You are Paul, a man who is trapped inside his dreamscape by a powerful being seeking entertainment. He gave you one power: at random times and intervals, you have a danger sense. Thanks to an imprecise request, it usually manifests as your frightened right hand pulling some writing utensil out of your pocket and scribbling down details.

Your primary goal is to survive the dreamscape, and escape from it. You have managed the first admirably so far, evading or defeating numerous deadly creatures that have tried to kill you, from floating abominations to swift flesh-burrowing worms. In the process, you found an ally--a young woman named Alicia. You also seem to have someone or something actively trying to get you killed.

Now, you're driving an antique pickup loaded with supplies down the highway headed away from where you first found yourself, in a place where everything outside is colored sepia and almost everything is out to kill you. And your hand just started trembling.

Please define "shifting duties." In the meantime, you alert Alicia to the possibility of danger, and fasten your seatbelts. They're old and sturdy, and buckle with a very satisfying click.

Your truck is sitting still in the yard of the bed and breakfast you stayed at before. You were reaching for the glove box, remembering how you'd left the Thunderbird trunk unexamined and not wanting to repeat that, when your hand started quivering.

Scanning around the truck, you don't see anything. Until you look up, and notice something starkly obvious against the sepia sky. Those ranks of clouds tearing across the heavens... they aren't sepia. And they don't look like harbingers of hope.
    >> Dreamscape !!SbnXxXER/Ds 12/06/09(Sun)01:24 No.7021694
Awesome, glad to have you aboard.

In the cab are the firearms, a single knife in a kitchen sheathe, and a jug of water. Everything else is in the back, underneath the tarp.

"Shifting duties" - she is ready to shift gears while driving for us in case our left hand [shifting hand] goes wacky and we can't shift gears.

Have Alicia tear up the spare uniform and start making molotovs with the whiskey bottles.

    Check glove box.

    Light up cigarette

    Deliver witty one-liner.

I've got a pretty good hunch the majority of people will be raging if I follow this.

Alicia darts out to the back and begins grabbing up the whiskey bottles, paper pad/pencil, cigs/lighter, and uniform. While she's doing that, you pop open the glove box. Well now, there's a nice surprise. A brief glimmer of color moves down the length of the blade of a very hefty knife as you pull it out. You're not sure why those stones are there, though.

"No tape back here, I can nail it to the dashboard if you want..."

Your hand is still shaking slightly. You stick the knife in the towel with the others. Alicia gets back in, and gets to work making some of the simplest of improvised explosives as you get the antique truck onto the highway. You take a long drag on a cig as you go. Quitting smoking feels pretty overrated right now.

We should also be getting some stubble after a couple days of this.

How's the scenery looking aside from the dark ominous cloud overhead? A sepia dustbowl with a highway in it?

You head out at a respectable speed the way you'd gone before. The gas meter is all the way to the right. After few dozen miles, the scenery, which had been flat with a decent number of trees, starts slowly rising up into rocky hills. The clouds are still barreling across the sky in your direction, though a ways off for now. Your hand abruptly stops shaking.

In the sky behind you is a truly massive formation of clouds. They're... well, they look angry. Roiling and churning, with no set color. They reach across the horizon, coming from the direction of the town (well, before the area cracked and dropped, leaving a massive emptiness there).

If no other actions are desired, writing up next major object seen now.

Everything but the clouds is still sepia.

You approach the first sign seen on the highway in a long time. Alicia reads it off.

"There's going to be a fork in the road ahead. It says that to the right is New Suareekh City, and to the left is the Ancient and Illustrious Library of Mekteba. I haven't heard of either of those places..."

    Library of Mektebah.

"We'll go to the library. It is illustrious after all," you announce. At the turn, you take a left. A few miles that direction, and you see a solid black band going across the road, curving onto the ground on either side. It's probably 50 yards wide, and DARK.

On a hunch, you look up. Yep, it's in the sky above too, in a great big circle.

You'll pass over it shortly. Proceed toward the library?

You do have 3 brand-new Molotov cocktails.

You heft a rock and chuck it over the line. It clatters to the ground on the other side.

