    Evening, intelligen/tg/uys.

I should like a thread of monster pictures - preferably not from a specific setting, just random monsters of any sort. I shall then produce fluff.
Here is one for the related pic to the left there in order to get the ball rolling.

The Lost Girls: They say there was the daughter of a woodsman who played with the fairies of the forest. She told her father about the great trees where the Dryads lived, in innocent wonder. The woodsman didn't belive in the Fair Folk, but he believed in good lumber. Into the woods he went, by the noonday sun when the Lords & Ladies were weakest (though he did not know this), and cut down the greatest old oak there. When the little girl returned by twilight, the Fair Folk were enraged by her betrayal, and cursed her; Her father had been a reaper of trees, now she would be a reaper of men. The Lost Girls look like emaciated, naked girls of about ten, their bodies twisted to resemble dogs on all fours, walking on the knuckles of their claw-fingers and claw-toes, with long tails, nose-less faces with all-white eyes, and grinning, fanged mouths. Lost Girls loathe men, and will rip them to shreds at the merest scent. Adult women they ignore. Young girls, however, they seek to bite and infect with their curse.

Spinefiend: One of the more insidious relics of Felgath the Shaper, the Spinefiend appears to be an adorable hedgehog.
By the time one realises the difference, it can be too late. Spinefiends can be identified by their unusually tame nature, and the fact that when tickled they make a sound like malevolent laughter. The precise trigger is unknown - perhaps being well fed - but Spinefiends attack by detonating in a shower of poisoned barbs. A bush will grow from the corpses of those killed by Spinefiends, and their fruit... are more Spinefiends.

Sirens: Known in magical circles as the Poor Man's Succubus, these undead constructs are further proof of Magic's attraction to imagination and abstraction. Regardless of how physically perfect the creature is before reanimation, the magic twists its face with scars, a wide maw, and fearsome yellow eyes.
Sirens are so-called for their song. While still leashed by a Necromancer, Sirens are used for entertainment with their wide vocal range and loud voices. Wild Sirens, however, use their haunting song to lure in the weak-willed and feed on their flesh.

Whickersneaks: Considered little more than a fairytale, Whickersneaks are commonly seen by adventurers and others in the wilds during Autumn. Also known as the Jester's Troupe, Whickersneaks are fast, agile, and love to play with their prey. They dance around their victim in elegant circles, attempting to lash and cut them with their long brambles. It's said a good riddle can drive them away as they begin their dance - but that a riddle too good may draw the interest of Lord Autumn himself...

    Cheers, actually.

Vulgrad the Despoiler: According to the writings of heretics, cultists, and madmen, Vulgrad is one the six Demon Princes of the Second Circle. Vulgrad is said to draw power from desolation, from fear of responsiblity, and the fear of freedom.
Further, heretical sources say he walked the world last four hundred years ago, after the fall of the Empire. As new rulers looked upon a barren country, uncertain of how to proceed, his terrible shape could be seen stalking the plains, devouring unwary travellers and destroying secure towns - the only way to be safe was to be at risk of lesser horrors, though indecision and carelessness.

They are the servitors of more powerful Demons, and rarely appear unbound in the real world. And when they are set loose, they amble blindly, tearing apart whatever they can lay hands on.

The surgeon is a common sight in the wastes. Eccentric, distrubing, and wholly alive. Their bodies are often torn apart and ewn back together, constantly changing their form as they find newer and better parts. Their sense of beauty skewed, they often begin incorporating more then just flesh into their body. How one learns to be a surgeon is unknown, though there are rumors of some teaching others, for a price. While horrific and disturbing, they are often welcomed. They are generally not any more dangerous then anyone else and often sell their trade to those who need it. However, many of them whole heartidly believe an eye for an eye.

the stitcher a minor demon from the second layer. These creatures are created from the souls of those that failed to aid the sick even though they took an oath to do so above all else.
They now are bound to forever piece together their decaying bodies with what they have at hand. When summoned they will exact their price in the form of a body part...as to who's is wholly up to the stitcher.

The Woe. While not a true being, its powers are vastly obvious. It often takes the form of crows and a crying woman at the sights of battlefields. When a traveller would get too close, they would be overcome with an intense feeling of dread and depression, afraid of the world and that place. Should they stay long enough, their emotions would drained and their body devourered by the Woe. Soon, perhaps a day, perhaps years, the Woe moves on, having cleaned the battlefield its former combatents.

