You are Paul, a man who is trapped inside his dreamscape by a powerful being seeking entertainment. He gave you one power: at random times and intervals, you have a danger sense. Thanks to an imprecise request, it usually manifests as your frightened right hand pulling some writing utensil out of your pocket and scribbling down details.

Your primary goal is to survive the dreamscape, and escape from it. You have managed the first admirably so far, evading or defeating numerous deadly creatures that have tried to kill you, from floating abominations to swift flesh-burrowing worms. In the process, you found an ally--a young woman named Alicia. You also seem to have someone or something actively trying to get you killed.

Now, you're in the middle of a library that's as big as a small city, seperated from most of the weapons you've managed to collect. Inside are books that should give you the knowledge needed to get an edge in this world, but finding them may be just as hard as finding a needle in a haystack. The library is not safe, either. There's a sadistic automaton somewhere inside whose pen you stole; you've heard the crashes and seen the heavy damage some unknown being caused, and just now one of the few books you've been able to read has offered you a fateful decision.

    Current situation in the library:

Everything inside the building is completely black and white. You've left the section with the enormously long rows of books, progressing to another area. This one doesn't seem very well laid out. It's almost like a labyrinth of books.

You're attempting to navigate your way through the twisting rows of books toward the location the index's filing card says the book "Building Your Own Spidermech: a Beginner's Guide" is at when one of the books catches your eye. Unlike most writing, you can actually read this one.

GET REAL POWER, THE QUICK AND PAINFUL WAY. You stop and look at the bright gold on black text for a moment--text that stands out even more for having color at all--and then the words change. OH I KNOW YOU CAN SEE ME PAUL. The words change again. AND I WANT YOU TO READ ME.

You pick up the book, and as you hold it up for Alicia to verify it changes again. KEEP GOING PAUL, JUST LOOK INSIDE. and ask Alicia if she sees the message on it as well. "Huh? It's a blank black book. You see something on it?"

The book rests in your hands as you continue into the labyrinth of books. You feel conflicted as what to do with it--read it, burn it, read it twice, toss it aside...

The Spidermech book is nowhere in sight, you're still looking for it's location.

You're torn between examining it closer and casting it aside. COME ON PAUL. JUST ONE QUICK PEEK. As you go deeper into the labyrinth, another loud crash echoes from behind you. The sound is louder, closer than before. Then it repeats, louder still.

Ahead of you, Alicia gives out a startled gasp, and points at a dessicated body on the ground in front of you. The corpse is clutching a book.

You take a random book off the shelf and hurl it as hard as you can down the corridor. You head down the other direction, deeper into the labyrinth, as quietly and quickly as possible. Once you lose this thing, you should be able to make your way back to the entrance safely. Or that's the plan.

The two of you duck into a narrow alcove and get as far back into it as you can. You're at least 5 feet back from the rest of the room. Echoes are still coming out of the door you entered.

You motion to Alicia to look through "Instantaneous Travel Method, 1N84X2." She opens it, and for a moment you both can see what looks like dark rippling water contained just underneath the surface of both pages.

Then the water starts gushing out of the book in a deluge, impossibly fast and forcefully. Alicia tries to close the book, but the sudden weight causes it to fall out of her hands. The level of the water rises from the floor at a rate you can't believe. You rush out of the alcove and into the main room, and--no. The doorway you came in is shut. The water has already risen to your mid-calf.

You look for where the book might be floating now. Because... books float. So why isn't this one bobbing on the surface somewhere? It must be somewhere underneath the surface of this dark and murky water. You start feeling underneath the surface, and motion for Alicia to do the same.

The only window in the room is the glass ceiling (pic was mostly related, it isn't broken though. If I could have found an exact pic, I would have used it.). The labyrinth exit was shut by a large wooden door--the surge of water must have knocked away whatever was holding it open.

"Do you know anything about the thing that's chasing us? And about the water?"
    KNOWLEDGE IS NOT FREE, PAUL.

"No, I don't know what that thing is. And the water? For all I know that book is a travel method for the water to get to here." Alicia responds quietly back, thinking you were addressing her.