The baton hits the line and remains sitting on it. You don't think that throwing it was good for it. You don't see any light against the line.

    >> Anonymous 12/06/09(Sun)03:20 No.7023133
So. No light exists there, but objects can pass through.
stick in some metal, roll a Molotov (not throw, just roll it) through to see if it's an extremely hot, extremely cold, or electric type area.
If not, shouldn't be too much harm to walk through it.

You could put the tarp over it to cover a chunk, and there's plentiful tall grass to pull and toss on top. Note: 50 yards was a typo, it should be 50 feet.

You take a knife at from the towel and move it toward the line. It snaps out of your loose grip and floats in the air just above the edge of the black line.

    >> Anonymous 12/06/09(Sun)03:29 No.7023234

It likes metal... or sharp objects... or tools for directing kinetic force.

    No humming.

You grab the knife. There's some resistance, but you can get it back into your hand with a decent pull.

If the band continues to parallel the one in the sky, the size means there's a really good chance that your destination is inside it. Driving the truck on those rocky hills and not breaking something will prove to be quite the feat, but you're pretty confident in your driving.

Since it seems an even split, I flipped a coin.

You turn off the truck and put it into neutral, then apply elbow grease. The engine block rolls through with no seeming consequence, but as the cab rolls through you hear several small thuds and a larger one.

The knives and firearms are stuck at various angles, by sharp and flat sides, against the dashboard.

You enter the library, and the sepia surroundings suddenly switch to black and white.

The building looked large on the outside, but its size was deceptive. From the inside this building could probably house a small city. There must be millions upon millions of books here.

At the oak front desk is what initially looks like a girl, but as you get closer you see it's an automaton. It looks just like the picture, but with several thick cables running out the back. It looks up at you with disapproval before pointing toward an official-looking sign.

"If this library is like the ones where I'm from, we might be able to find just about anything here. The trouble is actually finding it. That can take dedicated teams years in some cases. Or something can just show up right away."

2-1 on the Molotovs. You empty out the duffel bag except for them, wrapped in the towel so they won't clink, the matches, and a couple of the light batons. The radio is only one half of the pair. Maybe it's useful for something, but it won't be communication.

    I'm glad you're doing this.

You can go out and get them, but bringing them through to where you are now is the issue.

I must be missing a reference.

You put a bunch of basic tools inside, and tried to emphasize ones that wouldn't be limited by size. You've got the essentials like a hammer, a few screwdrivers, pliers, allen wrench, some nails.

Main consensus is to go back in. You poke around several rooms until you find the index. It's a room larger than most mainstream hotel lobbies. There's no computers inside--all books are catalogued on a ridiculous number of notecards.

We've saved her life a fair few times and she's saved ours. She's also cooked us food, watched for danger while we slept and found us a Glock.

Could there be an alternative motive? Could it be she is trapped her and wants to help you so you can free her? Theres a million reasons why she could be helping you and since everything else is homicidal, there is no reason to expect her to be any different.

Paul has always been able to read the warnings that his hand writes on its own. Writing himself a note works sometimes, other times he just watches the moonspeak flow from his pen. Transcribing something that he sees doesn't seem to make it legible.

Also, is she surprised that Paul imagines things in sleep at all, or that he imagines things *too*? (Just like her.)

tattoos are a magical spell eh? they require the blood of the one they are painted on to work EH?

Tell alicia to try something. Remove a blood soaked bandage from her hand, temporarily, and sqeeze some blood into that tattoo on her back.

take that book with you and tell alicia to grab a book whe have no use of (information wise and it must be not big and not small) take it also with you. You can threaten the librarian you will damage it if she doesn't listen to you.

"Nothing that says "rune" in that pile, or this adjacent shelf."

    She's surprised about the latter

"Wait, you think that--that what they tattooed on my back is one of THOSE kinds of tattoos? Oh I hope not, my Dad is going to -kill- me if that's true and he finds out about it... do we have to?"
    >> Anonymous 12/06/09(Sun)08:56 No.7026137
It will be back in her hands with your hand contorted in an uncomfortable way before you even finish your sentence.