Machinus, Saint of Iron. In the Old Roman Empire, mysticism was a well-worn tradition, carried with pride by private citizens and Emperors alike. It was only natural, therefore, for the Imperial Army to look toward the priests and soothsayers when the war with the barbarian hordes turned south. The first outcome of this joint venture was Machinus, a dishonored Centurion twisted into a form unlike any earthly creature. His bones, lengthened by yards, grew masses of msucle as hard as stone, and as powerful as a team of horses. His heart, swelled to enormous size, pumped black oil through his veins, beating like the boots of a thousand soldiers against the ground. Sealed inside a carapace of steel and iron, Machinus is a giant of terrifying ability, smashing through any defense with reckless ease. It is said that his immensity must be sustained by the consumption of thousands of pounds of meat daily, and that he delights in feasting upon the mounds of corpses the Imperial Army leaves in its wake.

A fae that has lost itself within the aspect of decay and regeneration. Their bodies are constantly shifting from elegant beauties to hideous monsters. Found only in Salt marshes these creatures are appeased by an offering of rotten apples and a flask of brandy. Should you not have these one of your fingers will make a nice substitute in a pinch.

Those that trespass upon their territory often find themselves unable to rid their minds of a feeling of sorrow and often will come down with a terrible cough that leaves them forever short of breath and unable to run.

Once a respected, if gluttonous, judge of the commonwealth, Baccus Bartholomew is well-known to have suffered a quite undignified end, suffocating one morning upon having a piece of bacon lodged in his throat and being unable to summon help. Reborn as a servant of the decaying god of despair, Baccus appears to the downtrodden, the failures, those who no longer possess the will to lift themselves out of the gutter. He judges them, mercifully ending their mortal lives and ushering them into service by his side as heralds of the creeping black.

Hadrisakt. A well-documented, though poorly-understood lifeform, the Hadrisakt is a resident of the unending swamps of Heldoren, preying upon large animals and sapients unlucky enough to wander into its territory. During much of the day, the Hadrisakt's long, whiplike eyestalks wave slowly in the low winds, searching for targets. When one of these unfortunate beings gets too close, the Hadrisakt strikes, thrusting up through the vegetation on its thin stalk of a body, wrapping its tendrils and splindly arms around its mark and carrying them back, to be consumed slowly underneath the soil. Though proven to be non-sapient itself, the Hadrisakt is thought to be all that remains of Heldoren's original inhabitants, a peaceful race who were driven back to this inhospitable world following the Melel Crusade, and subsequently used as test subjects for biological weapons.

A liar with many faces, he who giveth and taketh away, it is only by the efforts of The Light of Late Dawn that does not condemn humanity to hopelessness and self-destruction.

Blood-Drinker: An old friend to Lord Autumn, Lady Sacrifice struggles these days to find sustenance. Patron of sacrifices, rebirth, fire, and by some considered a lesser shard of Nobility Herself. She is known to be demanding, yet polite and circumspect, insisting always on ceremony, and will repay any worthy sacrifice in kind.

The Weeping Widow. A woman's spectre from an unknown period of antiquity. It is said that when she tried to restrain her conscripted husband from joining a war he swore on oath on the life of his beloved daughter that he would return. He was wounded and trampled to death during his first engagement and his daughter died in a feverish dream shortly thereafter.

The widow often appears at scenes of carnage, ever seeking a sign of her husband's corpse. Whether her tears and incessant wailing indicate her wish for revenge or reconciliation, none know.

[The wailing widow can be communicated with, she has unmatched knowledge of battles throughout the ages. If attacked, will behave as a banshee. Depending on which version of her motives the GM espouses giving her information about the death of her husband will either cause her to fly into a blind rage, or make her grateful enough to grant a piece of information about any battleground of unlimited target number ]

Holy men who in their prideful blindness believed to be untouchable by sin, the Empty Holies thought they could contain demons in their own flesh. They realized, too late, how very foolish they were. They now stalk the night, eternally forced to murder and eat the flesh of the dead so that their demons would not consume them completely. They are mad and relish the corruption made flesh that slithers inside them, allowing them to live but still pushing them to kill and feed more.

Alex "Jawbreaker" Howard. A conspicuous, if short-lived, serial killer whose perversions revolved around candies and confections. He worked as a party clown, but is not known to have any children among his dozen victims.

