    G'day all, sorry I'm late.

    The first two parts:
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/7073593/
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/7087298/

Your builders have finished the quarry.

    PROMOTIONS:
    51 PEASANTS -> BUILDERS.
Dan asks for 20 peasants to work under him at the quarry. Each peasant can cut 1/5 of a unit of stone per month. However with some time he can train them into quarriers. Quarrers? Quarrs? Quarry workers. who will be able to do much more. One unit of stone is worth about 10g, but transportation eats up much of the cost, so exporting would have to be to relitively nearby places. Also, unlike the Peat, which could be sold from the village, people will generally expect you to undertake the transportation, or pay for it.

Rehash of the new month thing incoming.

Hey, we survived a year and have stuff to show for it! This calls for a party with the peasants. Food, ale, dancing and music, fuck yeah. Besides, it'll be welcome to break up the cold winter.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:50 No.7102066
So are Builders now pretty much pigeon holed into just building stuff now? I mean, how affective are they at other tasks, such as working the quarry?
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:51 No.7102073
Assign 20 Builders to create leather tannery

Assign 10 Builders to create stables

Assign remaining builders to work in quarry.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/12/09(Sat)06:52 No.7102075
    >>7101996
That'll do, it's clear what is meant.

Also, I've done up an XL spreadsheet for everything, so calculating the month shuold be easier/faster.

Big Questions: What do you want your builders to work on now?

    >>7102046
Winter is ending, the worst of it has passed. Here, only midwinter is an issue.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:54 No.7102084
Definitely need some kind of warehouse or similar storage building for the leather and other goods we might procure. We keep losing leather to rain and such.

Also, we should work on getting our keep spruced up and suitable for impressing people, now that we've got our own stone supply. Set Dan Ganawb on that, rebuilding the bits that need it, making the rest look nice and tidy.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/12/09(Sat)06:54 No.7102086
    >>7102066
At quarry working they'd be barely better then peasants. They can do anything else, like a peasant, but in their discipline they are superior to a peasant.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:54 No.7102087
    >>7102073
I agree with this, except have 10 work on the tannery, and put 20 to work on the stables plus all 3 ropes.

We had multiple animals die from exposure last month, and I'd like to hopefully see a stable up and running before winter takes any more away from us.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/12/09(Sat)06:56 No.7102097
    >>7102084
Dan advises that if he leaves the quarry to unskilled workers they'll likely make a right mess of things, and have very little production stonewise.

    >>7102073
Can I get a second for this?
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:57 No.7102100
    >>7102087
Reasonable, I just thought that the stable would probably be a smaller build compared to a tannery.

Posting people again so everyone knows who the fuck is who:

    Notable People

    You are Thomas (Thom) Green

    "Advisors"
    - Leold: Your uncle's hunting buddy and friend.
    - Smyatt: Accountant, merchant and general manager of the place. Did most of the day-to-day running under your uncle.
    - Sir Peter Doobs: Hedge Knight, in service of your uncle. Your cousin, of much lower rank. Newly knighted by your uncle on his deathbed, was uncle's squire before that.
    - Erik: Your oldest (bastard) uncle. Was a scholar for most his life, after being exiled from the priesthood for insufficient devotion. Speaks many languages.
    - Zeek: Priest of Exidaid. He is proficient at healing small injuries and can handle larger ones with time.
    - Baldric: A peasant, of below average intelligence (but high for a peasant). A lackey. Possibly has a touch of the mind fever.
    - Marcus: A chef.
    - Shorty: Tallest and smartest of the yeomen. Promoted to DOOBS Squire.
    - Dan Ganawb: Mason (costs 10 silver per month)

    "Deities"
    - Byron: An easygoing god who demands little obedience and brings good luck in hunting, battle and general rough endeavors. Thom and Leold's patron deity.
    - Exidaid: A god of healing.
    - Artagus: A goddess of hunting. She has a local (unmanned) temple nearby.

