You are Suzume Toranaga, known as the Fishing Sparrow! You have safely arrived at Kyuden Asahinabachi, the Castle of the Wasp, after defeating a Lion scouting party.

You currently are in a meeting with Tsuruchi and Ryosei, and are discussing the implications of the map you found on the Lion scouts. Tsuruchi is awaiting the return of some scouts he sent to confirm which mountain pass the Lion were using to send their scouts over into Wasp and Sparrow lands.

I can't recall the details, but didn't we tell the Scorpion that we would be trying to put together the alliance which we have now put together, and would get back to them after doing so? Should we be leaving to do that?

    >>10306009
They are definitely going to. They have chosen the route through Wasp and Sparrow lands to avoid the choke points that the mountain passes between Lion and Scorpion lands create. You also know from your meeting with the Scorpion Commander, Bayushi Hiroshi, that the Scorpion intend to let the Lion penetrate their lands and then attack from all sides and harass their supply lines. This would force the Lion to either fall back to their own territory or live off the minor clan lands that they would be forced to retreat to. The Wasp, Sparrow, and Fox do not have to the resources to support the Lion and would starve in the winter. Political pressure will not be fast enough to stop the Lion from attacking. Therefore they have to be stopped before they attack.

    >>10306002
You had spoke with the Scorpion Commander and he seemed sympathetic to your clan's plight. He had said that if the Minor clans involved granted permission he would consider moving their staging grounds up into the territories of those clans.

    >>10306209
Did the Scorpion actually seem sympathetic, as in we successfully made a perception roll to determine that, or are we just going by his words?

Also, would Scorpion attacks on the Lion armies in our lands have it look like we're allying with the Scorpion or open us up to harsher attacks from the Lion legally?

The Scorpion General seemed as genuine as any Scorpion. Like any Scorpion, he is as trustworthy as you are useful to him.

Legally if Scorpion come to your defense, at your request, it puts them firmly in the right and the Lion firmly in the wrong. The political leverage the Scorpion would gain against all involved would be enough to make it worth the Scorpion's time/manpower.

    >>10306367
Well, let's bring up this matter in our meeting. Our defensive strategy obviously can't depend upon external aid, but neither can we reasonably officially request Scorpion aid when we are only one of three clans involved.

Hell, I don't know that we can even speak definitively for the Sparrow.
    >> Anonymous 06/06/10(Sun)00:59 No.10306420
    >>10306367

On top of this, the Scorpion are both:

    1. Low on actual brute manpower compared to most other clans, and

    2. Intimately familiar with the effectiveness of unconventional tactics,

-so their incentives to overstay their welcome in the lands of the Minor Clans would be low.

Make their bodies into totems, cracking their ribs open to display their open chests to the world. Then slice open their stomachs, and pull out the intestines for them to see. Place on a roads that gets a lot of their traffic, keep adding bodies all over the place quickly before patrols set up.

Then when the patrols are set up to look for who is setting up all the bodies, have a few ninja come in and set a few dozen houses on fire, and as the clan leader's guards are distracted with the threat of fire, the ninjas sneak into the building and go after the clan leader. If possible, make his body into a similar totem.

Lion are big on the whole honor thing, right?

Not in the same way as Crane, but still.

Do you think that we could settle this with single combat between ourselves and the Lion commander? As Lion entry to our lands would constitute a challenge, we are the challenger and can therefore pick the conditions of the duel.

The duel, of course, would be one of stories. The Lion starts to tell a story, then we continue, then the Lion picks it up again, then us, and so forth until one of us can no longer continue the story. The last storyteller standing wins the duel for his clan. If we win, the Lion will not travel through the lands of the Fox, the Wasp or the Sparrow if they wish to fight the Scorpion. If they win, we shall not oppose their passage.

It's risky but possible. The hard part will be getting them to agree to a duel, especially since they might just ignore us since we're minor clan. It depends on their commander I guess. Additionally, if we're unlucky and they have an Ikoma with them that's into history and such, they might be adequate enough to take us on.

I think if we're going to try the duel route, we need to at least bloody the Lion. At this point, they'll likely think they have nothing to fear from us and have no reason to accept a duel. If we can blunt their advance for a time, having a meeting and getting them to challenge us to a duel might work then.

No, if you are the one to suggest a duel, you are the challenger. Also, as it stands, we're fairly smalltime. For our rank, we're impressive, but this is a Lion commander.

The problem is that our clan is in an even worse position than you might think.

Remember, the whole point of the Sparrow Clan's existence (officially) is to guard some of the richest land in all of Rokugan from those who would despoil it, land we're not allowed to farm. And land that the Lion Clan forces would be passing through. Needless to say, the Golden Plains are going to be pretty despoiled after an army goes by.

So we'd have to come out and meet the Lion in battle before they get to the Golden Plains... except that I don't think we have any terrain advantage if we do that, and without a terrain advantage their superior numbers and equipment will slaughter us.

We have to fight the Lion, but there's literally no way we can beat them militarily. Especially since they know full well that we would have to face their army before we reach the Golden Plains, and will take advantage of that fact. Our best chance by far is to change the game to something where we have a chance of winning.
    >> Anonymous 06/06/10(Sun)01:50 No.10307449
    >>10307412
Our best shot is to find some way to both safeguard the Golden Plains and funnel them into some kind of trap.

...There wouldn't happen to be some kind of mountain pass we can do this in, would there? Preferrably near a cliff, and tightly spaced (so that their numbers will count for nothing).

Also, our Wasp Allie's arrows will blot out the sun :3
    >> Anonymous 06/06/10(Sun)01:51 No.10307462
    >>10307354
So we just have to provoke him into challenging us, then.