    >> Anonymous 12/06/09(Sun)08:57 No.7026145

She was not aware that other people have dreams? (Ask her.) Also-- *what* does she dream about.

As for the blood-on-tattoo experiment, best to wait until after you find the book you're looking for and are *outside* the library.

Additionally-- ask her to keep an eye open for the word rune on anything. (Or 'stave' as the icelandic term is.)

    >> Dreamscape !!SbnXxXER/Ds 12/06/09(Sun)09:06 No.7026199
You pick up a nice-looking book that isn't too big or small. It's full of cool pictures, full page and beautifully colored, if you ever get bored.

"But other people -don't-. I only know the word because of a book I read.

"I dream I'm in a great city where there are lots of people and cars. Usually I'm in or near this same hospital that I keep forgetting the name of, and there's always a young woman there asleep on a bed, surrounded by equipment."

    "Yeah, let's wait on that."

    "Rune, stave, got it."

Go for the Fire book-- knowing how to build a spidermech doesn't mean you'll have the parts for it.

But Fire... and Power. Although, it could just be a book on the strategic use of flame weapons. *shrug*

You start heading for the location on the Spidermech card.

"It was a novel. And other people seem to just sleep, then wake back up, not remembering anything during the time they were sleeping."

Seeing as how we're at 288 posts and auto-saging, but I'm still awake, do people want another thread? I'm hesitant because another thread will probably mean leaving behind most of the people who follow during the late night/early morning hours. And I'm not sure how much the morning crowd will enjoy a quest that hasn't been running on their time zone. This is also a fine place to wrap up for the weekend.

So, please let me know whether I should make a new thread, and also if you've been following all night or are a recent addition.
    >> Anonymous 12/06/09(Sun)09:25 No.7026303

I've been following from the night-- ending here for the day may be best.
But then, who needs sleep? *shrug*
    >> cei 12/06/09(Sun)09:25 No.7026305
hmm. if she dreams about a woman in a hospital bed, that COULD mean she's a real person in a coma or something, and not a construct of the dream. interesting.
    >> cei 12/06/09(Sun)09:27 No.7026317
i'd vote for ending for the night, since most followers are nightowls.

Been following this from the beginning, but it's 10:30pm here. Not that I mind, if I miss anything, I'll catchup on sup/tg/, provided it's been archived.

After seeing the responses, and a bit of thought on how much longer I really will be awake, I'm going to end it for the weekend here. I'm hoping to have the next session Friday instead of Saturday (same time as before, beginning 10pm-2am US Central), but I will be running one of those days for sure.

Sorry for being America-centric when I was discussing the time zones, it's just a bit of a shock and very much an honor to have players from other countries.

One more post to wrap things up and get us off with a bang next session.
    >> Dreamscape !!SbnXxXER/Ds 12/06/09(Sun)09:52 No.7026477
You leave the section with the enormously long rows of books, with only one false alarm ("There! Stave off Old Age the Old Fashioned Way... wait.") and progress to another area. This one doesn't seem very well laid out. It's almost like a labyrinth of books.

You're attempting to navigate your way through the twisting rows of books toward the location the card says the Spidermech book is at when one of the books catches your eye. You can actually read this one.

GET REAL POWER, THE QUICK AND PAINFUL WAY. You stop and look at the bright gold on black text for a moment, and then the words change. OH I KNOW YOU CAN SEE ME PAUL. The words change again. AND I WANT YOU TO READ ME.

    End session 4

thanks once again.. uh.. Dreamscape guy? Do you have a name, or did Ordo-writefaggotry not issue you one?

I've got a name of course. But there's a few reasons I'm not putting it out on the internet:
    • I'm not running this for attention or internet celebrity; I just want to entertain people and have fun doing it.
    • Going by a name/tripcode for the quest is already more than what I would normally do.
    • I don't have much other work on the web for people to read if they like this.
    • It's a very distinctive name, and I value my privacy.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. If you really want to ask me something outside the thread, I'll check the listed email once in a blue moon.
    >> º-º !!yxFrHrMXyX9 12/06/09(Sun)10:36 No.7026782
Fair enough, then. I guess you must have a pretty unique first name then. Either way, thanks again. Look forward to the next session!
