I'm thinking of doing imperial guard (currently i play tau)

I was wondering what the general consensus would be of 3 bare bone infantry squads joined together with combined squads with one vox castor, a commisar with a power sword and close combat weapon and three sergeants with power swords and close combat weapons.

In total it comes to 230 points for one unit that is stubborn and which has 16 power weapon attacks on the charge (pretty much all hitting on 4s) and 12 power weapon attacks normally. its a dedicated close combat unit. the vox castor will ensure that the unit can be given an order to move move move towards the nearest target or run into cover or surround a unit, and allow the unit to regroup if falling back.

alternatively a similar set up but two combined squads same sort of deal but for objective holding.

A tall, impressive looking man entered the hall, flanked by two of the Governors Praetorian Guard, his dark hair parted to the right side. His eye's were brown, his face and smile warm. Within those eyes, however, was the iron resolve of a machine gunner. His movements were smooth, belying the strength contained within his frame.

"So, at last we meet, Mr. Castor." He chuckled and grinned, his forked tongue flitting out and licking his lips. "Or should I say, Vocks Castor, Agent of the Throne."

Alright OP here, with the 230 from before with a priest with an eviscerator and a shotgun (lol might as well get the two shots in when i assault since i can't claim 2 hand weapons with the pistol with the eviscerator) it bumps it up to a total of 290, which is damn pricy for a single unit.

but god damn it could take on plenty of things in close combat easily as long as whatever its facing isn't a swarm of nids...

Also i was thinking of doing a tallarn army... so the priest is an amazing idea, now i can shout about waging a jihad on the infidels.

The fork tongued governor motioned to the hunchbacked man standing at a lectern, on which was a box filled with various wicked looking metal instruments. "You haven't met Orgath, but I'm sure you two will become very well...acquainted."

Vocks reached up, the Praetorian Guards on both sides of him tensed immediately. "Only adjusting gentlemen. No need for that in front of the Governor." He said as he showed his palms in a motion of supplication, his voice smooth as amasec. "So, do you expect me to talk?" He said, adjusting his black tie.

"Why no Agent Castor!" The Governor hissed, "I expect you to die! Screaming, preferably." He pointed to a surgical bed that had risen from the center of the room "Tie him down!"

First off, it has been established that he has dark hair, which he parts to the right. Secondly, he has brown eyes that hold an air of elegance and brutality.

From there, let's see. Only thing I would contribute thus far would be a wrist mounted vox with a built in mini-flamer.

also OP here, i now have a new idea...

alternatively i can give this squad to al'rahem and have him do his like the wind move to get the squad to shoot then run instead of a normal run... sure its just 27 lasgun shots... but.... well theres no real down side since i was only going to run them anyways, and that way i could load al'rahems squad with special weapons and have him run in beside the squad and assault as well if he can (since he also has his power weapon, his power weapon that causes instant death... )

and with lets say two missile heavy weapons groups

and with a rough rider squad...

    oh yes...

This will be my lawrence of arabia themed tallarn.

Their fluff will have them be from a generic desert world where after a while a corrupt governor decided to sieze power and rebel... in order the quell the rebellion, who did the imperium send? none other than Vocks Castor, who led the loyalist uprising in a campaign of guerrilla warfare.

He went with no struggle, and his hands were clamped down in short order. "I'm afraid I can't stay and enjoy the show. Important business, you understand, throwing off the yoke and all that."

Vocks Castor just sighed, "You know you'll never get away with it. Even if you kill me, the Guard or the Inquisition will come for you." Chuckling, the governor waved dismissively "Well, I certainly come better prepared than YOU! Orgath! You may begin, and take your time, we want to show Mr. Castor our utmost hospitality."

"Ever so kind of you, Lord Governor." Vocks said derisively as the fork tongued governor walked away, one of his Praetorian Guard following him. The other came to sit in a chair beside the surgical table, grinning. "Ize gunna injoy dis." He said, drool falling from his maw as he made a gurgling laugh.