    "Others"
    - Urist: A very friendly dwarfen merchant who often brings the town fine wares.
    - Sir Pinky: A pet white mouse.
    - Lord Sheff: Leader of Seakay, a bordering territory comprised of many towns. Very good relations. He's helped us a bit, and we bought him a fine 30 gold sword. His wife loves cooking, and Sheff loves good food.
    - Daughter of Lord Sheff: Beautiful, but not particularly ladylike. She rejoices in alchemy and other hobbies odd for any nobility, let alone a young lady. However she still has many suitors, mainly the richer Seakay merchants.
    - Thom's Brother: Leant us a large sum of money to commission Sheff's sword.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:57 No.7102102
    Priorities for building:

    Warehouse for storing goods.
    Smokehouse for preserving meat.
    Renovating the keep.
Sturdier dwellings for the peasants (keeps 'em happy, attracts more).

Builders > Peasants at building. These guys have some experiance under their belts, and have been taught a few things by Dan whilst constructing the quarry. Still gonna be slow, but less slow

    >>7102101
    Cheers for that.

Can we get a consensus on the building order? Remember, if they work together, they'll get that done first, there's no advantage to splitting them up (plus together is easier on the paperwork.

If they take x to build one thing, y another, to get both it's gonna be x+y either way. But by focusing on x, then y, you can get x done as early as possible, and both at the same time, for example.

The thing is that that involves sending someone with a boxful of gold coins back to Erondia. DOOOOOOOBS went last time, and was gone for months. We might as well send the full amount, if we're sending any at all.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)07:05 No.7102148
You know once we get our time in a little better order we should send a letter to Sheff about the tournament to be held here in his honor. It was bounced around in the previous thread, and it seems like it would get us far enough to woo his daughter and ask for her hand. So, what does our town look like, are we close to being representable? How would we appear to the nobles who would visit the town?

Leather stockpile first, then smokehouse, then stables, then review what needs doing.

The stables are a lower priority because the worst of winter is over now, we're probably not going to see any more die-off.

The good thing this time is that we actually have horses that they can take, so the trip can be faster.

Might I make a suggestion though, and say we hold off a month or two?
    1. It's still winter, let's let them leave during a calmer month.
    2. If we wait another month we can have MORE money to send along with DOOOBS or whoever. 20 gold to repay the debt, but 10 gold or whatever more to try to attract skilled workers (Carpenters, Architects, Agriculturalists, Stable Masters, Shipwrights, etc...), or get more helpful wares.

Your town is fairly average for a peasant village. No-one expects it to look great, it's full of peasants.

Thom's Mercy is a bit better, a small farming village, but its peasants are ex-crofters, and the buildings are of higher quality. Not fit for a noble, but nobility would be offended at all but your best rooms as things stand.

Erik advises that a small tourny could expect to get lord Sheff, a dozen knights, and possibly a few bored lower nobility from Erondia and their retainers.

Most nobles would scoff at your keep, as it's rather delapidated, and there are few good rooms. Lower nobility from nearby however would likely understand, although as a border-lord they tend to look down on you anyway.

    >>7102180
Sure, you want a stockpile, or a tannary (will have a stockpile inbuilt, but take longer. Also can tan the skins to make real leather.

As far as some kind of pretext for handing over the sword goes, I still think a hunting trip would be the best option. We're making a gesture to Lord Sheff first and foremost, more of a "My Lord, I am honoured to consider you a friend, may I present you with this humble gift as a token", rather than "Hey everyone, check out how great my estate is", because the latter option isn't likely to work very well at the moment.

Thus, invite him to a hunt, make a big day of it, end with feasting and entertainers and stuff. Sheff gets impressed by our kind hospitality, things are good.

Better equiptment and training under a sargent. DOOBS is skilled enough to do this though. Leold too , he was a low officer for the Erondian army before he buggered off and became your uncle's retainer, he'd be a bit rusty though and would be less 'focused' then DOOBS.

Seems good. How about this, we send out our brother's repayment next month along with a little extra money. We buy a couple of hounds, hire jesters, fire breathers, and dancers, then buy some spices for our chef to use. When the payment to our brother is made and everyone is back in the keep we send out the message, repair our kitchen and go out hunting. Come back to festivities and food, then present the sword.