And so what if we're likely to die? This is Rokugan, not Faerun; dying in an attempt to stop a war that will ruin our clan is far better than dying when the Lion sends men at us until we literally drop from exhaustion.
    >> Anonymous 06/06/10(Sun)01:51 No.10307463
    >>10307412
Oh I'm aware we can't beat them on our terrain but if we can beat them on Wasp lands and make it clear that the Fox, Sparrow and Wasp stand united, perhaps we can convince them with what was suggested. I had no illusion of beating them on our terrain. If it ends up in Sparrow lands, at best we end up as a political pawn for the Crane or Scorpion to make the Lion look terrible in court. Not immediately beneficial for us unfortunately.

I still think a sneak attack with maybe 12 Tsuruchi willing to give their lives might be enough to reduce the Lion command. If we get allies, we might be able to survive an actual battle if we kill whatever Akodo is leading them.

And on the map, I'm pretty sure that Kyuden Suzume is at A25, Kyuden Kitsune is at A24, and Kyuden Asahinabachi is at A13. Lion is everything with an L, Scorpion is everything with an S.

We should definitely consult with Ryosei on the arrow before we leave and mention the shrine we found. No question about that and I'm sure she wants to know what the result of our quest was.

Beyond that, I say we find the scouts. Fortifications won't matter against the Lion if they really want to siege us since they'll just outnumber us. It might be worth trying to get them into an area where it would limit their numbers as well... How many scouts were there and how far away were they sent?

Well, perhaps we could head for L18 with our forces. We do have that lovely lake to use for transport, after all.

Our goal would be to hit their supply columns fast and hard. They won't be expecting it at first, and it would cripple their army's ability to move forward. Secondary goal is to wreck any siege machinery they have with them, preventing them from taking any of our castles quickly.

Also, if at all possible, we send whatever supplies are not immediately needed by the Fox and Wasp to Otosan Uchi, with a request that they be distributed to the poor and needy in the city. Plus a secondary request that all credit for the donation be given to the Lion Clan.

I VOTE WE CRASH/MAKE IMPASSABLE THE PASSAGES THAT WE DONT WANT THE LIONS TO USE, CAUSING THEM TO TRY AND GO THROUGH ONE

    THEN THEY MASS THERE

AND WE FIRE OUR ARROW WITH SPIRIT WOLF INTO THEIR MIDDLE, BREAKING THE ARROW WHEN IT LANDS, AND RELEASING THE ANGRY WOLF INTO THEIR FORCES TO FUCK SHIT UP.

So, then perhaps sneeking to an area that would allow us to deliver the arrow into the midst of their host would be a good use of the arrow, assuming that the spirit would be safe to loose at all. Having the equivalent of a fimbulwolf unleashed into their host would likely even make a Matsu nervous as to the wisdom of their campaign.

I think using the arrow as a weapon might be misguided. It might be useful short-term but it could have potential long-term benefits if we can salvage the spirit from it's current state. If we're super lucky, it'll make the Kitsune forest a lot safer from the Lion and get the Fox's gratitude to our clan/this alliance.

Also, my vote (and probably a long shot) regarding the wolf is taming it and making it passive/willing to come out of the arrow on command.

You bring out the Ezo Wolf Arrow and tell the story of how the three of you captured the spirit.

Ryosei looks at the arrow thoughtfully, and tells you that the three of you may have accidentally recreated the way spirits were bound in the early empire. Tying a spirit into an object is inherently unstable, the object's spirit rejects the foreign spirit. If the arrow is damaged the Ezo wolf would likely break free. She recommends that extreme care is taken in handling the arrow, she is not even sure that it would be safe firing the arrow.

Tsuruchi looks at the arrow with a wicked gleam in his eye. "If this Ezo Wolf is as terrible as you say, it might make a powerful weapon if used properly."

    >>10308265
Both Tsuruchi and Ryosei are completely against this sort of maneuver. Attacking a great clan will erase any political protection they have as a minor clan.

This said, if this spirit would do some damage to the Lion host, using it as a weapon would save Sparrow and Wasp bushi, and perhaps if we were to frame its use in the right way to our Clan Champion, we could still provide a boon to the Fox even if we were to use it.

Ryosei tells you that the spirit would likely be very dangerous at its release. It was already quite angry and possibly insane from being cut off from the Realm of Animals for so long. She believes it would rampage over the countryside until it is either properly appeased or forced to return to Chikushudo. And since it appears to have forgotten that it can speak, only an exorcism will end its reign of terror.

She seems somewhat saddened at the condition of the Ezo Wolf, but understands that it could be channeled into doing some good. She just warns that if it is freed, the onus would be on you to insure that it is properly taken care of.

Leaving the Arrow in the Castle of the Wasp, you head out to find the missing scouts. Shinji has a good working knowledge of Wasp lands and is able to lead you to where Tsuruchi sent the scouts. Hikaru also agrees to come, she knows a little healing magic and if the scouts are injured she may be able to save them.

You are on the road again by noon. After a couple of hours Shinji leads you off the main road and into the backwoods. The going is rough and slow but you make good enough time to reach the pass where the scouts were sent just as the sun goes down.

Further up the path you see the light of a fire burning.

I'm still bitter that the Sparrow didn't get a Courtier class.

I MEAN, HONESTLY. WHO IN ROKUGAN IS MORE BEAUTIFULLY SITUATED TO GET A NEW COURTIER CLASS.

This. The Crane are extremely...well...vigilant about the purity of Rokugani culture. Guess how the Mantis and Unicorn make them feel? It isn't exactly "tingly".

I understand that but the ST could of easily BSed their way around that in SOME way, just from going how they tolerate it due to the bond Doji and Shinjo had. They've BSed their way until now with the Dragon/Scorpion alliance somehow still working so there's no real excuse.

Unfortunately, it's not online. You'll probably get to hear all about it as I ask for assistance with it, though.