Uh... power weapons are one-handed. Why not keep the pistols?

    >In total it comes to 230 points for one unit that is stubborn and which has 16 power weapon attacks on the charge (pretty much all hitting on 4s) and 12 power weapon attacks normally. its a dedicated close combat unit. the vox castor will ensure that the unit can be given an order to move move move towards the nearest target or run into cover or surround a unit, and allow the unit to regroup if falling back.

Dude, 16 power weapon attacks aren't enough bang for 230 pts. Good melee units like Zerks or Scorps will plow through like 2/3 the squad before you land a single hit, and S3 vs MEQs isn't good odds. Banshees have S3 power weapons but the reason they can carve up MEQs is because they have MASSED power weapons and strike first. 3 PW Sarges and a PW Commissar hidden among 31 bodies? Yeah, bolt pistols out we're going in anyways.

You come from a Tau background, so I understand somewhat but frankly 3 WS3 S3 power weapons aren't scary to anyone.

Sure its not something you want to pin your hopes on, but its a tar pit that will do its damn best to stick in combat through sheer weight in numbers. whittling down any high armor targets they're engaged with.

Once the one-wound, 45 pt Commissar is unlucky enough to fail his 5+ save (trust me, after the first turn a unit like Assault Marines or Zerks will put enough wounds on the squad to force a couple to be allocated on the power weapons) it's all over. Without stubborn they will lose combat for sure, take huge morale penalties, break, and get swept by anything with I4 or higher.

And also, man, you can't hide a unit that size in cover. Well you could try, but a single squad with 2 flamers would clear out like half of them.
    >> Vocks Castor, Agent of the Throne 12/01/09(Tue)04:24 No.6949053
He thumbed the activator on his digi-unit, activating the powerful magnetic field generator therein. Before Orgath could even gasp, the agonizer prod was pulled from his meaty grip, and landed in Vocks Castors palm. He hissed as it seared his palm, but that didn't stop him from jamming it to the hilt into the flesh-smiths throat, who made a gargling scream as the inner lining of his throat was boiled away and he fell into a hacking, wretching heap.

The guard leaped to his feet, trying to grab the lasgun that he had propped by the side of the medi-slab, but Vocks was faster. Using the remaining restraint for momentum, he brought his leg around to sweep the guard's legs from beneath him. He continued on, carried by his momentum, until he smashed face first into the surgical slab.

"Terribly sorry lad, but I'm sure you understand." He said as he removed the other cuff from his wrist. He adjusted his tie once more and picked up the heavy Kantrel model lasgun. Stopping by the governors desk to retrieve his wrist vox, he made his way to the large door at the entrance of the hall.

From behind him, he heard a rustle. Ducking instinctively, a lasbolt seared over his head, he whirled around, firing a single bolt in reply, striking the recovered guard, though bleeding from the forehead, in the throat. The last images he ever saw were of Vocks Castor, standing, framed by the Imperial Aquila embossed on the iron doors, as blood washed into his eyes, and sight left him forever.

I was just wondering how cheaply i could get power weapons into a squad and how many i could get.

I just like the thought of a massed wave of basic guardsmen.

Alright. So we now have more kit to give to Castor.

Digi-unit. I'm going to guess that it's located somewhere on his hand (ring?) or possibly in a cufflink.

Also, let's go with the essentials for Bon....um...This sort of character.

Let's see what Techpriest Q has on the table.

Smokes. While most of the package is filled with ordinary tubes, the first in the package is actually a two part explosive. The tube is a moldable shaped charge, while the filter is the detonator. Make sure you don't light this one or the tube won't be the only thing that's smoking.

Power-Shoe. Whether cutting through a bulkhead or making sure the door isn't closed on you, this power shoe should come in quite handy. Be sure not to step on the toes of any lovely ladies.