I like this plan, so long as we call it a Spring Festival, instead of some tournament.

We don't have any room for hardly ANY knights, let alone lords and ladies. We have only shit ale. We don't have any place for their horses. The list goes on.

A local tourney would mean dozens of people coming at the very least. Where the hell would they all stay?

A celebration for the peasants would be good enough at the moment.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)07:30 No.7102262
    >>7102250
Because we are the rulers of a dilapidated keep and just generally run down estate. To throw a huge party now would be like moving into a condemned house, renovating part of it and then inviting all your snootiest friends over to check out your pad before it's done.

But to extrapolate on that, it wouldn't just reflect poorly on us, it would reflect poorly on our advisors and our smallfolk which could create sour feeling and negatively effect realm stability. Thankfully we're well liked enough as a Lord that the negative feelings wouldn't cause too much of a dent, but why force it to happen at all?
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)07:32 No.7102269
Right, no tourney, let's just stick to a small gathering to go on a hunting trip. Bring back our kills to the chef so he may create a tasty feast (Sheff is a man who loves his food), and a touch of entertainment. Present the sword, and ask him about paying a visit to his land sometime (In order to meet his daughter).

We also have the rest of winter, a ton of new peasants, a reliable source of stone and wood, bringing in over 20 gold a month, and have advisers smart enough to pull it off.

We've just finished our largest project yet and have almost completely transformed our holdings. If the "snooty" people can't recognize a locale on the rise, they aren't worth their position and will pay for it later.

They're nobles, and used to living accordingly.

The accommodations we have to offer are minimal. We've got good hunting land and a quarry, yes, but if a visiting noble has to stay in a sub-opulent room then that's what they'll remember the most, and what they'll bitch about to the other nobles the loudest. Our reputation will suffer as a result.

Leold trains the yeomen in the basics of drills and swordplay, however the training does often take the form of hunting.

    >>7102230
Yep, they;'re yeomen now. Doobs AND leold to train them? Teamwork will help. To get much better though, they're gonna need better weapons. Atm, they have spears, made from sharpened wood. That's it. No metal spearheads even.

And not just our reputations. It will negatively effect the reputation of our family because it will seem that we've been raised poorly and haven't been taught proper hospitality.

This would be bad enough if it weren't for the fact that we owe our brother 20 gold and he did us a large favour by lending us the 30 gold in the first place.

Add a smithy to the build list. And unless we've got an available source of metal ores, we're going to need to import iron as well.

You seem to be in two minds about the tourney.

Doobs and Leold are for it, they think a bit of excitement would be good. Erik and Smyatt caution that you should wait, although your lands are fine for a border-lord on the rise, your keep isn't so great, and Erondian lords are used to finer things. The other border lords are too far away for anything planned soon, but maybe start preparing now for a bigger event later, and have the smaller one now?

Baldric is so excited by the prospect of either a fair or tourny, that he goes to wash his best rags. However, in the water, they wash away.

We can have a tourney at a later date, once we're in a position whereby we can offer our guests the appropriate level of hospitality. I'd be inclined to hold onto it as something to host once we've made it and have a domain we can really be proud of.

I was thinking mostly of the ex-crofters though. They might not be highly educated but they might know a bit about their profession. I mean, peaches used to be poisonous until we domesticated them. The people who did it didn't know the words horticulture or such, but they still managed it. Same as the people who turned wolves into dogs.

They might not be intelligent or educated, but they might have surprising skills.

What/how much for the archery prize? You might get a few takers from about if you put a decent prize up. Also, there's time to import wine from Seakay, if you send a someone down with x gold to a winery, they should be able to get the wine to you just in time. Some good wine for the important people might go down well.

    >>7102536
VASTLY. They've only seen suncaps this year for the first time. They supplement their food with button mushrooms, but only gather them from the wild in small amounts, they can't cultivate them. Suncaps were bred by the dwarves for cultivation above land, but in warmer climes where the winter is less bad. Urist picked them up from the south.