His gruesome killings invariably involved cannibalism. Police photos of the pickled, baked and candied remains of his victims were famously leaked by the NYPD coroner's office.

Despite his capture and jailcell suicide, several copy-cat killers seem to still operate using his methods.

[in truth "Jawbreaker" is a malevolent devil that possesses gluttons through their addiction to food. He takes great pleasure in debasing his victims so thoroughly that they will grovel to sell their soul for cheap, mass-produced donuts or candies. Should the PCs every find evidence of one of his demonic contracts it will invariably reference Esau's "mess of pottage." This sadism on his part means that his turnaround time between possessions is quite slow and if PC's act quickly, they can confront the devil in its natural form while not bound inside a human body]

A greater demon of lust, made immidiately obvious by its perverse appearance. While a horrible foe by its sheer bulk, easily crushing men to nothing before consuming them, it is nothing compared to its effects on the mind. Often even the most disciplined will find themselves inable to keep their most basic urges in check, soon turning into gibbering, uninhabited creatures of pure desire and instinct. Even holy and blessed warriors, pure of mind and soul, will gleefully revel in an orgy of flesh when trying to futilely resist the creature, debasing themselves to their fullest and joyfully killing and eating each other, as the fancy strikes.
Even though the demon can easily overcome almost any mind, it most strongly desires those thought to be the purest of all, the children. It will sing to them in its horrible, gurgling voices, erupting in vile fluids as it makes them dance around it and commit unspeakable acts. The demon itself won't kill any, simply consuming the corpses, but the children will either all slay each other, laughing as they do, or revel in their orgies so long that they die of exhaustion. The demon will then move on, only momentarily sated. Left unchecked, it has been known to kill villages one after the other, leaving behind only mutilated, naked bodies with gleeful expressions on their faces, as if they had died during some unholy orgy.
Thankfully, this creature is seldom seen.

An yet un-named ghost. Paranormal researchers believe she was deliberately killed by a doctor who left unsanitary medical cloths inside of her during surgery. It is also suspected that this doctor was having an inappropriate sexual relationship with the young girl and killed her in an attempt to prevent this from coming to light.

As a ghost she tends to haunt areas where there are powerful, prideful men. She will attempt to seduce them and always speaks of how she wants them "inside" her. Should the man accept she opens her chest cavity horrific fashion as if undressing and attempt to close her torso around the man's head- suffocating him.

Skinrobe was created when a necromancer attempted to convey his ultimate victory over a rival by raising him as a simple skeleton.

The rival's soul and mind were not fully displaced by the ritual and remain technically intact, though horribly fragmented. Skinrobe managed to strangle his reanimator when he let down his guard, assuming Skinrobe would now be a mindless automaton.

Skinrobe's insanity has manifested through several obsessions that revolve around his apparent denial of his now skeletal body. He is fixated on both regaining skin and becoming overweight and thus wears any human skin he can obtain in a sickening parody of an obese mortal.

Although they dwell in truly horrible environment the Shigh'omv are a a race of gentle, even pacifistic, wandering creatures. They live in large communal herds and seem to have strong instincts to help struggling travelers. They completely lack any vocal or respiratory tract and communicate psionically, mostly through empathic projection, causing those around them to feel. If threatened, they use this power to cause fear or aversion in their aggressors in an attempt to make them leave. They seem to have no instinct or desire to commit actual violence on any living being.

Their civilization is trapped in the outer-planes on the decaying husk of a dead god. The putrid flesh of the deity is quickly becoming completely uninhabitable, even to advanced psionic creatures such as the Shigh'omv. Perhaps because they are stranded themselves, they are extremely willing to help any travelers they meet and are overjoyed if those they help can return in minor help to get off the go'd body in return.

The Voice of the Deeps, is, by doctrine, a servant of Dagon, the Beast Beneath The Waves. A demon that tells foul secrets, and corrupting glimpses of the future to those that sacrifice to it. However, it is notable that the Voice, as far as has been recorded, has never attacked nor attempted to trick a supplicant. Some believe this implies the Voice is a neutral agent, and the demonic association comes solely from the requirement of fresh, sentient blood to summon it.

