wordlessly, streams of searing fire licking at 13, who dodges slowly and awkwardly.
    >>10354167
    >50
From a flanking position, Andre fires twin assault rifles, unbleeding holes punching through 13's necrotic flesh.
"Keep up the pressure!" he shouts.
    >>10354170
    >44
13 raises its remaining arm, and a towering tree of glass grows around it, constructed out of shards seemingly pulled from the air, snapping together in a heartbeat to form a perfectly clear tree, complete with crystal fruits that chime in the mostly-still air. The two sides regard one another for a moment of stillness, the fedora lying inside the tree, on the sand next to 13.

The glass tree explodes, a thousand gleaming daggers bursting outwards like leaves in an autumn flurry. You hold your hands up to guard yourself, and cry out as your wings, your chest, your legs, all slashed open by the spreading shrapnel. Ramiel, Creed, Andre, and Walker suffer similar damage, though it seems you take the worst of it. You plummet to Earth as Garfield tries to fill the gaps in your wings.
    >>10354214
    >97
You land on one knee, glaring up at 13 from under furrowed brows. Straightening an arm, you fire a stream of blood that branches into several spears, all puncturing 13's chest and sizzling brightly
    >>10354222
    >59
Back on his feet, Ramiel takes wing, bounding over the impaled 13 to reach the now-bleeding Creed, whom he carries up the slope to safer ground. Charlotte bounds down towards the wounded Andre, only a handful of scratches on her from the shrapnel explosion.
    >>10354245
    >70
Charlotte reaches Andre, and the two of them fill 13 with holes as you force your blood to barb and spike outwards, bubbling inside her skin.
    >>10354263
    >1fuckin00
You snap out with your other hand, slamming into the sand and popping the fedora into the air. With a quick turn, you wrench the embedded barbs out of 13, causing her torso to explode in a shower of sizzling chunks, the returning whip snagging the hat. You bring your fist in front of your face, baring proud teeth as the hat settles perfectly on your head, slightly askance over one eye.
    "I said...that's my FUCKING hat."

Creed's flames catch a good bit of the random pieces that had become dislodged from 13 during the chaos. Not mostly a pair of legs and one floating arm, along with a cloud of loose flesh, including an eye, she floats backwards, live tigers spewing out of her empty torso-space.
    "Wait, what?" Garfield says.
    >>10354479
    >70
13 backs directly into the bloody body of Phillip Walker, who bodily lifts the severed legs, his roars practically a gargle of blood. He tears the two legs apart like a wishbone, tossing one of the legs towards Creed's gouts of flame.
    >>10354496
    >34
Walker drops the other leg, stumbling back, his battle-growls growing hoarser and hoarser as he seems to seize up. You realize that his skeleton is overtaking the rest of his body. Soon bones begin to sprout like blooms from his mouth, his joints, his eyes. He stands at last, rigid and silent, a calcified statue that was once a brave warrior. 13's severed limbs seem unmoved.
    >>10354498
    >31
Creed attempts to burn the leg that was sent flying his way, but rather than hitting the ground it soars off like a rocket towards the top of the crater, Clara and Brody's entrenchment.
    >>10354579
    >92
Closing one eye, Clara sights carefully, sighs, and squeezes the trigger.
The bullet enters through the front of the leg and exits through the rear, a perfect straight shot down the length of the legbones. The entire makeshift projectile becomes a wafting fog-cloud of red vapor in less than half a second.
Clara beams with pride. Brody looks terrified and confused.

Why, if a sentient being had the powers of the Prime Chaos, there would hardly be a need for Azathoth at all, would there?" Arkham laughs, a throaty chuckle. He glances around at the teammates who have fallen, shaking his head.
"Alas, alas, that ye who are so young must die," he says, with mock regret, slowly twisting into a toothy grin. "A terrible pity, to be sure."

You never break eye contact with Arkham, even as you break the figment of a god upon the yoke.
You feel your veins swell with molten hate, the very forge-fires of the universe. Your wings burst forth, long and terrible, lidless eyes opening along the length of the sanguine membrane. You feel your very thoughts bubble with purpose, with direction...with power.
The runes on your skin shift no more. You can feel your flesh tighten across your bones as the runes settle in, forming a litany of scars from which your blood may spill forth at will. You open your mouth, hissing your fury at the Masked God, the Soul of the outer Gods themselves. The two of you settle onto the desert sand, your red hair whipping in the desert wind, eyes now a deep, almost-black rusty crimson.
"What....have you DONE?!" Nyarlathotep demands. "If I, with my...my mind, had but even that sliver of...you whelp! you worm! Craven whore!" he spits his filth upon you. You laugh it off with bared teeth.

"You have bought your friends some time it seems," he says, flesh slowly reforming once free of the blood. "A lifetime, of that I have no doubt. But," he holds up a finger, pointing it towards you. "Will you live forever, Helen Tanner? Will you forever conceal that bubbling froth beneath your skin? Or have your people traded a tormentor for a devourer, passed the snake's fangs by only to be crushed under the giant's heel?" he chuckles, coughing weakly.
    "Something to ponder, I think."
"Last chance," you say, spearing more blood forward.

Your comrades descend the crater slopes, assembling around you somewhat nervously. You watch them, from the eyes in your face, on your wings, peeking out through your scars.
"Where is Andre?" you say. Charlotte motions to the fallen man. You stride towards him purposefully, kneeling at his side.
"Did you do it?" he coughs, eyes unfocused.
"Not yet," you say, reaching forward with your body, your blood, and your mind.
The living flesh is surprisingly easy to mend. The body knows where it is supposed to be, and with the blood's urging, the flesh is soon whole. Andre lapses into unconsciousness. You pick him up, fairly easily, and pass him to Charlotte's eager arms, then turn to look at Phillip.
A solid statue of bone. There will be no going back for him. Walking towards the once-living monument, you place a hand on the rough, plated chest.
"Yes," you say, mostly to yourself. "We did it."

Jacob Walters watches the uproar from the window of his apartment, sipping at a cup of coffee and smiling to himself. Tomorrow he can bring his daughter home. Nyarlathotep was able to look however he wanted, I'm hoping we can do the same, or at least choose when we want to look like Helen Tanner and when we look like the Goddess of Blood.

Your lips find his in an instant, but he breaks the kiss away to examine you.
"No, wait, Helen, wait, let me get a look at you."
You cover one cheek with a hand, feeling at the crevices of your scars. Your solid eyes regard him featurelessly. You suffer a moment of internal panic; it is too much, too much to ask of any man. You close your eyes and brace for the blow, but feel his touch upon your face.
"Are you alright?" he asks, touching your chin with his hand.
You nod. You hope it's true.

You kiss again, this time lingering, well-earned kisses of celebration, of relief, of happiness. You feel your blood churn excitedly inside you, and ignore it for the moment.
There will be time later for worries. Time later to rebuild the shattered civilization left behind. Time later to explain yourself, defend yourself, make the world aware of the gift they've received, if they will only open their arms and claim it.
You wrap your arms around your love, a little lost Kansas girl and rookie secret agent. As your tongues entwine, you feel, running up your spine, the pangs of hunger, and you drive them back down, down with whatever heavy stillborn remains of chaos and evil lie entombed in your soul.

    But what?
    What chaos remains?
What star-spawned ineffable scriptures lie scrawled upon your flesh?
    What hunger seethes beneath?
What monsters, what devourers, what tyrants?
    What rough beasts,
In fitful slumber beneath your paper skin,
    Slouch inexorably towards their birth?