A couple are growing wild around the place, but it'll take major effort to make them cultivatable en masse again. And a lot of patience.

That's 1.7g for archery comp, 1g for the Bard's Purse (half to the best bard, as decided by you, rest shared out amongst all the bards that come traditionally) and 20 barrels of Suncap and Turnip Ales. Any other costs?

What's a crop that provides a decent pay-off for the labour invested?

Turnips are reliable, but only give 0.5 food per peasant-plot each month and don't store very well.

Rice is pretty good, but only harvestable every third month (unless we get a bunch of fields in rotation - so 12 rice plots, with 4 providing a harvest each month). It stores pretty well in the granary, however.

Suncaps are the supercrop and provide 2 units of food per peasant-plot per month, but don't store very well and die over winter.

What other options do we have? Something that we can hold in the granary for a while would be good, meaning a cereal crop perhaps. Oats are pretty hardy, but require ploughable land so might not be suitable for the crofters' plots. Actually, cereals could be risky as they're only harvestable one or two times a year, and if that harvest gets trashed by rain then your SOL.

    How about potatoes?

A number of bards has come forth, and a decisoin for the best bard awaits you. There are two contenders. One plays a traditional ballad well known and loved by the peasantry, whereas the other played a Norse Saga from times long gone. Probably the one who played the traditional ballad and was better-received by the peasantry - however, talk to the other bard afterwards and pick his brains for what he knows of Norse lore. Get him to talk to Erik about it, it might assist him with his scroll-translation project.

Also, if this other bard is more technically proficient than the more popular one, we might be tempted to keep him on as court musician. What's his price?

2 Votes for norse, awesome. The young minsteral, named Aegon, is very pleased, and asks for the honour of being your court bard. (Traditionally a court bard is paid a small amount, in your case a silver a month, plus board and food on par with a favoured retainer.)

The Archery contest goes well, with no major mishaps. One of the hunters gets a lucky shot and wins the gold peice, Raslin takes the 5 silvers, and Doobs the 2 silver. Leold was thwarted early on by poor winds, and didn't qualify for the finals.

Ok, better roll, right dice, NEW ARCHERY RESULT.
Sheff himself manages to get the archery gold, with a series of lucky shots. Although there are better archers there, he wins fair and square with more then a fair helping of luck. He is greatly pleased by this. Doobs takes second position, and one of your hunters takes third. Leold narrowly misses out on the finals in a hard semi with Doobs, Yourself, Sheff and Raslin.

No. You're current heraldry is the Family White Ent on a Vert green field, however, you can redesign it, or just add something to it, as you're a Border Lord in your own right now. Your uncle had The Ent weilding a spear as his heraldry before he became lord of Teajy, afterwards he incorporated a silver coronet to the ent, and darker green saltire (cross) on the field.

On the topic, Peter Doob's heraldry incorporates the Doobs family Or-gold wyvern on a Azure blue field, with your uncle's ent in Azure white in the top right for his lord. The Doobs family is your mother's side.

Reference Found: Of Ice and Fire.

Info gained: Sheff was a dog breeder in his youth, before he looked to inherit. His father had given him a Northern Wolfhound, a monster of a dog and a very valuable one at that as his coming of age gift. His 2nd brother, mere hours older who had gotten a Shield of Dwarven Blacksteel, with the Sheff familly heraldry felt slighted and when on the hunt Paul Sheff (our sheff) got injured by a boar, abandoned him to die. The hound not only saved his life by killing the Boar, but helped him find his way back. The older brother was stripped of all rank and wealth, and exiled from Seakay, given a post as a lowly Captain in the Eastern Erondian Army. The hound, named Redfear was his constant companion from that day on.

I'd imagine that stone is one of those things that's not so hard to stockpile - it doesn't decay, and you can leave a stack of stones wherever you like. So, as long as we keep production going then we can use what we need for keep repairs/upgrades, and then sell the surplus if it looks to be economically viable.