All who delve into arcane lore understand that words have a power, a power to explain, confine, and limit. It is by this power that Mula'kathan, the Devourer of Life, is contained. An ancient and terrible sorcerer of immense power, Mula'kathan held an entire kingdom in his sway, devouring the lives of his subjects to prolong his own. Many heroes sought to defeat him, adding their lives to his power. In time, he was outwitted by a since-forgotten wizard, who, realizing he could not prevail against Mula'kathan's nigh-eternal life force, instead worked a great magic, and bound the sorcerer inside a magic tome. In this way, Mula'kathan was removed from the world.

However, it is said that should one find this ancient text, and spill the life-blood of a child upon it while calling the sorcerer's name, he will be freed once again.

The Crimson Queen: origin unknown. Possible fire elemental? Observed amid forest fires, urban firestorms, and some war zones. Occasionally appeared to be directing movement of winds to channel the flames in one direction or another.

Her appearances follow a roughly twenty-year cycle; as the time approaches for her to materialize, the incidence of firestorms (whether natural, accidental or deliberate) greatly increases. A possibly related phenomenon: artists, poets, and other creative types may be influenced by her, possessed by a great desire to depict flames, destruction caused by flames, burning landscapes, or sometimes a flame shaped like a woman with wind-blown hair. Rarely, an artist will produce an image that depicts what we've come to call "The Crimson Queen", reigning from a hall lined with statues of herself and waited upon by phoenixes.

    The image: an artist's conception.

    the hollow pilgrim.

This monster wanders disused roads, with it's hood pulled down over it's face it looks like a person wearing a large robe.

It asks any travellers it enconters if it can travel with them, then during the night it will open itself up and wrap itself over the sleeping traveller, digesting them and leaving nothing but bones, hair and nails.

Anyone who wakes to the sight of their companion being devoured is driven mad by the sight.

It was a long time ago that the magi learned the secret of life: it could only come from life. Vital force could only be created biologically, in other words. Once created, it could be transferred, and the vital force from a dying body could be bound into that body, creating a zombie, or transferred into any other body or indeed any construct, thus creating a golem.

A young and ambitious mage, Dr. Antonio "the Bishop" Meller, sought to find a way to replicate the alchemical process by which a union of fluids can create vital force. He said that God valued human knowledge of His work, that he (Antonio) was paying homage to his God.

From his notes, it looks like he found a way to create an artificial vital force. He wasn't sure where the energy was drawn from, but he had animated a small articulated silver doll, a miniature golem. Somehow, though, he managed to ground the spark he'd created into his own body. He saw the doll tip over and lie inert, he wrote, and then wrote off the experiment as a failure.

But that spark was still there - inside him. At least, that's what we think. His writing becomes more and more agitated and shaky, less and less clear. His heart seems to have started bothering him, beating irregularly or sometimes seeming to try to move within his chest. He seems to have been obsessed with a violent rebirth into some form, but then the next line will be him pleading for Divine forgiveness and mercy. There are a few stains on the pages that are almost definitely blood - "almost", because they have a strange resonance to forensic probing that human blood shouldn't have. There's something intrinsically magical about whatever fluid made those stains.

In any case, my colleagues and I eventually went to check on Antonio. While he was known for working long hours it wasn't like him to go more than a week without visiting the faculty lounge for a sandwich. Dr. Meller's right hand, and his dagger, were rooting around in his open chest cavity as we walked in, cutting away the membranes around his heart. His lips formed the words of the Lord's Prayer, though he made no sound. A moment later, things all went to hell: his heart burst, showering us with many gallons of blood. Out of its shredded remnants, black tentacles tipped with deformed hands sprouted and grew long, waving obscenely at us. There were other changes to his body, other appendages, but the tentacles were what struck us all dumb with horror and confusion as much as this act of suicidal self-mutilation by a brilliant scientist.

This painting was copied from my memory by a mnemopath illustrator, though I wish he had extracted it whole. I will never forget the moment that huge, snakelike arm with its leathery skin reached up out of Dr. Meller's destroyed heart to seize his head and begin to squeeze. We never found out what it was doing, though; we conjured up the hottest flames that we could, and incinerated both the dying Dr. Meller and the abomination consuming him.

We found his journal on his desk, next to a little framework holding up his little golem. It looked so pathetic there, pitted and tarnished as though spattered with acid. The value of the thing, for its weight in silver, was considerable, but we left it where it was. None of us could bear to touch it.