This is a combination climbing hook and rocket combined in a stylish belt. Point the buckle toward the ledge or surface that you wish to climb, and then press the tabs on both sides. The head will launch and the machine spirit within will adhere the buckle to whatever it hits. The microfilament cable within is capable of holding up to half a ton, so be sure to not have -too- many women on your back when you try to use it.

Good morning. I am a dedicated Guard player who regularly fields everything from 200 men to Armoured Company and I would like to share with you my experience.

Redundancy - Any unit, no matter how big, is useless if there's only one of it. A combined squad can be pinned, ordnanced or just deployed on the other side of the table from. Any time you go to take one of something you must take two instead.

Quantity not Quality - Guard are not specialists. The most kitted out guard will still die pretty easily. Anytime you go to take some extra equipment for a unit think about whether you could do the same by simply taking another unit instead. For somethings like meltaguns this won't apply but in close combat you can do better than power weapons by simply having another ten men stuck in.

Never expect to win CC - Your men are terrible. They will wound on 5s at best, they will strike after your opponent, they will break and flee off objectives, they will hold and keep an enemy unit locked so you cannot shoot at them in your turn. Even against Tau they will fail simply because the Tau have 4+ armour. You do not win close combat with Guard. If you're playing right, you don't have to.

You could easily do some kind of mech company without resorting to heavy tanks. A type of flying column of fast cavalry units. Essentially have everything mounted in chimeras and bring some fast vehicles(Hellhounds and variants)

I've only tried it once or twice but it was quite fun. Success rate will be only reasonable, heavy armour such as Russes can absorb significant amounts of fire while putting out the hurt.

Vocks Castor stepped into the gloomy darkness of his grimly decorated room. As part of the cover story, he was renting pilgrim accommodations, not at all like the lavish upperhive hotels and gambling houses he was used to. Slowly, silently, he unholstered his gun. The signs were obvious... Someone had been in the room! He inspected the surroundings. The dim bedroom light was switched on.

Vocks kicked open the bedroom door and advanced on the threat, pistol drawn... Only to pause and sigh loudly at the sight of a familiar figure. Sprawled on the bed was the figure of Farseer Veldrana Sul'trylips, an infamous Eldar corsair and warrior queen, in a state of semi-undress. She was holding a glass of what looked like expensive sparkling amasec in her hand. Castor shook his head and felt himself relax; ever since that business back on Scintilla Veldrana owed him a debt of gratitude.

"What took you so long, Mr. Castor? I've been very lonely and bored, waiting for you like this," Veldrana whispered.

"Surely you must have foreseen that I would be delayed by that annoying death cult, my dear," Vocks offered, shrugging.

"Indeed. Just as I have foreseen how satisfying our lovemaking will be tonight, mon'keigh." She leaned towards him, and offered him another glass. He took it, and clinked it gently with hers. "The things I do for the God-Emperor," Vocks Castor inwardly sighed.

Personally I'm a huge fan of combined squads.

3 of em, meltaguns and power swords for PUNCH (but not needed)

Stubborn 9 with rerolls is brilliant, and saved my ass one game when I fought demons and fought "Awesome, won't need to take much anti-tank!" and forgot about soul grinders.

As my Autocannons bounced harmlessly, I simply tarpitted both his soul grinders with a 30 strong commissar unit and got them stuck for the whole game.
    >> Moap 12/01/09(Tue)18:46 No.6957578
Hello, I too am a guard player. Here is my recommendation for guard users. Commisars suck.
Astropaths and Master of the fleet is good.
    Named characters are bad.\
Veterans can use three special weapons, rely on that, because lasguns cant do shit.
    Chimeras have 5 fire points.
Vendettas and Valkyries are the best vehicles in the game.
Power weapons are sub par to Plasma pistols.
Footslogging is bad 90% of the time, chimeras are godly, harder to kill than rhinos, with good guns.
    Also, never forget sly marbo.

And heavy support is for the collossus.