The problem with stone is that it's heavy and bulky, and thus not really suitable for long-distance trading.

On the topic of things to do, I'm in favor of having a watch on the road. We can't make people pay taxes because it's not ours, but just reporting in on what's coming on the road. An early detection system if you would.

The "Ash" from the last swamp fire is curious, perhaps it may be more fertile, like a slash and burn farm area?

Otherwise, I think the trolls have been too quite for too long. Not one action from them over the winter? I think we might have to settle this before the year is out.

Looks like I should go read that one's archives, then. I've taken my fair share of concepts from quests I enjoy--Firstquest/Deathwish Quest as the most notable one for snagging ideas.

Heck, even when True Heroes quest made everyone realize that you could run a quest based on text instead of just pictures, and people would follow it, that ended up changing how things worked and opened up an avenue for the non-drawfags to partake in running quests.

Where to? The northern Seakay villages which have been peatching in to buy your burny-swamp-muck can't afford stone. You'll want a market for that. Also, I put the 14 people who weren't working onto quarry duty, there's no-one else there since the builders started on the Tannery. And since the quarry is done, you've had some ropes freed up to either add to quarry production or to help build the tannery. 3d5 work per rope, roll and say where you want 'em.

I'd assume we'll need a specialist architect if we're to begin repairs or expansion, and that requires money--probably more than getting the quarry made did. Setting aside stone lets him get right to work.

Also, if we build a dock on that river, shipping the stone would be a LOT cheaper. Quest Lord, is the river deep/wide enough for that sort of thing?

Which places need stone? Are you suggesting that if we build a market, someone will come and start buying it? That seems less likely than finding out about current or future construction projects and offering them a decent deal, or shipping it downriver via barge to a more populated region.

Can we get some talk, and a consesus? You're making 2.8 units of stone a month as things are, and the tannary is 90 a month, at 90/500.

    Either way, those rolls stay.

    >>7103611
Nope, that could be vaguely useful.

You manage to accidentally destroy one of Erik's scrolls. Luckily he knew it all anyway, and it was a copy, but he no longer owns the original, and thus you won't be able to use that scroll. He has to teach you by word. It's d18s now, until you progress past that scroll (total of 10, including your one on all dice). Electronic dice come in so many "shapes" and "sizes". :D

    >>7103597
The Tam is wide and deep enough for that, but you don't have any boats or rafts. None of the villagers know much of this, and more then a simple raft will be needed. Also, the river flows east, then turns south, down the Seakay border to the sea. Exports from here are the Westerlands (Inventively named West Erondia) and Seakay, along the river.

Easy enough to get permission, especially if we give him use and/or a cut of the profits. Of course, too many cuts and we won't be profiting from our quarry. The current is the concern, though. Heck, for all we know it heads into wilder lands (unlikely historically but possible).

Personally, I'd like to have a wooden tower posted with the ability to use a signal fire to be seen from the keep. I'd station two yeomen and just have them do rotating shifts with the other yeomen. Idea being that one could head for the keep and report in while the other stays and watches if needed.

Bridgeward. A barge could pas under the bridge, but real ships are a nono. The westerlands used to extend further up the river, and the bridge was orinally build so that barges could pass underneath. Every repair has kept this feature.

    >>7103632
Erik and Smyatt don't know the local market for stone, but Smyatt will look into it. Stone is expencive, so only lords and merchants can buy it, and merchants don't like trading in it, as getting it around eats up profits.

Ask around whenever you see anyone who might be a potential buyer, you never know who you might find.

What we could do is CREATE consumers. Get someone nearby building a new castle, bridge, or cathedral, and make sure that they're using us as their main supplier.

Maybe a bard talking of some prophesy regarding construction could get the ball rolling on that?

If we do this, we'd best be really secret about it... and expand the quarrying operations as much as possible. Like, have our bard talk to other bards, and those bards do the actual rumor mongering and story singing. We really don't want to get caught having made a fake prophesy for our own prophet, that will wreck out rep.

But if we can get away with it then hell yes.
