You are John McNpc. You are a farmer in a small village of no real importance.
It's just after dark, so you can no longer work your field, but it is still early enough to get a little relaxing in before you have to sleep. You must wake up with the sun.

    the SHOP is closed.
The STABLE is open, but you have no horse.
Light and music come from the TAVERN
The INN is open, but you live close enough to not need to stay there.

You order a GROG. After tasting it, it seems that EARL is watering down his stock again.
You look over at STEVE. He's lived in the village for about a year now. He was hired to be your town's QUEST-GIVER in hopes of boosting the economy with adventurer's gold. This works somewhat, but KOBOLD ATTACKS and DRUNKEN LOW-LEVEL ADVENTURERS have increased since.

Adventurers killed one of your cows, and, after you finish your GROG, you decide that STEVE is to blame.
And that BETTY, how dare she flaunt herself on stage like that, disgracing your village!
You tell your DOG (insert name here) to ATTACK BETTY, then run over and PUNCH STEVE. DOG, being a COW HERDER does not understand your command.
Everyone in the Tavern is stunned. They've known you your whole life, and you've never been a violent drunk. You would guess you have about 30 SECONDS before someone actually does something.

You are armed with STEVE'S LOW QUALITY SHORT SWORD, the FAMILY CROSSBOW and a shirt of LOW QUALITY CHAIN-MAIL.
You remind your men not to kill them if they can help it.
The CLERIC immediately drops her weapon and shield, submitting to your group. "I mean you no harm, I do not want to hurt the innocent, as misguided as they are. As long as no harm comes to me or my friends, we will leave peacefully."
The SORCERER panics! "I've used all my magic! I threw everything at the Kobold chief! We haven't rested long enough! This isn't fair!"
The FIGHTER bellows in rage and charges the Sheriff! "SCREW PEACE! THEY ATTACKED US!"
STEVE, seeing half of the people he was hoping to protect him surrender without a fight also panics! He charges foreword with the FIGHTER!

Let the unarmed ones get the sorcerer and cleric, and remove their items - try to be gentle about it, they did surrender after all.

The armed men, meanwhile, will fight! Keep weapons sheathed! Be ready to give your life for freedom, citizens and comrades! Once one or two of us have been killed, draw weapons and hack them into pieces.

You then PUNCH him in the DICK. It's worked up to this point!
    YOU DEFEATED STEVE!
The FIGHTER charges into the mass of your men trying to get at the SHERIFF, who he believes is the leader.
He cuts down 3 of your men before the rest can even respond!
It takes all of the GUARDS and the SHERIFF to take him down. TIMMY was stabbed in the gut, and held onto the sword to keep the FIGHTER from hurting anyone else. The rest of the GUARDS ringed around the now unarmed fighter and filled him with arrows.

Also, I just thought of something - we can't have them go out and spread the news to other adventurers or our village will be a burning wreck in seconds. Tell the cleric and sorcerer that they are to be kept in protective custody. The people of this village are not insane, we are merely driven by righteous anger - as a cleric, especially, she should understand.

Steve, meanwhile, is to be handed over to the Sheriff; we are to try him in front of the inn immediately. I say we are to hang him by the neck until he is dead, at the gate of the village. His crime is Treason - Treason against the People of the Village.