Well, the portal book is expelling water with rather significant pressure--
We could look for the center of rippples/currents.
It also fell out of her hand, so it is either pressed to the floor where she had been holding it... or flew off into a corner.

However! If it had been propelled to a corner, the force of moving through water spine first should have been enough to shut the book.

So-- look for ripples near where alice had first opened the book, and outward in the spine-facing direction. (Away from her face at the time.)

YOU CANNOT PROVIDE A DESTINATION NOW. IT WAS GIVEN BY THE BOOK. 1N84X2 IS WHERE IT WILL TAKE YOU.

TO LEAVE THIS LAND? THAT WILL PROVE TO BE DIFFICULT. THE HELLGATE IS ONE POSSIBILITY.
You see a picture in your head.

"Paul, are you alright? You were clutching your eyes there, what happened?"

"Alicia, is there... anything different about me?"

The book begins disintegrating in your hands.

    "I don't think so..."

You begin treading water as the water gets higher and higher. Alicia remains next to you, proving to be a very decent swimmer. The rising water level you toward the ceiling, finally pressing you against the glass. And then there is no air left in the room, and you and Alicia are banging against the glass ceiling as your lungs begin to burn.

FILL YOUR CUP WITH POWER. I AM A WELLSPRING, LET ME PROVIDE ALL THE MIGHT YOU DESIRE AND MORE. IT WILL GET YOU AWAY FROM HERE.

Open a hole in the wall with THE POWER, just to test it out. (And let the water out.)

This one still has about 50 posts until autosage. By that point I'll probably be ready to call it a night. So, no new thread, as usual.

Lets just do the minimum required to bust through the wall for now. Also, be ready to run away as soon as e do. The beast is waiting...

No, just enough power to make an opening small enough to let the water out.
Slowly enough not to kill everyone, and leave them safely on the bottom of the room.

    >>7101998

The beast hasn't shown up yet. We can probably land safely and walk out.
Perhaps the POWER DEMON can tell us where to find a book on Runes, like the one on Alicia's back.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/09(Sat)06:52 No.7102076
Make a small hole with THE POWER to lower the water level.

Taste a little of the water to determine if it's salt or not. Spit out after tasting.

    The water is brackish.

    >>7102022
I think someone else mentioned landing safely. I'm not sure how you're thinking about landing; you're in a chamber that's filling up with water, and you're floating at the top of it.

You wanted full power? It might have nuked the place. You should remember that we are currently drowning and need to do something.

Didn't mean to let that slip, but I thought it was somewhat evident anyways. Well, someone figured that it was a demon earlier, even if several people thought it was just some spirit. You get a freebie confirmation because I was tired.

Nah, the power goes to you. It won't do the job itself, it will give you the tools to get the job done.

I can actively find means to kill you, or give you enough rope to hang yourselves with, or have appropriate results for unwise actions without just being a dick about it. So, no "lol he nukes the place." That said, I don't have any qualms about PC death (and I thought I might be able to provide when people thought the smart action was to walk out and approach the big thing pursuing you).

I think I mentioned my willingness to kill Paul before. Even if it means ending the quest, I don't mind. But people tended to be more survival-minded in earlier threads too. Best actions to avoid danger contain, in the following order:

    Common Sense--Obviously.

Cunning/Creativity--Since I do my best to anti-railroad, there's no punishing ways to accomplish something that aren't the obvious one. Something really crafty will also get a bonus to succeed, like awesome/rule of cool.

Attention to Detail--I tend to notice when small things not done would cause a problem for the overall plan. Without being a dick about it and requiring every little thing to be said--"Herp derp, you didn't say you started the car before flooring the gas pedal" for instance--I'll make sure that those things come back to bite you.)

Planning--Goes kind of in hand with Attention to Detail.

Awesome/Rule of Cool--If something is appropriately awesome in any game I run it gets a bonus.

I realize I'm probably revealing more info than I should on account of waking back up and still being tired, so I'll stop with this.

    >>7102992
Are you sure you want to find out?

You're welcome, thanks for playing. Thanks for being entertaining to GM for, /tg/. Like I said, tonight usual time I should be good to go again. It'll make up for me not being able to run next weekend.
